COUPLE WIN COURT BATTLE WITH GOLF CLUB BY GAEL STIGANT A COUPLE who were owed about £3,000 by Silkstone Golf Club have won a court battle to get it back. Roy and Sandra Thompson were steward and caterer of the club from 2002 to 2008 but they had ongoing issues regarding their travelling

expenses whilst on club business. In a letter to the Chronicle, Ray said: “Unfortunately the club for six years refused to pay a full and proper amount, forcing us to take the club to the small claims court.” Following a meeting with the treasurer, the couple were promised £2,600, but they received a cheque for £2,117.76; £400 less than they had

expected. Ray said: “Despite our request for the balance, we were forced to chase this debt. “We put a claim in, and again to be fair, we applied for arbitration, but when we started this procedure we were insulted by an offer just to pay our legal expenditure.” On July 21, Ray and Sandra had a meeting with the club’s solicitor,

treasurer and secretary in an attempt to put ‘the whole mess’ behind them. “We had a hearing at Hull combined court, and the judgement was found in our favour,” said Ray. “We were awarded a further £718.37, plus interest and costs.” If any member wishes to see a copy of the judgement, Ray said they should send an SAE to the Wrygarth

Inn, Station Road, Gt Hatfield, Hornsea, HU11 4UY. The couple thanked members of the club for the friendship and support they received. Silkstone Golf Club confirmed the information in the letter is true, but did not wish to comment further.

Advertiser’s Announcement

Barnsley Stop Smoking Service 10th Anniversary ‘I don’t smoke’…three increasingly satisfying words that I am able to say when offered a cig’. I’ve now been smoke free for 150 days at the time of writing (If counting the days seems a little nerdy-read on). I decided that I must quit smoking for both health and financial reasons (to be honest more for financial reasons than health….how misguided is that?).

Steve Grimeshaw

I could never fool myself into thinking that I have the greatest will power in the world and that stopping would just be a matter saying No…I’ve been trying that for many years without success.

Passing the Stop smoking service in Barnsley one day I thought ‘what have I got to lose, I’ll see what they’ve got to offer’ This has got to be one best off the cuff decisions I’ve made in a long while. The initial consultation was friendly, informative, and as the initial weekly meetings continued, very supportive. I wont pretend that it has been easy all the way; I still have cravings for a cig every now and again, usually after a drink/meal. Ex smokers tell me that 20 years later they still feel the occasional urge for a cig’. If, in twenty years time, I can say ‘I still feel like a cig every now and again’…but shrug it off I’ll be a happy (and richer) man.

Back to my earlier point of counting the days. I believe if you want to stop smoking and need to see something tangible for doing so, make a note of how much you’re saving (try put that money away) I have a spread sheet on my desktop which each day adds up how much I’ve saved. The fact that 150 days of stopping smoking has put almost £1100 into a special savings account is fantastic (and given us an extra winter holiday this year) If you really want to stop and feel you can’t do it alone pay a visit to the Stop Smoking Service…it could change your life in so many ways.

COUNCILLOR FIGHTS FOR RESIDENTS A TOWN Centre councillor is renewing her call for a block of houses at the bottom of Harborough Hill Road to be knocked down. Air quality is monitored all year round and falls below minimum standards due to heavy traffic. At a town hall meeting, Coun Margaret Bruff said: “How are these people supposed to be putting up with pollution over the limit? “The little block of terraced houses at the bottom should have been knocked down before they ever built the road because it was obvious there was going to be a major problem.” Coun Bruff’s house on Harborough Hill was knocked down in the early 70s when the route was made a dual carriage way. After the meeting, she told the Chronicle: “I still think it is something we should consider — knocking that block down and finding those people somewhere decent to live.”

She said there were problems all the way up the road, and in other areas around Barnsley, but the problem was particularly bad for that block of six, because cars accelerate hard in the approach to the hill. There are four lanes of traffic outside the houses and numerous sets of traffic lights close by where stationary traffic pours out fumes. One resident, who did not want to be named, said: “It is awful. We never open our front windows. You can smell the fumes.” She said she is not sure whether she would want to move though as she has lived there 50 years and would have to ‘think very hard’ about it. Coun Bruff also told the environment scrutiny commission meeting that a high concentration of traffic fumes tended to build up under the railway bridge on Eldon Street North. She said: “If a young mother is walking up and down there a few times a day, walking into school or

walking into town, they’re going to get a face full of fumes.” She said the council should consider putting its pollution monitoring equipment under that bridge. Council official Ken Eastwood said it was better to record the levels near homes so they could take annual averages of what people are regularly exposed to. He said you would need to have someone ‘living under the bridge for a year’ before it became an issue. However, commission member Robin Norbury said he had seen research claiming short blasts of intense pollution could act as a ‘trigger’ to start health problems. The commission is now investigating air quality and chairman Coun Graham Kyte said he wanted to hear from members of the public with air quality concerns. He said: “Anyone with any specific issues should contact scrutiny advisor Claire Mangham on 773077.”

