HOLGATE AND GARAGE TO MAKE WAY FOR £35M SCHOOL BY MIKE COTTON HOLGATE school and the Shell petrol station on Dodworth Road will be demolished to make way for a £35m school under plans approved by the council. The 2,200-pupil Advanced Learning Centre which will replace Holgate and Kingstone schools was given outline planning permission last week. It involves the demolition of the Shell petrol station which is on land which used to belong to clothing firm S R Gent. The land is in the hands of PricewaterhouseCoopers which acted as the receivers when the factory closed. The council says it will try to buy the site either through negotiation or a compulsory purchase order (CPO). A public footpath through the site needs to be diverted, however it will still have an access onto Branksome
Avenue. Coun Brian Perrin said: “It’s going to cause no end of traffic problems for residents, because you’ll get parents dropping their kids off there. It’s only outline planning permission, so when the detail is sorted, I want that blocking off, or a solution that’s going to stop traffic problems for residents.” The council says the new school will have ‘state of the art facilities to give pupils the best opportunities to learn’. Local businesses and suppliers will be used for the project. It is part of the £1bn scheme to rebuild all secondary schools in Barnsley. Five schemes are already under construction. The Kingstone and Holgate replacement is in the last phase of works to be completed by 2013. Another £35m school to replace Wombwell High School and Darfield Foulstone School was also approved.
Conservatory plan PLANNING applications submitted to the council: Keith Mills, for demolition of conservatory and erection of a rear conservatory and extension to 15 Lynwood Drive, Carlton; Lee Rhodes, demolition of former CEAG building in the town centre and formation of a pay and display car park; Adrian Hillman, Azure Developments, Worcester, demolition of single-storey extension and detached garage and erection of 2.5-storey side and rear extension and detatched double garage at 18 Longman Road, Barnsley; Tim Ladlow and Ian Collins, a storage building on land adjacent to 4 The Walk, Birdwell; Alan Good, two-storey rear extension to 429 Rotherham Road, Smithies; Miss J Beet and Mr D Thompson, certificate of lawfulness for use of land to form extension to domestic cutilage at 4 Railway Cottages, Gilroyd Lane, Dodworth; Nick Philips of Barnsley NHS PCT, a single-storey extension and internal alterations to substance misuse unit at Kendray Hospital, Doncaster Road; Peel South East, improved access and service road, car park and associated works at the The Peel Centre retail park, Harborough Hill Road.
ALERT OVER CUT PRICE WILL FIRMS “Some people think writing a will is just a form you can fill in and it’s all sorted. But it isn’t. “It’s important it is done
BY MIKE COTTON BARNSLEY is being targeted by cut-price firms who say they can write wills cheaper than solicitors, the Barnsley Law Society has warned.
MP lends support to horse racing BARNSLEY MP Jeff Ennis hosted a reception in Parliament to support horse racing’s importance to the British economy. Jeff, chairman of the All Party Racing and Bloodstock Group, said it was to promote the launch of a report on the subject, by the
British Horseracing Authority and Business in the Community. He said: “Racing in Britain is the best in the world and is extremely important to the rural economy, the leisure industry and on the high street. “Altogether more than 100,000
people are employed as a direct consequence of racing.” The event was hosted by TV celebrity Clare Balding and was attended by more than 60 MPs and lords.
cause no end of problems, particularly for the relatives left behind.
DOUBLE GLAZING PROBLEMS?
Cassie Worton, secretary of the society, said the unregulated, unqualified and uninsured firms have been responsible for ‘wills which are shoddy, badlywritten and not legallybinding where relatives have had to bring in solicitors to sort out the mess’. She said: “Sadly, nobody realises you’ve made a mistake until you’re dead. It’s your relatives who are left to pick up the pieces.” Mrs Worton, a practising solicitor, said the recession had led to more firms setting up looking to make a ‘quick buck’ and to more people looking to save money. She said most reputable law firms should be able to do a basic will for £75 to £95. She said: “Yes, that is more than these will writers might charge but if it’s much less than £75 I think you need to seriously question what you are getting.

