MEN DRAGGED IN AS BROADWAY MEETS BIRDWELL BY SAM LAWRENCE A BUNCH of Barnsley blokes has undergone a sparkling transformation from everyday lads to fabulous drag queen showgirls. The 14 men will star in a production of the Broadway musical La Cage Aux Folle at The Academy Theatre, Birdwell. They have a variety of backgrounds and most of them have no experience of singing or dancing. Among those pulling on a pair of tights will be a teacher, a builder, and a backstage technician who will appear on the other side of the curtain for the first time. The show’s director Lee Semley said: “There are a few of the lads that I didn’t expect to come forward – or their wives to let them. “They have been in training for

Dragged onto stage: Karl Allott who plays Dolly Diva in the production at Birdwell. two months with a choreographer and professional drag queen. “It was a bit of a shock for them to start with. “The drag queen came in to teach them how to strut in heels, shake their hips and pout. “There were a few bowlegged walks in the first couple of weeks. “The lads thought it was a bit of

a laugh at first but then got really into it and became determined to do well. We cast four female dancers who are of a similar height to the boys and it is the audience’s job to figure out who’s who and what’s what before the wigs come off at the end.” Lee says he wouldn’t have been able to assemble a cast big enough to put on the show ten

years ago. “The number of lads interested in being in the production shows how society has changed, which is quite relevant because the story of the musical is about a gay family hiding what they are until they realise they should be proud.” The show opens on February 8 and runs until February 12, with performances from 7.30pm.

Ashley Jackson helps raise cash BY SAM LAWRENCE BARNSLEY Metrodome is to host an evening with Ashley Jackson aimed at raising funds for a carers’ garden. The artist will paint a water-colour landscape throughout the evening and also give anecdotes about his time growing up in Barnsley. The garden project offers respite away from caring for those who look after relatives or friends needing support. Money raised will help buy a poly tunnel so that carers can still work on the garden during winter. The fund-raiser will be held on February 24 from 7pm. For tickets call the Metrodome on 730060.

‘TOWN SHOULD BUILD TOURISM’ BARNSLEY’S economic future is bleak because of a culture of dependency and a lack of aspiration, a council report claims. To boost commerce the authors say the town should concentrate on developing a stronger identity so it can exploit tourism opportunities. The report states the borough is still suffering from the decline of traditional industries which have moved overseas. It says too many of the workingage population are a drain on the public purse and are sucked into a ‘downward spiral of dependency’, while too many in work are in lowskilled jobs. “‘Skills poverty’ has wide-ranging implications, from entry level jobs through to management and leadership positions,” it states. “It is critical that education and training institutions focus on connecting local people to job opportunities, through a combination of vocational and work-based training and more traditional economic routes.” Government funding cuts will set Barnsley back, according to the authors. Coun Tim Cheetham believes that

Criticism: Coun Bill Gaunt. will be more detrimental than anything. He said: “It is a pretty bleak picture when you look at how much money is going to be dragged out of the local economy. “Withdrawing public sector funding is not going to help the commercial economy because the amount we spend, as a council, in the private sector is enormous.” To change its fortunes the report says Barnsley needs to take advantage of its location, develop a ‘diversified economy’ and support small

businesses. It says the borough should also take advantage of its ‘excellent’ location. “Barnsley has good access to attractive countryside and the exceptional natural environment of the Peak District, providing potential for the development of cultural tourism and leisure business activity.” Coun Bill Gaunt, of the opposition independent group, said Barnsley’s economy was failing because of poor planning. “There has been a lack of forethought. The council has solved a problem as it comes up. That’s a major problem itself.” While making Barnsley a ‘green and pleasant’ place to live was welcome the focus should have been on job creation, he said. The local economic assessment will be used to update the Remaking Barnsley plans for ‘challenging times’. Council chief executive Phil Coppard said it was important the evidence was used to create a realistic development plan for the borough.

