Charity paddle floats Roy’s boat A JOINER who built his own kayak will put it through its paces when he paddles it from Liverpool to Goole. Roy Williams, 49, of St Thomas’s Road, Redbrook, has since built two more for his daughter Louise and her boyfriend Jon. “They said why don’t we do something for Comic Relief, and sail across the English Channel,” said Roy. “I said ‘don’t be ridiculous’. But I said we should try to think of something a bit more achievable. “So I came up with this idea of doing Liverpool to Goole, which is almost coast to coast,

along the canal.” Roy has no particular kayaking experience, but he has tested the kayak off Flamborough. “It floated, fortunately,” he said. The self-employed joiner made the kayaks in his back garden. He put a tent up to cover them if it rained. So far 11 people have signed up to join him on the 152mile trip. They have raised £150 already and hope to raise at least £2,000 by the time they set off in March. “We’ve given ourselves a week, hopefully finishing on Red Nose Day itself.”

CALL FOR PUBLIC TO SHARE HEALTH TIPS BY KATE PICKLES HEALTH bosses want people to share their health tips to help Barnsley shed its flabby image. NHS Barnsley is after advice on staying fit and healthy to inspire anyone struggling to keep in shape. Director of public health Elisabeth Shassere said a lot of people in Barnsley had successfully lost weight. “While reports over recent years have placed Barnsley people among the fattest in the country the many people who do

lead healthier lives are often forgotten,” she said. “Like a lot of areas in England being overweight or obese is an issue for Barnsley but it is important to remember that many people have been very successful at losing weight and maintaining it in the long term. “The truth is lots of people do eat well, regularly exercise and are of a healthy weight, so it makes perfect sense to show others exactly how it can be done hopefully inspiring them to try out some new ideas.” Tips will be published on ets

PUPILS IN SECOND BUS CRASH Tate’s Travel 97 service bus. Her parents have recently received more than £1,000 compensation following the first crash. Her mum says she will sue again after the crash at about 8.15 last Monday morning. “She’s absolutely traumatised,” said the mum, who is driving her to school and back every day now. “She didn’t want to go back on it after the last crash but I told her ‘it’s just a one off’. I made her go back on. But this time I can’t make her go back on it again.” The Tate’s double-decker

BY MIKE COTTON A TEENAGE girl from Barnsley is scared to get the bus to school after being injured in her second bus crash in a year. The 14-year-old from the Darton area, who doesn’t want to be identified, was among about 45 taken to hospital following the latest crash between two buses at Hall Green in Wakefield on her way to Kettlethorpe High School. Most were from the Barnsley area. She went to hospital with minor injuries. It is the second time in a year she has been hurt in a crash on the

was run as a service bus rather than a school bus, but it was mainly school children onboard. None were thought to be seriously injured. The driver is thought to have passed out at the wheel. The Chronicle understands he also works as a private hire taxi-driver but his employers say he was always fully rested and fit for work. Graham Mallinson, managing director of Tate’s Travel, said: “We have professional drivers. The driver was breathalysed at the scene, which proved neutral. “The vehicle was free of mechanical defects, it was

MOT’d. Unfortunately, accidents do happen. It’s very unfortunate that this has happened to the same group.” Some parents complained the driver had been abusive to the children, but Graham said he had never received any complaints.

He also said parents had asked that a ‘regular’ driver look after the route. Headteacher from Kettlethorpe High, Tudor Griffiths, said: “If parents have any concerns about pupil’s transport arrangements we urge them to contact us so we can discuss the issues.”

Ring of fire: Wrestler ‘Killer’ Karl Connors.

