L I N DA A N D CO O P E R S H A R E THEIR While CRU Camps are enjoyed by hundreds of kids every camp season, some families simply can’t afford them because of their personal circumstances. Linda is a single mum of three kids. Her son, Cooper, is in Year 12 and recently attended a Crusaders Study Camp. Linda shares, “Several years ago we left a violent family home with just the clothes on our backs. Cooper is my eldest son so he was more aware of what was going on, and he’s really stepped up as a role model for his younger brother and sister. He’s very protective of his family and has taken on a bit of a father role, which I think often happens when you come from a broken family.”

“It’s been very difficult to make ends meet because we had to start from scratch, and I would never have been able to afford something like a CRU Camp due to our financial constraints. When I came across the Sponsorship Fund on Crusaders’ website, I was so grateful that Cooper would be able to go along with his friends, get hours of study done every day and spend time with the leaders and mentors. He loved the quiet times on camp and gained a lot of confidence from the experience. I am so happy that he could have the same opportunity as others, and I want to thank everyone who donated to the sponsorship fund for looking out for kids like Cooper, regardless of the background that they come from.” Linda, parent P L E A S E H E L P OT H E R FA M I L I E S I N N E E D, L I K E L I N DA A N D C O O P E R , BY G I V I N G TO T H E C R U A D O P T-A- C A M P E R F U N D.

Our dedicated teams of Christian leaders care for campers 24 hours a day. They are trained in child protection procedures, reference checked and screened in accordance with government legislation. Their love for God and young people makes them brilliant role models. Each camp has a ratio of at least 1 leader to every 5 campers and at least 2 leaders with First Aid qualifications to ensure that each camper receives an exceptional level of care. A camp ‘mum’ and ‘dad’ also attend primary age camps to care for the emotional needs of young campers.

Our nurturing camp environment is one where your child will feel accepted, cared for and encouraged. Through the activities, leaders help your child to develop teamwork, cooperation and communication skills whilst also challenging them to step out of their comfort zone to achieve new things. Meals, discussion times and the encouraging camp environment help campers to come away with strong confidence, character and social skills. Our camps are alcohol, tobacco and drug free environments.

We work hard to offer quality programs at the lowest possible price. This season our camp fees start at just $50 a day for Day Camps. Residential camps start at $72 per day, which includes all activities, meals, accommodation, 24-hour supervision and transport for most activity camps. A sponsorship fund exists to help families in need send their children to camp. Visit the cost and sponsorship page at crucamps.com.au for details on how to apply.

"We love sending Annabel on CRU Camps because we know she's guaranteed a great time and we can relax, knowing that she is in excellent care. The directors and leaders are enthusiastic, well-trained and always looking out for the welfare of the kids. Annabel recently went on CrossTrain camp in Spring and simply loved it; she always comes back with a big smile and lots of great memories!"

What can CRU Camps offer that professional gymnastics never could? CRU Camps offer something that no sport can offer and that thing is a message that you are loved by a God who accepts you just as you are and you can live your life with him now and forevermore. A satisfaction and identity that no career, sport or amount of success can compare with!

• SPEC

What was it like to compete at such a high level of competition? Competing at an international level was an awesome experience. I was injured at the time so I didn’t do my best, yet the atmosphere and preparation was interesting. I was on the other side of the world, experiencing jet lag and training leading up until the competition. There wasn’t any expectations for us as a team in this competition so the pressures weren’t too high. I’ve been more nervous in national competitions because there is more expectation!

What is the best thing about CRU Camps? The best thing ever is seeing a camper experience God’s love for the first time in their life. There is nothing that brings more joy to my heart than seeing someone learn that they will live forever with Jesus. CRU Camps are also so much fun. I know that if I’m having fun then all the campers should be!

ER

Harry has competed for Australia in gymnastics and is an active CRU Camps leader. We recently sat down with him to find out more about what his experiences in gymnastics were like and why he’ll be speaking on CRU Hype this summer!

What are you going to be doing next? I’m looking to be an active teacher whilst I’m speaking in church. I’m also exploring where God wants me to be in my fulltime career. I’m still not completely sure what I’ll do but I’m searching with Him as I learn to enjoy life.

F

HARRY

Why do you lead on CRU Camps? I lead on CRU Camps because I love Jesus and I believe that He wants to reach everyone in the world with His love and bring them eternal life. CRU Camps are an effective way I can be involved in God’s master plan to save the world.