Barnsley Central MP Eric Illsley put on a pink jumper to show his support for the breast cancer campaign. Fund-raising events will be taking place on Friday for the campaign and Mr Illsley is

urging residents to wear pink and donate £2 for the charity. He said: “Every year more than 45,500 women and 300 men in the UK are diagnosed with breast cancer. “Like many others, I have lost

friends and family members to breast cancer. I would like to encourage everyone in Barnsley to support ‘wear it pink day’ on October 30, to raise valuable funds for breast cancer research.” (S)

HOW does a 20-yearold lad pay tribute to a grandfather he is proud of? Answer – Write a musical about him. Jack Noble’s ‘stage name’ is Jack Land Noble – a nod to grandfather on his mother’s side, Jack Land, 79, of Birch Road, Kendray. He was a renowned boxer and wrestler for 40 years, dubbed one of Barnsley’s Sporting Heroes by the book of the same name. He partnered Brian Glover in the 1950s as ‘The Toffs’. Also known as Karl Von Kramer, after he stood in for a German wrestler who didn’t turn up one night, he is the main inspiration for Grappling, his grandson’s semi-biographical musical comedy drama to be staged at the Lamproom next year. It chronicles the story of broad-shouldered Jack Harper, a man who knows his place in life and had no other option but to follow the accepted route of going down the pit. An underground tragedy leads him to evaluate his

own mortality, and he quits the pit for a string of unsuccessful jobs before finding his way into the pro wrestling circuit. Although a comedy, there is drama and melancholy too. Jack said: “It is gritty, with an element of kitchen sink drama to it. “I’ve tried to create something that’s theatrically unique. “It takes a look at that old-time British wrestling tradition. “It illustrates the backstage drama, the camaraderie, the tension, the dressing room bust-ups, the promoters, and the way the wrestlers were sometimes manipulated by their management. “It climaxes with a one round bout which brings all the elements together.” It is set around the period 1969 and 1974 and like many Barnsley-set stories it includes the family mining heritage, and some ‘bleak, hard times’. The real Jack was the villain or ‘heel’ in the ring, a fierce man not to be messed with. Young Jack said: “His persona was ‘the evil German’ – quite the opposite to his friend, the babyfaced Gordon Allen, who

was ‘Pedro the Gypsy’. “But out of the ring he is a quiet man, a private man. “I call him a hippy without the hair.” Although young Jack takes inspiration from his grandfather, he is heading in a very different direction in life. He said: “He’s the family boxer and wrestler, I’m the family pianist.” He is a well-established thespian, musician and director, he is well spoken and even rolls his Rs. He is studying drama at the University of Huddersfield. He is already an awardwinning playwright, although Grappling will be his first full-length musical. Jack Snr said although he and his grandson are very different, there are similarities between their two backgrounds. He said: “It’s all theatre, really. “I couldn’t do what he does. But the wrestling game, there’s not that much to it that’s real. “It’s all a show.” Grappling will be staged at the Lamproom from June 14 to 19 and tickets go on sale on December 1.

Previously located on Wellington Street, owner Tracy Asquith moved Nutopia to its new premises for a better location and a more spacious layout. The new salon is instantly welcoming with modern decor, dark wood floors, soft leather seating and steel work stations. A striking red and black theme runs throughout the salon, into the beauty area and even through the staff’s wardrobe, reflecting a stylish and professional attitude. In addition to Tracy, the friendly team at Nutopia consists of stylists Julie, Becky, Lauren and Laura (also known as Ellie), who has recently joined the team from another town centre salon. The girls pride themselves on providing first class customer care, taking their clients through a consultation process to ensure they leave the salon completely satisfied. Nutopia offers a full range of hair treatments for both males and females, adults and children, including special rates for teens. In addition to offering cuts, colours, restyles and blow-dries, the girls at Nutopia also offer a wide selection of coloured Balmain hair extensions and are fully experienced in bridal hair, including pinups. Nutopia is the only stockist of Joico hair products in the Barnsley area, carefully selected by Tracy for its unique penetration technology called Trans-Cuticle Delivery System.

