Poisonings by Central Nervous System (CNS) Stimulants and Depressants The majority of people admitted to emergency rooms for CNS stimulant poisoning were men (63%). Stimulants used include Adderall, Ritalin and MDMA or Ecstasy. Stimulants increase alertness and awareness and improve concentration. Chart 13.

The majority of those who overdose on central nervous system depressants and anesthetics were women (61%). Benzodiazepines, such as Valium and Xanax are sometimes prescribed to treat anxiety, acute stress reactions, and panic attacks. The more sedating benzodiazepines are prescribed for short-term treatment of sleep disorders. Usually, benzodiazepines are not prescribed for long term use because of the risk for developing tolerance, dependence, or addiction. 12
