Cor blimey, TV actress donates ‘family fortune’ SOAP star Katherine Kelly went back to her theatrical roots when she presented the Lamproom Theatre with a £30,000 ‘family fortune’. She hopes the sum will be used to help turn around the financial fortunes of the theatre and give other young actors and actresses their first break on stage. Katherine, 29, who plays Becky McDonald in Coronation Street, won the cash on TV game show Family Fortunes with the help of mum Anne, brother Chris, sister Grace and dad John, who is honorary president of the Lamproom. She handed the cheque to trustees of the theatre Mel Dyke, Roger Walton, Ian Hey, John Dennis and Ruth Dennis before enjoying a performance of her dad’s play, Sparkies. Katherine told the Chronicle she is still gobsmacked they managed to win because some of her family members had never seen the show before. “We filmed it in a day and my head was all over the place at the time because I

was rehearsing for Becky’s wedding. “We were terrible in rehearsals but somehow pulled it back. “I was in the car on the way home and still couldn’t believe that we’d managed to win it.” She chose the theatre as her charity to give something back to the youth side of the theatre which helped give the TV star her big break. “I’m patron of a few charities but because it was a family show and my dad was still the chair of the theatre at the time, and he was retiring, I thought it was fitting. “It’s great to know I can give something back to support the youth theatre groups.” Chair of the Lamproom, Mel Dyke, said she was thrilled to see Katherine make a valiant return to the Barnsley theatre. “It does give us a great boost and from what I know of Katherine, this is her way of saying thank you,” she added.

RETAIL PHASE OF CIVIC DEVELOPMENT TO START BOSSES at The Civic say improvements in the economy mean they can finally start working on the retail phase of the development. Other aspects of The Civic redevelopment like staging performances and hosting functions are well established. They are now concentrating on filling the 22,000-sq ft of retail space. The Civic is working with local estate

agents Smiths and Chris Rowland to market the area which covers three floors. It is anticipated the finished product will be similar to a department store or The Lanes at Meadowhall where different businesses have their own stalls in an open plan environment. Chief executive, Fergus Justice-Mills, said they had overcome initial problems like people thinking The Civic wasn’t open because parts of it weren’t

finished. Signposting the building from other parts of the town centre is being looked at. The type of shops introduced, such as interior, furniture, giftware or bed linen, will be in keeping with the exhibition, performance and creative objectives of The Civic. The retail section will be accessible from both the Eldon Street and Hanson Street entrances. Mr Justice-Mills said: “The difficulty is

we opened at the beginning of the economic downturn but that seems to be moving in a more positive way. “People are getting more confidence back and we are hopeful that will generate more interest. “The opening of the coffee bar is bringing people in who might not have come otherwise. “We have seen people coming to the gardens in the summer. It was a big

draw for people and the intention for the rest of the building is to try to sustain that. “With design and retail it is another opportunity for them to come to The Civic.” Communications manager Raychel Perks added: “Until we felt people were coming here as a destination it was difficult to get people to see how it was all going to work.”

Advertiser’s Announcement

‘I don’t smoke’ . . . three increasingly satisfying words that I am able to say when offered a cig’. I’ve now been smoke free for 150 days at the time of writing (If counting the days seems a little nerdy-read on). I decided that I must quit smoking for both health and financial reasons (to be honest more for financial reasons than health….how misguided is that?). I could never fool myself into thinking that I have the greatest will power in the world and that stopping would just be a matter saying No…I’ve been trying that for many years without success.

Steve Grimeshaw

Passing the Stop Smoking Service in

Barnsley one day I thought ‘what have I got to lose, I’ll see what they’ve got to offer’ This has got to be one best off the cuff decisions I’ve made in a long while. The initial consultation was friendly, informative, and as the initial weekly meetings continued, very supportive. I wont pretend that it has been easy all the way; I still have cravings for a cig every now and again, usually after a drink/meal. Ex smokers tell me that 20 years later they still feel the occasional urge for a cig’. If, in twenty years time, I can say ‘I still feel like a cig every now and again’…but shrug it off I’ll be a happy (and richer) man.

Back to my earlier point of counting the days. I believe if you want to stop smoking and need to see something tangible for doing so, make a note of how much you’re saving (try put that money away) I have a spread sheet on my desktop which each day adds up how much I’ve saved. The fact that 150 days of stopping smoking has put almost £1100 into a special savings account is fantastic (and given us an extra winter holiday this year) If you really want to stop and feel you can’t do it alone pay a visit to the Stop Smoking Service…it could change your life in so many ways.

