2012-13 summer season starts Friday! The first international ship arrives in Australia this week, launching Australia’s biggest record-breaking wave season. ROYAL Caribbean’s Radiance of the Seas is due to dock at Sydney’s Overseas Passenger Terminal at 6am on Friday 12 October, marking the beginning of an exciting “wave season” in Australia. The six-month schedule includes many new ships – the largest, the newest and the most luxurious ever – calling Australia home. Royal Caribbean Cruises will carry more than 200,000 passengers on four vessels, including the two biggest cruise ships ever based in Australia –Voyager of the Seas and Celebrity Solstice – plus a brief visit by Celebrity Millennium. RCCL’s Australia and New Zealand Commercial Director, Adam Armstrong, said Voyager and Solstice would “revolutionise the cruising landscape as we introduce a size and calibre of superliners previously only experienced overseas”. Carnival Australia will have 19 ships carrying

The e-tickets, issued to guests, will now feature detailed information on check-in times and the departure terminal for each cruise, as well as information on the dress codes for individual voyages, how many ‘Formal Nights’ they can expect, and which specific ‘Themed Nights’ will be taking place, whether ‘International’, ‘Nautical’ or ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll’.

A record 14 of those ships will be based in Australian waters for all or some of the 201213 season, with a further five ships visiting as part of their world voyages. Highlights include the local debut of Carnival Spirit, maiden calls by Holland America’s Oosterdam and Seabourn Quest, and the return of Queen Mary 2 for its inaugural circumnavigation of New Zealand. Carnival Australia CEO Ann Sherry said passenger numbers were expected to increase by 5% on last year. “We’ll be visiting more Australian ports than ever before, with 27 different towns and cities set to welcome our ships over the coming months,” she said.

FOUR Celebrity Cruises employees who have each been touched by breast cancer are set to become the Godmothers of Celebrity Reflection: Jovanka Goronjic, Megan Mathie, Helen O'Connell and Rosey Rodriguez. Both Goronjic and Mathie work onboard the cruise line’s ships, in the AquaSpa and Hot Glass Show respectively, with Goronjic having helped her mother through breast cancer and Mathie currently supporting her sister and mother through the illness. Meanwhile O'Connell manages Community Relations for Celebrity and came through breast cancer in 2009, whilst Rodriguez is manager of the company's Special Events team and on 08 June of this year, was diagnosed with stage-3 breast cancer. “The breast cancer cause is one we've adopted across the Celebrity brand, and one with deep meaning for each of these women and their four predecessors,” said Richard Fain, Chairman of Celebrity Cruises. “These ladies are not only inspiring in their professional lives, but in their personal lives, as well, with each of them devoted to their own and our company's interest in doing all we can to find a cure for breast cancer,” he added. Celebrity has been linked with the breast cancer cause since 2008 when it held an event onboard Celebrity Solstice to raise funds for breast cancer screenings for low-income women, and is now an official corporate partner of The Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF).

SeaDream coming soon to Australasia Luxury mega-yacht SeaDream II will spend six months in Asia, Northern Territory and Queensland, from October 2013. ONE of the world’s most exclusive and awardwinning vessels, the 100-passenger SeaDream II, is heading to Asia and Australia for the first time after completing next year’s Mediterranean season. SeaDream Yacht Club has announced full details of the new program, which starts with the ‘Passage to the Far East’ from Athens to Mumbai on 12 October 2013. The yacht then sets sail for Singapore via Colombo (Sri Lanka) and Phuket (Thailand), offering 18 Asian itineraries until April 2014. SeaDream II makes its maiden call in Australia, arriving in Darwin on 25 January 2014, halfway through a voyage from Bali to Cairns (18 January – 1 February). Other ports of call on the 15-night cruise include Indonesia’s Satonde Island, Komodo