SMALL BUILDERS GO TO WORK ON DICKIE STATUE BY ADAM CIVICO IT’S the little things in life that make you smile... And these teeny builders ‘working’ on the Dickie Bird statue certainly do. Darfield snapper Mark Dobson took the pictures as part of a world-wide internet project called ‘Little Builders’ World Tour 2009’. The mini-figures had already visited Sydney Harbour, the Colosseum in Rome and the Greenham Common nuclear base. And now they can tick Barnsley off their list of places to visit.
Mark, 44, of Coronation Street, is a carer for his wife but is also studying photography at Barnsley College. He said: “You have them until the following weekend. “I chose the Dickie Bird statue because it’s the latest landmark of Barnsley and I could use my imagination. “I was there at 7.30am and got a couple of funny looks. I feel pretty humble and amazed that I managed to get chosen to take part. I just hope Dickie does not mind.” Mark has now sent the models to the next photographer.
Men at work: Barnsley College photography student Mark Dobson, 44, took these pictures as part of a project called ‘Little Builders’ World Tour 2009’.

Research by the Office for National Statistics shows that 25 people in Barnsley died last year as they were unable to heat their homes properly. Fuel poverty is when heating and cooking costs over ten per cent of a household’s income. Public health consultant Megan Ward said it was vital for people to be able to keep their homes warm. “Many people struggle to keep their homes warm due to lots of reasons,” she said. “Some of it is caused by of the expense of heating or by poor insulation. “As we are approaching the coldest months of the year, living in a cold, damp home can impact on a person’s health.
“It can reduce mobility, make respiratory illnesses and arthritis worse, or can even cause infections that lead to death.” There were 123 ‘excess winter deaths’ where more people died over the four winter months than the rest of the year. Most of these were caused by outside temperatures but an estimated 25 were from cold homes. NHS Barnsley and the council want to raise awareness of the problem with an estimated 16,625 homes considered to be in fuel poverty. Promotional leaflets will be distributed to pharmacies across Barnsley this month with details on what to do if you think you are one of those affected and the grants and schemes available. For details call the energy and sustainability advice centre on 0800 028 1067.

ONE saved the life of Lord Mason, another stopped his colleague from being strangled and another saved the life of a man who had been stabbed.
These are Barnsley’s best bobbies and they were recognised for their efforts at an awards ceremony at the town hall on November 18. PC Lynne Bates from the tutor unit won the Royal Humane Society award after being among officers called to Lord Mason’s home where they found him not breathing. They revived him and he made a full recovery.Receiving District Commander’s commendations were PC Angela Sheldon and Andrew Bradshaw from Wombwell E group. They had attended a domestic incident where a man was being aggressive and
violent. He tried to strangle PC Sheldon and PC Bradshaw had to remove his hands from around her neck. Chief Supt Andy Brooke said they ‘showed tremendous bravery and courage’. Fellow Wombwell officer PC Kevin Morris found a semi-conscious man with a stab wound to his leg and losing a lot of blood. His first aid saved the man’s life. DAISY’S POPULARITY BALLOONS BY GAEL STIGANT BRITAIN’S Got Talent hopeful Claire Lucas has stepped up her efforts to wow judges at her audition for the ITV show next Saturday. The 33-year-old will take to the stage in a pair of frilly knickers and a Barnsley FC shirt to ensure she stands out. Claire has been rehearsing with her team of 28 children and Daisy
the dog every evening at the Silkstone pub to make sure the Crazy Daisy fun fitness routine is spot-on. “They’re all special, talented children and I’m so proud of them all,” said Claire, of Beaumont Avenue, Broadway. “They’re all picking it up so quickly.” The original idea for the act was dreamed up by seven-year-old Jack Matthews.
It involves the children splitting into groups and doing cheerleading, football skills, disco dancing and hula-hooping. Meanwhile, Claire dances around and Daisy the dog dribbles a football and does keepie-uppies with a balloon to music. Claire still needs sponsorship to fund the coach that will take the team to the audition. If you can help, call her on 07951 953268.