Bed Head Tigi and Fudge hair products are also used and sold within the salon. In the calming beauty area of Nutopia, experienced therapist Louise Joyce offers an array of luxurious treatments including facials, massages, spray tans and waxing. Louise takes all her clients through an initial consultation process to ensure the products are suited to the client’s skin type. Clients are then encouraged to relax as Louise works her magic to reduce the stresses and strains of day-to-day life. Guinot products are used in all facials while Nailtiques are used for hands and feet treatments including manicures and pedicures. More unusual treatments include Hopi Ear Candling, which can help with problems such as excessive ear wax, sinus congestion and tinnitus, as well as reflexology treatments which use thumb and finger manipulations to work on reflexes. To celebrate the new Nutopia salon the full team will be hosting a special open evening on November 1 from 6pm to 9pm. The event will include special offers for clients booking appointments on the evening, as well as the opportunity to meet the team and take a look around the stunning salon. So if you are in need of some serious pampering, or require a head-to-toe body boost before the festive season, contact Nutopia on 01226 785252 or look up the Nutopia Hair & Beauty Facebook page for further information and special offers.

DARYL GETS HIS FREEDOM BACK DARYL Watson has been given the freedom to go where he wants, when he wants, thanks to the Motability Contract Hire Scheme. Thirty-two-year-old Daryl, from Barnsley, has degeneration of the spine and as a result can’t leave the house without his wheelchair or scooter. Using public transport proved difficult for Daryl and taxis expensive, so getting out and about with his family was a struggle until a Motability specialist at his local Perrys car dealership introduced him to the Motability Contract Hire Scheme. Throughout 2008/2009, Perrys dealerships across the country supported the Motability dealer fund-raising campaign raising £2,700 for Motability’s Charitable Grants Fund. This money is used to help customers like Daryl and their families to drive independently by providing adaptations or help towards advance payments. Ray Sommerville, managing director of Perrys, said: “We were delighted we could present Daryl and his wife with a Motability car. It isn’t until disability touches people personally that they realise how it can affect their freedom.” Now driving his second car with Motability, Daryl explains how much easier his life has become. “Having a Motability car is a great help,”

says Daryl. “I’ve chosen a Citroën Picasso, which is large enough to stow my wheelchair in the boot and Motability has arranged for a tie down system to be fitted so that it stays secure. “As well as giving us independence, the car is also very economical. Everything from insurance, tax, tyre replacement, maintenance, servicing and breakdown cover is taken care of so it really helps us to plan our finances. All I have to do is fill up with petrol and go – it’s that simple.” Daryl is one of over 520,000 disabled people currently exchanging their Government funded mobility allowance for a car, powered wheelchair or scooter through the Motability Scheme. A number of adaptations are available at no extra cost through the Contract Hire Scheme, however some, like Daryl’s wheelchair tie down system, require a financial contribution. Motability raises money for the Charitable Grants Fund to help some people with the cost of adaptations, the advance payment for a car and driving lessons for 18 to 24-year-olds. Motability also administers funds on behalf of the Government to provide financial help towards the cost of more complex adaptations and wheelchair accessible vehicles.

Fight password fraud RESEARCH shows that millions of people, particularly those above 60, are failing to adequately protect their accounts and personal information when online. The internet is an integral part of everyday life and almost all essential services are now available online. On average, we subscribe to seven internet services, such as internet banking or online shopping sites, and almost a third of us subscribe to ten or more. However, according to research from moneysupermarket.com, almost a fifth of people use the same password for all their accounts and, of those with ten or more, 18 per cent use the same password for all of them. The survey also reveals just 12 per cent of people use the recommended secure mix of numbers, capitals and lower case letters when creating their passwords, falling to nine per cent for those in their 60s and eight per cent for those over 70. James Parker, broadband manager at the price comparison site moneysupermarket.com, said: “It’s crucial people take proper precautions to protect themselves from securi-

ty threats, those that don’t are leaving the door wide open to online thieves and hackers.” A second report from moneysupermarket.com revealed one in six people with wireless routers is failing to put a password on his connection and over 3.5 million people admit to having used someone else’s wireless internet connection without permission in the past 12 months. Moneysupermark et.com has these five top tips on how to stay secure: 1. Use a mixture of numbers, upper case and lower case letters in passwords. 2. Try to use a different password for each service you subscribe to. 3. Never write passwords down and always uncheck ‘remember me’ on public computers. 4. Password protect your wireless internet connection with non-dictionary words and numbers. 5. Make sure you have appropriate security software and firewall.

