TOILETS PLAN DOWN THE PAN AN ENVIRONMENT group which suggested ways the council could improve public toilets in Barnsley while saving money is ‘disappointed’ its ideas have been ignored. The Environment Scrutiny Commission, made up of councillors and members of the public, said the council should come up with a plan to set up ‘community toilet schemes’ where businesses allow people to use their toilets, in return for a small fee or service. They said it would save money while improving availability. But the council’s ruling cabinet has said

there are no funds to look into it, but it would be considered when it comes to looking at the budget for the next financial year. Chairman of the group, Coun Graham Kyte, told a meeting: “I know this really is the most negative response there has ever been to a scrutiny commission recommendation. “I think we should express our disappointment, and hope that this is given very serious consideration when it does come to the budget next year. “There are real opportunities to improve services and save money.”

Barnsley NHS Stop Smoking Service Dan Sharp Stop Smoking Journey I stopped smoking two years ago now, in August 2008. I heard about the Stop Smoking Service through the adverts in the Chronicle, and my partner also works for the NHS, so she was encouraging me to stop smoking as well. I was smoking on average around 20 cigarettes per day, I didn’t really have any health problems, apart from the smokers cough on a morning. The Stop Smoking Service were really supportive and it was really nice to come into the service every week to have that honest, open conversation and with someone who never judged you for it. Ultimately they helped me to be true to

myself, which helped me achieve my goal. I would recommend the service to anyone who is trying to quit smoking. When I started to cut down on the cigarettes, I needed something to fill my evenings. I started running on an evening, short distances at first, but now I am running six miles, five to six times a week. I’ve done a number of challenges, including riding the Trans Pennine Trail, both Three Peaks challenges, half marathons and loads of walks in between. I am currently training for a 5 day, 192 mile Coast to Coast walk. Whilst I was giving up smoking, I had my peaks and troughs, just like everyone

does and it took me about four to five months to get rid off the ‘real’ cravings. I would really like to encourage people to give up smoking, and highlight that there is life after smoking and it’s imperrative to fill that gap with something. I will shortly be doing the Wainright, 192 mile Coast to Coast walk for Marie Curie Cancer and if you would like to sponsor me please visit www.justgiving.com/dannysharp CONTACT THE STOP SMOKING SERVICE ON 01226 737077 FOR AN APPOINTMENT AND BRING THIS VOUCHER IN WITH YOU.

Pair take on pub again A COUPLE have embarked on their second stint as licensees of The Wilthorpe on Huddersfield Road. Michael and Tina Farnsworth, both 42, ran the pub between April and September last year. They quit for a number of reasons and the pub was run by a management company for about 12 months. The couple have decided to give it another go after negotiating more favourable terms. The pub was run between 1988 and 2002 by the parents of Michael, who grew up in Royston.

INQUEST GIVES MOTHER RELIEF AFTER 13 YEARS THE bereaved mother of a drowned diver is relieved her ordeal is over after an inquest was held – 13 years after her son’s death. Iris Molyneux has vowed to ‘put to bed’ any remaining questions she has about the circumstances of her son, Stephen Pickering’s, death. Stephen was part of a team exploring a sunken World War One ship in August 1997 when he got in trouble. His body was not found until November last year. A coroner concluded the

death was accidental. “The verdict is what I knew it would be,” said Iris, 78, of Shroggs Head Close, Darfield. She is not satisfied the whole truth came out at the inquest last week but said she will move on. “I have my own thoughts as to what happened but I have to put them to bed now. I have had this going on for nearly 14 years. “I have spent so much time and money investigat- At rest: Stephen Pickering. ing this. At least it’s all finbut ruled there was nothished.” ing suspicious. The coroner was told of The inquest was told Mrs Molyneux’s concerns Stephen, 41, was using new, heavier gas cylinders. Fellow divers urged him to ditch his weight belt but one colleague said he liked being heavily weighted

because it helped him work better. One of the divers on board the Marja with Stephen said he became distressed after losing his face mask. A replacement was thrown in, followed by a rope for Stephen to grab but he failed to make it to either. Fellow diver Jeremy Lovell said: “He tried to grab for it and that’s the last I saw of him.” A distress call was made and a helicopter and two naval warships helped the search but Stephen could not be found. His remains were cremated and his ashes were buried on the sea bed off the Yorkshire coast by Mrs Molyneux in May.

