FAMILY THEME AHEAD OF WALK IT’S a family affair... Carmen McCourt as Uncle Fester and Moira Tombs as Gomez from the Addams Family get into character ahead of a charity walk. The walk, on September 19, between Worsbrough and Elsecar reservoirs has a family theme. As well as the Addams Family it is thought the Simpsons and the Von Trapps will be taking part. Rev Alison Lamb, of St Mary’s, Worsbrough, and Holy Trinity, Elsecar, will be dressing as a member of the Holy family. Moira said the family theme was chosen as the support of family and friends is important. “Not only are we aiming to raise funds so those in crisis can receive the care and support they need, but we’re hoping, in a light-hearted way, to emphasise the need for support structures for emotionally vulnerable people.” The seven-mile walk takes in a lap of each reservoir, although people can do as little of the route as they like. Walkers are seeking sponsorship for the Maytree charity which offers a sanctuary for people in suicidal crisis. It coincides with World Suicide Prevention Day.

Write the baby’s name and address on the back of the photograph and enclose a SAE if you
would like the picture returned. We also accept email entries but digital photographs need to be of good quality and size or can’t be used. Email John Barton at email@example.com All entries will feature in our Baby of the Year 2009 supplement on Friday, October 16. The closing date for entries is 5pm on Thursday, October 8. Barnsley Stop Smoking Service 10th Anniversary Barnsley NHS Stop Smoking Service is celebrating its 10th anniversary in October this year. If you attended the service in the early years and would be prepared to share some of your experiences of stopping smoking with the service, please contact Zoe Styring 01226 737077, we would like to hear from you. Amanda Campling has recently attended the service at Eldon Street and says, “I have been successfully quit now for five months. I started smoking on and off when I was 14 years old. I smoked until I became pregnant with my first child and then I stopped, but then I started smoking again, until I became pregnant again. It went that way until I had my sixth child. I stopped for a couple of years after I had my last child, but then started smoking again. “My main motivation for quitting was health reasons. My family and friends were so supportive through the quitting period, they were absolutely fantastic. My mum would phone me and say how proud she was of me. “I went to see my own doctor about giving up
smoking, but the nurse was overbooked. It just happened to be a Wednesday and the nurse said that the Quit Shop has late night openings on a Wednesday, so I got in the car and went straight there. I just did it straight away. The service was brilliant, I couldn't have done it without them. They are fantastic people and I would recommend the service to anyone who wants to quit smoking. They give therapy, they talk to you, they give out vouchers for Slimming World or Barnsley Premier Leisure (BPL). I went for the Slimming World vouchers, which is going really well, I've lost a stone and a half so far and I am determined to keep going. “It was really hard to quit, but I just had to keep thinking about what my doctors were telling me, and my kids told me that they didn't want to lose me or see me sick. Now that I have quit, I feel I can achieve anything. “I would advise people to quit as soon as they can and use the service, because smoking will take their lives if they don't stop.”
Disused graveyard to be transformed The group has been promised more than £15,000 towards the project from WREN, which hands out grants funded by landfill tax. But to qualify for the funding, the group has to raise its own ‘match funding’.

has applied for funding to improve the paths, replace damaged benches and add hanging baskets. Doreen Cureton, a member of the Central Conservation Residents’ Association, said: “We want to spruce it up and make it a nice place for people to sit and enjoy, or to reflect.”
A DISUSED graveyard in the town centre is to be refurbished and renamed ‘Peace Gardens’. The Churchfields site opposite the police station has not been used for more than 100 years. The council has been responsible for maintenance since the mid1970s, but now a group of volunteers

