3 Parks set to get £71k makeover PARKS around Monk Bretton and Carlton are to be improved with a £71,000 payment from a developer. The money has been handed to Barnsley Council as part of a Section 106 agreement which compensates for the loss of green space. Now £71,141 will be spent on play equipment and repairs to the pavilion at Carlton Park and on the upgrading of other sites including Monk Bretton Park and the playing fields at Rotherham Road and Lamb Lane. Car parking, trees, shrubs and seating will be added at those sites. Coun Roy Miller said: “The work means that better facilities will be provided and others maintained across a wider area which will benefit more people.”

BY IAN THOMPSON A FASHION show was staged to launch Gateway Plaza last Thursday where a national health service walk-in centre will open this week. The centre is the first occupant of the office, flats and hotel block, off Shambles Street, which has cost £70m. Matthew Stephens, a manager of co-developer Quest Property, announced the opening of the health centre at a reception attended by more than 100 VIPs and other guests. The event included the fashion show staged by the Pollyanna boutique owner Rita Britton. Mr Stephens said: “The NHS centre is ready to go and is looking for patients. It is fantastic because this feels like a ‘live’ building now we have an occupant. The Primary Care Trust wanted the centre to open as soon as possible.
‘It is fantastic because this feels like a ‘live’ building now we have an occupant. The primary care trust wanted the centre to open as soon as possible’ “The next step is to get the other offices let.” Mayor Coun John Parkinson said: “This is a very exciting time for the town. Barnsley has been right to press ahead with regeneration. Developers obviously share our enthusiasm for the future of Barnsley.” Fitting out of offices for the housing organisation Berneslai Homes is due to start soon and talks are being held with potential occupiers. A 110-bed Premier Hotel is due to open before Christmas. Gateway Plaza is the biggest privately funded development in Barnsley’s history.

He said: “Hopefully, if we’re successful with the bid, by September 2010 we’ll be handing over the keys to the first in over 30 years.” The last were built in several projects between 1979 and 1982. Mr Jagger has worked in housing for the council since 1990, so he and most of his colleagues have never seen council house building in their careers. “It’s always something we’ve aspired to, providing more new council

A lot of people in Barnsley work in construction. “We’re doing everything we can to get as many homes built to meet the needs for affordable housing and to get people working.” The council is going for the Vernon Crescent scheme at the earliest opportunity — the deadline for the first batch of funding is the end of this month. Band to drum up members A BRASS band is looking for new members after they had to pull out of a contest they organised because they didn’t have enough players. Old Silkstone B Band needs players of any age and ability. Secretary, Helen Croud, said: “We have players from primary school age to retired but we don’t have enough members. “There are about ten stalwarts
and then several who come when they can but we are struggling to take on jobs at the minute without borrowing from other bands. “We are looking for players who can commit to the weekly Monday evening rehearsals and who would be willing to take part in events and competitions. “They don’t have to be accomplished musicians, we welcome beginners and those who have
had time away from playing an instrument and want to get back into it. We are just a small village band and there is no pressure.” Earlier this year the band received a community grant through the Chronicle’s cash giveaway which they used to buy a drum kit. If anyone is interested in joining contact Helen Crouden on 07890 592098.

Advertiser’s Announcement
Think you can’t quit smoking? That’s what Jonathan thought... Jonathan Rollinson, a 21year-old hairdresser, had doubts about stopping smoking. This is how he began the last 10 smokefree months – one day at a time… I first started smoking in the first teenage years at school. I started smoking because all my friends were smoking. I smoked more from leaving school, as I think being able to smoke made me smoke more. My family didn’t know that I smoked until I was 16, my mum could smell it on me I think from the start. But when I was 16 I told them that I smoked – nothing was said to me as they are smokers themselves. They weren’t impressed or happy that I smoked, but at 16 I could buy my own cigs so there was nothing they could really say. “I found lots of health problems from smoking even at the start, I noticed my breathing wasn’t as good, I felt it definitely held me back, I could tell that I smoked because if I walked a long distance, jogged or ran I could feel that my chest was really tight and it was difficult to breathe. Whenever I got a cold it went straight to my chest and it was worse than it would have been normally.” I quit smoking when I was 20, it will be a year in April. I quit
smoking for health reasons, I joined the gym, stopped smoking and noticed a huge difference. It was also for money reasons that I quit smoking, as I used to smoke over 20 a day so I had to buy 40 a day which was something like over £11.00 a day. I was sick of it! “I’ve been twice to the service for help. The first time I came I just used patches and inhalers it was really good and really helpful, but I didn’t feel it did enough for me and I felt in a bad mood and cranky all the time. The second time I came back another medication was recommended to me and within a few weeks, after the week with smoking I had a couple of draws and then I just stopped, as the smoking made me feel sick.” Since I stopped smoking my fitness has improved, I feel healthier, I feel more awake and I’m a lot better off financially, I bought a new car and that encouraged me to stop smoking as I knew I couldn’t keep up with both. I’ve got a daughter, who is 5 years old and I think from me
stopping smoking she has benefited from it as well. When she was born I was still smoking and even if I didn’t smoke near her, she would go into the room I had been smoking in and she could smell it on my clothes. So stopping smoking for her is one of the main reasons I quit. She says all the time “my daddy doesn’t smoke anymore” and to hear her say that is definitely an achievement and I know she is proud of me, that is worth it. I think if a child sees their parents smoke, I think it is a big influence on them, they will see it as ok for them to smoke and I definitely think it is a bad influence. I don’t miss smoking at all. I think for your family and for your health it would be best to stop smoking, because it just affects everybody not just yourself. Like Jonathan, many local people have found that ‘it’s all right to ask for help’. The Barnsley NHS Stop Smoking Service currently helps an average of 40 people to quit each week. For more information, drop into the Quitshop at 12-14 Eldon Street or call the Service on (01226) 737077.