Dennis Nyingi is studying for a degree at the University Campus Barnsley. He has just started the second year of his Journalism and Media Production, FdA. He tells us: “My decision to undertake the course was due to the fact that it was offered in Barnsley, my home town. “The lectures on my course have involved learning about the different areas in Journalism and Media Production such a radio, film and journalistic writing skills. “At this moment in time I am yearning to be a sports journalist, and as a result the information I have gained so far through the course has been steering me closer and closer to my dream. “So far my experience at the University Campus Barnsley has been fabulous, since I have had a chance to meet with many educated people and peers, who have turned out to be people with great personalities.”

Town’s blooms are marvellous, say judges Walkers raise cash BY MIKE COTTON BARNSLEY’s flowers have power. Judges of the Yorkshire in Bloom competition gave the town 11 awards.

In bloom: Elsecar Park gardener Ian Nicholls tending to the flower beds.

They praised the flower beds outside the town hall and hanging baskets around the borough. They granted a ‘silver gilt’ in the city category and there were gold medals for Cannon Hall Gardens, Elsecar Park and Barnsley Hospice. In the Youth Enterprise Award, Keresforth Primary School received silver gilt and Wilthorpe Junior School got silver. The Limes golf course won silver gilt in the Business Premises category and Tankersley Manor received silver gilt in the Yorkshire Tourist Board Hotels section. A council spokesman said: “This recognises another excellent performance by Barnsley. Congratulations to all the entrants and thanks to everyone who participated and helped to support Barnsley in Bloom.”

MORE than 50 walkers took part in the Alzheimer’s Society’s annual memory walk at Worsbrough Mill. Grandparents, parents and children completed the two-mile course raising £500 to help support people with dementia and their carers. Anne Simmons from Barnsley Alzheimer’s Society said the bad

weather did not dampen spirits: “Despite the forecast the weather wasn’t too bad on the day and it was great to have so many local people of all ages turn up to take part in the memory walk. “There are nearly 3,000 people with dementia in Barnsley and the money raised will ensure they can access essential services in the borough.”

Former Mayoress dies, 87 A FORMER Mayoress of Barnsley Muriel Wroe has died. Muriel, 87, died at home on Regent Street in Hoyland Common. She leaves a husband, former councillor Clarence, stepchildren Robert and Yvonne, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Muriel, an only child, was born in 1923 and always lived in the Hoyland and Hoyland Common areas. She met Clarence out dancing and they

married in 1970. He was her second husband. The couple enjoyed dancing three or four times a week, mostly at Wortley Hall, in the 1980s and 1990s. Coun Wroe became Mayor of Barnsley in 1995 to 1996 and Muriel attended various functions and civic events. For the last 20 years or so she was a housewife. The funeral was on Monday at St Peter’s Church, Hoyland, followed by cremation at Ardsley.

OLD HEDGE MEETS NEW £28M ALC A super-school at Carlton is nearing completion. Adam Civico joined students to look around. THE ancient and the modern exist side-byside at the new Carlton Advanced Learning Centre. The three-storey school has been built off Royston Lane, Carlton. Workers are busy fitting the interior and when the school opens to 1,100

pupils in January it will feature a lecture theatre, computer suites and a construction centre. It’s no surprise that headteacher Sue Hamby says it will be ‘state of the art’. But running through the site is Cronkhill Lane, an ancient route with a protected hedgerow that

must be preserved. This week tree surgeons were trimming the hedges in preparation for laying them. Once completed, this traditional hedgerow will be conspicuous in its contrast to the building that towers over it. “It’s nice to have it. It will be used for environmental studies,” says governors’ chairman Allan Child. Royston Coun Graham Kyte was shown around the site on Tuesday. “It’s marvellous that it will be preserved,” he said. “It’s unique.” Back in the building there is a lot of work to be done, but students are being shown around to get a idea of what the school will be like. According to Jodie McDougall, 15, a prefect at Edward Sheerien, it is reminiscent of something on American television shows. She will finish her GCSEs at the new centre. “It reminds me of 90210 and stuff like that off the television. It’s impressive

