Some Telltale Signs Of Engine Troubles Engine troubles are many drivers’ worst nightmares. Whether they occur out on the road or they prevent drivers from leaving their driveways in the morning, engine troubles can quickly derail plans and cost drivers substantial amounts of money. Thankfully, engine troubles are often noticeable long before cars break down. Drivers who learn to recognize the signs that suggest engines might be in need of work can avoid being stranded on the road or at home. • Vehicle shaking: One telltale sign of engine trouble is when a vehicle shakes while it’s moving. Drivers of old cars and trucks may not expect the smoothest of rides, but cars that shake, sometimes violently, could be experiencing problems. Sometimes a car might shake if its spark plugs need replacing. That’s an easy, inexpensive fix that drivers can do on their own in a matter of minutes. A more serious cause of the vehicle shaking could be problems with its timing belt or fuel intake system. Drivers who inspect and/or replace their spark plugs but notice their vehicles are still shaking should take their cars into their mechanics immediately. • Sudden gas mileage reduction: Drivers who notice they’re not getting as much bang for their gas bucks as they used to might have engine troubles to blame. According to Pep Boys, a dropoff in gas mileage might be indicative of an issue in the compression stroke of the engine. Such an issue can typically be fixed by having the fuel system serviced, which will clean the fuel system and can help restore the vehicle’s performance and reduce emissions. • Noises: If driving has become as noisy as a rock concert, drivers should take heed that this could be indicative of engine trouble. Pep Boys notes that noises typically indicate abnormalities in the combustion flow. Such noises may include knocking, hissing and popping. Vehicles making these noises should be taken to a mechanic immediately. • Stalling: Vehicles that jerk or stall also may be experiencing engine troubles. While old spark plugs might be the culprit, stalling or jerking may indicate clogged fuel lines or fuel filters. Such issues may also be traced to issues with the vehicle’s computer system. Bring such issues to the attention of a mechanic, and reduce their frequency with regular oil changes.

Celebrate Earth Day/Mirth Day With Dr. Joel Goodman by Emily Marcason-Tolmie

The mission of The HUMOR Project has always been to focus full-time (or fool-time) on the positive power of humor and creativity… and how people can bring more humor and creativity into their lives and jobs. However, the origin of The HUMOR Project is not funny. When Dr. Joel Goodman founded The HUMOR Project in Saratoga Springs in 1977 he had no career premeditations. “The origin of our organization actually grew out of a very painful and scary time when my father faced a life-or-death surgery for an aortic aneurysm. It was during that time that our family discovered humor as a godsend to help us keep our sanity and humanity in the face of the terror and trauma,” he said. Goodman is thankful that his Dad recovered. “I was inspired to learn more about the positive power of humor, which led me to found The HUMOR Project. My goal was not to analyze humor to death, but rather to see if there are practical ways of bringing humor to life.” Goodman jokes that his Mom and Dad were always asked, “Your son does WHAT for a living?!” Goodman, the director of The HUMOR Project, is a popular speaker and seminar leader. When asked why laughter is so important Goodman laces the truth with humor. “Perhaps the most significant bottom line is your health– without it, you’re dead (literally or figuratively),” he said. He went on to explain the benefits of humor and laughter on mental health. ““Stress and burn-out have become household words in the 21st century,” he said. “Humor can be a powerful antidote to stress– in the midst of challenging times. It can help us to move from a “grim and bear it” mentality to a “grin and share it” orientation. This notion is captured well by George Burns, who said that ‘You can’t help growing older, but you can help growing old’.” Goodman continues, “If you stand rigidly in the face of stress, you are much more easily knocked off-balance. If you are flexible mentally, you are in a much better position to “roll with the punches” that life throws you.” Goodman knows humor has an impact on mental health. It is no surprise that he thinks there is a place for humor in the workplace. Since 1977, The HUMOR Project has been “taking humor seriously.” He cites five points: 1. The funny line and the bottom line intersect! Goodman said: “In a survey of 737 CEO’s, over 98 percent of them indicated they would much rather hire somebody with a good sense of humor than somebody without one. You can take your job seriously… and yourself lightly!” 2. A smile is the shortest distance between two people, according to Victor Borge: Goodman said: “Humor can be a magnet to attract people, to build positive working relationships, and to improve morale and teamwork. 3. The HAHA-AHA connection: Goodman said: “There definitely is a connection between humor and

