Soccer club nets £50k
Police swap traditional uniform for polo shirts
BARNSLEY Football Club is £50,000 better off, thanks to savers at the Barnsley Building Society. The donation comprised one per cent of average balances in Reds’ Saver accounts and half a per cent from Junior Saver accounts. The society, the Reds’ main sponsor, merged with Yorkshire Building Society at the end of last year. The money from the Reds’ Saver account will go to the club and the Junior Reds’ contribution will help fund the club’s academy.

The shirts — black for police officers and navy blue for their community support officer (PCSO) colleagues — are made from a fabric which keeps them dry and comfortable in all working conditions, even when wearing body armour. They are said to be more environmentally friendly because they can be washed at 30 degrees and come out almost dry after a spin cycle. The South Yorkshire force expects to save £56,000 a year because they will last longer than the old ones. Deputy Chief Constable Bob Dyson, said: “After considering the current climate and environment we ask our officers to work in, the decision was taken for front-line personnel to wear a more practical garment than the traditional uniform.” Coun David Wainwright, who sits on the police authority, said: “Aesthetically, unfortunately I don’t think they look as nice, but when all said and done we want operational officers and on operation, especially in combat, I think a polo shirt will be a plus for them.” The Chronicle understands the old shirt and tie may still be used for formal occasions such as court visits and ceremonial occasions.
MORTGAGE REPOSSESSIONS DROP MORTGAGE repossessions in Barnsley went down by 42 per cent in the second quarter of the year compared to the same period in 2008. The Legal Services Commission, which has published the statistic, has said the drop is down to people being helped by an emergency service paid for by legal aid. The commission said that last year
some 270 Barnsley people used its housing possession court duty schemes. The schemes, one of which is at Barnsley County Court in Regent Street, provides free and immediate legal advice and representation to those in court because they are at risk of losing their homes. Denise McConnell, the commission’s national relationships direc-
tor, said: “The repercussions of the economic downturn have affected many in Barnsley. “I am delighted the housing possession duty scheme has been able to help so many people. “Court duty scheme advisers do a fantastic job, often making a dramatic and significant difference to preventing evictions at the eleventh hour.”

Jobless: young are at risk BARNSLEY school leavers are at the greatest risk of unemployment since the 1980s, according to the Prince’s Trust. The youth employment charity says the number of 18 to 24-year-olds on the dole in Barnsley has gone up by 77 per cent over 12 months. The trust, which has collaborated with the University of Sheffield on a report about youth unemployment, said Barnsley school leavers with no GCSEs are twice as likely to sign on as those with qualifications. Peter Branson, the trust’s regional director, said: “It is more important than ever that we support those with fewest qualifications before they become a lost generation.” Youth unemployment in Barnsley is at its highest in 14 years. The trust has launched training opportunities in sectors likely to endure the recession.

Well done: Sgt Hannah Moffat.
A MONK BRETTON woman has been placed in charge of the Queen’s Guard, the soldiers who guard royal residences in London. Hannah Moffatt, 28, has been promoted from Corporal to Sergeant and will be in the post until November. Hannah, who attended the Priory School, has been in the army for seven years. She served in Iraq twice and before taking her present role was stationed in Germany, where she trained colleagues to operate large military vehicles. She will oversee groups of soldiers guarding Buckingham Palace, St James’s Palace, Windsor Castle and the Tower of London. Dad Kevin, 54, of Camborne Way, said “I am so proud of her and I will visit London to see her.” He is to take part in the Berlin Marathon next month in aid of charity Help For Heroes which supports those wounded while on military duty.

Dave’s toil creates ‘cool’ caravan BY ADAM CIVICO CARAVANNERS Dave and Sally Warren admit they could have bought two vans for the £8,500 it cost to repair and restore their 37-yearold pride and joy. But Dave said work on the 1972 Carlight Continental, which was virtually unusable when they bought it four years ago for £900, has been a labour of love. Dave, 38, of Rothercroft, Hoyland, said: “There’s something about classic caravans that makes them stand out from modern makes, they’re so individual. “My dad wanted this model and I always remember it from being ten, that’s what made me get this one.” The restoration work took 18 months and the caravan is now valued at about £15,000. “It had a big split in the roof, the seats had sagged

There are not many about, certainly not in this condition.” Now the couple’s ‘cool caravan’ has been selected to feature in a new book about vintage vehicles, called My Cool Caravan. YOUNG SINGER HOPES HIS REGIONAL FINALS GO O-KAI ON THE NIGHT A WANNABE singer from Smithies has made it to the regional finals in an X-Factor- style competition. Kai Taylor, 18, of Newhill Road, performed Gone Too Soon by Michael Jackson at the OPENMICUK 2009 auditions at Sheffield City Hall. He was one of 10,000 to enter the competition which searches for the UK’s best singers, rappers and vocalists of all genres. Kai said: “It was so exciting. “There were four of us in a group and they got stopped about ten seconds into their performance but I went right to the end.” He will go back to the City Hall on September 20 and perform in front of a huge audience and judges including celebrities Dane Bowers from Another Level, Liz McClarnon from Atomic Kitten and Lee Latchford of Steps fame. Kai said: “I’m probably going to sing a big strong ballad to show my voice off.” Chris Grayston, head of A&R at Future