Backing the campaign: Musical director Mike Ryal who has received a kidney transplant. Picture: Jamie Lorriman
MIKE LENDS NAME TO ORGAN DRIVE BY KATE PICKLES A MUSICAL director from Barnsley, who had a kidney transplant last year, is supporting a campaign encouraging people to become organ donors. Mike Ryal spent 14 years on dialysis before undergoing a successful transplant operation at the Northern General, Sheffield, last July. He had been removed from the transplant register after two veins collapsed but it took just four days to find him a match and complete the operation. Now Mike, 63, of St Andrew’s Drive, Darton, is supporting the ‘Gift of Life’ event to dispel the myths surrounding organ donation and transplants. “Many people have misconceptions about organ donation and events like this are really helpful in quashing some of those myths,” he said.
“Receiving my kidney transplant gave me back my life and I treasure the gift every day. “Anyone could one day help someone like me and going to this event is a really good way to find out more.” Experts from renal services and the clinical champion for organ donation will give talks and there will be stalls at the Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield, on Tuesday. Clinical director Dr William McKane said he hoped it would help people understand the issues surrounding organ donation. “Transplants are one of the most miraculous achievements of modern medicine,” he said. “But they depend entirely on the generosity of donors and their families who are willing to make this lifesaving or lifeenhancing gift to others.” To book a place call Jane Pellegrina on 01142 714322.

The Wilthorpe Crescent home has solar panels, high-tech ventilation and high-efficiency insulation. It was opened this week by Mayor coun John Parkinson. About £30,000 has been spent on 24 energy-efficient modifications, most of which were paid for by Inspace, the contractor which performs maintenance for Berneslai Homes. The firm will use it as an example to other housing bodies around the country. General manager Dave Coldwell said: “Tackling energy efficiency on older housing stock will become a priority and companies like Inspace will have to show how this can be done affordably. “We want this to be the template to show how they can achieve homes with A-Rated performance.
140-142 Pogmoor Road, Pogmoor, Barnsley, S75 2DX.
“We will take the learning here and turn it into an affordable and model for across the country as this issue becomes higher on the list of priorities.” The house has been made airtight to stop energy escaping, and a high-tech ventilation system stops a build up of moisture. There is also solar-powered hot water, an efficient shower, high-performance double glazing, extra-thick loft insulation, cavity wall insulation, insulating boards fitted inside the walls under the plaster, an ‘A-rated’ condensing boiler, and an IT workstation so residents could work from home rather than travel to work. Coun Jim Smith said he hoped similar work could be done on other Barnsley homes: “It is a tremendous initiative and I’m sure there’ll be a good deal of this we can pick up and utilise across Barnsley.”

Surprising: The Greek island of Kos is not all bars and beaches — the Asklepeion is home to concerts and cultural events. by visitors who take a little time to look beyond the tourist traps. You can stroll along the battlements of the Fortress of the Knights of St John overlooking the harbour, or wander across Platoa Eleftherfas (Freedon Square), where Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, sat to pass on his wisdom. There is also the Asklepeion, the ancient theatre dedicated to the Greek god of healing, which has been restored
and its tiered stone seats are now used for everything from traditional music and dance to rock concerts. It is always worth checking with the Kos tourist office to see what’s on. If you like nightlife, there is plenty on offer in Kos Town to keep you entertained every night of the week, with many clubs. While Kos is not particularly known as a shopping paradise, if you are looking for a bargain take
a one-day excursion to nearby Bodrum on the Turkish coast. Here you will find plenty of shopping, with the emphasis on leather goods, carpets, clothing, and rich, sweet Turkish pastries and sweets. Many visitors, however, will just want to chill out in a local taverna on the harbour front with a cold beer or ouzo, a plate of freshly caught local fish, and just watch the world pass by.

