Tom Fryers took on the Wainwright Peaks challenge to raise money for Sheffield Royal Hallamshire hospital where staff saved his life as a baby. He was born by emergency Caesarean after doctors told mum Helen they could barely find his heartbeat. Tom, of Bower Hill, Oxspring, survived but had to be monitored for the first year of his life. Helen said: “When he was old enough to understand that he could have died, Tom wanted to do something to thank the staff. There are so many newborns with health issues and Tom wants to make sure they can be saved.” The challenge took him three years, 480 miles and 150,000 feet of climbing to finish but has earned him the honour, part of the Woman’s Own Children of Courage awards. He is one of the youngest people ever to complete the challenge and will receive his award on December 9 at a ceremony at Westminster Abbey and be guest of honour at a special reception at the House of Lords.

PRIMARY SCHOOL GETS TOPS MARKS BY KATE PICKLES A PRIMARY school has has gone from satisfactory to outstanding, according to education watchdogs. St John the Baptist Church School in Dodworth rec-
eived top marks in an Ofsted inspection this month compared to the average ratings they received eight years ago. They had improved to a ‘good’ grade in 2005 but headteacher Ian Goddard said he was delighted to
score excellent after the latest inspection. “It has been a real team effort,” he said. “Everyone has worked hard towards a shared goal and it is good to see all the hard work paying off. Everything that the school
does is done to create the best opportunities for all children within school.” The report said the school provided a vibrant and caring environment and pupils were polite and considerate and the learning environment was happy, calm and
orderly. It said early years children got an excellent start and make rapid progress and children of all ages felt safe in the school. “The headteacher and strong leadership team set high expectations and are relentless in the quest to
ensure all pupils reach their full potential,” it said. “All groups of pupils make good progress because they receive good quality teaching and the strong nurturing environment helps them develop very positive attitudes to learning.”

Age concern make office move A LEADING charity for the elderly has moved to a ‘more appropriate’ location after customers called for better access. The Age Concern office has been based on the first and second floor of offices on Eldon Street, Barnsley for 25 years. But visitors to the advice, information and insur-

