PLANS FOR FIRST COUNCIL HOMES IN A GENERATION BY MIKE COTTON PLANS have been submitted for the first council housing in Barnsley for 30 years. Permission for 16 flats in four blocks at Vernon Crescent, Ward Green, has been requested by Berneslai Homes. The council hopes it will be paid for with £1.7m from the government – a share of the £100m fund announced to help kickstart the housing market and construction industry. Local labour will have to be used. If the application for funding is successful, it will allow the council to build its first council housing since the start of the Thatcher era. Nearby resident John Simpson, 59, said: “I’m all for it. “It’s going to be 100 per cent better than it is now if they do something with

the land rather than leaving it. “They’re going to improve and widen the road, which is good because it’s very tight. “It’s time to do something with Ward Green because I don’t think there’s been much for a long time.” The land was made available after several old council houses were knocked down. Some of the houses around the crescent area are soon to receive a makeover from Berneslai Homes under the Decent Homes’ programme. A council spokesman said: “We will not know if the bid is successful for a few weeks. “We have moved forward with the planning application so we can move quickly if the bid is agreed. If not agreed, the work would be ready for a housing association partner.” Virtually no staff in the council’s housing section had started work when

Barnsley Stop Smoking Service 10th Anniversary Barnsley NHS Stop Smoking Service is celebrating its 10th anniversary in October this year. If you attended the service in the early years and would be prepared to share some of your experiences of stopping smoking with the service, please contact Zoe Styring 01226 737077, we would like to hear from you. Amanda Campling has recently attended the service at Eldon Street and says, “I have been successfully quit now for five months. I started smoking on and off when I was 14 years old. I smoked until I became pregnant with my first child and then I stopped, but then I started smoking again, until I became pregnant again. It went that way until I had my sixth child. I stopped for a couple of years after I had my last child, but then started smoking again. “My main motivation for quitting was health reasons. My family and friends were so supportive through the quitting period, they were absolutely fantastic. My mum would phone me and say how proud she was of me. “I went to see my own doctor about giving up
smoking, but the nurse was overbooked. It just happened to be a Wednesday and the nurse said that the Quit Shop has late night openings on a Wednesday, so I got in the car and went straight there. I just did it straight away. The service was brilliant, I couldn't have done it without them. They are fantastic people and I would recommend the service to anyone who wants to quit smoking. They give therapy, they talk to you, they give out vouchers for Slimming World or Barnsley Premier Leisure (BPL). I went for the Slimming World vouchers, which is going really well, I've lost a stone and a half so far and I am determined to keep going. “It was really hard to quit, but I just had to keep thinking about what my doctors were telling me, and my kids told me that they didn't want to lose me or see me sick. Now that I have quit, I feel I can achieve anything. “I would advise people to quit as soon as they can and use the service, because smoking will take their lives if they don't stop.”
Bob traces his school chums, can you help? A FORMER Barnsley Holgate Grammar School pupil is trying to trace a group of pals who left in the late 1950s. Bob Brown was friends with a group who also played in a jazz band. He is now 70 and would like to get back in touch before he ‘pops
his clogs’. He said: “I don’t mean to be maudlin but you do start thinking about these things.” Bob now lives in Exeter and after leaving Barnsley studied in London and went on to teach at Exeter University. He is trying to find Eric ‘Eka’ Foster, David ‘Sam’
Briggs, John ‘Slosh’ Slater and Eric ‘Lu’ Lawson. Eric Foster lived in New Lodge and went to Manchester University before moving to Canada when Bob lost touch. He played drums in the band. John was the trumpeter who lived at Smithies and went in to
national service after leaving school. David went on to be a maths teacher at Holgate, Bob believes and Eric Lawson was living in London. They all left the school in 1957 to 1958. Anyone who can help should email firstname.lastname@example.org

BOWLING IS IN GOOD HANDS BY ANDREW LODGE THE major new improvements to Sugdens Bowling Club have been officially unveiled. Members and visitors celebrated the refurbishment of the clubhouse, the construction of two superb shelters beside the green, and an area of decking that allows spectators a grandstand view of all the action. The day was marked by a pairs competition that allowed members and visitors to enjoy the new facilities. Special guest Colin Ingram, chairman of Barnsley and District Bowling Association, praised the efforts of the bowling club. He enthused: “The work done by Sugdens’ members is absolutely marvellous. “Not only have they revived a flagging club, they have also developed a venue to be proud of.” Sugdens BC has been in existence for many years. The bowling green and recreation ground off Stocks Lane in Barnsley were established by Sugdens Shirt Company. The factory employed thousands of Barnsley folk over the years but has now closed, the buildings demolished, and the site redeveloped for housing. Long before the shirt factory closed, however, the recreation ground and bowling green were put in trust for the benefit of the public and managed by Barnsley Council. Sugdens BC now lease the green and clubhouse from the council and provide an opportunity for local peo-

It may be located in the middle of Barnsley but the bowling green is surrounded by mature trees and shrubbery But it has not all been a bed of roses. Three seasons ago the club was in decline. Membership was falling, the premises were old, in a poor state of repair and the burden of maintenance, let alone improvement, seemed to be beyond the remaining loyal members. However, they were determined to carry on and encouraged new members to join.
Importantly, some were women and there are now quite a few couples at the club. The entire atmosphere and complexion of the club has changed. The bowling is not only a sport – it is now also a social activity. The club had had no investment for many years – hardly surprising considering that any income from subscriptions, raffles etc was spent on running costs – so members were canvassed and their priorities were: G Improvements to the clubhouse; new kitchen, floor tiling, water heaters and lockers; G Shelters beside the

green; and G Improvement of an untidy area outside the clubhouse to provide a sitting/viewing area. Grants were duly obtained to carry out the work. A cheque of £10,000 was awarded by the Coalfield Regeneration Trust from the Bridging the Gap Fund; £4,995 was awarded by the South Yorkshire Community Foundation and Grassroots Grants Barnsley; and in addition club members contributed countless hours of their own time in planning and supervising the works and carrying out many other jobs. Sugdens secretary Steve Mitchell said: “We are very grateful to the Coalfields Regeneration Trust and South Yorkshire Community Foundation for the grants. The interior of the clubhouse is now light and welcoming with modern kitchen facilities and the shelters and decking are fantastic for players and spectators during matches. “The improvements have

President John Richardson added: “It has been the members that have kept the club going and it’s great to see everything coming together for them. “We all get so much enjoyment from being part of the club and bowling is an ideal way to meet peo-
ple and make friends.” In addition to the improvements off the green, the club is going from strength to strength on it. There is competition for places in the various teams and the club has been able to re-form a ladies’ team and a veterans’ team. Results throughout the club have been encouraging – the A team doubles are currently pushing for promotion, while the ladies and veterans are riding high in their respective leagues. This season both the A and B team doubles reached the semi finals of the Co-op Shield and Coop Shield Supplementary – and the A team also reached the final of the Greenwood Cup Supplementary last week. The club’s efforts have been recognised by the Barnsley and District Bowling Association and Sugdens has been selected as the venue for the final of the Greenwood Cup to be played at 6.15pm today. Any novices and social bowlers are certainly welcome at Sugdens. Contact Steve Mitchell 07595914737 for further details.