Kitting out your children for the new school year needn’t break the budget now there’s a great range of affordable school gear available at supermarkets and high street favourites. KEEP OUT THE CHILL THIS AUTUMN, WRAP UP WARM WITH the warm weather coming to an end it’s time to pack away the summer wardrobe and concentrate on fashion trends for the colder months. Key pieces for ladies this autumn and winter include leggings, ripped denim and lots of dresses.
Next’s autumn winter 2009 collection is bursting with fashionable pieces to cover all trends and occasions. Its Heritage range combines traditional fabrics and quirky florals to create an organic and individual feel that radiates classic British eccentricity. Meanwhile, the Metropolis col-
lection uses houndstooth prints, geometric patterns and a body con silhouette to provide a fashionable edge to dresses, skirts and outerwear. Two main trends for autumn winter 09 are bright, acid colours and rock-chic — Next has these looks well and truly covered in its Runaway and Rock Royalty collections.
Fashion forward and directional, the Runaway collection offers stunning dresses in dramatic and pulsating colours and prints, guaranteed to grab attention on a night out, while Rock Royalty is perfect daytime wear with sequins, skinny jeans, funky Tshirts and print scarfs.

GET OUT INTO THE GARDEN THIS AUTUMN GARDENING gives you the ideal opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors — right on your doorstep. You don’t need to travel, you don’t need to plan, you don’t even need to be kitted out with special equipment. You simply step outside the back door and you’re ready to begin. But like all outdoor activities, there are a host of accessories that can make enjoying your hobby more convenient, more comfortable — and less vulnerable to our very changeable weather. When you’re gardening the chances are you’ll be in the privacy of your own backyard and nobody will take much notice of your choice of clothing. You don’t need to make a fashion statement — and unlike walking or cycling, designer gear has made little impact on the world of gardening. But you do need to be comfortable, warm and dry, so a little investment in appropriate gear is well worthwhile. Footwear comes first. Whatever the weather, you’ll be exposed to mud and dirt — and you don’t want to ruin your best shoes. The traditional footwear
favourite is the good old Wellington boot because it keeps out the wet, is suitable for all weather and can be purchased at a reasonable price. While a cheap pair may be fine for the occasional gardener, if your hobby is serious or you are likely to walk miles down muddy tracks, it is worth investing more for the extra comfort. Since the welly was invented, footwear has become more sophisticated and most garden centres now offer an extensive choice. Waterproof PVC ankle boots are very popular as they offer greater flexibility, but the current favourite is the garden clog. Based on the Dutch clog design but made from the same material as Wellington boots, they are easy to slip on — and if you get a good pair the linings can be taken out for cleaning. Next on the shopping list should be a good pair of gloves, with a strong, leather or woven fabric palm and heavy-duty back to protect your hands from prickly thorns or other sharp objects. Not only will they make gardening cleaner and more comfortable, they will also protect you from cuts.
Prickly situation: Pruning roses calls for good, sturdy gardening gloves.

Autumn Magazine MIGRAINE ACTION LAUNCHES AID TO SUPPORT CHILDREN NATIONAL charity, Migraine Action, is launching a range of new resources during Migraine Awareness Week, between Sunday September 6 to Saturday September 12, to help
support millions of children during the new school year. The symptoms of migraine in children can be very different to those in adults: abdominal pain, nausea and/or vomiting, a sensitivity to light,
sound or smell, confusion, and a lack of attention are all common. Children may not experience a headache, or this may only be mild. As a result, the condition can go unrecognised or even be thought of as bad
behaviour. Migraine Action often receives an increased number of calls to its helpline from worried parents in September as children begin to experience migraines for the first time: stress or