BY DAY Karl Lawson is a modest bespectacled 18year-old from Worsbrough Dale. But at night he transforms into ‘Killer’ Karl Connors. He wants to make a career in the world of professional wrestling and is preparing for his first fight. He is taking on Jonny Rose – a former WWE star – in Barnsley. “I’m excited but I’ve got butterflies as big as eagles,” said Karl. “Jonny Rose wrestled for WWE so it is a bit opportunity for me. He’s a great wrestler and by being in the ring with him I will learn something.” Karl, of Harriet Court, has been training for about 18 months at a gym in Swinton after being

inspired by former greats like Big Daddy and Giant Haystacks as well as American wrestlers. “I watched wrestling for a few years with my mum and dad and granddad. I right enjoyed it so thought I’d give it a go. “Training involves a lot of moves and fitness and it takes a toll on your body.” His trainer Brad Taylor, 20, of Swinton, will be on the same bill as ‘Killer’ Karl when their wrestling spectacular comes to Highstone Road WMC on Monday, February 21. He said: “A lot of people say it’s fake, well it is a form of entertainment and it’s a show but everything we do is 100 per cent real.” Information: 281713.

‘NEWBORNS SHOULD HAVE HEART TESTS’ BY KATE PICKLES A MOTHER wants all newborn babies to have their heart rates monitored after a lifethreatening condition was missed when her daughter was born. Tanesha Ives, aged 19 months, was born with a large hole in her heart and a missing heart valve but this was diagnosed only three weeks later. She needed open-heart surgery when she was five weeks old and had a pace-

maker fitted five months ago to regulate her heartbeat. But mum Amanda Bell, of Radcliffe Road, Athersley North, said the condition, which is often identified during pregnancy, would have been diagnosed earlier if she had been given the simple test, where a sensor is clipped on to a baby’s finger. “Her hands and feet were blue when she was born but doctors put it down to the drugs I was given during labour,” said Amanda, 36.

“If they had done a test to show her heart beat and oxygen levels they would have known something was wrong. We were in hospital three days and she slept most of the time. When we went home she wasn’t feeding and was losing weight. “She was being sick a lot and I knew something wasn’t right.” Tanesha was readmitted to Barnsley Hospital when she was three weeks old and doctors found she had a heart murmur. They transferred her to a specialist unit at Leeds General Infirmary and she had emergency surgery two weeks later. “The doctors said the hole

in her heart was so large it had to be repaired and because it involved the valve as well, she couldn’t live with it like that. “If it had been diagnosed earlier then she would have been delivered by Caesarian section early and it would have been at Leeds where they have the specialist unit. “She wouldn’t have had surgery until she was at least three months old as there was a much greater risk with her having it at five weeks. “The doctors put it down to drugs but a pulse oximetry test would have shown it wasn’t.” The hospital was unavailable to comment.

Haydn Shanley is studying for a BA(Hons) Film, Animation, Music and Enterprise degree at the University Campus Barnsley (UCB), he tells us: ‘I chose UCB because it was the only place that offered the course I wanted to do, the course is pretty unique and really targeted to the industries I am interested in, film and music. Once I visited the campus, I found I preferred the smaller environment that you don’t get with other universities. I would rate the modules on the course as a 9 out of 10. Although I couldn’t pick favourites this early in the game, I enjoy all the modules equally. The facilities on the course are very high end, industry standard stuff. You can tell the tutors want you to do the best possible work you can, as they are constantly updating the equipment to better prepare us for the types of equipment we’ll be using in industry. I haven’t thought about what I want to do when I graduate yet, I’m still toying with ideas as I will be leaving with animation, direction, post-production, production, musical skills, so the opportunities are endless. My advice to anyone considering this course, or even considering going to university is make some enquiries. Whether you have vast, minimal or no experience in these subject areas you would be welcome to enrol as the course takes you from the basics upwards, so there is no need to worry about experience, although it wouldn’t hurt if you did have some. I would definitely recommend UCB to anyone who is considering university.’