ance offices have often complained about having to walk up two flights of stairs. Chief Executive Phil Wormald, said: “We have said for some time that we must find a more appropriate venue as the Eldon Street offices were not suitable for older visitors.”
A big hit at contest: Terry Everson.
A KARATE leader from Royston has been awarded one of the martial art’s highest honours. Terry Everson, of Skye Croft, Royston, was awarded the ‘6th Dan’ at a Karate competition in Athersley on Sunday. It is six levels higher than the ‘black belt’. He runs the Shukokai Karate Club at Royston High School on Mondays and Thursdays, and at Wath Comprehensive on Wednesdays and Fridays. It’s part of the Barnsley Shindo kai Association. Terry said: “It’s an honour — it’s been a lot of years coming.” He’s been training for 36 Picture: Scott Bairstow years.
DEE FIGHTS TO PROTECT HONEY BEES BY MIKE COTTON A BUSY bee-keeper is taking up the fight to help bees which have set up home in the town centre. The tawny mining bees nest in the disused burial ground at Churchfields in the town centre and bee-keeper Dee Jones, of Old Town, is calling for them to be protected. The harmless bees dig tiny holes in the soil to access their nests. Mowing the grass flattens the entrances to the nests so the bees can’t get in to store food for their developing young inside. Dee has asked the council to delay mowing there each year until the end of April. By this time, the adults have left enough food for their young and they fly away leaving them on their own inside the sealed nest to hatch the following spring. But the council has told her it’s not possible because it is a ‘high-profile’ site and there would be complaints if it was left overgrown. Dee said: “Yes, they are surviving there at the moment, but in far fewer numbers than when I first saw them a few years ago. If we keep flattening their nests they might not come back. I just think once we know they are there, we shouldn’t discourage them. It’s not as if not mowing the grass until the end of April would result in wilderness.” Independent Coun Peter Middleton, a professional ecologist, supports Dee. He said: “I can see what the council’s saying. We don’t want overgrown areas in the town centre. Maybe there could be a sign telling people the bees are nesting there and the grass is left to grow until the end of April. They are not rare, but it’s well-established that bees are decreasing in numbers. If there are no bees, there’s no humans. They are such an important pollinator. If they go, we all go.”
SKYLINE WILL BE PROTECTED FROM TALL STOREYS BY MIKE COTTON BARNSLEY’S ‘cherished skyline’ is to protected by new guidelines which control where high buildings can be built. One of the main aims of the strategy, the result of a £14,400 study by Gillespies’ designers, is to ensure new developments don’t limit certain ‘views’ including those where the town hall can be seen. The report defines ‘tall buildings’ as: “Buildings or structures that are significantly taller than those around them and/or which will noticeably change the skyline.”
Independent Coun Bill Gaunt said: “I think to start talking about a ‘cherished skyline’ might be a bit over the top. But I’m sympathetic to the idea of controlling development in the town centre. “In Barnsley in the past we have had development which has not fitted in with what’s around it. “The council put up some pretty grim buildings and then insisted that other people’s private developments fit in. So we do need control, but the last thing we need is regulation approaching ‘red tape’ standards which is going to stop people developing in the town centre.
“We need development coming in.” Coun Bill Newman, cabinet member for development, said the strategy would encourage developers rather than put them off through ‘red tape’. He said: “It gives developers some idea, sort of like a preplanning process. “We’re not against people coming in with their own ideas, but it’s just another tool in our planners’ tool box. Of course we want development, but we want to preserve the contours of the town and some of its iconic views.” The study was funded by Yorkshire Forward and the Regional Development Agency.
Hard at work: Barnsley Sea Cadets Warrick Wagstaff and Joe Walker in the kitchen.
Sea cadets need help to make their headquarters shipshape BY MIKE COTTON
Political party sets up Barnsley branch THE English Democrats Party is to launch a Barnsley branch tomorrow. Bernard Partington is organising the meeting at The Silkstone, Park Road, Barnsley. One of its members, Peter Davies, was elected Mayor of Doncaster in June. He said he
would cut political correctness, abandon the annual Gay Pride Festival and stop town twinning to reduce council expenditure. Mayor Davies also cut his salary from £73,000 to £30,000. Mr Partington, of The Hollins, Gilroyd, became a party member after the Doncaster success.
BARNSLEY Sea Cadets need a new galley and major work to the toilets. The old kitchen units were ripped out due to safety regulations and the toilets need modernisation. The crew are now looking for help at their Racecommon Road HQ, whether it’s donations of goods, skills, labour, or sponsorship. One of the leaders, Caroline Devonport,
The party’s website says it ‘puts England first’. Its main policies are to end mass immigration, abolish political correctness, promote the English way of life not multiculturalism and withdraw from the European Union. The meeting starts at 7.30pm.
said: “It was someone’s old kitchen that had been refitted, but it had been in our building at least ten years. It was rotten and falling apart. “We used it to cater for events but also to teach the kids kitchen skills and hygiene. You can’t really teach them how to keep a kitchen clean when it’s dropping to pieces. “It was OK for showing them bad examples but not so good for showing them how it should be.” Contact number: 295531.