At the top of Racecommon Road, directly opposite St. Edward’s Church Our Hospice provides specialist palliative care for hundreds of local people each year, completely free of charge. Every patient is recognised and treated as an individual, in a relaxed, warm and friendly environment. With our support they are able to enjoy the best possible quality of life throughout their illness. We are a registered charity and although we receive a significant amount of funding from NHS Barnsley, we also rely on the generosity of the public to ensure that we provide comfort, care and dignity to all our patients. We have an inpatient unit with ten beds, day hospice facilities and outpatient services. Whilst managing a patient’s pain and other symptoms, we also care for their emotional, spiritual and social needs. In addition to a team of highly experienced doctors and nurses, the Hospice has specialists in a wide range of roles including complementary therapy, physiotherapy, social work, bereavement, lymphoedema and chaplaincy. Barnsley Hospice raises money through a number of fundraising initiatives, such as events, appeals and income from our charity shops. An additional, very important, source of funding is from people kindly leaving a gift in their Will. This is a great way to ensure that we can continue to make a difference, not only now but in years to come, when we can be there to help future generations. Janet O’Hara, one of the Fundraising team at the Hospice, explained ‘It is estimated that almost 40% of UK residents have not yet made a Will. Doing so can give you peace of mind that your loved ones are provided for and the knowledge that your wishes will be carried out. If you feel able to leave Barnsley Hospice a gift, it will help us to provide care for local people long into the future.’ If you would like to discuss leaving a gift to Barnsley Hospice in your Will, please contact Janet on 01226 323626 or e mail janeto’hara@barnsleyhospice.org

Shop around for cover SPECIALIST insurers for older drivers do not always provide the best value option for motorists, according to moneysupermarket.com Research from the price comparison site found older drivers could be stung by specialist insurance. Andy Leadbetter, managing director of insurance at moneysupermarket.com, said: “Our research reveals older drivers must be wary of paying more than necessary. It’s quick and easy to compare insurance and find a quote online. I urge motorists to shop around, across the whole market, to ensure finding the best cover to suit their needs.”

A SERIES of simple steps – including flossing your teeth regularly – could add years to your life, according to new research. Norwich Union data has identified a list of factors that could – theoretically – bump up the UK average life expectancy. The study pinpoints how many years certain habits or lifestyle choices could actually add to an individual’s life. ● Be married/ live w ith a par tner — add up to a year. The data shows people who are married or live with a partner can expect to live on average a year more than their single friends. ● Maintain a healthy weight — add up to six years. Being severely obese (having a BMI of above 40) could reduce your life expectancy by around four years. According to the Food Standards Agency, a healthy BMI level is between 18.5 and 25. On the other hand, being underweight might reduce your life expectancy by around two years, so maintaining a healthy weight is vital. ● Don’t smok e — add up to ten years. Research carried out at the University of Helsinki has found that people who don’t smoke can expect to live up ten years longer than those who smoke 20 cigarettes a day. ● Clear out the clutter – add up to a year. People who live in jumble and chaos are more likely to feel stressed and

depressed. Sorting out this disorder can add another year. ●● Eat well — add up to 6.6 years. According to Erasmus University in Rotterdam, a diet that includes daily consumption of garlic, wine, vegetables, fruits, almonds and dark chocolate could extend life expectancy by up to 6.6 years. ● Eat less meat — add up to 3.6 years. A study carried out at Loma University in the US found that people who ate meat less than once a week on average lived 3.6 years longer than their carnivore counterparts. ● Love to laugh — add up to eight years. According to scientific studies, people who laugh for 15 minutes each day add an extra eight years to their lives. ● Get a good night’s sleep — add up to five years. Poor sleep can contribute to a number of medical factors that can put people at risk of heart disease. Those who regularly get at least six or seven hours’ sleep can hope to live up to five years longer than those who sleep badly. ● Get a pet — add up to two years. US research shows that people with pets are less likely to suffer from depression and visit their doctors less often than those without. It is also said that stroking a pet can reduce blood pressure and stress levels.

IF you’re looking for an autumn getaway with plenty of culture, head for Okinawa. The destination is one of those places most people have heard of, but very few visit – and they could be making a big mistake. It is the most southern prefecture of Japan and consists of nearly 150 islands, which are scattered over 350 miles. An ancient kingdom of glittering seas, lush green islands and sugar cane fields, Okinawa enjoys a very relaxed pace of life that’s perfect for a relaxing holiday. A subtropical climate also keeps Okinawa pleasantly warm even when the rest of Japan is shivering, and in the hot summer months it is perfect for diving, water-skiing, sailing and every other form of ocean recreation. Okinawa was a independent kingdom called Ryukyu in the 15th century before it came under the protection of Satsuma (Kagoshima) of Kyushu, Japan and China. As Japan became a modern state it took over the Ryukyu and changed the name of the islands to Okinawa in 1879 and it later was the last great battleground of Second World War before the Japanese surrender. Okinawa has always seen itself as something special and has preserved many its unique traditions of the Ryukyu kingdom, including the language, arts, and music. The largest island is Okinawa island, where the capital city, Naha is located. Lots of hotels have been built here, and the beautiful beaches attract many visitors from main islands of Japan.

