COUPLE ENGAGE ON BIG SCREEN SHOPPERS cheered when Mark Wilson proposed to his girlfriend over the big screen in Meadowhall. Mark, of Blenheim Road, Barnsley, contacted the shopping mall, near Sheffield, to set up his special proposal in the centre’s food court. His girlfriend of four years, Danielle Taylor, immediately said ‘yes’ and the couple were treated to a meal and champagne. Mark, 31, who met Danielle on holiday
in Magaluf, said: “Proposing to Danielle over the big screen was amazing. “It will be something we will both always remember as one of those totally surreal moments and I’m sure not many people can say they have done the same.” Danielle, 24, originally from Warwickshire, said: “He told me we were going to the cinema and having lunch with friends – I cried when he got down on one knee.” The couple hope to marry within two years at Nottingham Racecourse.

A COMPLAINT that Locke Park is being given ‘too much’ money is being investigated by the council. A spokesman for the council confirmed it was investigating the issue of ‘106 money’ for the park — money which housing developers have to put back into local communities as a condition of planning permission for major developments. Labour Coun Kath Mitchell, who represents the Kingstone ward which covers the park, made the complaint. She agrees the park should be well looked after, but grant funding should be spread more widely among other groups as well as the park. “It does need funding, but not every little bit. It’s just not fair on the rest.” The park has also benefited from several smaller grants from the community support fund, which is money given out by local councillors in each ward. The Friends of Locke Park are campaigning to raise about £300,000 to save the park’s tower, which has fallen into disrepair. A 106 grant of £57,000 has been earmarked towards this cause, but Coun Mitchell says further money should be spread more widely. Former councillor Peter Doyle also com-
plains the park is over-funded. He has campaigned for years for changing rooms for the eight football teams at Worsbrough Common, which is in the same council ward. He said: “We’d been told years ago money was put aside for changing rooms, but it’s disappeared.” Both he and Coun Mitchell say it should be the whole of Barnsley that pays for the park, not just the residents of the Kingstone ward, because it is for the benefit of the whole borough. Coun Malcolm Price, Barnsley Independent Group, says he agrees it shouldn’t just be the Kingstone ward which pays, but says the park needs every bit of funding it can get. “It’s a park of historical interest. The tower is a grade two listed building. We’ve got to do whatever we can to preserve it. David Allen, chair of the Friends of Locke Park, said he understood there was a lot of competition for the funding, but said his group would do all it could to help other causes, in terms of providing space or equipment for events, or help with applications for grant funding. The council says the investigation should reach a conclusion ‘in the near future’.

They say there is nowhere for their youngsters to play as swings have been removed, soft matting pulled up and fences taken down. Ardsley Recreation Ground did not receive funding in last year’s playground review as the council considered it to have NEAP (Neighbourhood) standard facilities. But parents say they would not even consider taking their children to the park as it is ‘unsafe’ and ‘inadequate’. Wendy Galley, 40, who has a son aged four and a daughter aged two, said: “About £55,000 was spent on an all-weather pitch which is used by older boys to hang out in at night drinking and smoking. More money was wasted on two French boule sand areas which were never finished because the funding was pulled. “But there is nowhere for little children to play so we end up taking them to the skate park which is really unsuitable. “Our own councillor Karen Dyson, who is soon to be mayor, lives in Ardsley and passes this every day but just won’t do anything about it.” Mum of three Melissa Buxton, 33, claims parents were told Ardsley Park would not see improvements because it was not in a ‘deprived area’. She said: “Tell me what classes as a deprived area. Kendray has a new play area, Darfield and
Stairfoot do as well, so why not us?” Robert Stendall and Roy Marsden of the Ardsley Residents’ Association said the group received funding for a MUGA (multi use games area) but were turned down for further funding. Roy said: “We have had applications turned down and funding withdrawn and it is devastating when we get complaints from residents.” A council spokesman said: “We have received a number of reports about vandalism to the park. We are working closely with the police on this matter. “It is a great shame for all of those who use the park, particularly after all the hard work from the Friends Group and the community have put into improving the facilities.”

