f—when you think of Elora and Fergus— you think of the dramatic beauty of the Elora Gorge, world class festivals, a haven of arts and culture, all with a heritage river running through it, well, you’d be right. You’d also be right thinking of summer music festivals on the banks of the Grand, an outdoor adventurer’s dream, and home to arguably the prettiest farmers’ market in Ontario. Elora and Fergus are places where the past proudly meets the present; where our cultural diversity underlies how we honour past glories and create modern traditions. Start with our parades—from the gathering of the ghouls during a hauntingly happening Hallowe’en month, to the historic Canada Day parade, to the majestic Elora Horse and Hound parade (pictured above), with all its pomp and ceremony. From art to adventure, music to monsters, thoroughbreds to bread baking, fine food to fly-fishing, come experience Elora and Fergus for yourself. It really is what you imagine, and so much more!

ELORA AND FERGUS: A CLASSIC COUPLE Music—from the classics to classic rock—is prominent everywhere. You can hear both international and great homegrown talents at local venues and pubs, and enjoy almost three weeks of outstanding musical programming in July, at the Elora Festival. There are country, Celtic and straightahead rock performances throughout the summer as well. Elora’s Riverfest is an annual celebration of music and community where you can enjoy an energizing songfilled summer day on the banks of the Grand River. Both the Fergus Truck Show and the Fergus Scottish Festival and Highland Games—the largest events of their kind in North America—feature an impressive musical component, and traditional competitions that draw entries and spectators from far and wide. The artistic community flourishes here, and is on display year-round at the widely respected Elora Centre for the Arts. There are other creative experiences too—from “OneHot-Date” glass blowing classes to hot 3

WHERE PAST MEETS PRESENT metal and mayhem blacksmith workshops, fine art to fly-tying classes, historical and culinary walking tours—all designed to invite visitor participation and expression. Throughout it all, our Bed & Breakfast hosts and innkeepers will pamper you on your overnight stays in quality accommodations that are as diverse and interesting as the homes and hosts themselves. From rural retreats to in-town estates, a B&B stay is a great way to relax and indulge. And because you will undoubtedly get hungry again following breakfast, there’s a wide variety of dining experiences that will suit every palate and taste. Some of Canada’s most celebrated chefs call Elora home, including culinary crusader Anita Stewart, Master Chef Roger Dufau and World Cookbook Award-winning author, Resa Lent.

HERITAGE TOWNS AND TRAILS Our spirit of place is strong, and the telling of it can be found in the Wellington County Museum and Archives. Standing like a hilltop sentinel between Elora and Fergus, it is the jewel of our heritage crown. It is also a welcome rest stop on the Elora Cataract Trailway: a 47-kilometre rail trail linking

find your perfect place picturesque communities along its route, and a wonderful way to explore the region. See the Gorge in two downtowns, at Elora’s Victoria Park and Templin Gardens in Fergus. The trails and natural waterways running through both towns are valued treasures, allowing visitors and residents to tube, zipline, kayak and swim whenever their inner adventurer lets loose! And for those who prefer solid ground, our many unique boutiques offer a delightful shopping experience. There’s a cultural vibe that radiates through Elora and Fergus; a creative energy that draws artists, musicians and art lovers together to build an enclave of talent with an appreciative audience. Some of the most important artists in our nation have been inspired by our landscape. A.J. Casson fell in love with and painted our scenic views. Today, Elora Acoustic Café and Art in the Open bring live music and outdoor art to Elora while independent theatre companies grace the stage of the historic Fergus Grand Theatre. The Elora Fergus Studio Tour, a successful behind-the-scenes tour of the intimate studios of participating artists, has emerged as a southern Ontario must-see event spanning two weekends in the fall.

artin deGroot and Ineke Booy are living the dream. Working in harmony with nature to create a certified organic dairy farm, these farmers are creating products they feel good about. So they should, as anyone who has tasted their Mapleton’s Organic Ice Cream and Yogurts knows. Martin deGroot and daughter Arwa: Mapleton’s Organic is a national, homegrown treasure. More than just ice cream, it’s about connecting people with the farm.

