THE proposed closure of Barnsley County Court will be discussed by a council group charged with investigating matters of housing and community safety. A public consultation is being carried out over proposals to shut the court, on the corner of Eastgate and Regent Street, and transfer its work to Sheffield. The proposal is part of the government’s cuts to help pay off the national debt. The court deals with civil matters including divorce, insolvency and bankruptcy. Coun Karen Dyson, who chairs the housing and community safety commission, said it would mean many Barnsley residents having to travel to Sheffield to use the courts there. She said it was an important issue for the group to look into and a special meeting has been called at the town hall on Friday August 20 at 2pm. Members of the public can attend as observers, but questions and comments must be forwarded in writing in advance.

Gardeners’ gratitude: Nev and Pauline Fearon celebrate their golden wedding anniversary on Friday.

CHARITY DAY HAS A GOLDEN TOUCH IT SEEMS appropriate that Nev Fearon will show off his ‘wedding cake’ tree this weekend, as the charity open day is also a celebration of his golden wedding anniversary. The tiered ‘wedding cake’ tree is one of about 200 in Nev’s award-winning garden, which will be open to the public on Sunday. The event, which will also include a cake and plant sale, is being held to raise money for Dr Rhoden’s cardiology ward at Barnsley Hospital, where Nev was treated for heart problems about ten years ago. “It’s just a way to repay them and they

might be seeing me again yet,” said Nev, 70. Nev and his wife Pauline, 69, who celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on Friday thought this was a good way to mark the occasion. They married at St Andrew’s Church, Hoyland. Nev said: “All our family and friends were asking if we were going to do something or have a party. “We didn’t want anything like that so I said I’d do an open day in the garden to raise funds for the hospital instead.” The open day will be held at 27, Southlea Avenue, Hoyland, S74 9LD, from 11am until 5pm. Contact 743895 for more information.

FORMER electrical engineer Martin Dyson hopes to be elected councillor at the same time he takes on the role of Mayor’s consort next year. The 48-year-old, of Roehampton Rise, Ardsley, has been selected as the Labour Party candidate for the Central Ward at the next election. If he wins next May, he’ll become councillor just as his wife Karen becomes Mayor. He has run for council in other wards in the past but has not served on the council yet. He said: “It’s just something I want to do, to get involved and do my bit for the community.” He says he will be starting his campaign immediately and will join Central ward councillors Doug Birkinshaw, Margaret Bruff and Mike Stokes on their ‘walkabouts’. The selection process was sparked when Coun Stokes announced earlier this year that he will not be fighting the next election.

Cones ahoy: Graham Ibbeson with two of his cone related pieces of work, Conefined Collin and Monday’s God. Picture: Brett Carr

GRAHAM’S CONE MAD THEY’RE the bane of most motorists and now the traffic cones have come to life. Barnsley sculptor Graham Ibbeson has produced a series of pieces based on the children’s book characters ‘The Cones’. “Chris Madeley, the children’s author, had this idea of using cones as little people who have a life once the car has whizzed passed,” said Graham. “I was at the book launch when it was suggested that I do a cone but I said there was no way I would do a cartoon charac-

ter. I had adapted it to my style, they’re a play on words but using sculpture. “I think they went down well. “I try to make my work accessible, humorous and warm so people feel comfortable round the work. “I’m hoping that the scourge of the motorist will be viewed with a little more affection from now on but I’m not holding my breath.” The sculptures were unveiled at an exhibition in Leeds last week.

Beastly play at castle

ANGER AS SHOP BARS GUIDE DOG A BLIND woman claims she was banned from going into a shop – because of her guide dog. Judith Evans said she was left feeling angry and humiliated when she was told to leave H&A News on May Day Green. She had been shopping in the town centre when three-year-old Poppy led her into the newsagents. Judith, 33, of Worsbrough Road, Birdwell, said she was shocked when the shopkeeper told her to leave the dog outside. “I explained Poppy was a guide dog but he said ‘no dogs’,” she said. “I couldn’t believe it. She was wearing a harness and I was holding on to her and walking behind so it was obvious she was a working dog.” Judith has had a guide dog for several years and said she had

always been treated well until now. “It has never happened before as people normally like the dogs. “A lot of shop owners know me quite well and even ask me to bring in my old dog Flick to see how she’s getting on. “We won’t be going back to that shop, they’ve lost my custom now.” The 1995 Disability Discrimination Act makes it illegal for an establishment to refuse access to anyone with a disability. A spokesman for Guide Dogs for the Blind said it was discrimination or ignorance to stop someone entering a premises with a guide dog. “We are appalled when a guide dog owner is refused access to a service. “They are breaking the law by refusing access to a disabled per-