MUSLIM BURIAL AREA PLAN DIES BY TIM ARNOTT PLANS for a Muslim burial ground within Dodworth Cemetery have been abandoned because the land is not suitable. Council workers dug some test ‘graves’ but the land was
found to be susceptible to waterlogging and collapse. To meet the standard for burial, land has to be firm enough for staff and the bereaved to stand near the edge of a grave without it collapsing. But the test holes collapsed and filled with water.
‘Unfortunately tests have shown it’s just not suitable’ Coun Roy Miller said: “We need to cater for all groups of all religious or other beliefs. “We had been looking to find
land suitable for Muslim burials and thought we had found a site in Dodworth that had some potential.
“Unfortunately tests have shown it’s just not suitable.” The land in question was part of Dodworth Cemetery which is near to, but not part of, Dodworth St John’s Church. A petition had been started by residents opposed to the
plan, but the Rev Stephen Race said he had no problem with it. The council will now have to find an alternative site. It already has burial grounds for other faiths at Cudworth and an area for green burials at Penistone.

CHANGES TO THE PEEL CENTRE PLAN PLANS for alterations to the entrances and exits at the Peel Centre retail park on Harborough Hill Road were submitted to the council last week. The plans are to create separate entrances and exits for cars and delivery vehicles. There is a service road to delivery areas behind all the shops but the road comes between Halfords and Focus DIY. The plan is to divert this road behind Halfords to emerge separately on Harborough Hill Road. This was included in plans submitted a year ago but the council refused it because councillors and planners were concerned about slow moving lorries emerging onto the dual carriageway in front of cars accelerating away from the traffic lights
down hill. The original plan also included building two new retail units between Halfords and Focus over what is now the service road. The new plans don’t include the buildings, although it is not known if plans for the buildings will be resubmitted in future. The scheme features ‘improved’ engineering to the entrance, including a ‘merge lane’ for lorries pulling in, and a ‘taper’ for lorries coming out which will reduce the risk of vehicles being stationary or moving very slowly on Harborough Hill. The developer says this will improve safety by separating HGVs from any pedestrians in the retail park.
Planning applications THE following planning applications were submitted to Barnsley Council for consideration last week: Mr Tom Horsfall, of Tomahawk Group, Great Victoria, Bridge Street, Bradford, West Yorkshire, part demolition and rebuild and part conversion of existing saw mill into seven flats and 12 houses with amenity space, integral garages and associated parking at The Saw Mill, The Green, Penistone; Ms Dennise Ball, Cliffe Kennels, Barnsley Road, Hoylandswaine, erection of a 15m domestic wind turbine (resubmission) at land adjacent to Cliffe Kennels on Barnsley Road; Mr R Fisher, c/o 47 Brocklehurst Avenue, Stairfoot, erection of a single storey side extension and modifications to windows to semi detached house previously approved under application 2009/0793 at plot B, 32 Staincross Common, Staincross; Mr S Perry, c/o Chris Carr Associates, 6A Eastgate, conversion of existing attached

If you have agreed to keep the budget fairly low clothes are always a good option – but it’s important to know their likes and dislikes. Avoid Bridget Jones style reindeer jumpers at all costs and instead consider a cashmere jumper, perfect for the cold winter weather. Another alternative could be a new shirt for the party season over the Christmas and New Year. Meanwhile there are plenty of stylish hats, scarfs and gloves in the shops which are always greatly appreciated during the cold months, as is cosy nightwear. For those with a bigger budget, experience days are a great gift for men. From rally experiences, to hot air balloon rides, there are plenty to choose from and it’s unlikely such a gift would be duplicated under the tree. Technology and gadgets are also very popular with men. Digital cameras, DAB

radios and iPods will never go unappreciated, but the ultimate gift at the high end of the budget has to be a games console, such as the Nintendo Wii or X-Box 360. This is one gift guaranteed to make you the best wife/girlfriend in the world but you risk not seeing your
partner for the entire festive period and beyond. Ladies on the other hand are easy to buy for with the present possibilities being pretty much endless. It’s a well known fact that women can never have too many clothes, shoes or bags so these are straight forward options.
Underwear and nightwear are also popular pressies but men should try to research their partner’s size before rushing out to the shops to avoid embarrassment. Lotions, potions, anything that smells good or promises to make women ten years younger will also go
down well. From perfumes and body scrubs to bath oils and night creams, ladies love them all. Creeping up the budget, experience days are equally popular with women. Ladies who like to be pampered will appreciate a spa day while adrenaline junkies may prefer a tandem skydive. And at the top end of the budget we have a girl’s best friend – diamonds. Whether they are in the form of a bracelet, necklace or even an engagement ring, diamonds are guaranteed to put a smile on your partner’s face on Christmas morning.