Although you can find Mapleton’s Organic ice cream flavours all across Canada, and their yogurts throughout Ontario, for a real farm experience, they invite you to come out and visit. Located just a short drive from Elora in the township of Mapleton, the family farm is where the magic happens. It has become a fun destination for thousands of visitors who travel from near and far to get a taste of real farm life. Making the connection between the farm and the consumer is a priority for Martin, Ineke and daughter Arwa. They’ve designed a fresh storefront, with café serving organic lunches, and family-friendly activities to get people back to the farm to see where and how their food is grown. Visitors can also learn about animal welfare, and the environmental standards that make Mapleton’s products truly unique. Visitors can tour the farm, enjoy wagon rides, explore the labyrinth, meet the animals and sample Mapleton’s fabulous flavours—such as Chai or Dandelion organic ice cream, or the creamy Vanilla yogurt. Organic meats and other treats can also be purchased, all with the confidence that these products were raised and produced on site, by the people who greet you when you get there. Open 7 days a week, 11 am to 6 pm Victoria Day to Thanksgiving. Special events are held throughout the season— visit the Mapletons Organic Dairy Facebook page or website for regular updates. 8548 Wellington Rd 7, Moorefield, ON N0G 2K0 519.638.1115

hey are living their dream. In 2009, REALTOR® Kristi, and IT consultant Robert, bought a 10-acre farm just south of Belwood to raise alpacas. They started with four. Now they have 13, each with a distinctive name, like Grande Latte, or Silver Lining. They hope to have another four babies to name this year. And they’re loving it. Yarn colours are generally the natural colour of the animal, complete with a photo. Uhh, Mr. DeMille? I’m ready for my closeup.

That’s because alpacas are gentle, inquisitive animals, along with being low-maintenance and gentle on the land. But one of the big reasons they went into raising alpacas is because the fibre they produce is the warmest and softest around, superior to wool. It’s stronger and more resilient. It’s also hypo-allergenic, contains no lanolin, and comes in 22 natural colours that range from pure white to pure black. That makes it perfect for a variety of products, from yarn to socks and fine clothing, as well as duvets and other felted goods. On the farm is a large store where you can check out all the great alpaca products along with delicious, fresh free-range eggs and free-run chicken raised right on the farm. Kristi and Robert are adamant about supporting local farming and local entrepreneurs, and have as much of their fibre processed locally as possible. They also carry a variety o f locally produced food and gifts such as soap, candles, honey, coffee, chips and more. A fun day for everyone! Shearing Open House on Sunday, May 11 (Mother’s Day). Farmers’ Markets in Guelph & Elora every Saturday year-round. Farm Visits are welcome, please call or email for appointment. For Events & Newsletter visit 6185 Sixth Line, Belwood, ON 519.841.5055

edge—literally, as it turns out—has created adventures that challenge participants to push through their fears. Launched in 2001, the ONE AXE name speaks to Frederick’s character: on his first mountaineering adventure, he commented to his instructor that the icy slope wasn’t much of a challenge. The instructor took away one of his axes. Unknowingly, he created ONE AXE Fred. Partner Christa Niravong handles the business end of the fun, while Fred instructs and leads the professionals who teach the thrill-seekers. And there are lots of opportunities. The Amazing Elora Race is a popular team-building program where corporate teams work together to find clues around town, with the zipline as an add-on. You can learn to rappel off the cliffs like a human spider, or participate in a full-day ziplining adventure by registering in advance. And now, SkyRider gives everyone a chance to zipline across the Gorge without pre-booking. Thrills on demand.

through tranquil vistas you can discover on your own self-guided tour. Of all the trails, The Butter Tart Trail is perhaps the most popular, which is hardly surprising. Who doesn’t like a rich, decadent butter tart? And on the sweetest road trip since 2006, you can find at least a dozen varieties, along with some more unusual tart creations: doggy butter tart treats, pottery trays in homage to the butter tart, butter tart sundaes, milkshakes, pies and ice cream, even butter tart-inspired soaps and scents. Wellington North is all about experiences, which are all around. This is the heartland of local food, evidenced by the Wellington North Farmers’ Market in Mount Forest. Here’s where you’ll find farm-fresh foods offered by the people who grow them. Also in Mount Forest the third weekend of July brings the three-day Fireworks Festival, designated a Top 100 Festival in Ontario for the past seven consecutive years. On September 27, discover the wealth of heritage and cultural attractions showcased through Doors Open Ontario, this year commemorating the centennial of the First World War. The Village of Arthur—a Doors Open site all its own—is designated “Canada’s Most Patriotic Village”. Proudly displayed on its buildings are detailed murals paying homage to the designation, carefully rendered by local artists. There’s much to see and do in Wellington North, a place where premiere fashion destinations, traditional fall fairs, Christmas parades and home cooking are as much a part of the experience as the birdsong and flowers that surround you. How sweet it that!

his majestic limestone building has been home to many. Built in 1877 to house the poor, it began as a self-sufficient industrial farm, worked and tended by the very people it sheltered. For 70 years, the Wellington County History comes to life with events and exhibits throughout the year.

