Local Artist Donates Painting to Historical Park STILLWATER/SCHUYLERVILLE – Local folk artist, Richard Salls, of Schuylerville, has donated the original oil painting, entitled “225”, to Saratoga National Park in Stillwater. “225” was originally unveiled in 2002 to commemorate the 225th anniversary year of the Battles of Saratoga and the 125th year of the Saratoga Monument. This work of art commemorates the surrender of British General John Burgoyne to American General Horatio Gates after the 1777 Battles of Saratoga - an event known as the Turning Point of America’s Revolutionary War. The original painting will be on display at the park’s visitor center through September. Prints of the painting are available in the Park’s gift store, which features books, glassware, souvenirs, and other quality items about the Battles of Saratoga and the Revolutionary War. Further information about the artist is available at www.saratogafolkart.com. Reception to Recognize Retiring Library Director GLENS FALLS – Crandall Public Library Board President, Sanford Searleman and the Board of Trustees of the Library cordially invite all residents and friends of the Crandall Public Library to an open reception sponsored by the Trustees on Tuesday, August 28, from 3-5pm in the Library’s Customer Service area. The event honors Christine L. McDonald on the occasion of her retirement. The Library will remain open during the reception. Ms. McDonald has served as Crandall’s Director for 33 years and retires effective August 24, 2012. Under her leadership the cooperative Crandall Public Library District between Glens Falls, Queensbury and Moreau was formed; she raised millions of dollars in grants for library facilities, services and programs; and, she spearheaded the 2008 Library expansion project which resulted in more space and additional materials for the Library, as-well-as functioning as an impetus for downtown Glens Falls’ renaissance. Additionally, the robust and artful Crandall Public Library Film and Video Festival would not exist were she not eager to share her passion for film with the community. Ms. McDonald leaves behind a legacy of dedication, integrity, and many other accomplishments. (A)

Stars for Our Troops CAPITAL REGION – Stars for our Troops is a grassroots organization that is growing fast across the USA. We take retired American Flags with embroidered 2 inch Stars, remove the Stars, put the Star in a pouch with a statement the reads: “I am part of our American flag that has flown over a home in the U.S.A. I can no longer fly. The sun and winds have caused me to become tattered and torn. Please carry me as a reminder that You are not forgotten.” The Stars are given freely to any soldier or veteran that we meet, or are mailed to them. Stars are given to Veteran Homeless Shelters so those Veterans know that we respect them and they are not forgotten. Stars are given to our Wounded Warriors as a Thank You for what they have endured. Stars are given to our Veterans in Nursing Homes and Veteran Hospitals. Volunteers are needed to help create these Stars. Families and friends need to contact us so we can share the Stars with their loved ones. Donations are gratefully accepted to help deter the costs of supplies and postage. More information can be found at www.StarsForOurTroops.org or contacting Stars4ourTroops@aol.com. (A)