creativity. Humor can jump-start your creativity and give you the energy to think (and laugh) outside the box!” 4. The laughing-learning link: Goodman said: “Humor can be a powerful (and delightful) way to capture and maintain attention and free up tension… which means that retention increases!” 5. Humor as a saving (and amusing) grace for the planet: Goodman said: “As our world gets proverbially smaller all the time, humor could help build important bridges between countries and cultures. As Erma Bombeck once said, ‘“When humor goes, there goes civilization!’” Goodman had been described by New Age magazine as “the first full-time humor educator in the world.” His programs on the positive power of humor and creativity have touched the lives of millions attending his presentations in Canada, Panama, Australia, Argentina, Antarctica, Japan, Taiwan, Russia, Norway, Sweden, England, Germany, South Africa, North Dakota, and many places in between. Since 1968, he has spoken at national and state conferences and in-house training programs for schools, human service organizations, corporations, non-profits, government agencies, and professional associations. Goodman has been a pioneer in focusing on practical ways for people to develop and use their sense of humor. He has been featured in 7000+ television and radio shows, newspapers, and magazines in 175+ countries, including: The TODAY Show, PBS, ABC NEWS’ prime-time special on The Mystery of Happiness (aired nationally three times), BBC, Latenight America, Donahue, CNBC’s Management Today, All Things Considered, the front page of The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times Sunday Magazine, The Washington Post, USA Today, Readers’ Digest, Successful Meetings, and numerous AP national features. What made his kids most proud was Goodman being highlighted on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Goodman has authored ten books and edited an exciting quarterly magazine, LAUGHING MATTERS, which has generated rave reviews and much laughter from thousands of people around the world. Goodman publishes the bi-monthly Laughing Matters e-zine, which has had 20,000+ subscribers from around the world. April is National Humor Month. Goodman will be featured at a free event on April 20, 2018, at the award-winning Northshire Bookstore on Broadway in Saratoga Springs starting at 7 p.m. He will be speaking about his eighth book, Laffirmations: 1,001 Ways to Add Humor to Your Life and Work, which is now in its 26th printing. In the book Goodman highlights 52 weeks of ideas to strengthen your sense of humor, including quotes, questions, and practical tips designed to make you smile. “I will share fun tips on how you can improve your H.Q. (Humor Quotient) and how you can get more smileage out of your life and work,” Goodman said. “As the book’s subtitle suggests, there are thousands