Grant helps dancing on ice A YOUNG ice skater has been awarded £400 by the Dickie Bird Foundation. Elise Nicole Gough, nine, of Bentley Close, Monk Bretton, has spent the money on ice skates and clothing to see her through various competitions. She has already picked up numerous trophies and spends about eight hours every week training at Sheffield. She has sport in her family – her uncle is former Yorkshire and England cricketer Darren Gough. Dickie Bird set up his foundation in 2004 to help young people ‘fulfil their sporting dreams’. He says he can remember how difficult it was to afford luxuries like football boots and cricket boots. He said: “Of all the things I achieved in my career, it is the opportunity to give something back through my foundation that gives me the greatest pleasure. “I want children to enjoy sport, and not spend all their time on street corners or looking at computers.”

Jo, who is in her fifth season with Pontins, said the routine was based on a musicals theme. She said being told she couldn’t do it made her determined to carry on with her dancing. “I wanted to prove a point,” she said.

Injured teen speaks after weeks in coma BY KATE PICKLES A YOUNG dad who spent weeks in a coma after being knocked over by a car has spoken his first words since the accident. Brett Sinton, of Priory Road, Lundwood, said ‘hello mum’ when she visited him at Barnsley Hospital. The 19-year-old suffered severe head injuries when he was knocked over by a car as he crossed Pontefract Road on November 18. He needed emergency surgery to reduce pressure on his brain.

Mum June Barraclough, 50, said Brett was able to whisper the words once a tracheostomy tube had been removed. “The nurses said ‘have you said hello to your mum yet’ and all of a sudden he took a deep breath and said it,” she said. “When he spoke I had tears in my eyes. I put my arms around him and said I was proud of him. It doesn’t matter how old he gets, I’ll still tell him when he’s done well.” Brett’s recovery is even more special after his 14-year-old brother, Jamie, died in similar circumstances when he was knocked over in Barnsley in 1996. Doctors initially thought

Brett might not pull through but he battled to regain consciousness, come off his ventilator and has started talking. He had a brain scan last week which showed there was no damage to the top of his spine. The father-of-two to two-month-old Alisha and Dylan, four, has now been moved to the Keresforth Centre to start rehabilitation. “It’s goodbye to 2010 and hello to 2011,” said June, 50. “We know we’re looking at six months at Keresforth but who knows if he continues to shock us. He’s amazed the doctors and nurses up until now.”

Group support for arthritis BY MIKE COTTON TWO women with arthritis have started a support group for people of all ages living with the condition. Judith Oxley, 44, of Monk Bretton, and Louise Short, 36, of Royston, both say they would have found it very helpful if there had been such a group when they were diagnosed. Judith said: “It really is awful when you’re first diagnosed, because your friends and family are there for you but they don’t know anything about what it’s like.” Louise said: “It would have been really great for me if there’d been something like this, somewhere to meet and talk to people in the same position as you.” Arthritis Care, Barnsley and District Branch, meets on the first Wednesday of the month at Silverdale Community Centre,

Retiring gymnast tumbles into second place at championships

BY KATE PICKLES A GYMNAST who trained with a broken hand has won silver at the World Championships.

Everyone was waiting for the score. It took a few minutes to come up and when it did I couldn’t believe it. I started crying

Jennie Miller, 25, of Cranston Close, Monk Bretton, was in the medals at the competition in Poland. The former Priory pupil performed three routines to reach the final eight as part of Great Britain’s senior women’s trio before coming second in the final. “It was amazing, we didn’t expect to do that well,” said Jennie. “We were last on so it all depended on how well we did but we did the best routine we had ever done. Everyone was waiting for the score to come through to see if they were still in the medals. “It took a few minutes to come up and when it did I couldn’t believe it. I started crying.” The achievement was all the more poignant for Jennie as it was her last international competition. Now she plans to take a holiday then move back to Barnsley and resume her coaching career. “It was emotional as I knew it was my last competition and I am really glad to have finished on a high. “It has taken a while to sink in and feels weird not going training every day.”