Fly your flag for soldiers’ return READERS can join in the flag waving to welcome home the Light Dragoons by buying a Chronicle outside WH Smith on Friday from 8.30am to 11.30am. Mayor Coun John Parkinson wants Barnsley to come to a standstill and celebrate the regiment’s return from Afghanistan with a homecoming parade on Monday. The Chronicle is showing its support to the cause by giving away a free union flag with every paper sold on Cheapside. More than 200 soldiers will march through the town before receiving the Freedom of the Borough in recognition of their heroic services to the community. “It will be a big celebration to show how proud the people of Barnsley are of their troops,” said the Mayor.
“The feedback I have had from schools and businesses so far has been excellent so we are expecting a big turnout. “I think with this parade coming on the back of Remembrance Day it makes it that bit more poignant, but this is a celebration and that’s the big difference.” Freedom of Borough is the highest civic honour and was originally performed in Barnsley 1979 for the 13/18 Hussars before they merged with 15/19 Kings Royal Hussars to become the Light Dragoons. The regiment is stationed in Norfolk but recruits in Yorkshire and the North East so a large number of soldiers are from Barnsley. The soldiers will be joined by the Band of the Light Cavalry and accompanied by military vehicles during the 40minute procession.
ACE AZEEM BACK WITH HOME SIDE
Gymnasts to take the floor BARNSLEY Gymnastics Club has installed a new floor worth almost £20,000 as it hopes to make the town the home of Yorkshire gymnastics. The club, which is run by volunteers, was founded in 2006 due to the lack of provisions for the sport in Barnsley and has been extremely successful. It boasts more than 350 members, won Club of the Year at the Barnsley Sports Awards last year and a whole host of medals at the Yorkshire Championships and hopes to have a national champion within three years. The non-profit organisation provides
Gymnasts on the new floor. pre-school gymnastics for children from 14 months to 18 years as well as tumbling, freestyle gymnastics, adult gymnastics and cheerleading lessons. Until now Barnsley gymnasts had only been entering tumbling competitions, but the new floor, worth £19,900, means they can train to enter a wider variety of events such as artistic gymnastics.

Roads will be closed as the parade sets off from Churchfield at 12.15pm, and will march down Church Lane and onto Church Street before standing to attention outside the town hall. It will move down Market Hill, into Queen Street, Cheapside, New Street, Island Corner, Wellington Street and Peel Square, eventually returning to the town hall for a civic reception. Barnsley FC has offered to house the soldiers for the night in its academy as the players have been given the next day off. “We thought we might have a bit of a problem with hundreds of soldiers needing somewhere to stay. “One phone call was it all it took to Barnsley FC who immediately sorted it out. It just shows what a big part of the community the football club is. We are very grateful to them.”

AZEEM Rafiq will play for Barnsley CC next season as the squad undergoes a reshuffle. Joining the England under 19 player at Shaw Lane will be his Yorkshire Academy team-mate Zimababwean Gary Balance. Meanwhile, Barnsley bowler and county Academy star Oliver Hannon-Dalby has extended his contract with Yorkshire until 2012. Three players have left the club. Alex Morris has joined Hoylandswaine while Joe Ellis and Greig Batty have also departed. Prodigy Rafiq says choosing to return to Shaw Lane after graduating from the Yorkshire Academy was an ‘easy decision’. The 18-year-old Barnsley lad came through the club’s youth system before playing the last two seasons for White Rose County youth team in the same league as his home town team. Rafiq will remain with the White Rose County as he tries to break into their first team but will play for Barnsley when they not involved with the Headlingley side. Rafiq is now too old for the academy so had to choose a league club to represent and says he was never going to go anywhere other than Barnsley. The all-rounder said: “Coming back to play for Barnsley in the upcoming season was a very easy decision to make. “The club have supported me so much and taught me so many things and it will
Azeem Rafiq. (S) be really nice to play for them in the Yorkshire League this season. “They are my hometown club and have been a big part of my life. I always want the club to do well and hopefully I will help them this season like they helped me in the past.” But Rafiq says he hopes his appearances for the Shaw Laners will not be too frequent as he is desperate to be playing regularly at county level. “I have to admit that I hope I won’t be playing too much for Barnsley because I would really like to break into the Yorkshire first team this season and be appearing for them every
week. It is a big year for me and hopefully I can establish myself.” Rafiq has played four first class matches for Yorkshire so far. He made his name with the bat when he hit a century against Worcestershire last June and has also taken ten wickets with a best of three for 34. Next year will be a big one on the international scene for Rafiq, who has been named in the squad for the World Cup in New Zealand this January. He said: “I am really excited about the World Cup. “It is going to be great and I think we have as
good a chance as anyone. “There is no reason why England can’t win the competition.” The former captain of the England under 15 and under 16 sides has his eye on skippering the side at the tournament. He said: “The captaincy is yet to be announced and I would really like to get it. But either way I will be pleased to be out there.” England are ranked fifth in the world at that age group but have just returned from a tour of Bangladesh in which they were beaten 5-2 in a oneday series that Rafiq said was a ‘tough but a good experience’.