changes to routine as children start or move school can be enough to trigger attacks. To offer support to young migraineurs as a new school year begins, Migraine Action is launching free information packs in three age categories: eight to ten years, 11 to 13 years, and 14 to 17 years. Packs include a detailed booklet, migraine diary sheets, and for younger migraineurs, a migraine game to help them educate their friends. Information packs for parents, teachers, and school nurses have also been produced. Three age-specific websites for young migraineurs are also being launched during the week. These give information on the signs and symptoms of migraine, details of possible triggers, lifestyle tips and young migraineurs the opportunity to share their experiences to help others affected. All three websites can be accessed via www.migraine.org.uk/you ngmigraineurs Lee Tomkins, director of Migraine Action, said:
Painful problem: Stress or changes as children start school can trigger migraine attacks. “Parents often contact us feeling very worried and frustrated. “They may be in need of information and advice, they may have experienced challenges in getting a diagnosis for their child, or they may be facing a lack of understanding from others – the impact on family life can be immense. “We have created these new resources in response to feedback from parents, children, teachers and healthcare professionals. “Children can miss a lot of school because of migraine, but often this
doesn’t need to be the case. “By helping people to understand the condition, its causes, and by making them aware of some simple ways they may be able to help reduce a child’s chances of an attack, we hope to lessen the impact that migraine has on the lives millions of children.” For further information, or to order free copies of the new resources from Migraine Action, contact 0116 275 8317, email firstname.lastname@example.org or visit the website at www.migraine.org.uk/ youngmigraineurs

WHY PARENTS ARE HIT BY RECESSION NEW research has revealed almost half of parents are experiencing physical signs of stress due to the recession, with two thirds worrying about paying the weekly food bill. The recession has also taken its toll on the lifestyle of parents with half of those stressed admitting to eating badly, a quarter smoking more and a quarter drinking more than six months ago. Although the research, from Post Office Insurance, questioned all parents on any changes to their stress levels as a result of their financial situation, mums in particular revealed a number of symptoms of stress. Forty per cent are experiencing sleep disturbance, while 30 per cent are suffering from increased headaches and over half say they have started to eat badly. Given these symptoms it is unsurprising that over half of parents have become more worried because of the recession.
In addition to being concerned about paying for the weekly food bill, 64 per cent are worried about paying monthly bills such as the utilities, rent or mortgage repayments. When it comes to employment, it is the dads who worry the most with 48 per cent concerned about losing their job compared to 17 per cent of mums. Duncan Caesar-Gordon, head of protection products at the Post Office, said: “Understandably, the recession has got everyone keeping an eye on their finances, but unfortunately the downturn has caused stress for millions. “If people are worried about money they should speak to their bank or Citizens’ Advice Bureau and should try and avoid things that could be detrimental their health.”
Stress: The recession is taking its toll on parents.

‘Shape is what matters’ ACCORDING to a new report, 60 per cent of British women say they are actually ‘fruit-shaped’ apple and pears but over two thirds of the nation are desperate for the classic Marilyn Monroe-esque hourglass figure. In a recent study, it was found that the ultimate slimming goal for women is no longer being the ‘Perfect Ten’ but to get a curvy hour-glass shape. Regardless of whether they were 25 or 55, the hour-glass figure personified by the Nigella Lawson resolutely remains the body shape the majority of women aspire to. In fact, just seven per cent yearned for the boyish and shapeless body made

famous by the likes of Twiggy and Kate Moss. With over 35 per cent of the nation’s women confessing they are appleshaped — a shape characterised by an undefined waist — and just 13 per cent possessing an enviable hourglass figure, it
seems shape not size is what matters most to women these days. While Nigella topped the list, Dame Helen Mirren was voted the second biggest ‘body booster’ and Dame Judi Dench came in third.

