The Highlights Summer 2011 ‘The Family School of Choice’

Year 8‟s sensational production of Macbeth caused a real stir in the Crosfields Theatre. With a dark and eerie set the cast presented a gripping, musical production of this well-known Shakespearean tragedy.

When Year 7 children at Crosfields discussed the Japanese earth quake and resulting tsunami in a PSHE lesson they decided they had to do something to help. During their interactive assembly the group promoted the idea of the big bake off, encouraging everyone to go home and get cooking for a charity cake sale.

Year 7 pupils created their own unique wire sculptures during their highly successful Art Day.

Suitably dressed in red, white and blue the children enjoyed „French Dayâ€&#x; packed with activities to immerse them in French culture, cuisine and cycling; through a special Tour de Crosfields in the school grounds.

The Junior School entertained guests with their modern, musical twist on the tale of „Puss In Boots‟; „Cats in Uggs!‟

Year 8 pupils become Prefects Children from Nursery, Reception and Year 1 delighted their guests at the Summer Concert. The theme for the Concert was Water and right on the time the heavens opened and the rain came down, just as Reception was singing „Wonderful Water‟.

Crosfields budding pianist Faye Evans, (10) was specially chosen by the world renowned Chinese pianist Lang Lang, to perform in his “Massed Piano Day” concert at London‟s Royal Festival Hall in May. Pianists and pianos fill the impressive Royal Festival Hall stage in a concert led by Lang Lang. The musician led the ensemble of talented young pianists aged 5 to 23 in a combined performance of works by Schubert, Mozart, Chopin, Copeland, Bach, Rachmaninov, Silvestri, Khachaturian and Beethoven.

Thirty Crosfieldsâ€&#x; children plus one member of staff enjoyed participating in the Shiplake 10km Scramble. This is a fantastic run starting at Shiplake College on the banks of the River Thames.

Year 5 girls enjoyed attending a Lacrosse Coaching Camp hosted by Queen Anneâ€&#x;s Caversham on Saturday 11th June. The morning provided pupils with an opportunity to try their hand at lacrosse, many for the first time.

Pre-Prep, Junior and Senior Sports Days were all a great success this term. So many parents and guests came to cheer on the children as they competed for their houses in both track and field events.

The Crosfields MindLab Olympics team came second in the National MindLab Olympics which took place on 21st May at St. Piranâ€&#x;s School, Maidenhead. The Mind Lab Olympics is an educational event that brings together children from all over the world in a fantastic championship of thinking games, which is both tremendously exciting and enjoyable.

Year 5 stepped back in time to the Victorian era when they visited Reading Museum for an interactive history day, designed to bring their study of Victorian England to life.

The outdoor classroom which has been created in the heart of the Crosfields School grounds was a hive of activity this term as pupils enjoyed their lessons outdoors. The recent addition of two large work benches under the canopy transforms the area into a real classroom space.

Well done to all the members of Year 8 on their splendid Common Entrance Exam results. All passed with flying colours into their senior school which this year included Abingdon School, Bearwood College, Bradfield College, Leighton Park School, Pangbourne College, Reading Boysâ€&#x; School, Reading Blue Coat School, Shiplake College, The Oratory School and Wellington College. After all their hard work, the boys enjoyed a post-exam adventure holiday in Cornwall.

The Senior Inter-House Quiz brought children from the four houses face to face to do-battle during the last week of term. Pupils from Park, Lake, School and Marlborough Houses went head to head over a series of testing rounds, a broad range of topics were covered

Congratulations to all the children who performed at the Year 2 Concert. The afternoon showcased the musical and singing talents of the year group. Many children took to the stage to perform solo pieces on the violin, guitar, piano and recorder.

The sun shone for Speech Day and over 1,000 visitors were welcomed to school to celebrate another successful year at Crosfields. Guests gathered to watch the children perform in the quad, toured the classrooms to see the children‟s work and took their seats to hear the formal speeches from Charles Bradfield, Chair of Governors, Jonathan Wansey, Headmaster, Felicity Lusk, Head of Abingdon School and Year 8 pupils. Guest speaker, Miss Lusk presented „Special Mention‟ certificates to chosen pupils across the year groups.

Crosfields School held a special ceremony to celebrate the wedding of HRH Prince William to Catherine Middleton. The whole school joined together in the quad to sing the National Anthem whilst waving their flags and gave „three cheers‟ to the Royal Couple.