Are you a fake fir fanatic? ONE activity the whole family looks forward to during the festive season is picking out a Christmas tree. For some there is nothing better than the smell and appearance of a real fir tree, hand-picked to touch the ceiling and fill the room with its big bushy branches. However, others like to avoid the mess of a real Christmas tree by faking it – and for those wanting to take this route there are plenty of options. If you want a tree to decorate, it’s best to stick to tradition with a green artificial tree, which will project a festive image but won’t fall to pieces all over your floor. If you’re looking for something a little different, invest in a coloured artificial tree in silver, black, gold, cream or even pink. Another twist on tradition, is the reversible upside down Christmas tree, which can be tipped the modern way by standing it tip down. Modern alternatives include simple yet striking trees such as twig trees, which require minimal decorations, and coloured pre-lit Christmas trees, which require no decorations at all. And for anyone in need of a fast fix there are even prelit, pop-up trees, which can be stood glittering in your living room in a matter of seconds.
Simple and striking: A modern twig tree only needs minimal decorations. (S)

Stand out from the office crowd DECIDING what to wear to the work Christmas party can be a difficult decision for ladies who want to impress their colleagues. Work festivities are that one guaranteed time of the year when you can shed the mundane work attire and show there is more to you than formal shirts – so it’s important to get it right. One main factor to consider when selecting your outfit is does the look suit the occasion? For example, if you’re
going out for a relaxed Christmas lunch with colleagues, you won’t want to turn up in a little black dress and skyscraper heels – although you may look good, you will stand out for all the wrong reasons. Instead aim for a balance of casual and glamorous. This look can be achieved by wearing a flattering pair of jeans on the bottom-half, keeping things casual, and then adding some glamour on top with a sexy and sophisticated shirt, glitzy
top or a sequin jacket. In addition to sequins, another one of this season’s key looks is embellishing, which is perfect for adding some festive sparkle to daytime parties. Simple tops with detail on the shoulders or cardigans with embellishing down the front are good choices. If done right, the overall look will show-off your figure without going over the top. Meanwhile, for those in search of an evening outfit there is nothing better than a party dress to make you stand out from

the office crowd. If you want to flaunt your figure, 80s-style bodycon dresses are a top choice and also a key trend. Worn with high platforms this party attire is bound to attract work mates’ attention. For those who want to shine without wearing a figure-hugging number, sequin and animal print designs are a perfect solution. Simple shift dresses are a great choice for ladies opting for these designs. Wear with shoe boots or ankle boots to finish off the party look.

ADVERTISER’S ANNOUNCEMENT any years ago, a farmer put a concrete cow sculpture in his field as a light hearted joke – neighbours copied him, but in vibrant colours. Local artists used them as an art form. Eventually this spread to become the ‘Cow Parade’, where famous artists, designers and architects interpreted artwork into ‘Cow Parade’ art pieces which in turn we have turned into rug designs.

Why Cows? This is a popular question. Simply, the cow is a universally beloved animal. The cow represents different things to different people around the world-she's sacred, she's historical, she connects us to our past-but the common feeling is one of affection. There is something magical about the cow that transcends throughout the world. She simply makes everyone smile. As an art canvas, there is no other animal or object that provides the form, flexibility, and contiguous breadth of a cow. The three shapes (standing, grazing, reclining) provide artists with subtle, yet interesting angles and curves to create unique works of art. The basic cow form is also benign so that it can be altered, transformed, and morphed into completely other animals, people or objects. Incredibly, over 2500 hundred Cows have been created worldwide, but no two are alike.
And now, bringing CowParade to your town is Carpet Centre, Wombwell… Making designer rugs and sculptures affordable to you.

