Day 1 Depart London

Make your way to London Heathrow for your flight to Kolkata.

Day 2 Arrive Kolkata Today you’ll arrive in Kolkata, once the biggest colonial trade centre in Asia and the former capital of the British Raj. Be met on arrival at the airport, then transfer to your magnificent hotel. Special Stay – experience a stay at Kolkata’s ultimate classical residence, The Oberoi Grand, which has been standing for over 125 years. This evening, get to know your Tour Director and fellow travellers with a special Welcome Reception. Stay: Kolkata, The Oberoi Grand.

Day 3 Kolkata, Embark Lower Ganges River Cruise, Barrackpore This morning you’ll transfer to the brand-new RV Rajmahal for your Lower Ganges River cruise, taking you away from the tourist trail to offer an authentic glimpse of the real India. After lunch on board, you’ll cruise past the old Danish colony of Serampore to the former British garrison town of Barrackpore. Here, enjoy a guided walking tour among the 19th-century buildings and see the riverside Government House with its Semaphore Tower, part of a river signalling system. Then visit the elegant Neo-Greek Temple of Fame and the gardens of Flagstaff House, which now serves as repository for colonial statues removed from Kolkata. Day 4 Chandernagore, Chinsura, Hooghly This morning, cruise upstream to the former French colony of Chandernagore. During a walk around the town, you could be forgiven for thinking that the French had never left. Stroll along the Chandannagore Strand and visit its 200-year-old church. Then, on a visit to the house of former French Governor Joseph François Dupleix, discover an impressive collection of French antiques. Continue cruising to Chinsura where, upon disembarking, you’ll ride a rickshaw to the 17th-century Dutch cemetery. Later, head to Hooghly and visit the 19th-century Hooghly Imambara, built by one of Bengal’s most prolific philanthropists. BLD

Day 5 Kalna, Nabadwip, Mayapur Disembark in Kalna, known as the ‘City of Temples’. On a rickshaw tour, visit some of Bengal’s most distinct terracotta temples, including the eye-catching Shiva Temple, with two concentric circles made up of 108 double-vaulted shrines. Continue by rickshaw through the countryside to the pilgrimage centre of Nabadwip, where the river ghats (steps) are lined with active temples. During your time here, gaze across to the opposite riverbank to see the unique skyline of Mayapur, dominated by the vast new ISKCON temple, headquarters of the Hari Krishna community. BLD

Day 6 Matiari, Plassey Today you’ll disembark for a visit to the brass-working village of Matiari. Here, learn about the traditional methods of beating brass. Then cruise on to the site of The Battle of Plassey – a momentous event of 1757. Learn how this pivotal battle established the British East India Company rule in Bengal, which expanded over much of India for the next hundred years. BLD

Day 7 Murshidabad Disembark in Murshidabad this morning and travel by rickshaw to the Khushbagh, a peaceful Moghul-style garden enclosing the tomb of the last Nawab of Bengal. After exploring here, continue along the riverbanks to Hazarduari Palace, which boasts 1,000 doors and houses an extensive collection of European paintings, china and weapons. Following the tour here, you’ll visit Nashipara Palace and Katgola Palace, both fine examples of the fusion between English and Indian cultures of the 19th-century ‘White Moghul’ period. BLD

Day 8 Baranagar, Hooghly River Disembark in the sleepy village of Baranagar this morning where, on a walk through fields and past terracotta temples, you’ll experience rural India at its most idyllic. Once you’re back on board, enjoy the rest of the day to unwind as your river ship glides along the Hooghly River, a continuation of the Lower Gange River that twists and turns between banks lined with mustard fields and mango orchards. Day 9 Jangipur, Gaur, Pandua Today you have a choice of two sightseeing activities. Perhaps stay onboard and cruise from Jangipur to the Farakka Barrage. The afternoon is then at your leisure. Alternatively, take a day trip to the deserted city of Gaur, a unique archeological site. Then continue to Pandua to explore the remains of the Adina Mosque. BLD