Daisy the dog, a twoyear-old Jack Russell, will take to the stage with owner Claire Lucas to wow producers with a funny football routine. Claire, of Beaumont Avenue, Broadway, said the act is all about promoting children’s fitness and she is looking for children to join her on-stage. Claire, 33, said: “I say a rhyme and then we go on

stage to music wearing Barnsley football club kits. “We do keep-fit moves to the song and use a couple of footballs. Then Daisy comes on and she kicks the ball, then she does keepie-uppies with a balloon.” Claire is looking for children aged five to ten to join her on stage. Parents should contact Claire on 07951953268. The audition is in Manchester on November 28. n A video of Daisy and Claire is on www.barnsley-chronicle.co.uk

MP tackles bogus charity collections BOGUS charity collections have been brought to task in the Houses of Parliament. Jeff Ennis, MP for Barnsley East and Mexborough, raised the issue and is to meet the Minister for Voluntary Services, Angela Smith MP who will look at the problem of fake collections across South Yorkshire. Two charity workers from Mr Ennis’ constituency alerted him to the problem adding that millions of pounds are being taken away from legitimate charities and being diverted into the pockets of individuals. Mr Ennis said: “This is a deplorable practice and the Government must do everything within its powers to stop this. “Many of my constituents have a proud record of giving to worthy charities and I am sure many will be appalled at the thought they’re being tricked by some fraudsters into having their recycled clothes not being used to fund the charitable organisations

they believe they are supporting. “This is a very serious issue and I know that Cabinet Office Minister Angela Smith MP will be only too ready and willing to listen to my constituents' concerns.”

ATHERSLEY SCHEME MAY WIN TOP AWARD A NEIGHBOURHOOD scheme in Athersley and New Lodge has been shortlisted for two national awards.

Brain games: Worsbrough Common School pupils Ben Smith and Eden Dunn try to pick up jelly using chopsticks as part of the school’s Building Learning Power Day last week. Children took part in various activities including the parachute game and model making.

The Stronger Neighbourhoods Initiative (SNI) has been nominated for National Neighbourhood Management Team of the Year and Best Community Safety Initiative in the annual National Neighbourhood Management Awards. It has been recognised for working at neighbourhood level to improve the area as a place to live and for the use of community liaison wardens who work with the community, especially young people, to reduce anti-social behaviour and crime. They will find out if they have won at a ceremony in Birmingham later this month. Kate Faulkes, neighbourhood manager, said: “Given all the great work happening nationwide in neighbourhood management, we were overjoyed to even be nominated, but to be in with a chance of winning is great news and testament to all the hard work of everyone involved. “Regardless of the result, I would like to say a huge thank you to the community, partners in other organisations and local councillors – who have helped make this scheme a success, and one that, fingers crossed, will be recognised nationally.”

Life-saver: Blood donor Sue Ashton.

Sue has a lot on her plate SUE Ashton, 59, has helped save hundreds of lives by giving blood 142 times over the past 12 years. The Barnsley Hospital employee travels to Sheffield once a month to donate platelets which are used to help blood clot for chemotherapy patients. The platelets only last for five days and take over two hours to extract which is why they are in such short supply. The pharmacy administration officer of Allendale, Worsbrough, was given the diamond award from the National Blood Service.

HAGUE URGING BARNSLEY FOLK TO BOYCOTT THE BNP SHADOW cabinet member William Hague has said Barnsley should not let their frustration at Labour’s ‘failure’ tempt them to vote for the British National Party.

Mall says, why not spend a penny? THE Mall has asked customers to spend a penny, when spending a penny, to raise money for Sheffield Children’s Hospital. The hospital needs to raise £500,000 by the end of March to buy a CT scanner. More than 250,000 customers are expected to use the toilets over two months and will be asked to donate a penny or two to the cause. Mall manager Mark Broadhead said he thought it would be a great way of coming up with the funds. “The Children’s Hospital serves not only Sheffield but the surrounding area including the children of Barnsley,” he said. “Our toilets are some of the most modern and cleanest in Barnsley. “We don’t charge our customers to use these facilities, but thought what a fun and great way of raising some cash for the appeal. “If everyone using the facility donates a penny that’s £2,000, if everyone going to the toilet donates 2p that’s £4,000, which would be a fantastic achievement.”

Free trips to university FREE trips to South Yorkshire universities are available through the UVP/ Fenton neighbourhood learning net. There is an Early Years taster day at University Campus Barnsley on November 19, and a ‘Find out about Law’ event at the University of Sheffield on December 2. For more details or to book a place, call the learning net on 381119 or 391926.

The shadow foreign secretary was in Dodworth to support Conservative candidate MP Spencer Pitfield’s campaign. Mr Hague said: “It’s really important for all political parties to take on the BNP. They don’t have the

answers. Spencer is a really good candidate for Penistone and Stocksbridge and the Conservatives are doing very well in this area. “This is a good example of how the local people want change following a failure by the Labour government.” Mr Hague and Mr Pitfield invited representatives from South Yorkshire businesses to Dodworth to discuss what the party can do for them in the current economic crisis. Mr Hague, who led the party before

David Cameron took over, also said that the party can help Barnsley people get back into work and help those who have been affected by the recession. The former Wath-upon-Dearne comprehensive pupil said: “A Conservative government will be honest. We have to cut the size of government and cut the cost of politics. The politicians will be leading by example for a change.”