best over the Christmas period. While a simple trim will boost some ladies’ confidence, others will want a complete change. The two main styles for winter 2009 vary from one extreme to the other, pixie short crops or long, straight and sleek. For those just wanting a slight change a few highlights will boost locks, adding warmth and texture. Another option is to introduce a fringe, with the choice of either a subtle side-sweep or a browskimming blunt fringe. At the beauty salon facials and full body exfoliations are top of the list to hydrate skin and do away with dull, dry surface cells. Meanwhile, another beauty must for this time of year is a spray tan, especially if you’re planning on revealing those legs. The simple airbrushing treatment will ensure you have a natural, golden glow for up to seven days, giving you plenty of time to show it off. Finally little extras such as manicures and pedicures can also help to complete the body boost experience and even something as simple as a professional eyebrow shape can help transform your face, leaving you brimming with confidence this Christmas.

The cold, dark winter weather can make us feel like wrapping up from head to toe, but as the Christmas season starts to creep up, ladies want to look their best. A preChristmas detox can help to achieve this. Many ladies fear piling on the pounds over the festive period, but cutting back now can help you to lose a few pounds in time for the big day.
Try to swap sweet treats such as cakes, biscuits and chocolate for fruit, nuts and seeds and avoid fatty, fried foods that will make you feel bloated. Also try to cut down on alcohol, many don’t realise just how many calories are in a glass of wine or a cocktail. These simple steps will have you looking and feeling better in time for Christmas so you can indulge with your family and friends up to the new year without feeling guilty. A trip to the beauty salon and hairdresser is also key to helping you look your

VENISON FOR CHRISTMAS FROM ROUND GREEN FARM SHOP
Treat your four-legged friends WE all know pets are part of the family, so don’t leave them out at Christmas. Research shows that animal lovers enjoy treating their pets – 70 per cent of dog owners and 56 per cent of cat owners buy gifts for their four-legged friends. The present-giving session starts early on the 25th with stockings. While we expect small presents, tangerines, sweets and nuts, dogs and cats’ stockings come complete with fun toys and delicious snacks. Everyone eats lots of rich food at Christmas, but watch what you feed your
dog or cat or they could end up being sick. Giblets, stuffing, puddings, chocolate and cream can all make cats and dogs ill. Dogs enjoy chewing on a juicy bone, but make sure it is a big marrow bone so there is no danger of the dog swallowing it. Never give a dog or cat turkey bones – they splinter easily and could cause an animal to choke to death, not to mention what damage they can do to their stomach and intestines. And if you are going to feed your pet turkey meat, make sure it is white meat, not the dark as it’s too fatty.
Lots of supermarkets stock Christmas food for pets – pet puddings, packets of tasty treats and chews, not to mention turkey flavoured food. Make sure you pick up some animal crackers – full of bits and pieces which your canine and feline friends will find fun. Christmas pet safety tips: ■ After Christmas dinner, you
may want to settle down in front of the TV with a box of chocolates, but your dog will still need its regular exercise – so try to keep a little bit of routine to the day, for their sake. ■ Fat cats and dogs are unhappy and unhealthy so

avoid giving them any chocolate and ensure they get out. ■ Animals are naturally nosey and will play with anything they can find, so it is very important to be careful at Christmas. ■ Fallen decorations from the tree, small toys from crackers and burst balloons can be
dangerous to a curious pet, so clear them away. ■ If you know it is going to be noisy in your house, it may be better to keep your pets in a quiet room. ■ They could become confused by all the noise, but remember, don’t ignore them because they could get lonely.