of ways of inviting smiles and laughter… in addition to joke-telling. Ultimately, humor is much broader than mere joke-telling… humor is an attitude, a perspective, a way of dealing with and embracing life’s challenges.” Goodman is aware that April 22 is Earth Day and will merge this into his presentation on April 20. “I am also looking forward to talking about my two most recent books: Humanizing Outdoor and Environmental Education and 201 Nature and Human Nature Activities. These companion books include a gazillion (give or take a quadrillion) practical, enjoyable, engaging, and fun activities to help youth and adults learn more about themselves, their values, and self-esteem,” Goodman said. “The books address the importance of prizing, preserving, and protecting Mother Nature.” The event at Northshire is free and open to the public. Goodman will be sticking around after the event to sign copies of his books saying a copy would “make great gifts for National Humor Month, Earth Day, birthdays, and mirthdays.” Goodman notes that humor is different for each person. “At The HUMOR Project, we have been promoting the positive use of humor as a tool to build people up and bring people together rather than as a weapon to tear people down and tear people apart,” he said. He gives the example of being a part of the “Laughter Has No Accent” exchange program with Russia 30 years ago. He said humor bridged together cultures. He also had the opportunity to speak in South Africa after Nelson Mandela had been released from prison. He said that experience was all about “focusing on positive humor and creativity as ways of bringing us together and building on what we have in common as human/humane/humor beings.” Goodman knows his career, which has spanned decades, can be described as serendipitous. He has given humor presentations to millions of people in all 50 states and all seven continents. Despite traveling around the world, sharing the power of humor with millions, he says some of his fondest memories are of sponsoring 20 international humor conferences in Saratoga Springs at the City Center with his wife and conference coordinator, Margie Ingram. What’s next for Goodman? “I may sign up with Elon Musk to give the first humor presentation on Mars.” To sign up for the free Laughing Matters email newsletter and for more information on The HUMOR Project, including information about the Speakers Bureau and HUMOResources (the online bookstore), visit their website: www.HumorProject.com. PLANTING Sadly, in my line of work, I get to see a lot of dead shrubs and trees that have died within a couple of years after being planted. I always like to look them over to see what went wrong. A pattern has become apparent...most were simply planted too deep. You can still see the dirt on the stem way above the crown of the plant. If the stem or trunk above ground is covered with soil or mulch, it hinders the plant’s ability to pass moisture and nutrients from the root system up through the bark to the branches and leaves above. It may take a year or three but it is usually fatal. Let me walk you through the process of planting a tree or shrub. First, dig the planting hole a little bit wider than the plant’s root ball but only as deep as the root ball or the pot that contains the roots. If you’ve dug the hole too deep, fill it in a bit. Add compost or just the original soil to build up the bottom of the planting hole to insure that the stem isn’t buried too deeply. This is also a good time to add Bio-Tone to the planting hole. Bio-Tone provides gentle organic nutrients for the tree. Perhaps more important, Bio-Tone also adds beneficial soil microbes and Oops! The hole is too deep. several strains of Mycorrizal fungi. The spot on the tree trunk where the soil is in the pot or ball needs to still be visible after planting. Next, place the tree or shrub into the hole and check again to make sure you’re at the proper planting depth. The spot where the trunk of the tree meets the soil of its ball or pot should exactly match the level of the soil around your planting hole. The easiest way to check this is to lay a stick (the handle of your shovel works) across the Adding the soil and Bio-Tone planting hole and make sure that the top of the root ball is starter food level with the ground. This seems trivial, but it can make all the difference to the plant’s health and survival. Once you’ve made sure that the crown of the plant is at the proper level, fill in the rest of the planting hole. This is the point where inexperienced gardeners make another mistake. When you dig a hole, then fill it with a root ball, there’s going to be soil left over. What to do with it? Many will This is the proper planting depth. opt to pile it up around the trunk or stem. DON’T DO IT! It will have the same negative effect as planting too deeply. Use the extra soil to build a dish-shaped dike or berm out away from the stem of the plant. The dark soil where the stem met the soil in the pot should still be just visible near the trunk of the tree. You haven’t planted too deeply as long as you can see the original soil that the tree came in. The berm will collect water and direct it down to the root system below. Finally, water heavily after planting to remove any air pockets from the soil. Miller 8

These adorable, super playful Lab/Shepherd mixes were born at this Gentleman’s farm in Georgia. A Momma dog came up to his house and days later presented him with 8 beautiful babies! She was a great Momma and he fell in love with her and decided he was going to keep Momma, get her spayed, but he needed help finding homes for all the babies! They were born February 9th, so they will be 10 weeks old on the day that they arrive at the shelter! Since they’ve been hand raised, they are very social, loving little babies!

Roseanne & Vanna

These two scruffy sisters were surrendered to a high kill shelter down South, because their owners “couldn’t keep them anymore”. They were in the same shelter and foster home as Veronica and they became friends with her, and are now heading up North with her! Roseanne and Vanna are two Terrier mixes who are around 4-5 months old and are truly sweethearts! They get along with everyone and make friends quickly, and would make a great addition to a family looking for a small to medium sized dog!

Jesse

Jesse is only 20 pounds and approximately 4 months old right now, so they say! We actually don’t know much about Jesse except that he found himself at a high kill shelter in Alabama and he’s a good old All American Mixed Breed! By looking at him, we think that he has a very kissable face, a beautiful coat, and a sweet personality!

We run many adoption events each week and we need volunteers to help set up and take down. We need lots of administrative help as well, including developing new fundraising events, making follow-up calls to new pet parents after our felines are adopted, grant writing, maintaining our website (WordPress), and media relations. If you can spare just a few hours a month you can make a huge difference in the lives of homeless felines. Please call Judie Janco at 518-573-9906 for more information on how you can get involved.

The Importance Of Being Seen On The Road

(MS) — As they spend more and more time in their vehicles, drivers tend to grow more comfortable behind the wheel. As a result, drivers may be inclined to take certain things, including how visible they are to approaching motorists, for granted.