State of the art: Year 11 prefects from Edward Sheerien School visit Carlton ALC but I think it could be more colourful. I do like the big classrooms. “I think I’ll enjoy it too much and not want to leave after four months.” Schoolmate Chloe Royston, 15, added: “It’s more than I expected. It will take us a while to get around but it’s amazing. I thought it would disrupt our GCSEs but now I don’t think it will.” The main entrance opens into a large atrium. Steps lead down to a stage and there will be a ‘stop

and grab’ bar selling sandwiches and snacks. There will be open computer suites, wellequipped craft and cookery rooms and science labs. Mr Child says: “The building means we can present tremendous opportunities to the young people in school but also to the wider community. We are focussing very much on it being a community college.” Mrs Hamby adds: “We cannot wait to get into the

new building. The sports facilities are first class, up to national standards and we haven’t had that before. “There will be more flexibility for teaching with different size rooms and a lecture area and specialist rooms in construction that we have not had before.” When it opens, students from Royston High and Edward Sheerien schools will come together – prompting concern about rivalries. Jodie says:

“Royston and Edward Sheerien pupils are not going to get on civilly. They should put police on every door.” Those in charge don’t anticipate major problems. St Helen’s Coun Roy Butterwood hopes the change will unite the communities. “There always seems to have been a divide between Athersley, New Lodge and Royston estates. This will integrate them.”

Tudor relics to go on show BY IAN THOMPSON EXQUISITE pieces of Tudor pottery and glass found at Monk Bretton Priory are to go on show at Experience Barnsley, the museum opening at Barnsley Town Hall next year. The items include dark brown pottery with a creamy yellow pattern, known as Cistercianware, and glass made in Venice and imported from Germany in the 16th century. Archaeologists dug up the items from the remains of a manor house built for a member of one of the country’s richest Tudor families. George Talbot, a jailor of Mary Queen of Scots, bought a plot of land and had the home built in about 1580 for his son, Henry. Christine Rawson, director of Wath-based Elmet Archaeological Services Ltd which supported the month-long dig, said: “The Talbots had a good eye for a bargain. “They were able to buy a plot of land and build a manor house at a small price. The area around Monk Bretton Priory was beautiful and highly sought after.”

Injured squaddies support charity event INJURED Barnsley soldiers will be among the guests of honour at a fund-raising concert for armed forces’ heroes. A night of cabaret is being organised at Highstone Road WMC by the Airborne Comrades’ Association. It will raise money to support squaddies with post-traumatic stress disorder and the military gardeners’

campaign, that teaches veterans horticulture to help them recover from trauma. ACA member Tony Sykes, of Clifton Avenue, Athersley, formerly of Two Para Regiment, is helping organise the concert. He said: “We will have some soldiers from Barnsley and some from surrounding areas who have been to Iraq and Afghanistan.

They will be in uniform meeting people.” The show is on Saturday at 7pm. A display will be put on in the afternoon outside the club with a Second World War jeep, motorbike and machine gun nest. For tickets contact the club on 281713 or 770739.

I Ice dancer: Elise Nicole Gough has been awarded a grant from the Dickie Bird Foundation.

GRANT TO HELPELISE GET HER SKATES ON BY MIKE COTTON A YOUNG ice skater has been awarded £400 by the Dickie Bird Foundation. Elise Nicole Gough, nine, of Bentley Close, Monk Bretton, will spend the money on ice skates and clothing to see her through various competitions. She has already won numerous trophies and spends about eight hours a week training at Sheffield. Sport runs in her family – her uncle is former Yorkshire and England cricketer

Darren Gough. Dickie Bird set up his foundation in 2004 to help young people ‘fulfil their sporting dreams’. He says he can remember how difficult it was to afford luxuries like football and cricket boots. He said: “Of all the things I achieved in my career, it is the opportunity to give something back through my foundation that gives me the greatest pleasure. “I want children to enjoy sport, and not spend all their time on street corners or looking at computers.”