Captain Cook Cruises paints the harbour gold SITTING on the top deck of Captain Cook Cruises’ MV Sydney 2000 sipping champagne and eating canapés as Sydney Harbour begins to dress her dark waters in evening finery of lights and stars, it is easy to understand why the company’s Gold Dinner Cruise is such a strong drawcard for tourists and locals alike. Cruise Weekly recently had the opportunity to experience the exclusive voyage, which departs seven evenings a week at 7pm from Circular Quay and 7.30pm from King Street Wharf. The evening’s festivities kicked off with priority boarding at 6.30pm, followed by a welcome reception on Sydney 2000’s top deck. After departure, guests were moved into the upperdeck restaurant for a luxuriant six course degustation menu accompanied by matching wines, and the smooth sounds of a pianist. Once seated it was hard not to get caught slack jaw gazing out the panoramic windows at the twinkling lights, mannerly mansions, secret sandy beaches, city scapes and rough hewn bush covered contours that make up the border of Sydney before she plunges into the harbour. The next two and a half hours of the voyage CW spent filling up with course after course of fine food, served by Captain Cook’s friendly wait staff, with dishes including pan fried scallop with pickled seaweed, seared tuna

wasabi soya mirin with salmon pearls; and duck confit pumpkin gnocchi; as well as seared aged beef fillet sauteed peas and pancetta, caramelized onion, veal jus and desire potatoes. Each course was accompanied by a wine selected specially to accompany the dish, and just when it seemed a physical impossibility to eat or drink anything more, the evening was capped off with an espresso coffee to waken wine lulled minds, before Sydney 2000 pulled up her pew and deposited guests back into the throng of Sydney’s nightlife. The voyage is priced from $219 including a bar package and $199 without the bar, whilst guests can also pay an extra $25 to ensure they are given a window table. Island, Larantuka, Kupang and Dili (Timor-Leste), and after Darwin, it visits Seven Spirit Bay, Cape York, Lizard Island, Low Island, Port Douglas and Cairns. The next 14-night sailing, departing from Cairns on 1 February, returns to Bali via five ports in Papua New Guinea and three Indonesian islands. President of SeaDream, Bob Lepisto, told Cruise Weekly he was “thrilled” with the new itineraries, which have already opened for bookings to past passengers and travel agents. “We are venturing off to Asia and Northern Australia based on the interests of our loyal guests and our sincere feeling that these unique new voyages will also be very attractive to new guests. Lepisto is confident that one-third of guests will be Australians. “Our loyal guests from Australia do a great job in telling not only their travel agents how much they enjoy the casually elegant megayacht voyage experience on SeaDream, but also their friends and relatives. “In the past, during this time of year our Australian guests would have to fly all the way to the Caribbean or the Amazon to sail with us, but now we will be far closer and in some incredibly interesting small ports.” All-inclusive fares start at US$9,999pp twinshare (plus port and handling fees) including open bar, room service, gratuities, water sports from the onboard marina and “shore side casuals” activities with the crew. For details, see www.seadream.com.

Caravias was taking photos of a 16-foot great white shark whilst also dangling a piece of tuna over and in the water then withdrawing it before the shark could eat it. Moments later the shark burst out of the water and towards Caravias, who only just managed to get out of the way. “The shark must have come only an inch from us and I was convinced we were goners,” he said. “This was a complete freak incident but it definitely puts you in your place, it shows you cannot get complacent with the sharks,” he added. Christmas shopping and shipping by: Louise Goldsbury ’Tis the season to book your Christmas cruise, whether jetting off to the European markets or taking the family on a local getaway – including getting away from the cooking and cleaning. During the festive season, ships are decorated, choirs sing carols, Santa hands out presents, and special shows and entertainment are staged. Of course, there is always an outstanding Christmas Day dinner with turkey and all the trimmings, served by the waiting staff in style, as well as lunches, brunches, high teas and theme parties. Most Christmas cruises also hold religious services at sea. If the voyage extends to New Year, expect a big party with live music and a champagne countdown. Often overlooked are the shopping benefits of cruises at this time of year. If sailing in international waters, the ship’s duty-free stores are stocked with jewellery, perfume, aftershave, bottles of spirits and other great gift ideas. Items twin shared in US dollars are even better value for Australians. On river cruises, the central activity is shopping at the outdoor Christmas markets in Germany, Austria, Hungary, France and Switzerland. “Only in Europe can you get those centuries-old charming Christmas markets complete with all the trinkets, trimmings and regale,” says Avalon Waterways’ Christian Schweitzer. “I’ve encountered a number of Australians that have taken these cruises in early December, having stocked up on gifts and goodies from the Christmas markets, and returned home in time for Christmas.” River vessels also turn on the celebrations, from free Christmas concerts, to serving hot Glühwein to passengers at the end of a winter’s day. But time is running out for these popular experiences, with most