SERVICE DIRECTORY The shorter, cooler days of late August and early September make it the ideal time to make permanent improvements to the condition of our lawn. In fact, turf experts agree that this is the best time of year to start a lawn from seed. If you have a new home that needs a lawn or you have bare areas that need new seed started, get right to it so the seeds will have a chance to sprout and get well established before the ground freezes. While this is the best season to tackle these projects, time is limited. Starting a lawn from seed is one of the more challenging gardening tasks, mainly because of all the pre-seeding groundwork that should be done. The first step is to do a quick pH test on the area to see if the soil is acidic. If it is, apply enough pelletized lime to bring the soil back to neutral. The folks at your local garden center can help you figure this out. If you ignore this step and start seed in acidic soil, you’ll find that the seeds will sprout nicely but the grass will struggle to survive and establish itself. Since starting a lawn from seed is so labor intensive, don’t ignore this step. The next step in starting a lawn from seed is to turn organic matter into the area to be seeded. The more organic matter that is turned in, the thicker and more drought resistant the lawn will be for years to come. Peat moss is the easiest form of organic matter to use for improving the soil before seeding. Peat moss is capable of holding 20 times its weight of water. In very sandy soil, the addition of one 4 cu. ft. bale of peat moss per every 100 sq. ft. turned in to a depth of 6” will be necessary. This sounds like a lot of peat moss (and it is) but it is well worth the effort. For a large area, you should rent a roto-tiller to blend the peat moss and lime (if needed) into the soil to a depth of 6”. Once the soil and peat are blended together, the area should be raked smooth. This is easier to accomplish with one of those extra-wide aluminum rakes. If you can’t borrow one, a metal bow rake will do but it will take longer to get the contour you’re looking for. Next you’ll need to roll the soil with a water-filled roller to compact the soil. If you can’t borrow one, rent one. Again, if you skip this step, the project won’t come out as you’d hoped. After you’ve rolled the soil, take another look at the area to see if it is nice and smooth and has the proper contour. If not, rake and roll the area until you’re satisfied. You’ll be looking at the results for many years so take the time now to get it right. Once you’re satisfied, lightly rough up the surface of the soil with your metal rake. Finally it’s time to broadcast the seed. Consult the folks at your local garden center to determine the best grass blend for your particular soil and light conditions. For late–summer seeding, avoid cheap blends that contain annual ryegrass. Broadcast the seed evenly over the area at the recommended rate. Then roll the seed with the water-filled roller to press it into good contact with the soil. If it is a large area, you’ll want to cover it with straw. A smaller area can be covered with burlap or horticultural fabric. The reason you cover the seed is to help keep the sun and wind from drying it out while it’s germinating. After all this is done, you can start watering and watering and watering. This is the trickiest and most important part of the project. No matter how high the quality of the seed used, it won’t germinate unless the area is kept moist CONSTANTLY. It can’t be allowed to dry out, even for an hour. IF THE AREA DRIES COMPLETELY, THE SEED DIES AND CAN’T RESTART. Premium blends of fescue and bluegrass will take 2 weeks just to sprout so be diligent about watering and be patient. If you use a blend that has perennial ryegrass in addition to bluegrass and fescue, be aware that the ryegrass will sprout a week or more earlier. Even after the ryegrass sprouts, continue watering as if nothing has happened to ensure the germination of the desirable fescue and bluegrass seeds. After the young grass is up, apply a slow release winter or starter type of lawn food to stimulate quick root growth. Look for a starter food with a higher middle number (phosphorus). When the grass finally grows to 4”, mow off an inch (and no more) to promote even more root growth. In spring, apply another shot of the starter lawn food to insure that the young grass develops a mature root system before summer heats up. Thanks for the read.

Goldstein Auto Group Partners With Mohawk Hudson Humane Society for “Empties For Animals Campaign Campaign Donations Up 34% at End of 2nd Quarter of 2012

Albany, NY (July 31, 2012) –Do you have a love for animals and want to support a great local cause? Join with the Goldstein Auto Group and bring your empty bottles and cans to a Goldstein dealership and support the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society. The Mohawk Hudson Humane Society’s “Empties For Animals campaign helps support the mission of the organization, including sheltering, adoption, education, advocacy and the prevention of cruelty to animals. This year’s goal is to raise $125,000, in honor of the Society’s 125th Anniversary. To reach the goal, the Goldstein Auto Group will need to collect more than 1,500,000 cans and bottles. The 2012 "Empties For Animals campaign has raised over $46,000 during the first half of this year, an increase of $12,000 or 34% over the same period last year. The 2011 campaign raised a total of more than $74,000 and collected 925,000 cans and bottles. Volunteers sorted all those bottles and cans, based on the originating distributor, which in turn generated $.08 per can or bottle instead of the regular $.05 redemption fee paid at stores. Monies from the program were used to benefit the more than 6,500 animals cared for by the Society in 2011. “We are very pleased to continue our partnership with the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society and support the 2012 “Empties For Animals campaign. We would like to thank all of our customers and the members of the community who have generously donated to such a worthy cause, said Alan Goldstein, President of Goldstein Auto Group.
