TIME TO REPAIR ‘BROKK’ CLOCK BY MIKE COTTON THAT clock – it’s brokk. The clock on the side of The Civic proved such a talking point that singer Dave Cherry wrote a song about it singing “It’s brokk that clock, on t’side o t’Civic ‘All.” But now it really is ‘brokk’. The thousands of red LEDs representing the hands of the clock have been off for the last few days. Dave said: “I can’t believe it. It’s not my fault it’s broken. I was just look-
ing for a new song to go in my musical, the Old Club Trip, and in Barnsley we like to joke about what we’ve got. “It’s not that I’m making fun of the clock – I like it. I think it’s an asset for Barnsley. But I still can’t tell the time on it.” Civic spokesman Raychel Perks said the clock has been out of action for a week. She said they were waiting for a part to get it working. She said: “It never broke until Dave
wrote that song.” Many people who’ve spoken to the Chronicle since it was switched on two years ago say they can’t tell the time on the clock. When it works, the LEDs form three red lines of light, moving round the clock like snakes in a rectangular formation. ■ See Dave Cherry perform his song in a video report at www.barnsley-chronicle.co.uk

Barnsley NHS Stop Smoking Service Dan Sharp Stop Smoking Journey I stopped smoking two years ago now, in August 2008. I heard about the Stop Smoking Service through the adverts in the Chronicle, and my partner also works for the NHS, so she was encouraging me to stop smoking as well. I was smoking on average around 20 cigarettes per day, I didn’t really have any health problems, apart from the smokers cough on a morning. The Stop Smoking Service were really supportive and it was really nice to come into the service every week to have that honest, open conversation and with someone who never judged you for it. Ultimately they helped me to be true to
myself, which helped me achieve my goal. I would recommend the service to anyone who is trying to quit smoking. When I started to cut down on the cigarettes, I needed something to fill my evenings. I started running on an evening, short distances at first, but now I am running six miles, five to six times a week. I’ve done a number of challenges, including riding the Trans Pennine Trail, both Three Peaks challenges, half marathons and loads of walks in between. I am currently training for a 5 day, 192 mile Coast to Coast walk. Whilst I was giving up smoking, I had my peaks and troughs, just like everyone
does and it took me about four to five months to get rid off the ‘real’ cravings. I would really like to encourage people to give up smoking, and highlight that there is life after smoking and it’s imperrative to fill that gap with something. I will shortly be doing the Wainright, 192 mile Coast to Coast walk for Marie Curie Cancer and if you would like to sponsor me please visit www.justgiving.com/dannysharp CONTACT THE STOP SMOKING SERVICE ON 01226 737077 FOR AN APPOINTMENT AND BRING THIS VOUCHER IN WITH YOU.

THE WILL SERVICE LTD
The episode of Come Dine With Me was filmed last November and will be broadcast on October 18. One of those who took part, author Milly Johnson of Dodworth Road, Barnsley, refused to reveal the winner but said they had a lot of fun filming. “I have never drunk so much in my life or been so tired,” she said. “Sometimes you weren’t getting in until 3am and then you got picked up the following night at 6.30pm. It was full on but a great laugh. “You forget the cameras are there quite quickly and get on with it. We have all stayed in touch even though they sometimes got on your nerves, you really do bond that week.” It will be aired on Channel 4 at 5pm.

PROTESTERS will take to the streets of Barnsley at the same time as anticipated cuts to public services are announced. Barnsley Trades Council is organising a rally in Peel Square as the government reveals the outcome of its spending review on October 20. It wants to drum up public opposition to any cuts imposed on Barnsley. A Trades Council spokesman said every public service job loss would lead to another in the private sector. Brian Steele, Trades Council secretary, said: “We owe it to our town to mount a campaign that will save the vital facilities people in Barnsley depend on.” The Peel Square rally will start at noon.

Josh Simms, 18, of Woodroyd Close, Carlton, is principal cornet with Barnsley Metropolitan Band which competed at Bolsover Festival of Brass. Each band had to play a 20-minute ‘entertaining’ programme of its choice
and one of the band’s five pieces was Josh’s solo Sugar Blues. He impressed the adjudicator who gave him the trophy for best soloist of the day. His conductor and teacher Alex Francis said: “It’s like the adjudicator said, the solo really suited Josh’s playing. “He really got into the jazzy, bluesy style of the piece. I couldn’t have played it better myself.” Despite Josh’s playing, the band didn’t win the competition overall.
A BARNSLEY cornet player was crowned best soloist out of 12 brass bands from around the country.
Solo star: Josh Simms won a prize for his fine playing.

PUPILS SEEK WAR MEMORIES BY MIKE COTTON PRIMARY school children from Birdwell want to hear from people who have memories of the Second World War. Birdwell Primary pupils Zara Johnson, and Evie Flewitt-Tilston, both nine, wrote to the Chronicle this week on behalf of their class, asking if readers could help them with a project on the war. Most of their grandparents were born after it had finished and have found it
difficult to find out what it was like living in Barnsley at the time. They said: “Our class is making a book about people’s wartime memories. If you have any interesting family stories or information from World War Two, we would be very grateful if you could send them to us.” They are also looking for photographs, or artefacts or objects from the era. Contact email@example.com or phone 742957.

Last year they were paid a total of almost £1m, so the five per cent cut will mean a saving of about £50,000. It is thought Barnsley Council is one of the first authorities voting to cut pay to all elected members, although several have talked about it. Hull City Council has reduced the pay of its cabinet members. The cut covers the basic £10,975 allowance paid to all 63 members, but also the special responsibility allowances paid to those with additional duties, including cabinet members. The biggest loser will be council leader Steve Houghton, whose package will drop almost £1,900 from the £37,500 he was paid last year. He said: “I would hope all members will agree with this. As elected members we have got to share some of the pain.” Coun Houghton confirmed the cut would affect all councillors, but not the council workforce. But staff pay could still be reviewed in future. He said: “We rule nothing in and nothing out at this stage.” Coun Phil Birkinshaw, leader of Barnsley Independent Group, said he agreed with the cut, but thinks the salaries of council staff should also be reduced. “We always say the pay of the council’s chief officers should be reviewed. I think those staff on salaries of more
than £50,000 a year could afford to take a cut.” But Labour’s Coun Tim Cheetham said he did not agree with singling sections of the workforce out, and if officers’ pay was to be cut, it should be across the board and not just the top earners. “We’d obviously protect the lowest earners, on minimum wage. But we’ve gone through an extensive review to make sure everyone is now on a salary which reflects their job, so it would not be fair to target people on certain salaries. “My personal view – and it is only my personal view – I would rather see everyone take a five per cent pay cut, than see five per cent lose everything. But until we see the final settlement from the government in the pay review, we don’t know what’s going to happen.” Ray Oldroyd, convenor for Unison, said he welcomed the proposed pay cut for councillors, but did not think staff pay should be reduced any further: “When you consider pay has been frozen this year and for the next two years, that already amounts to more than a five per cent pay cut taking inflation into account.” Matthew Sinclair, director of the Taxpayers’ Alliance, said: “Councillors need to establish the moral authority they need in order to impose necessary cuts.” The councillors’ pay cut has been agreed unanimously by the council’s Labour members, but it will go to a vote of the whole council later in the year.
Fireworks will not be sold to anyone under 18 years of age. All fireworks conform to BS 7114
BARNSLEY’S councillors are to take a five per cent pay cut next year to help reduce the number of job losses caused by budget cuts.