Valentine’s Special

advertisingfeature

LET YOUR LOVE BLOSSOM IT’S a day loved by some and loathed by others and it’s almost here again. Valentine’s Day is the one time of the year when we can show our loved ones just how much they mean to us, or seize the opportunity to confess our feelings to someone we have admired from afar. Traditionally love notes were exchanged between lovers on February 14, but today most choose to express their feeling in a card, whether it’s bought from a shop for its soppy verse and cute picture or lovingly handmade with a special, individual message inside. Most find buying the card the easy bit, it’s choosing a gift to accompany it that proves more challenging. While some couples agree to just exchange token gifts such as flowers and chocolates, others go all out on a gift that their partner will love just as much as they love them. For those going down the token gift route, it still pays to put a little thought into what you’re buying. As romantic as a single long-stemmed red rose is, it’s worth doing a bit of research to find out what your partner’s favourite blooms are and surprising her with a beautiful bunch she won’t forget. Equally if you choose chocolates, don’t just grab a box while you’re in the petrol station, instead find a local chocolatier

and pick out some handmade treats. Branching out further, there is the option of clothes, lingerie, jewellery, perfume and aftershave. All fairly straightforward options but don’t just pick the first thing you see, surprise your partner with something you know they really want. Think back, have they dropped any hints when a certain television advert has been on, pointed something out in a shop window or circled something in a magazine. The recipient will be thrilled with the gift and even more thrilled that you took notice of what they said. But what do you buy for the girl or guy that has it all – a romantic break for two. For those who love countryside there is nothing like a weekend stay in a peaceful rural cottage, meanwhile those who prefer the more cosmopolitan lifestyle will appreciate a sophisticated city break, whether it’s in this country or abroad. Other options include luxurious hotel spa breaks, ideal for those who need a little rest and relaxation, or at the other end of the scale, adventure weekends in the great outdoors filled with action packed activities. If you can’t afford a weekend away, fear not, a meal out at your partner’s favourite restaurant or a posh breakfast served in bed should still have the desired effect.

If you would like to advertise in any of our upcoming features contact the sales team on Barnsley 734666 BOATMAN’S REST Edmunds Road, Worsbrough Dale, Barnsley. Telephone 286620.

Bound for the Bridge: Barnsley FC under-18s.

Picture: Keith Turner.

UNDER-18S TO PLAY CHELSEA BARNSLEY FC under-18s will make an exciting trip to Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge in the FA Youth Cup this month. The young Reds have been drawn against the Chelsea youth team, who are the cup holders, in the fifth round of the competition. “The lads are very excited to be going to Chelsea and we are looking forward to it,” said Academy manager Ronnie Branson. “We know they have a lot of very good young players but so do we and we will be going there looking to cause an upset.” Barnsley booked their place in the fifth

round with a 4-0 victory over Rushden and Diamonds at Oakwell on Wednesday. A stunning strike from Reuben Noble-Lazarus, Matthew Steade’s first goal at that level and a double from top scorer Danny Rose did the damage. The Reds will travel to Chelsea knowing they have already beaten high-profile opposition in Tottenham Hotspur who lost 3-1 at Oakwell in the third round before Christmas. Danny Rose, Jordan Clark and Bradley Riley scored the goals. The date of the Chelsea match will be announced on the Chronicle website this week.

Coaches make grade A GROUP of karate coaches who have more than 50 years between them into teaching children in Barnsley went up grades last weekend. Fourth dans went to Dave Holmes and Tony Saunders of the Barnsley Karate Centre as well as Graham Summerfield of Anshin Karate Club and Gary Baker who runs Chapeltown Karate Club. Alan Kennedy, who assists at Chapeltown, picked up his third dan. All the candidates were assessed by chief instructors Ged and John Tumman.