T here are plenty of sites to see on Ok inawa Island including: Shuri-jo castle park The view here is spectacular. Shurijo castle was the residence of the Ryukyu royal family for over 400 years. Gyok usen-do Cave This cave is three miles long. More than 200,000 stalactites are beautifully formed. Also, there is Habu snake park. Himeyuri Monument This monument was built to honour the 219 high school students and teachers who helped Japanese soldiers as war nurses, but killed themselves after being surrounded by US soldiers. International Street The main street in Naha-city is called Kokusai-Dori. On the one mile street, there are many souvenir shops, department stores, clothing stores, hotels, and restaurants. One of the most attractive features of Okinawa is the ocean with its coral reefs. The beautiful waters attract divers from all over the world.

Older population are more savvy energy savers THE over-55s are 25 per cent more likely to shrink their monthly bills by being energy efficient than the younger generation, according to a new survey from Opus Energy, an independent electricity supplier for UK businesses. The survey asked more than 500 people about the energy saving steps they take both at home and at work. The findings showed that when it comes to tightening belts, the baby boomer generation are steps ahead of younger generations. Having lived through two recessions and grown up in post-war Britain, the over-55s are well versed in making those small steps that add up to real financial savings. The results showed that over 55s are good at making effcient use of modern technology. In the workplace, the baby boomers are three times more likely to switch off phone chargers when not in use, with 43 per cent switching off compared to just one in ten (13 per cent) of under 25s making the effort. The baby boomers also have the most effcient tea breaks at work, with more

than half the over 55s (55 per cent) taking care not to boil more water than they need each time, compared to under a third (27 per cent) of under 25s. Even though two thirds (66 per cent) of young people claim they are switching to energy-saving bulbs to help curb costs at home, nine out of ten (88 per cent) over 55s said they had already made the energy-efficient swap. As the baby boomers are clearly demonstrating, when energy costs are high and belts are tightening, small energy-saving steps can be enough to equate to big savings. Louise Boland, director at Opus Energy, said: “It’s clear that having lived through two recessions, our older generations are more adapt at taking steps to save on their energy usage to cut their bills. “What is interesting is that the older generations have really embraced the energy saving benefits of modern technology, to an even greater degree than their younger counterparts. “Technology such as energy-saving bulbs can be more expensive in the short term, but over their life time will save you Bright idea: Energy-saving light bulbs are a great way of cutting down your energy bills and saving the environment. (S) up to £35 in electricity costs.”

KEIRA’S BOWLED OVER BY DOUG O’KANE WHEN Keira Reay started spending her Saturday mornings at Barnsley Bowl after her mum got a job there, she quickly realised the sport of ten pin bowling was right up her alley. Keira would bowl every week with friends while her mum worked – and after five years of coaching, competitons and hard work she has become the first ever girl from Barnsley to be selected for the England Bowling Academy. The 13-year-old’s big break came when she was

Barnsley bowler: Keira Reay. spotted winning the girls’ competition at the County Championship in Nuneaton. The following

day, her father John received an email inviting his daughter to join the academy. Keira, who lives opposite Barnsley Bowl on Carlton Road, said: “I am overjoyed. I’m really looking forward to it. “I have wanted to do this ever since I first started bowling. “I hope I am good enough to reach the highest levels.” Keira’s dream is to compete for Europe in the Weber Cup, a competition which is held every two years and has been staged at the Barnsley Metrodome several times, including last year. She said: “That is what I am aiming for. I really want to make it right to the top – and to win the Weber Cup at the Metrodome would be amazing.” Keira’s mum Erica says the family were ecstatic

when they heard of her selection to the academy. “It is phenomenal news. The whole family is so proud of her. “My husband got the news and rang us up and screamed down the phone. “We are all so happy. All the coaches have told us at the tournaments that she is very good. “At Nuneaton no-one could believe how well she did. “The way she was bowling was incredible for a 13year-old girl. She was better than most of the adults there.” The location of the Academy changes every year and currently it is based in Sheffield. Keira will work with the top coaches in the country for one day every month, from nine in the morning until six at night. With Keira attending tournaments every week-

ing points by competing. “It is a lot of money and a lot of travelling but it is completely worth it because Keira really enjoys it. “We love watching her and we want her to go as far as she can, which could be a very long way.”