spooks and sparks
NIGHT’S SPOOKY ROOTS HALLOWE’EN is here again on Sunday, providing the perfect excuse to play some spooky games. In America Hallowe’en is huge, with lots of children dressing up to go around playing ‘trick or treat’ on neighbours. While the Americans have exploited the commercial aspects of Hallowe’en, it all started with the Celts, ancient inhabitants of Britain who celebrated their new year on November 1. The festival marked the end of the ‘season of the sun’ and the beginning of the ‘season of darkness and cold’. On ‘new year’s eve’, October 31, it was believed that Samhain, Lord of the Dead and Prince of Darkness, called together all the dead people. On this day the Druids, who were the priests and teachers of the Celts, would meet in sacred oak forests, light fires and offer sacrifices. Before dawn they danced around the fires to mark the passing of the seasons. When the morning arrived the Druids would give an ember from their fires to each family who would then take them home to start new cooking fires to keep the homes warm and free from evil spirits In 835 AD the church made November 1 a church holiday to honour all the saints – All Saints’ Day. It also used to be known as Hallowmas or All Hallows, and the evening before gradually became known as All Hallow’s Eve then Hallowe’en.
But what is behind many of the activities associated with Hallowe’en today? Many people make Jack O’Lanterns. People once carved out beets, potatoes and turnips to use as lanterns on Hallowe’en. Now they use pumpkins – another American import. According to an Irish legend, Jack O’Lanterns were named after a man who could not enter heaven because he was a miser and could not enter hell because he had played jokes on the devil. So instead, Jack had to walk the
earth with his lantern until Judgement Day. The tradition of dressing in costume for Hallowe’en has both European and Celtic roots. On Hallowe’en, when it was believed that ghosts came back to the earth, people thought that they would encounter ghosts if they left their homes. To avoid being recognised by these ghosts, people would wear masks when they left homes at night so the ghosts would mistake them for fellow spirits. Trick or Treat was first known as Mischief Night.

Hallowe’en was a time for making mischief – many parts of the country still recognise this date as Mischief Night – when children would knock on doors demanding a treat and people would disguise themselves as witches, ghosts, goblins and sprites, in order to obtain food and money from nervous householders. So when you get ready for your party, remember you are celebrating a festival that goes back thousands of years.

No sweat: A boxing enthusiast from Dodworth took on World and European Heptathlon Champion Jessica Ennis in a ‘sweat session’. Roofer Ben Davies, 21, took part in the session with Ennis at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield. It was designed to highlight the importance of hydration during exercise. Ben was chosen for his fitness and ability to cope without stopping for a sustained period. He said: “It was an unbelievable experience.” Picture: Action Images/Carl Recine.
GLEN TO LEAD TRANSPLANT GAMES SQUAD A BARNSLEY man who was given six months to live in 2007 will captain Great Britain in floorball at the World Transplant Games next summer – if he can raise £2,000 by Christmas. Glen Taylor, 42, suffered from severe diabetes and kidney failure and was told he would be dead inside six months. But thanks to a new kidney and pancreas he is now completely healthy. Two years ago he began to play floorball, which is identical to hockey but played indoors. He has enjoyed remarkable success and represented his country at the World Transplant Games in Australia last year. Glen, originally from Royston but who now lives in Athersley, has been selected as captain for the 2011 games in Goteburg, Sweden. He needs to collect £2,000 to make the competition and is organising sponsored swims and bike rides. “I am pretty hopeful of raising the money. “It will be an amazing experience to go out to Sweden and captain my country,” said Taylor. “I have to thank Barnsley Premier Leisure and Royston Leisure Centre who have really helped me. “They have let me use
‘I am pretty hopeful of raising the money. It will be an amazing experience to go out to Sweden and captain my country’ – Glen Taylor the pool and gym for free and the staff are extremely friendly. “I could not have done it without them.”
Glen is looking for companies to help him achieve his goal. He can be contacted on 07704 700871.