Day 10 Farakka, Kolkata

Traditional Delicacy

Rise early and disembark your river ship in Farakka. Like a Local – transfer to a local train for the colourful and rustic journey back to Kolkata. Make your way past bellowing food hawkers and over-laden porters to your rail carriage. Once you’ve settled in to your seat, watch the landscapes of India unfold before you. A Taste of India – enjoy a Bengali lunch at the award-winning Oh! Calcutta restaurant. Later, during a city tour, you’ll visit Nirmal Hriday, the first institution established in 1950 by Mother Teresa, as well as the Kalighat Temple and the Victoria Memorial. Day 3 Beijing, Forbidden City Your sightseeing begins with a half-day tour of Tian’anmen Square, the world’s largest city square. Continue to the World Heritage-listed Forbidden City, an well-preserved site of Chinese architecture that was home to 24 Chinese emperors between 1420 and 1924. Enjoy free time this afternoon, with your Travelmarvel Tour Director on hand to recommend optional activities. A Taste of China – indulge in a Peking Duck banquet at a local restaurant this evening. Day 4 Beijing, Great Wall of China After breakfast, head to the Great Wall of China, which winds its way from the Yellow Sea into the Gobi Desert. Board a cable car and take in the views on the way to the Mutianyu section, one of the best-preserved parts of the wall. After, visit the Sacred Way of the Ming Dynasty Tombs, then stop at a jade factory for lunch, and gain an insight into the 6,000 yearold craft of grinding and polishing jade. On the way back to the city, see Beijing’s Olympic Village, including the Bird’s Nest stadium. BL


Like a Local – this morning hop on a pedicab for a tour through the hutongs (narrow streets) of Old Beijing. Explore the maze of historic alleyways and visit the home of a local family. Then transfer to the airport and fly to Yichang, enjoying lunch during the flight. On arrival, board your river ship for your Yangtze cruise. Day 6 Three Gorges Dam, Xiling Gorge Take in the breathtaking scenery today as you cruise through the Three Gorges region, considered to be China’s most picturesque region. On arrival at the Three Gorges Dam, you’ll disembark for a guided tour, before continuing on cruising through the longest of the Three Gorges, Xiling Gorge. BLD

Day 7 Daning River, Wu Gorge, Qutang Gorge Early risers may like to commence the day with a Tai Chi class on board. Today’s excursion is to the crystal-clear waters of the Daning River, home to the smaller but equally stunning Three Lesser Gorges: Dragon Gate; Misty; and Emerald Green. Afterwards, continue on to Wu Gorge, noted for its quiet beauty, sheer peaks and towering cliff faces. After lunch, pass between two mountains on the way into Qutang Gorge, the narrowest and most dramatic of the Three Gorges. BLD

Day 8 Shibao Zhai, Fengdu After breakfast this morning, disembark your ship for a tour of Shibao Zhai tower, an impressive wooden structure built atop a large hill that overlooks the river. Also known as the ‘Precious Stone Fortress’, this ancient pagoda



stands an astonishing12 storeys high and houses many cultural relics including fine examples of calligraphy and painting. After exploring, continue along the Yangtze to Fengdu (subject to river conditions). Disembark and wander through this graceful little ‘Ghost City’, noted for its bustling markets and the many Buddha and Tao temples gathered on Ming Mountain. In the evening, enjoy a sumptuous dinner to signify your final night on board. BLD

Day 9 Chongqing, Disembark Ship, Xi’an Disembark your ship this morning in Chongqing, a strategic port established in the 11th century that played a key role in World War II due to its mountainous landscape. Head to the Chongqing Zoo, where more than 200 varieties of wild and rare animals are on display, including the famous Giant Pandas. This beautiful creature is fast replacing the dragon as China’s emblem and has been kept in zoos since the early Han Dynasty – over 2,000 years ago. Later, transfer to the airport and fly to Xi’an. Day 10 Xi’an, Terracotta Army On the way to the Museum of Qin Terracotta Warriors and Horses, visit a clay factory where Terracotta soldiers are still made today. At the museum, visit the three excavation pits where the sculptures were buried over time and marvel at the Bronze Chariot. Like a Local – this evening, step out for a visit to the Muslim Quarter. Explore the numerous food stalls filled with exotic treats, peruse through the souvenir markets and visit the Great Mosque. BL

Day 11 Xi’an, Shanghai, Wuzhen Enjoy the morning at leisure before flying to Shanghai. From here, travel to the ancient water town of Wuzhen and see where Marco Polo roamed, as you discover the beautiful canals and charming cobblestone streets. Enjoy the evening at leisure. Day 13 Shanghai Like a Local – discover why China was ‘built on tea’, as you partake in a traditional tea ceremony at a pagoda within the majestic Yu Yuan Gardens. Afterwards, continue to explore the lavish gardens, including its impressive Jade Rock boulder, then take a tour of Shanghai’s Old City. Day 3 Yangon After a sumptuous breakfast, enjoy the morning at your leisure to explore this amazing city. Your Travelmarvel Tour Director will be able to provide assistance in arranging optional sightseeing excursions. Later this afternoon, visit the Reclining Buddha and marvel at the Shwedagon Pagoda, resplendent with a golden spire that dominates the skyline for sunset. This evening, return to your hotel, where you will enjoy time at your leisure. B