Craig said: “It feels amazing to have won, especially as I achieved the highest marks in the Yorkshire and Humber regional competition. I practised really hard in the run up to the heat, so it’s all paid off.” Greg said: “I can’t wait to enter the competition again next year. I hope I can improve upon my performance and leave with a medal again.” Craig will now represent the region at a national final in Scotland.

Well-earned rest: Retiring charity worker Josie Hull.
Retiring Josie’s got a big heart JOSIE Hull wanted to do something to say thanks for the care she was given at Barnsley Hospital after she had her first heart attack in 1976. Despite two more heart attacks she spent 30 years helping to raise more than £100,000 for the Barnsley Coronary Club with fellow committee members. A celebration was held to mark 30 years of fund-raising. A former head cook at Barnsley police station, Josie, 84, stepped down from the committee as she is awaiting a heart valve replacement operation. She said: “We started with jumble sales and tombola stalls and we got involved with a group called the Barnstormers and went through the clubs and pubs. “I can remember seeing Ted Johnson at a do and Ray Hunt, raising money for an EECP machine. “I told him – not to forget the car next time as a joke. “The next morning there was a phone call to say he had given us a car. “I thought they meant a toy car but it was a Fiat worth £11,000. “I have enjoyed every day of fund-raising. I have met some beautiful and wonderful people and we have had some great parties – marvellous times.” Josie, of Rockingham Road, Gilroyd, also ran Silkstone Golf Club for 14 years with her late husband Ralph.

IT’S TIME TO TACKLE DIY JOBS NOW that summer has arrived, many people who take a break to enjoy the weather still find time for a little DIY or tackle a few gardening jobs. Lots of people taking a ‘rest from work’ enjoy spending time revamping the look and feel of a room or flower bed. According to research, well over half (61 per cent) of people have
recently redecorated a room that didn’t really need doing. If you must get out the toolbox this summer, why not spend a couple of hours making your home more secure. IT’S TIME TO STRIKE UP THE BARBECUE WE all like to make the most of the hot British weather by striking up the barbie and munching some sizzling grub in the summer sun. It’s good news then that barbecuing is one of the healthiest ways to eat. It’s common knowledge that grilling meat reduces fat, but popular barbecue options such as greasy burgers and charred hotdogs, will definitely see you piling on the pounds if consumed in large quantities. As an alternative to barbecuing huge amounts of meat, try grilling fish and making fruit and vegetable accompaniments to ensure your barbecue is healthy and varied. Fish is
full of good omega three fatty acids, which reduce the risk of high cholesterol, and there are plenty of tasty options to choose from, including salmon and tuna, that will stay in one piece. Tasty vegetable kebabs are colourful, tasty and healthy choices for the grill that can be prepared quickly giving you more time to relax in the sunshine. But for those who think a barbecue just isn’t complete without meat dishes, go for lean cuts of meats using light marinades such as olive oil, citrus fruit juice and herbs to add mouthwatering flavours.

MOROCCO’S A FINE VACATION, NO SWEAT Looking for a summer holiday destination? Morocco has something magical for every kind of visitor. It is a land full of imperial cities with a rich cultural heritage and history, it has beaches that sun worshippers would die for and boasts some spectacular scenery. Sixties hippies, seventies love children and now 21st century socialites have all taken their turns flocking to this North African country to be enchanted and enlightened. To immerse yourself in the traditions of Morocco, try a trip to Marrakech. The ‘pink city’ is full of ancient palaces and mosques, gorgeous gardens, and souks (markets), that are a dream for shopa-
holics who like to barter – you can even buy a camel. A word of warning, whatever your skin type beware of how sunburnt you’re getting because it’s so dry you don’t sweat. But if you want to sweat, an interesting stop is at the local hammam – the Moroccan version of a Turkish bath. The calm of the bath can prepare you for the exciting night-time spectacle in the square at the heart of the city Djemmaa-el-Fna – Place of the Dead. Acrobats, musicians, snake charmers, fortune tellers and henna-tattooed belly dancers abound. Other cities to visit include the capital Rabat, with its nearby forest and popular beaches, or Meknes, where

