IS the Tuesday second-hand market too tatty for a 21st century market town? It seems the developer behind the market redevelopment thinks so because traders have been told there’ll be no room for the Tuesday and Sunday second-hand markets once the new market is built. “This can’t happen,” said customer Diane Bates, 64, of Darton. “It’s not shabby. It’s shabby chic. It’s vintage. It’s what people want. “I’ve been coming to the second-hand market nearly 50 years, since I went to art school when I was 15. “Where else can I buy a beautiful woollen coat, with the label ‘made in England’. Absolute quality. That’s what you get. “What a loss it would be to Barnsley.” Diane, dressed mainly in second-hand ‘vintage’ items bought from the market, was visiting Gail Rowe’s stall. Gail said: “I first stood on the market when I was 19 years old. “I’m 46 now. I’ve had five years off, but I came back because it’s almost like it’s part of my family. “I love it. I haven’t been on holiday for seven years. I don’t see the need to because I love my job. “To take it away from people seems so unfair.” Trader Rodger Bell said the council has mentioned trying to find another site for the second-hand market. “Where’s that going to be? Somewhere

out on a limb, the other side of the railway line? “It needs to be part of the market where people are going to come. “They want the new market to trade six days a week, day in day out, the same people. “Who’s going to come when it’s the same every day?” Simon Butterfield, another trader, added: “Barnsley isn’t like London, where you’ve thousands of tourists, different people every day.” Stallholder Anne Sutcliffe added: “In this day and age, when money’s tight, people are going to want more secondhand goods, not less.” The council said the letter sent to traders was a consultation exercise, and it is too early to say what the future will be for the second-hand market. Spokesman Anne Untisz said: “As Barnsley residents and traders will be aware, plans for the market project are at an early stage and therefore both the car boot and second-hand market will continue to trade as normal. “We will keep traders and Barnsley residents updated on plans for the new market project.” Traders plan to start a petition to keep a second-hand market at the ‘heart of the market’.