When drivers think of their vehicle lights, they tend to be most concerned with how those lights impact how they can see the road ahead of them at night. Clearly lit roadways vastly improve driver safety, and the right headlights can go a long way toward illuminating even the darkest of roads. But drivers also must take the necessary steps to ensure they’re easily seen by fellow motorists. • Routinely inspect all vehicle lights. Headlights can make vehicles more visible to oncoming traffic, but it’s important that drivers routinely inspect brake lights, taillights and signal lights as well. Such inspections can ensure that vehicles behind and alongside drivers’ own cars and trucks can see them as they brake or attempt to change lanes. • Upgrade to LED lights. Even lights that are working properly can be a serious safety hazard. That’s because the standard incandescent lights found in many vehicles do a poor job of effectively illuminating vehicles when drivers apply the brakes or put their turn signals on. Lights that fail to immediately alert fellow

motorists that drivers have applied the brakes or are making a turn can contribute to accidents, especially when vehicles are moving at high speeds. The new LED lighting technology, which is used in Philips Ultinon LEDs, makes the lights much brighter and more visible than standard incandescent lights, delivering more dynamic lighting for both exterior and interior vehicle applications. Designed as direct replacements for brake and taillights, signal lamps, back up lights, running lights and side markers, Ultinon LEDs turn on instantly and can reduce braking distance by up to 20 feet at speeds as high as 75 miles per hour. That superior, more immediate light output ensures vehicles are seen more quickly when drivers are turning or applying the brakes. And because their advanced design makes them highly resistant to extreme heat, vibration and other potentially harmful environmental conditions, Ultinon LEDs can provide drivers with the peace of mind that their lights will last longer than standard incandescent lights without exhibiting diminished performance. Lumileds, the exclusive supplier of Philips automotive light products, offers a full range of Ultinon LEDs and has also developed a convenient online Bulb Look Up that helps drivers identify the right LED for their par-

A 2016 analysis of data from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System found that more than 40 percent of all motor vehicle crash deaths in the United States in 2014 occurred between the hours of 6 p.m. and 3 a.m. It’s no coincidence that automotive fatalities spike during nighttime hours, when drivers’ vision is naturally diminished and darkened roadways make it harder to see fellow motorists. When driving during twilight hours and after the sun goes down, drivers can make a concerted effort to drive defensively. Make sure brakes are applied early enough so other drivers have ample time to react, and flip turn signals on long before making turns. In addition, leave more room between your own vehicle and those of fellow motorists, which can protect you and your passengers from drivers whose vehicles are still employing outdated lights. When driving at night, drivers must remember that seeing and being seen makes for much safer roads. More information about vehicle lighting technology is available at www.philipsautolighting.com.

Tips For A Successful Driving Vacation Driving vacations can be budget-friendly ways to get away from home for a few days. Such excursions can be customized according to families’ particular schedules and interests. To make the most of driving vacations, travelers can employ these tips. • Map the destination. Figure out the duration of the trip ahead of time, jotting down approximate times of travel. This will help you break up the ride so you can include stops for food, bathroom breaks and fill-ups. • Plan food and accommodations. Some people like to plan road trips as they go. Those who prefer to have greater control can decide where to stop in advance, researching hotels, attractions and dining establishments. • Be firm with departure times. Make a plan to leave at a particular hour and stick to it. This will help to keep the trip on schedule. • Share the driving. Know your driving limits and share driving duties with someone else who can take over if or when fatigue sets in. • Pack stuff for kids to do. Prevent or delay the “are we there yets” with movies, puzzles, books, and music for children. Pack headphones so their devices will not disturb others. • Schedule a tuneup beforehand. Before departing, ensure your vehicle is in good working order to reduce the likelihood of a breakdown. Make sure you have a spare tire and tirechanging tools, just in case. • Don’t pack too much. Leave some room in the vehicle for souvenirs picked up along the way. Take advantage of hotel laundry facilities to keep clothes fresh and to avoid having to pack too many outfits. • Adjust as you go. Even the best plans need to be modified on occasion. Keep an open mind and be flexible so you can enjoy any unexpected wonders that may pop up. Flexibility also can help you adapt to traffic or detours.