your holiday than just basking in the sun, the area is ideal. Archaeological sites nearby include Efes, the second largest city in the Roman Empire. Another site, Pamukkale, is considered by many to be the eighth wonder of the world. If you prefer to explore Turkey’s underwater treasures, the scuba diving around Marmaris comes highly recommended. Beach bums can brown themselves in style on Cleopatra’s Island or paddle along to Turtle Beach. Marmaris boasts a 700berth marina, which attracts a flotilla of yachts and is a perfect place to people watch. Nights out in Marmaris are guaranteed to be fun, colourful, lively and unforgettable – rather like the resort itself. Marmaris is also a mecca for shoppers, with leather goods, natural sponges and the local blue glass beads, called Boncuk, among the bargains to be had in the bazaars. Meanwhile those looking for a cooler alternative should book a trip to the French Alps. January to March is the peak time for the best Alpine snow, with France boasting some of the most spectacular ski slopes in the world. There are a wide variety of resorts to choose from. Some are particularly good for family skiing holidays, others are geared up for the trendy skier and some are aimed at winter sports fans who like to travel in a big group and take over a chalet for a week. But they all seem to have one thing in common – plenty of runs ranging from a lazy ‘motorway’ cruise to that almost impossible ‘black’. There are dozens of package deals involving scheduled, charter or budget flights and the range of accommodation is diverse, from modest apartments to catered chalets and excellent hotels.

BOGUS CALLERS IN TAX SCAM HOUSEHOLDERS in Barnsley have been warned about a new council tax scam that promises financial rewards for paying the rate by direct debit. Calls and emails claiming to be from the ‘Council Tax Head Office in London’ offer residents refunds of hundreds of pounds if they set up regular payments. Recipients are asked to provide personal details, including their bank account numbers via telephone. But the ‘council tax head

Coun Alan Gardiner said: “Scammers are continually seeking new ways to make money from residents and the indications are this kind of activity is on the increase. “The offers may be very tempting but they can come at a cost. People should be very careful about being misled into disclosing personal information and using contact numbers that are offered to claim so-called rewards.”

09.02.11 Advertiser’s Announcement

Barnsley Car Warehouse has extended its forecourt at its premises on North Gawber Industrial Park, Mapplewell, to offer customers even more choice. The family-owned, independent car dealership has gone from strength-to-strength since it was established six years ago. Despite the recession last year's turnover was more than £1.1 million with a total of 341 vehicles sold to satisfied customers. On the back of this success, director Paul Lowe has taken the opportunity to give something back to his customers by offering them a larger range of quality, nearly new and second-hand cars. Barnsley Car Warehouse has one of the largest indoor heated showrooms in the area, boasting 30 cars. The new expansion has taken the number of cars on the forecourt from 60 to 100. Vehicles on show vary from small cars and family cars to 4x4s, sports cars and people carriers. "We appeal to the middle market with cars sold between £3,000 and £8,000," says Paul. "There are no pushy salesmen, just good, honest advice, great value for money and a high level of professionalism. "We invite customers to come and browse the new cars at their leisure. Where help is required our sales team, who do not work on commission, will be happy to assist. "The aim of the expansion is to be able to have four of each of the mainstream cars in stock in a

range of colours at any time." As part of the expansion the on-site workshop has been extended from one bay to three, offering servicing, MOTs and repairs carried out by a fully qualified and experienced mechanic. Barnsley Car Warehouse offers good part exchange deals and competitive finance rates. Staff do not receive commission on finance and search more than 32 companies to find customers the best possible deal to suit their budget with no hidden costs. A single in-house warranty is offered, from 21 days to three months depending on the age and price of car, so there is no confusion over what is, and is not, included. If a customer does have a problem with their new car they simply return it to the dealer who will happily supply them with a courtesy car while theirs is promptly repaired by the in-house mechanic. All cars undergo a stringent 122 point vehicle check and full valet prior to collection. There has never been a better time to visit Barnsley Car Warehouse with a huge range of vehicles on display and the winter sale underway with new cars being added this week. Check Barnsley Car Warehouse's weekly adverts in the Barnsley Chronicle for new car listings each week or visit the website at