the ancient old town is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage site. Fès is the most ancient and impressive of the imperial cities, built in the eighth century. The medina of Fès el-Bali (Old Fès) is one of the largest living medieval cities in the world, and its gates and walls really are magnificent. It is a huge maze of winding streets and covered bazaars where it is easy to get lost. Don’t expect to find Humphrey Bogart’s Casablanca, Morocco’s largest city is an industrial centre. It’s a brash, working port with wide boulevards, public parks and imposing Mauresque (Moorish) civic buildings. Casablanca’s medina, or ancient quarter, is worth a look, and the Hassan II Mosque here is one of the largest in the world. If it is sun you want, try the modern holiday city of
Agadir, known as the ‘Pearl of the south’. It’s an ancient Portuguese trading post which boasts 10km of beach, excellent water sports and great golf courses. For a quieter more sedate look at Morocco, head inland to the south – it is a region rich in folklore and spectacular scenery, dotted with small oasis villages and quiet towns surrounded by orchards and olive groves. Erfoud is the centre for excursions to the oasis of Tafilalt, kept green and fertile by the underground waters of the Ziz and Rheris. There are the Blue Springs at Meski, the natural amphitheatre of Cirque de Jaffar and Tinerhir, once a garrison of the French Foreign Legion, near the outstanding scenery of the Draa Valley and the magnificent Spectacular scenery: Morocco is a magical destination. opener and top scorer Alex Blackwell, who was caught and bowled by the Barnsley girl. The score left England needing 273 from the final session of the final day. There was never going to be enough time for England to knock off the runs, so the hosts made sure the Ashes stayed in England by closing on 106 for three. Brunt’s Barnsley-based team-mate Sarah Taylor, rated the world’s number one batsman in the ladies’ game, was also on form in the Ashes. The wicket-keeper held two catches in the first innings and scored a quickfire 21. A stumping in the second innings was her only success behind the stumps and she was not called on to bat.

and Rachel Haynes put together a 229-run partnership for the sixth wicket. It was Brunt who brought that stand to an end, with Fields trapped lbw for her sixth wicket of the day but the Aussie total of 309 all out left England with it all to do. Katherine ended with six for 69 from 26 overs, 10 of which were maidens. The total proved too much for England and they began the second innings 41 runs behind. Brunt played her part with the bat, adding a much-needed 27 and sharing a 47-run partnership for the seventh wicket with Beth Morgan. Brunt also hit five fours but the Aussies again had the upper hand with the bat in their second innings, finishing on 231 all out. Brunt took just one wicket in this session, but it was the key one of

there is still more to come. She added: “I am carrying a few niggles and I have also had flu for the last six weeks because of a bug that went through the team. “Once I get back to full strength I will be better than before. I still feel I can swing the ball more and maybe add a yard more pace. So there is definitely more to come from me.” Katherine took seven wickets throughout the Ashes Test but it was her performance in the first innings that grabbed the headlines. She ripped the heart out of the Aussie batting line-up, leaving the tourists sinking at 28 for five. Indeed, her first six overs brought three wickets for six runs including four maidens! It was a remarkable opening spell but her stunning start went unrewarded as Jodie Fields

top drawer performances. Her stunning figures of three for six from four overs, one maiden, in the final of the T20 against New Zealand saw her named player of the match and her six for 69 in the first innings of this month’s Ashes Test is a career best return. Those performances have helped her shoot to fourth in the ICC world rankings list and she is now turning her attentions to being number one. “From a consistency point of view, I have probably bowled better and that was towards the end of 2005. “But from a performance point of view this is the form of my life. I have got quite high standards and I believe I am bowling well enough to be there at number one. “I have obviously seen the other girls above me and I do put myself up there with them. “The thing about rankings is it is based on wickets. I bowled really well in the World Cup but did not get my reward in terms of wickets. “The rankings don’t take into account the batters played and missed 17 times. “But if I can get to number one it means one thing – you are a wicket taker and that’s why I play cricket to take wickets.” And despite this season’s amazing form,

KATHERINE Brunt’s amazing year continued last week when she helped England Ladies retain the Ashes for a third successive time. The draw with Australia, which sees the title remain on English soil, capped off an unbelievable last six months which also included winning the 50-over World Cup, the Twenty20 World Championship and the one-day series over the Aussies. It has been a lot for the former Penistone Grammar School pupil to digest, but, like always, she has taken it comfortably in her stride. “It has been quite a year,” she admitted. “We had a reception at Downing Street last week where we all met Gordon Brown. It was a good day, although I had a massive hangover but you try to enjoy these occasions as much as you can. “Winning the World Cup was the best thing that ever happened. “We really celebrated that because we wanted it so much. Once we won it, we wanted to win the others. “The 4-0 whitewash over the Aussies in the one-day series was the first time that has ever happened so it has been a great year for us.” On a personal level, the opening bowler from Dodworth has delivered a string of