The sad tale of Alice’s broken heart revealed Alice Scholey was well-known for her work as a seamstress but beneath her professional exterior lay a broken heart. Kate Pickles reports. CLEANING out a cupboard, Carole Ashworth stumbled across a football medal which brought memories of her husband’s great-aunt flooding back. The gold medal belonged to Harry Dennis, the son of a greengrocer who lived on Park Grove, Barnsley, next door to Alice Scholey. The couple were close friends, growing up together, but were too young to court by the time Harry was called up to serve in 1914. He gave Alice the cup medal which he had

won the previous year playing for Barnsley Amateurs in the early closing league. Tragically, he did not return. Harry died in August, 1918, in Pas de Calais, France, and was buried in a British cemetery over there. He was 24. Alice never got over his death, did not get

married or have children. “She said she never met anyone who compared to him and he was the love of her life,” says Carole, of Pogmoor. “I think part of it was to do with her mother because Alice’s father left when she was a baby. Her and her sister would sew and her mum needed that to keep her as there was no such thing as a pension back then. “A lot of people in Barnsley will remember her as she used to make their Whitsuntide clothes. She was a lovely woman, wellspoken but quiet.”

Advertiser’s Announcement

What’s the fastest way to sell your house? Sometimes the need to sell FAST outweighs everything else – but who can you turn to? People need to sell their homes for all sorts of reasons. Of course, the 3 most obvious – which Estate Agents call the 3-D syndrome – are Death, Divorce and Debt, but in today’s fast-moving and uncertain society there are many others too, such as job relocation, illness and infirmity, retirement and downsizing. Add to that list people who have had their house ‘on the market’ for months and months, and have had enough… they want to sell NOW! Whatever the reasons behind the need to sell, the simple fact remains that if you want to sell your home quickly, the most usual route – on the open market using an Estate Agent – may take months. That’s not the fault of the Estate Agents – the state of the housing market at the moment means it’s not easy to find a buyer, particularly one who is prepared to pay the right price. So if you decide to use an Estate Agent, how can you speed up the process? I There are plenty of good Estate Agents around, so choose one who understands the local market for your type of property and can show you other properties similar to yours that they have sold recently.

I Explain your reasons for wanting to sell quickly and ask them to price your property ‘for a quick sale’. After all, you want yours to stand out from the rest by having it ‘on the market’ at what appears to be a bargain price. I Ask your agent to pull all the strings they can to find a buyer for you and to keep you informed by phone, email or text. If you don’t hear from them, call them and ask what’s happening. You need to show a sense of urgency and hope that it rubs off on them! Of course, selling your home can be an expensive process. There are Estate Agents’ fees and conveyancing costs to take into account which all reduce the amount of cash you get from the sale. So are there any options where you can legitimately sidestep the usual sale costs and still get a quick sale? You can ‘go it alone’ and sell your house privately by advertising it for sale on the internet, in local newspapers, shop windows etc. It sounds simple, but in practice there are 2 major drawbacks. Firstly, you have to arrange everything yourself: viewings, advertising, phone calls, valuations, conveyancing etc – it’s all down to you. Secondly, private sales

account for only a small percentage of total home sales. When buyers are looking for homes to purchase, their first instinct is to look at Estate Agents’ advertising, or call into a High Street office. In other words, traditional Estate Agents get most coverage, while private sales are few and far between. But there is another option. Where you can sell your home privately – and avoid the usual fees – but not have the hassle of arranging everything yourself. Thanks to companies like Need To Sell Quick which buy private homes for investment purposes, for those people who want to sell their property quickly it couldn’t be easier to get an offer within 24 hours. Generally, everything is finalised within 28 days – often more

quickly if circumstances demand it. No fees to pay If you currently own a property and, for whatever reason, you’d like to sell it quickly, a Barnsley-based company, Need To Sell Quick, specialises in fast cash-release home purchases. They guarantee to give you an offer for your home within 24 hours and will complete within days, rather than weeks or even months. What’s more, as mentioned above, unlike using an estate agent to sell your home, there are no fees to pay and it will all be done quickly, professionally, discreetly and with the minimum fuss. For a hassle-free future, call Need To Sell Quick FREE on 0800 032 6311 or 01226 447 177.