An ancient treasure of so much worth it can only be mentioned in whispers. However, it has fallen into the hands of some of the most dangerous pirates known to sail the seven seas. They must be stopped! A team of treasure hunters embarked on an expedition to recover the treasure, but have not been heard from in months. Your quest is to rescue the treasure hunters, recapture the legendary prize and escape from Treasure Island to tell the tale! But this quest is not for the faint-hearted. CRU CAMPS SUMMER 16–17

C R U S T U DY CAMPS? CRU Study Camps provide the ideal study environment. Free from the distractions of home. Our Christian leadership teams assist you to combat distraction and support you as you tackle the pressures of Year 12. They will help you keep your life in perspective with thought-provoking Christian talks and chances to chat about your worldview. What does a day on a Study Camp look like? Camp programs vary dependent on site schedules, but all camps include at least 6 hours study on each full day of camp.

WHO LEADS CRU STUDY CAMPS? We met James & Polly Butterworth, who are so excited to be directing this season on Summer Study 2!

Can I receive assistance with my study? Each CRU Camp is run by a Christian leadership team which includes teachers, uni students and full-time workers with a wide range of expertise, graduate and post-graduate qualifications. Our leaders are committed to helping you achieve your study goals and think about post school life! Leadership teams and qualifications vary between camps. While we aim to cover a broad range of subjects, we can’t guarantee what areas will be covered on each camp.

Name and current occupation & backgrounds James has a background in psychology and is currently studying to be a maths and chemistry teacher. Polly has trained as an English and music teacher, and spent last year working as a youth worker and Christian studies teacher. She is now at Bible college and hopes to become a school chaplain.

How far in advance do registrations open? We open CRU Study Camp registrations online two school terms in advance (e.g. bookings for winter will open at the start of term 1). Are IB students able to come? Definitely! The main focus of camp is to maximise independent study and IB Diploma students often use the distraction free time to complete and gain feedback on their extended essays. In addition, assistance is provided by leaders in a range of common subject areas. A selection of camps each year may offer specific IB assistance and on every camp the leadership teams of university students, teachers and other graduates are able to give general assistance and essay feedback. Can I use the internet on camp? To minimise distractions, full internet access is not normally provided. Please make sure that you have downloaded all research and resources necessary before you come to camp. Please be aware that some of the camp sites we use are in remote locations and internet USB/smart phone tethering may have limited or no coverage.

CRU CAMPS SUMMER 16–17

When did you first get involved with CRU & what has been your history since? We both started leading CRU Study Camps in our first year out of school after being campers during high school. For the last 7 years we’ve been involved in at least one camp every year, including three that we have directed, and we’ve run seminars at CRU camp training events. Why do you direct camp? We both started volunteering with CRU because we wanted to help students prepare for their HSC and to consider the claims of Christianity. Since then, we’ve continued to volunteer because we see how much of an amazing gospel opportunity it is. The overwhelming majority of campers leave at the end of a week with not only more academic knowledge, but with a greater understanding of who God is. Each year we’re amazed at what God is doing through these camps and it’s really exciting to be a part of that. What is it like being the director on camp? Being a director requires work, but it’s made a lot easier by the training and support we’re given by CRU. It involves training and caring for a team as well as logistical and administrative tasks. We never feel alone in these roles as together with our volunteer team and those guiding us at CRU, camps are always a team effort. Joining with other Christians to help tell students of the great news of Christ leaves us greatly encouraged, it’s a wonderful opportunity to be able to share in such a ministry.

S T U DY Kick start 2017 and your Year 12 prep on our CRU Summer Study Camp this January! Here are 3 reasons why Study Camp will be the most productive week of your Summer:

1.

You’ll get plenty of study done. Each day there is plenty of time to study, giving you the opportunity to finish your assessments, catch up on homework and get your notes in order to prepare you for your big year ahead. Experienced leaders are also on hand to help you with a broad range of subjects.

2.

You’ll enjoying meeting new people. Out of the study room there’s plenty of time to chill with friends by the pool, burn off energy playing sports, and kick back with music, snacks and summer sunshine too.

3.

You’ll get to investigate the claims of Jesus. During the week you will hear talks and be in discussion groups that will discuss the claims of Jesus. It is a rare opportunity in your busy year in which you will be able to listen to and investigate these important claims.