THE TRADITIONAL FESTIVE TURKEY ONE thing everyone wants to get right at Christmas is the turkey. Beyond the stress of making sure you don’t poison your guests with undercooked meat is the pressure of ensuring that you don’t overcook the turkey either. The secret when roasting your Christmas turkey is to keep the breast meat moist while the darker leg meat, which takes longer to cook, finishes cooking. In order to achieve this follow the simple recipe below whilst remembering to baste well from time to time and to protect the meat with foil if it shows signs of becoming too brown. Ingredients ■ 1 oven-ready turkey ■ 25g butter ■ 2 medium onions, skinned and finely chopped ■ 225g fresh wholemeal breadcrumbs ■ Chopped fresh parsley ■ Finely grated rind of 2 lemons ■ Salt and pepper ■ 1 egg, beaten ■ Streaky bacon rashers Method To make the stuffing, melt the butter in a large saucepan, add the
onions, cover and cook gently for about ten minutes, until really soft, stirring occasionally. Remove from the heat and add the breadcrumbs, parsley and lemon rind. Season and stir in the egg. Wash the inside of the bird with boiling water and stuff at the neck end before folding the neck skin over. Make the turkey plump and as even in shape as possible, then truss it with the wings folded under the body and the legs tied together. Weigh the turkey and calculate the cooking time allowing 20 minutes per 450g plus 20 minutes. Place the turkey in a roasting tin, then sprinkle with salt and pepper. Cover the turkey breast with streaky bacon rashers to prevent it becoming dry. Roast at 180C (375F) Gas Mark 4, basting occasionally. Leave the turkey to rest for ten minutes, then carve thin slices of the breast meat by cutting down between the thigh and breast. Serve the roast turkey with the traditional accompaniment of thin gravy, bread sauce, small sausage and bacon rolls, roast seasonal vegetables and of course Tradition: The old Christmas favourite. brussel sprouts.

There are also special packs to encourage the gardeners of tomorrow – the children. To start them off there are a number of easy-to-grow vegetables available, which the children can not only grow – they will also enjoy eating them when they are ready. Some of the most popular include carrot, courgette, kohl rabi, lettuce and radish. Youngsters can learn about the value of nature and the environment by growing calendula, candytuft, clarkia, nasturtium and nigella, which all produce attractive flowers. And of course those old favourites – sunflower seeds.

As always there is a huge variety of gifts available for gardener and non-gardener alike. And while only the hardiest gardener will want to be out digging at this time of year, there are ideas suitable for indoors – or you could start to plan ahead for the warmer weather. Seasonal flowers such as the stunningly colourful polyanthus and primrose varieties can brighten up the house – and later be transferred to the garden to add a rainbow splash for spring. If you are looking for something different, what about giving a bowl of Autumn Crocus? Despite its common name, the Colochicum Waterlily is not related to the crocus at all. It is stunning when grown in a shallow container and requires no soil or water and will burst into bloom with spectacular pink waterlily-like flowers within weeks. When flowering has finished, the bulbs can be planted in the garden, so it’s an almost everlasting present. If you cannot find a perfect plant to give as a present, garden centres are full of ideas of things you can give now, but the recipient can enjoy later in the year. Many seed suppliers have special variety packs for different types and areas of garden – for experienced and beginner gardeners. With combinations of different sweet peas, hanging basket flowers, cottage garden plants, patio flowers, dried flow-

Escape to Egypt and just unwind IF you are looking for some pre-Christmas winter sun but don’t fancy travelling to the other side of the world, explore exotic Egypt. Egypt really is a country of deserts, but rising out of the sand, Cairo is a paradox – a city of pyramids and skyscrapers. There has been anxiety about attacks on tourists by extremists over the past few years, but in reality, Egypt is a safe country to visit as long as you do not stray off the wellworn tourist track. Undoubtedly, there is a lot to see in this ancient kingdom and the capital Cairo is the perfect base for seeing many of the treasures of one of the world’s earliest civilisations. On the outskirts of this great metropolis – home to 20 million people – you will find the Step Pyramid of Djoser, the world’s first
major stone structure, and the Pyramid of Teti. At Giza, the magnificent Sphinx sits guarding the 4,500-year-old Great Pyramid of Cheops, the last of the great Seven Wonders of the Ancient World still standing. If you visit them today, a ride on a local camel is a must – the resulting picture will be a treasured memory for years to come. If the sun gets too hot, a visit to the world-famous Egyptian Museum with its collection of mummies, sarcophagi and other artefacts, including the extraordinary treasures found in King Tutankhamun’s tomb, intended for his use in the afterlife. If you tire of visiting historical sites, Cairo offers an incredible selection of shopping, and night-life. If you want to go in search of a bargain, visit the famous Khan elKhalili souk, largely unchanged
since the 14th century, or one of the famous street markets, like Wekalet al-Balah, for fabrics, and the Tentmakers’ Bazaar. Although you probably will not want to buy, the Camel Market makes a fascinating trip. Cairo really comes alive at night, the best time to shop, eat delicious Middle Eastern cuisine, or simply watch the world go by from a cafe. If you want a special meal from Egypt’s kitchen try Kofta (ground meatballs), Mulukhia (green soup), Hamam Mahshi (stuffed pigeon) or Baba Ghannoug (tahini and eggplant) – it will be an experience you will never forget – just like your visit to Egypt.