Music, said: “We are searching for an original act that has the live ability to impress an audience of over 2,000 alongside a number of industry judges and A&R associates, as well as the potential to become professional recording artistes.” No stranger to the limelight, Kai got to the boot camp stage on X-Factor in 2007 and was in the same group as finalist Ryhdian Roberts and winner Leon Jackson. He also got through to the finals on Stars in their Eyes in 2005 after performing as Dan-iel Bedingfield. Kai added: “Singing is my dream. “Since I was little I have always been singing. “I have never done anything else and don’t think I would be able to do anything else, it’s what I love.” If he makes it through the regional heat, Kai will perform at the national grand final in London and could win the chance to tour the UK and record his own album.

Barnsley Stop Smoking Service 10th Anniversary Barnsley NHS Stop Smoking Service is celebrating its 10th anniversary in October this year. If you attended the service in the early years and would be prepared to share some of your experiences of stopping smoking with the service, please contact Zoe Styring 01226 737077, we would like to hear from you. Amanda Campling has recently attended the service at Eldon Street and says, “I have been successfully quit now for five months. I started smoking on and off when I was 14 years old. I smoked until I became pregnant with my first child and then I stopped, but then I started smoking again, until I became pregnant again. It went that way until I had my sixth child. I stopped for a couple of years after I had my last child, but then started smoking again. “My main motivation for quitting was health reasons. My family and friends were so supportive through the quitting period, they were absolutely fantastic. My mum would phone me and say how proud she was of me. “I went to see my own doctor about giving up
smoking, but the nurse was overbooked. It just happened to be a Wednesday and the nurse said that the Quit Shop has late night openings on a Wednesday, so I got in the car and went straight there. I just did it straight away. The service was brilliant, I couldn't have done it without them. They are fantastic people and I would recommend the service to anyone who wants to quit smoking. They give therapy, they talk to you, they give out vouchers for Slimming World or Barnsley Premier Leisure (BPL). I went for the Slimming World vouchers, which is going really well, I've lost a stone and a half so far and I am determined to keep going. “It was really hard to quit, but I just had to keep thinking about what my doctors were telling me, and my kids told me that they didn't want to lose me or see me sick. Now that I have quit, I feel I can achieve anything. “I would advise people to quit as soon as they can and use the service, because smoking will take their lives if they don't stop.”

SUPER SUE AIMS HIGH IN WORLD RANKINGS BY NATHAN HEMMINGHAM DODWORTH’S wheelchair table tennis star Sue Gilroy is back on form as she bids to regain her place among the world’s best.
On form: Table Tennis star Sue Gilroy.
She hammered home her superiority on these shores by becoming the British Open Champion for the 15th time but on this occasion, the victory was made even more sweeter by the fact she lifted the newly-named Raymond Bailey Memorial Trophy, named after her late father. Just to prove Sue’s strangle-hold on the sport in this country, she even entered the men’s singles and mixed team event as part of her training and remarkably she picked up two silver medals, only losing out in the final of both events. In the European Championships in Italy Sue once again lost narrowly to the world’s best in the final of the singles to gain a creditable silver.
At the Slovakia Open, Sue returned home with a silver in the open competition, losing narrowly to the world number one from Serbia in the final. She also landed a bronze in the team event before reaching the semi-final of the combined 4/5 class where again, it needed the world number one in that category to halt her progress. In Romania Sue landed bronze for both the open and singles but took gold in the team event. “It was lovely to win the British title now that it is named after my father. “I didn’t compete in the last European Champions because of his death but because I won the 2005 Europeans I wanted to regain my title but even though I didn’t win I was pleased with my performance. “I feel I am back on form this year. I am playing really well and I am looking forward to the future. “I have had some really good wins, particularly against the Chinese and with the Serbian who
is the world number one that is normally 50/50 with us, I beat her three times in Romania. “It’s the World Championships next year and I am hoping that if my form continues like it is at the moment, I could medal again. “I got bronze last time. “Everything is going well for me at the minute. “Our training is now combined with the able bodied players at the EIS in Sheffield. “There is a structure in place and a new performance director and full time coaches.” To cap off a year to remember, Sue was also named on the Queen’s birthday honours list for an MBE, to be awarded for services to disabled and able-bodied table tennis as well as sport for young people, which stems from the many charities that she is involved in. And just for good measure, she has also been awarded a doctorate from Sheffield Hallam University for her outstanding contribution to sport for young people.
