PLAN FOR CREDIT UNION CURRENCY TO SPEND IN TOWN BY KATE PICKLES BARNSLEY Credit Union wants to introduce its own currency for members to use in shops in the town centre. The Credit Union ‘pound’ would be redeemed in stores signed up to the scheme giving customers a discount on certain products. Shoppers would show their membership card to the proprietor, like a student card, in order to get the special offer. “I’ve got to talk to the town centre manager to see if anyone is interested but I think it would be a way of keeping Barnsley vibrant and busy,” said chief executive, Ian Guest. “It would mean people spending the money in Barnsley because it’s better value and that way the money stays local.” A similar idea has been successfully piloted by the Goldthorpe

Advertiser’s Announcement

‘It would mean people spending the money in Barnsley because it’s better value and that way the money stays local’ branch of the financial Co-operative where people were given small loans to buy school uniforms. “We gave nearly 600 loans for school uniforms and more than 1,500 children benefited from that so we know the demand for such schemes is there,” he said. “The school uniform shop in Goldthorpe offered an additional ten per cent discount and that kept the money local which is what we’re about. “That’s why I think the Credit Union pound is worth a go if we can get shops on board.” Membership of Barnsley’s Credit Union has increased by 160 members a month making it the third biggest in England.

A new office has been opened in Wombwell and more staff have been employed at the Barnsley and Goldthorpe branches to meet demand. It has introduced a new debit card facility for people who would not usually use banks or have difficulty accessing bank services. “We are exceedingly busy and the demand is even more now than this time last year. “We have got 5.6 per cent of the population as members but we estimate 22 per cent could use our services so there is still a long way to go. It’s coming up to the busiest period in the build up to Christmas so it’s likely our membership will continue to rise.”

Lovely blooms: Garden champ Les Hunter of Cawthorne.

Why Les has flower power BY KATIA HARSTON MEET Barnsley’s chrysanthemum king, Les Hunter. The former miner, 74, has set a new record after winning national and northern flower championships two years in a row. He claimed the chrysanthemum crowns with his prize vases of Cawthorne sprays, a variety he created and named after his home village.

Barnsley NHS Stop Smoking Service Dan Sharp Stop Smoking Journey I stopped smoking two years ago now, in August 2008. I heard about the Stop Smoking Service through the adverts in the Chronicle, and my partner also works for the NHS, so she was encouraging me to stop smoking as well. I was smoking on average around 20 cigarettes per day, I didn’t really have any health problems, apart from the smokers cough on a morning. The Stop Smoking Service were really supportive and it was really nice to come into the service every week to have that honest, open conversation and with someone who never judged you for it. Ultimately they helped me to be true to

myself, which helped me achieve my goal. I would recommend the service to anyone who is trying to quit smoking. When I started to cut down on the cigarettes, I needed something to fill my evenings. I started running on an evening, short distances at first, but now I am running six miles, five to six times a week. I’ve done a number of challenges, including riding the Trans Pennine Trail, both Three Peaks challenges, half marathons and loads of walks in between. I am currently training for a 5 day, 192 mile Coast to Coast walk. Whilst I was giving up smoking, I had my peaks and troughs, just like everyone

does and it took me about four to five months to get rid off the ‘real’ cravings. I would really like to encourage people to give up smoking, and highlight that there is life after smoking and it’s imperrative to fill that gap with something. I will shortly be doing the Wainright, 192 mile Coast to Coast walk for Marie Curie Cancer and if you would like to sponsor me please visit www.justgiving.com/dannysharp CONTACT THE STOP SMOKING SERVICE ON 01226 737077 FOR AN APPOINTMENT AND BRING THIS VOUCHER IN WITH YOU.

Les, of Orchard Terrace, started preparing for the two shows in November. “I have no secrets even though people seem to think I do. I’ve been growing them a long time that’s all so I’ve got this class down to a tee and I know what judges look for.” Despite months of preparation, Les was shocked at his double victory. “I never expected it this year,” he said. “It’s a terrific achievement to do it two years on the trot.”

Plan for surgery at Priory Campus A NEW block that will include a GP surgery and pharmacy will be built at the Priory Campus if plans are approved. Proposals were submitted to the council by Mark Nicholson. They include extension and redevelopment of the current building and a new annex to include business units, a cultural centre and meeting rooms. It will also include a150-space car park with access off Rotherham Road. The application states that the proposed annex follows the same vision as Will Alsop’s ‘Barnsley Masterplan’ designed in 2003. The masterplan showed how Barnsley could be transformed into a modern ‘walled Tuscan hill town’. His ideas included beaming a halo of light 60ft into the air and surrounding the town hall with a ‘living wall’ of shops and offices. A Priory Campus spokesman said: “While the site of Priory Campus sits beyond the proposed ‘wall’, it does form part of one of its surrounding communities.”

Box to answer locals’ prayers A PRAYER box for people not comfortable with going to church will be put in Mapplewell and Staincross village hall. Clergy at St John’s Church in Staincross came up with the idea as a way of reaching out to the wider community. Rev Michael Scholey from the church said a box will be put in the village hall, on Darton Lane, and one outside the church on Greenside. “We have now got these little boxes so people can write down their prayers and put them in there,” he said. “It’s for those who have prayer needs but maybe do not feel comfortable going to church, or cannot get there. “What will happen then is myself and the two other clergy who meet on Wednesday nights will read the prayers each week. It’s important to point out everything will be kept confidential, the boxes are secure, and the prayers will be destroyed once we have read them.” The boxes will be available to use from Thursday.

