SUNY GENESEO ANNOUNCES PRESIDENT’S LIST FOR SPRING 2012

As you are probably aware, amateur radio operators have a long history of assisting with communications in times of emergencies. Each year, during the fourth weekend in June, amateur radio operators all over the United States take part in a joint emergency exercise known as Field Day. As part of the drill, stations are set up in temporary locations using emergency power sources. This is to simulate conditions that might exist after a natural disaster such as an earthquake or hurricane. This year will mark TARA’s thirteenth consecutive year of operating from Frear Park in Troy. Operations start with set-up late Friday afternoon, (June 22nd). Radio operation begins 2:00PM on Saturday (June 23rd) and continues for a continuous 24 hours. Please come and check out the Troy Amateur Radio Association during the weekend of June 22nd at Frear Park!

VOICE OF DEMOCRACY SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

DO YOU LIKE YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD? Would like it to stay like it is? If so, there is something you can do. If you live in the Town of Brunswick make sure that you tell your Town government that you want slow growth that keeps neighborhood character. Do this by completing the survey on the Town’s website (www.townofbrunswick.org) look for link to Comprehensive Plan survey. The survey deadline is June 29. In addition, there is a public meeting to gather ideas from residents 7:00PM July 11th at Tamarac High School. These are part of updating the existing Comprehensive Plan. The Comprehensive Plan is supposed to be the foundation of future zoning decisions and provide standards for future amendments. The importance of participating in the update is according to State Law, “All town land use regulations must be in accordance with a comprehensive plan …” (State Town Law Section 272-a. 11). By making the Comprehensive Plan reflect what you want your neighborhood to be, you can ensure the zoning regulations protect your wishes. Future changes to zoning regulations can be measured against the Comprehensive Plan. This is important in light of the controversy about zoning over the last 5 years. Many residents were surprised shortly after the Comprehensive Plan was adopted in 2001 when a series of zoning amendments were proposed. These amendments known as Planned Development Districts were requested by real estate developers. These amendments allow development of large portions of Town and could increase the population by 30%. 2,000 residents signed a petition asking that the Comprehensive Plan be reviewed before these amendments be adopted. Instead, the Town Board adopted the developer’s amendments. Residents of the North Forty neighborhood battled a proposed PDD that would have put an industrial use in their back yards. After 4 years, the Town Board gave in to the organized efforts of the North Forty and denied this PDD.

The members of Sullivan Jones Post 7466 congratulate this year’s winners of the Voice of Democracy contest. “ Berlin High School - Kelsey O’Dell • Tamarac High School - Audrey Downey • Averill Park High School - (No Submission) Sullivan Jones VFW Post, which is located in Poestenkill, sponsors the respective schools, awarding a $500.00 scholarship to each of the students who submit the winning essay to their school. The judging is done by members of the school’s faculty. The Judging criteria is based on originality, content, and delivery. The scholarships are presented at the school award ceremonies by the VFW representative. The contest consists of a 3 to 5 minute essay recorded on an audio cassette or CD, accompanied by a typed essay. The essay is based on a patriotic theme. This year’s theme was Is There Pride in Serving in the Military. VFW Post 7466 thanks the school’s faculty and staff for their assistance with the implementation of the program. ~ Respectfully submitted by Mark Downey – Voice of Democracy Chairman

AREA RESIDENTS HONORED AT UNION COLLEGE’S PRIZE DAY CELEBRATION The following local residents were among the Union College students honored at the school’s annual Prize Day celebration: David Carabis, of Troy, was awarded the John S. Hadala (1928) Endowed Book Prize, given to a senior majoring in mechanical engineering on the basis of academic, personal and social achievement. Kara Jefts, of Troy, was awarded the William B. Jaffe (1926) Art Award, given for exceptional achievement by an art major, marked by excellence in the study of art history, independent scholarship and interest in the work of the department.