CHILDREN FLOURISHING AT NURSERY THE Sandpit Nursery located in the heart of Barnsley on Pitt Street, is a well established setting, which has been running successfully for six years. The continued success of the nursery has been achieved by a committed and professional team of staff, who are always striving to make the nursery environment a warm, caring, safe and highly stimulating centre for children to play and learn. Owner Amanda Sande-
rson, says the ongoing success is due to the strong managment team’s forward thinking. “We always reflect on and update current practice, always putting into place new guidelines, initiatives and ideas which progress the nursery provision. “A lot of the changes and developments occur as a result of really taking the time to listen to what the children and families, who use the setting really want from us as a service – then putting them in place to
support their individual needs.” Since opening in 2003 the nursery has undergone three Ofsted inspections, in which it has always achieved highly, gaining a ‘Good’ grade on each inspection. Ofsted quotes from The Sandpit’s latest report completed November 6th 2008 include: “Children feel very secure and have good self-esteem. “They are excited by the range of interesting activities where they can learn about themselves, explore differences, and confidently initiate their own play.” “They are making good progress in their learning in a supportive and stimulating environment.” “The wide range of toys and resources enable children to enjoy their learning. “All activities are age appropriate and give the children lots of enjoyment and pleasure.” As well as receiving excellent Ofsted reports, the nursery has been awarded Quality Assurance from the National Day Nurseries Association. This is an ongoing development scheme that monitors nurseries ensuring that they are achieving to the highest level. The Sandpit as a setting is always striving to provide the best possible service and happily goes out of its way to meet families’ needs. The nursery offers two large baby rooms, one for those babies who aren’t yet mobile and the other for those who are.
This allows the nursery to better attend the needs of each child in their development. The nursery and preschool rooms, are bright and spacious and have an abundance of toys and educational items, which are all used to encourage children to have fun and learn. A full-time chef prepares breakfast, lunch, tea and snacks for the children that are nutritious, healthy and balanced. The Sandpit Nursery has a glowing reputation as being one of the best nurseries in Barnsley, with many of the families who use the setting, finding out about it from excellent rec- Colourful: The Sandpit Nursery’s Katie Thompson supervises an art session with Joel Ball, Dylan Parkin and Amanda Griffiths. FLORENCE IS PERFECT FOR A CITY BREAK BIRTHPLACE of the Renaissance, Florence has one of the richest cultural and artistic legacies in the world and is perfect for a city break at any time of the year. The best time to visit Florence is in the low season, from April to June or September to December, when the weather is usually good, prices are lower and there are fewer tourists. You can walk from one end of this vibrant, compact living museum in about 30 minutes, but it will take much longer because there is so much to see. Any visitor must allow plenty of time for leisurely visits to the superb Uffizi Gallery, which is home to Italy’s most important art collection including Botticelli's Birth of Venus. Make sure that you visit the Accademia Gallery as early as possible to avoid the crowds for the best view of Michelangelo’s David and the Palatine Gallery is home to many originals by Rubens, Botticelli and Titian. There are many more great museums, but you cannot miss the splendid Palazzo Vecchio, or taking a stroll along the historic Ponte Vecchio bridge across the River Arno. Other must-see sights include the
Duoma and Baptistry, Pitti Palace and the Royal Apartments of the Medicci as well as the Boboli Gardens. The climb to the top of the Campanile is also worth the effort for an unforgettable panoramic view of the city. Virtually all the museums close on Sunday afternoon and Monday. Italy is famous for its style, so shopping is a must for any visitor. Shops in Florence are usually open from 9am to 7pm Monday to Saturday, though most close for lunch.
Classic: There is so much to see and do in Florence that it will be hard to fit it all in on a single short break.

Quality Italian fashion can be found along the Via della Vigna Nuova, while the area around the Ponte Vecchio is famous for hand-crafted jewellery. Other good buys include ceramics or leather goods, which can be found in the Santa Croce area of the city or in the lively San Lorenzo market, which operates most days. There is so much to do in Florence you might think it is hard to relax, but don’t worry, you can always return!

blooms, making an impressive display. Amaryllis have long been popular plants as they flower easily. There are countless varieties available of this native of central and south America. Some are slightly scented, particularly the white flowers. Apple Blossom is a sweet fragrance and has tones of pink and white. Popular varieties are Red Lion (red) and Orange Sovereign (dark orange). If you would like something a little different from the usual trumpetlike blooms, look for the double-flowered Amaryllis Blossom Peacock variety, which has striking flowers that are white striped and edged in red. The Amaryllis Papilio has extraordinarily beautiful maroon-and-white