Find pressies for your partner with our top tips the major pillars of creating intimacy in a relationship and an indicator of how good a partner you are across the long haul, therefore the gift you give should reflect how well you understand your partner and your relationship.” So, how can you make sure that the present you give your loved one this Christmas says the right things about you and your relationship? Here are some top tips on how to be a good gift-giver: n Plan – Don’t leave your Christmas shopping until the last minute. With some careful planning in plenty of time before Christmas Day, you’re more likely to be able find the perfect present, instead of grabbing the only thing you can find in the shop on Christmas Eve. Your last minute gift will look exactly that and will show a lack of thought. n Start paying attention – If you are tuned into your partner, you are more likely to give very good gifts. FINDING Christmas gifts for all your family and friends can be hard enough, but searching for the perfect gift for your partner can present added pressure. Not only do you want to find something that they will love, you want to find a gift which shows that you care and that you have thought really hard about what they might like. What does the gift you choose to give to your partner at Christmas say about you and your relationship? Dr Gian Gonzaga, relationship scientist for eHarmony.co.uk, believes that gift-giving in relationships relies on two elements. “The act of gift-giving in a relationship can be about showing-off and establishing yourself as someone who can provide,” says Dr Gonzaga. “Think about the male bird who brings worms to the female bird to prove they are a worthy mate. “Whatever you give as a gift is an indication of the qualities and staples that you can provide your loved one with. “However, the gift you actually give your partner can also mean so much more, when you pick the right gift it can show your partner how in tune you are with them and your relationship and signal that you understand what they like and want. “Understanding is one of

Barnsley Honda –
dedicated to first class service
BARNSLEY Honda is celebrating its best year yet after being ranked the third best branch nationally for customer satisfaction. The friendly team at the showroom in Barugh Green achieved the prestigious title this year after picking up all four Honda customer satisfaction awards in the northern region. The award, which is based on the results of customer surveys both in sales and after sales, reflects Barnsley Honda's ongoing commitment to its customers to
provide the best possible service. In addition, the dealership's successful year of trading has enabled it to expand its dedicated workforce, at a time when many companies are having to let staff go. Experienced technicians Craig Hart and Matthew Bruce have joined the workshop team, while Garry Scholey has taken up the

position of sales manager. To help improve customer satisfaction further, Helen Helsby has been appointed as after sales advisor. These new additions have increased the team at Barnsley Honda, allowing the dealership to develop new areas of the business. Sam Edwards has recently taken up the role of fleet sales manager after spending ten years developing working with Honda in the fleet market in West Yorkshire. This newly focused attention on business users has seen Barnsley Honda achieve a 200 per cent increase on fleet business sales over the past 12 months. Meanwhile, more customers have been flocking to the showroom to take advantage of Honda Barnsley's fantastic offers. As part of the dealership's 50/50 offer, customers can drive away the Honda Jazz, which is now being manufactured in the UK, paying just half now and leaving the remainder to be paid off next year. Motability customers can enjoy the benefit of no advance payments on the Jazz 1.2S. And in order to get the best possible deals, customers are being encouraged to visit the showroom now before the price increase in December and the VAT increase in January. The family-owned dealership was established by Honda enthusiast Tony Hargreaves, who began his career with the brand as an apprentice 25 years ago.
In gear: the Barnsley Honda showroom in Barugh Green. Its showroom, in Whaley Road, displays around 100 new and used cars and its workshop offers services, repairs and MOTs on all makes and models of vehicles. Tony said: "We have been here seven years now but this year has certainly been our best. "To be ranked the third best Honda dealership nationally for customer satisfaction is a great achievement for us and a great reflection on our hardworking staff. "I believe our success is due to a number of factors including our great offers, first class customer service and our expansion into business user vehicles.
"We hope to maintain and build upon these high standards as we move into the new year."