The time to discuss the future development of Brunswick is now when the policy is being made. We should not be surprised and forced to debate when multiple large PDDs have already been planned by developers. Although it appears in the past developers have had more say than residents, it is important to attend meetings and respond to surveys. “The participation of citizens in an open, responsible and flexible planning process is essential to the designing of the optimum town comprehensive plan.” (State Town Law Section 272-a.1(c). The law says citizens, not developers. Joseph Durkin, Brunswick Resident

THE CASE FOR CHOOSING NATIVE PLANTS Consider the following benefits of choosing native plants before addressing your landscape. * Native plants benefit local wildlife. The native plants and the native wildlife spent years and years evolving together, with each doing their part to ensure the other’s survival. The local wildlife needs local, native plants to survive, so choosing these plants instead of exotic plants can help ensure the survival of wildlife that helps keep the ecosystem in check. * Native plants require less work. Many exotic plants require significant work on a homeowner’s part to survive, while native plants have already adapted to the local climate and will require much less care. This is often attractive to current and future homeowners alike. * Native plants might be a better investment. A native plant has evolved over the years to survive in its given area. Local insect populations and fungal infections might be able to destroy an exotic plant, but a native plant has grown

resistant to such problems and likely has the ability to fight such infestations or infections on its own. An exotic plant might require costly pesticides

ALL-YOU-CAN-EAT BUFFET BREAKFAST

SALISBURY FAMILY BENEFIT DINNER On April 24th, 2012, Jeff and Michael Salisbury lost their home to a fire. They both were rushed to the burn unit at West Chester Burn Center for severe burns and smoke inhalation. The home was a total loss, burned right to the ground. The Salisbury family has been a staple in south Rensselaer County for years. Jeff and Michael took over the planning and running of the Salisbury Farm Market on Route 43. Hundreds of community members relied on the Salisbury family to bring them fresh produce, and the Salisbury corn on the cob was legendary. It is time for our community to step up and help Jeff and Michael rebuild their lives. Here is your chance. On Saturday, June 30th, St. Timothy’s Lutheran Church will sponsor a benefit spaghetti dinner. ALL proceeds will go directly to the Salisbury family. Dinner will be from 4 to 7 that evening. St. Timothy’s is located at the intersection of Blooming Grove Drive and Winter Street Extension in North Greenbush. Tickets at $10.00 at the door, children under 5 are free. Advance tickets are available at Carol’s Pizza, Pawling Ave. Florists, Tremont Lumber and 4-Doors Down. See you there.

STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL Rensselaer County’s Troy Senior Service Center, 19 Third Street, Troy, will hold its Annual Strawberry Festival, sponsored by WellCare Health Plan, on Tuesday, June 26th, from noon to 1:00 p.m. Lunch will consist of a cold plate of sliced lite salt ham with a deli roll, potato salad, and 3 bean salad, followed by a scrumptious strawberry shortcake. The suggested contribution for lunch is $2.50 for seniors 60 years and older. For more information or to make a reservation for lunch, please contact the Center at 270-5348.

A Strawberry Festival will be held on Saturday, June 23, from 1PM to 5PM at Sand Lake Baptist Church on Route 43 in Averill Park. Sundaes and Homemade Shortcake will be served throughout the day for a donation of $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for children under 12 years. Berries by the quart, hot dogs and soda, and face painting will also be featured. Sand Lake Ambulance will do blood pressure checks.

BARBECUE FUNDRAISER Community Gospel Church, 487 Third Ave. Ext., Rensselaer, will hold a Barbecue Fundraiser on Saturday, June 30th, from 11AM ‘til 5PM. Eat it here or take it to go. It will include 1 meat, 2 sides and dessert. We will have chicken, jerk chicken, hot dogs, hamburgers, corn on the cob, macaroni & cheese, several salads & more. The cost is $10 for adults, $3 for children 10 years and younger. The proceeds will go toward repaving our church parking lot.

The Grafton Volunteer Fire Department, along with the Grafton Ladies Auxiliary, will be holding an All-You-Can-Eat Buffet Breakfast on Saturday, June 30th, from 8AM to 11AM at the Grafton VFW - Fire Hall on South Road (County Route 85). On the menu: Belgian waffles, pancakes, French toast, eggs (made to order), sausage gravy & biscuits, bacon, sausage, homefries, toast, orange juice, coffee, and milk. Cost is $8 per adult, kids 12 and under $4, kids 5 and under FREE! We look forward to serving you!