flowers, which are ideal indoors or in a conservatory. A fairly new variety making an impression is the Amarlyis La Paz. This is a beautiful and unusual variety, with delicate-looking cream and red flowers quite unlike traditional varieties. Plant the giant bulbs in late September, keep in a cool room, such as a conservatory, and within six to eight weeks two or more flower spikes will develop and explode into bloom. If you plant bulbs towards the end of September or early October, you should be rewarded with a collection of flowers around Christmas. Before planting in a peatfree potting compost, soak the base and roots of the bulb in lukewarm water for a few hours. The large bulb should be buried up to its neck in the potting compost, being careful not to damage the roots. Press the compost down firmly to set the bulb securely in place after planting. Place the pot in a warm place with direct light since heat is necessary for the development of the stems. The ideal temperature is 20C (68F) and water sparingly until the stem appears, then, as the bud

and leaves appear, gradually water more. The stem will grow rapidly once started and bulbs will flower in seven to ten weeks as a general rule. Naturally, in winter the flowering time will be longer than in spring so plan your planting schedule between October and April with this in mind. To achieve continuous blooms, plant at fortnightly intervals for stunning colour throughout the winter months. After the amaryllis has stopped flowering, it can be saved to flower again. Cut the old flowers from the stem after flowering, and when the stem starts to sag, cut it right back to the top of the bulb. Continue to water and feed with weak liquid feed as normal all summer, or for at least five to six

months, allowing the leaves to fully develop and grow. When the leaves begin to yellow, which normally occurs in the early autumn, cut the leaves back to about six centimetres from the top of the bulb and remove the bulb from the compost. Give the bulb a good clean and place it in a
cool, dark place such as the crisper of a refrigerator for at least six weeks. But beware, do not store amaryllis bulbs near any apples as this will sterilise the bulbs. Remove bulbs from storage just before you would like to plant them — allowing eight weeks before you would like them to flower.

Local carpets at your service as Allied stores close Local independent carpet retailer Carpet Centre, Wombwell has been serving residents of Barnsley for 37 years. As the national chain Allied becomes yet another familiar name disappearing from Barnsley, Carpet Centre, Wombwell is even more committed to offering residents choice and value. What makes Carpet Centre, Wombwell different is the personal service you get as you walk through the door. Trevor and his staff have been in the flooring trade for 150 years combined. “Our experienced staff have a wealth of knowledge so our customers know they will get the best independent advice available. We are not a national chain, but instead provide a specialist service that our customers value. And, our size means we stay competitive, so our customers get the best of both worlds – value for money and a personal touch.”
But local doesn’t mean limited choice, Carpet Centre, Wombwell offers a broad selection of carpets, rugs, laminates, Amtico and tiles and carries some of the most well known brands, such as Brintons carpets, known for their luxury and quality. “We are delighted to be one of Brintons Platinum dealers, this endorses our expertise and credentials. We carry their complete range from plains, naturals through to exquisite patterns, to suit any interior be it traditional or contemporary,” says Carpet Centre, Wombwell. As familiar national chains disappear isn’t it time we looked a little closer to home and supported the specialists in our area? Carpet Centre, Wombwell is there to help, and for a limited period, if you bring this advert to the shop you can enjoy up to 15% discount.

Autumn Magazine GET HOT UNDER THE COLLAR THIS AUTUMN WITH the Summer holidays now a distant memory, why not warm up the looming cold months by treating yourself to a new Autumn fragrance. The choice of fragrances for both men and women is endless, and picking one can sometimes be a difficult and time consuming task. Fragrance expert Michelle D’vaz at the Perfume Shop, says those in search of a new Autumn scent should
try a warm, comforting fragrance. Autumn is such an exciting time for fragrance as it neatly presents the opportunity to change to a new more warm and sultry scent, says Michelle. “As the nights draw in and the temperature begins to fall the light, fresh, citrus and floral perfumes of spring and summer seem to lose their edge and warm, musky, more snuggly scents feel more appropriate.
Warming: Spice up Autumn with Idole d'Armani.