Day 4 Yangon, Inle Lake Transfer to Yangon airport for your included flight to Inle Lake. Upon arrival at Heho airport, be met by your driver and transfer to the picturesque Ayetharyar Winery. After a delicious lunch, head to Nyaung Shwe Jetty and transfer to your hotel in Inle Lake. Famed for its wetland ecosystem and home to many migratory birds, Inle Lake is home to the INTHAS, the name given to the local people that live in this region, meaning “sons of the lake”. This region is famous for the way INTHAS propel their boats using their leg as an oar known as the one-legged rowers. Day 5 Inle Lake, Indein After breakfast, take a traditional long-tail boat for an insider sightseeing excursion of Inle Lake. Visit one of the local roving markets, which rotate throughout the villages in the region. Keep an eye out for the local INTHAS who are famous for their unique leg-rowing, making floating islands, building houses and constructing monasteries on the lake. A Taste of Burma - set amongst the spectacular bamboo forest, indulge in superb Inthar specialities straight from the Shan kitchen, at Ann’s Restaurant. After lunch, visit Indein on the western banks of the lake, where you will have the perfect opportunity to explore the great historical treasure of the Indein Ruins and hundreds of Shanstyle stupas on the hillside. Day 6 Inle Lake, Mandalay This morning, embark on a sightseeing adventure with perhaps a visit to the Silverware Cottage at Ywama Village. Then, see the famous Phaung Taw Oo Pagoda and the weaving village of Inn Paw Khon, famous for its silk-weaving industry. Other options include visiting a blacksmith’s cottage and a cheroot cigar-making house. After a delicious lunch at Intha Heritage, be driven back to your hotel and transfer to Heho airport for your included flight to Mandalay, where you will transfer to your hotel on arrival. Enjoy a tantalising dinner at A Little Bit of Mandalay restaurant this evening. BLD

Day 7 Mandalay Rise early for an enticing breakfast, then head out on a morning walking tour of Mandalay’s main markets, the famous Zegyo Market. For the rest of the morning, visit the Shwe In Bin Teak Monastery; discover a stone carving quarter; pay respect to the Mahamuni Buddha Image and partake in a gold leaf workshop. Afterwards, visit the ancient Lawkanandar Pagoda. Traverse towering pagodas and magnificent temples dating back over a millennium, including Shwe Gu Gyi temple with its magnificent panoramic views of Bagan, Thatbyinnyu Temple, Ananda Temple and Damayangyi Temple. Like a Local - later this afternoon, enjoy an ox-cart ride to the Shwezigon Pagoda and Shwesandaw Pagoda. Day 10 Bagan, Yangon Visit a traditional lacquer-making shop and explore the surrounding villages in the area. This afternoon, transfer to Nyaung Oo airport for your included flight to Yangon. After arriving at your hotel, set off on a sightseeing adventure of Yangon city. See its unpaved streets lined with old wooden shuttered houses, medicine shops, temples and colourful markets. Visit the picturesque street of Shwebontha, with its leafy sidewalks, tea shops and magnificent colonial buildings. This evening, enjoy a special Farewell Dinner at Pandomar Restaurant. BD

Day 3 Cu Chi Tunnels, Saigon

Day 5 Cai Be, Vinh Long

Visit the incredible floating markets of Cai Be. Then go ashore to see Cai Be’s French Gothic Cathedral and picturesque port area. Later, enjoy lunch back on board as your ship cruises towards Vinh Long, where you’ll enjoy a boat ride and visit a bustling market. BLD

Day 6 Sa Dec, Xeo Quyt, Tan Chau

Take a boat ride past floating markets en route to Sa Dec, the city where the French writer Marguerite Duras met her chinese lover, Huynh Thuy Le. Take a tour of Huynh Thuy Le’s former home. Travel to Xeo Quyt, a Viet Cong jungle stronghold. Later, cruise to the peaceful town of Tan Chau. BLD

Day 7 Tan Chau, Border Crossing

Transfer to a small boat this morning, and travel along the Mekong’s tiny tributaries. Step ashore on a remote evergreen island to see authentic rural Mekong life. Visit a floating fish farm, then tour Tan Chau by rickshaw. BLD

Day 8 Phnom Penh

A tour of Phnom Penh takes you to visit the magnificent Royal Palace, the official residence of the King of Cambodia. You’ll also see the opulent Silver Pagoda. Later, join an excursion to the infamous killing fields and the Tuol Sleng genocide museum, on the site of the Khmer Rouge’s notorious security prison 21 (S-21). Dinner tonight is followed by a Khmer folk performance. BLD

Day 9 Chong Koh, Oudong, Kampong Tralach

Take a walk around the silk-weaving village of Chong Koh before travelling by coach to Oudong. Tour the mystical city’s monastery and receive a Buddhist blessing. Later, head to Kampong Tralach to visit Wat Kapong Tralach Pleu Pagoda. Then board an ox-cart - a popular form of transport in rural Cambodia - and take in the local countryside as you travel to the Tonle River. BLD