ARSON GUTS COMMUNITY CLUBHOUSE BY KATIA HARSTON VANDALS have targeted Darton Cricket Club trashing the community clubhouse and setting it on fire. It is thought to have happened last Monday night. A member of the public walking on Longfields Park saw the condition of the clubhouse and contacted officials. Club secretary David Wilson said vandals got into the building through the roof and it’s not yet known how much it will cost to repair the damage done. “Whoever it is, has smashed the glasses and light fittings, tipped chairs and tables over and then tried to set the whole place on fire by starting two separate fires in the building,” said David. “They’ve made a real mess of it.” It isn’t the first time the clubhouse has been targeted and David said it has been broken into several times this year. “Before, they basically took as much beer as they could carry and there was no actual damage done. “At a guess, if I was a betting man, I would say it’s the same people.” David said the break-in comes days after he learned crime is at its lowest

in Darton for 21 years. He added: “Whoever came up with this should come and look at our clubhouse, it tells a very different story. “Luckily for us this has happened at the end of the cricket season but it is so dispiriting and you feel so powerless. “We have put an insurance claim in and I am sure we will be up and running for the next season. It’s the frustration of it all that is getting to me.” The club has already spent more than £1,000 on razor wire and anti-climbing paint to use as deterrents but it does not have an endless pot of cash to use to prevent future break-ins. One man, whose son is a member of the junior cricket team, said the costs of running a cricket club are ‘astronomical’ and mindless acts of vandalism like this ‘puts a nail in the coffin’. He added: “Whoever has done this, I don’t think they realise how important it is to the community, about 50 kids go there on the different junior teams. “I just hope they catch the idiots.” A spokesman for the police said it is investigating the incident. She added: “At present there are no suspects and we have been working closely with the cricket club.”

HIGHWAYS STAFF FACE LAYOFFS HUNDREDS more council staff have been called to meetings to inform them that redundancies are likely in their department. In a series of summits Darren Richardson, head of highways and engineering, told workers they would be put on 90-day consultation next month. The move is necessary because more than 100 of his 300-strong department are likely to be made redundant, said unions. It is a process that has to be followed when large numbers of staff face losing their jobs. Lee Parkinson is convenor for the GMB union and represents many of the staff affected. He said it was expected that the ‘HR1’ notices would be issued early next month, but there was still time for that to change. He said the union was waiting for the notice before any decisions on how to react to it would be taken. The council has a statutory requirement to issue an HR1 notice when redundancies are expected. Council leader Steve Houghton said it did not mean staff in the highways department had been given redundancy notices. He said that the HR1 notice affected the whole council. “There is nothing particular going on in highways, the meetings called were to inform staff of what will be happening. “When the notice is issued we will have 90 days to negotiate with the unions and see if they have any alternatives to the

‘We are three months away from any redundancy notices going out, other than the home carers’ redundancy process. “After that period, at the beginning of January, we will then have to issue redundancy notices. “We are three months away from any redundancy notices going out, other than the home carers.” While it was not known exactly where the axe would fall, it was likely to be across the council. “We won’t know the detail until December or January. “There will be a special budget meeting of the council on January 6.” A council spokesman, said: “This is just one of a great many and growing number of meetings taking place with employees, and with the trade unions in attendance, as the council addresses the government cuts we are facing. “Discussions are ongoing and once we are in a position to update the media, we will do – after we have updated our employees.” The HR1 notice is going to be issued on Friday, October 8, said Coun Houghton.

Students compare meerkats FOUR meerkats have swapped the desert for Worsbrough. They are normally found in the Kalahari, Botswana, or in South Africa but Wigfield Farm has added them to its menagerie. They have settled in to a desert enclosure created by students at the Barnsley College farm over the summer. Those who helped were Sophie Badger, 17, Sammy Woodward, 19, Hayley Edward, 18, Carolanne Grundy, 20 and Jessica Budd, 23. Sophie said: “We came in, built a wall and a rest area for them and put the sand down.” Different groups of students take turns to look after the animals – three brothers and an unrelated female that cost about £2,500. Carolanne said: “It’s unusual to work with them. Hopefully it is a good attraction for the public.” Farm supervisor Liz Squires said the meerkats are fed baby mice, locusts, crickets, meal worms and

PET SERVICE: ‘BRING ALL YOUR CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL’ BY KATE PICKLES CATS, dogs, rabbits and other animals will form the congregation at a church service for pets. Rev Mark Poskitt has organised the pet service in Locke Park. He will take his dog Toby and

hopes the park will be full of families and pets. “The idea is so people can bring their pets along for a short service and blessing,” he said. “It ties in with the feast of St Francis who had a passion for all things created, especially animals and wildlife. “I thought it would be a good

way of including the community in something outside the church grounds to say thank you for all our pets and pray for their wellbeing.” The service will be on Sunday at 3pm. Anyone who wants information can call the vicarage on 207140.