House of Industry and Refuge provided a home to people who had none. Later it became a longterm care facility. Today it is a magnificent Museum, and features an award-winning exhibit telling the stories of the people who lived, worked and died here. Aptly named “If These Walls Could Speak”, it recounts the stories of the people whose home it was. Recently the museum has added storyboards in the adjacent poorhouse cemetery about its history and the people buried there. A monument in the centre lists all who were interred. In the restored timber-frame barn, an agricultural exhibit showcases how the barn was used during the years while the museum was home to the poor. Other permanent exhibits include a look at a soldier’s life at the Front during World War I, and a 500-year-old village from the County. The Wellington County Museum and Archives offers an ever-popular, year-round program of events too. Festivities such as Family Day, Harvest Home and the Antique & Classic Car Show vie for attendance with Art Workshops for adults, lectures and school programs. With its peaceful gardens, this impressive hilltop site is the perfect setting for a picnic, a stroll along a path or a relaxing sit by the pond. Weekdays 9:30 am to 4:30 pm. Weekends 1 pm to 5 pm. he Village of Elora has been love at first sight for many, including Group of Seven artist A.J. Casson, who described it as “Ontario’s Most Beautiful Village.” Year after year, thousands travel from around the world to admire its stunning beauty. Many have chosen to stay and make it home. Elora is a vibrant, thriving community and year-round destination, scenically perched on the banks of the Grand River, where its waters tumble into the renowned Elora Gorge. The natural stone made ready building material for Scottish settlers in the mid-1830s. Today, these buildings welcome you as fascinating shops, tantalizing restaurants, inspiring artists’ studios, stunning accommodations, galleries and more! Elora offers a National Historic Site—the Wellington County Museum—as well as an annual “must attend” antique show, and a variety of festivals showcasing diversity in art, music and theatre. Explore the gems of our timeless village by taking a guided historical or culinary walking tour. Hike, go tubing or zipline across the Grand River for a once-in-a-lifetime experience! Whether you live nearby or plan for just a weekend, come and enjoy Ontario’s Most Beautiful Village firsthand this summer.

elora farmers’ market

elcome to the “prettiest farmers’ market in Ontario”, surrounded by some of the best farmland, growers and producers in the province. The Elora Farmers’ Market is a vibrant outdoor market throughout the summer season, as well as a cozy indoor market experience all winter long.

Fresh country air and produce in Bissell Park, on the banks of the Grand River.

On Saturday summer mornings, Bissell Park is the place to be: an idyllic riverside setting lined with trees, a board walk, places to fish and plenty of room to play, right in the heart of the village. A visual and aromatic feast lures you to tables loaded with the region's freshest, inseason fruits and vegetables, honey, ciders, cheeses, pasture-raised meats and poultry, jams, preserves, cut flowers and nursery stock. Local food artisans bring fresh bread, prepared foods and other goodies. The warmth and energy of the market vendors in combination with the peaceful setting adds to the pleasure of finding the best in local fare. This is an authentic farmers’ market experience, where you greet old friends and make new ones. Come and meet the people who grow your food.

Food demonstrations, guest artists and entertainment. Saturdays 9 am to 1 pm, May 10 to Oct 25, rain or shine. Bissell Park, East Mill St., Elora. Winter market at the Paddocks at Grand River Raceway, late Oct through March. Plenty of free parking. 519.846.0556

Owners Katherine and Jim focus their efforts on making the Brew House a welcoming destination that’s all about friends and family. This summer promises to be the best yet, with live entertainment twice a week. There’s Contemporary Thursdays featuring folk and popular music, and Celtic Saturdays, both with an 8 pm start. i love chocolate!

he name says it all. For 20 successful years, chocolatiers Gerry and Krista Byers and their team have been handcrafting decadent delights in Belgian chocolate. Their shop is stuffed with chocolate truffles–plus more than 12 flavours of fresh fudge, peanut brittle, almond buttercrunch, homemade Chocolatiers Krista and Gerry Byers: Spreading the love.

marshmallow dipped in Belgian chocolate, mint smoothies, almond and cranberry bark, gourmet flavoured swirl barks, chocolate covered pretzels... whew! You get the picture. And they’re all lovingly created on site. What started out as a small retail operation born from a desire to work together, has become a year-round destination that many travel from afar to visit. “We often hear our customers say it’s the best chocolate they’ve ever tasted,” Krista says with pride. Their success is due in part to the high-quality imported Belgian chocolate they start with, and to their pure creativity in finding new ways of looking at chocolate. But the biggest factor is the love that goes into the detail that makes every chocolate a first-time, delectable experience. Krista and Gerry have established instore programs that support families in Haiti. They’ve taught a family in Port au Prince how to sew, providing them with a skill for a sustainable income. And their sister store, I Love That Gift! showcasing gifts and home décor, features the aprons this Haitian family has made. No wonder that “love” figures so prominently in everything they do. Open year round, Mon to Sat, 10 am to 6 pm. Open late Thurs & Fri until 8 pm, April to December. Extended hours during Holiday times.
