PRIMARY PUPILS LAP UP STAMP CONTEST BY KATIA HARSTON TWO Cawthorne primary pupils stood on the winners podium at Silverstone race track after winning a stamp design competition. Joseph Brownlow, nine, and Harry Chinnock, ten, will now have their own stamps made. “It was a brilliant day,” said Joseph, after the final. “We didn’t think we would win and were just happy to be there and seeing all these amazing cars. “We got to ride around the circuit, stand on the winner’s podium where Lewis

Hamilton stood and even got to sit in a Formula One racing car.” The two lads are best friends and worked together to create a stamp design based on the theme of journeys and travel. They came up with ‘Rocket to the Moon from 1829 to 1969’, which shows a timeline leading to the first moon landing. They will now have their design put on a sheet of stamps not going into general production – making them very rare. As part of their visit the lads were treated to a circuit tour and taken to the race control area normally out of bounds to visitors.

Road closures in the pipeline

FURY AT PLAN TO ORDAIN WOMEN

ROAD closures will be in effect on Old Mill Lane in late July and throughout August while gas pipes are replaced. Three-way temporary traffic lights will be in use at the junction of Old Mill Lane, Burton Road and Wakefield Road from Saturday for about a week. From Wednesday July 28 one of the two lanes for traffic leaving Barnsley, near the Carphone Warehouse, will be closed for about six weeks. Eldon Street North will be closed to traf-

CLERGYMEN have held an emergency summit to discuss their reaction to plans to ordain women bishops. And one priest said he would consider converting to Roman Catholicism over the move, agreed by the Church of England’s ruling body. Fr Peter Needham, of St Luke’s, Grimethorpe, believes the decision would undermine traditionalists in the borough. He said those who have served many years with the Church of England would feel pushed out because they regarded the situation as wrong. He said: “A lot of people think that those against the ordaining of women are misogynists or crusty old men, but you couldn’t get further from the truth. “I hear women speaking about why they want to be ordained as bishops. They talk about power and authority but being a bishop is about service and unity.” Fr Needham said traditionalists on the Catholic wing of the church may even convert to Catholicism if the situation becomes untenable.

MEDALS OF HONOUR FOR SOLDIERS BY CARLA GEORGE THE going was good for two Barnsley soldiers who received their service medals in a ceremony at York Race Course. Colin Johnson, 46, and Matthew Baldwin, 37, from 4th Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment were rewarded for a six-month tour in Afghanistan last year. Both TA soldiers operated with different units undertaking a variety of roles including mentoring the Afghanistan National Army and police. Matthew, of Royston, joined the TA 14 years ago to ‘break up the monotony of his everyday life’. He said: “I just wanted something different and I have always enjoyed keeping fit so thought I would give the TA a go. “When I am not serving I work as a heating engineer, but I enjoy being in the TA more than anything else.” During his time in Afghanistan he worked in a UK Liaison Training Team based at Camp Alamo in Kabul. He said: “It was my responsibility to train six or seven officers from the Afghanistan National Army who would in turn train 150 new recruits. These

recruits were coming in every two weeks and it was extremely rewarding to know that they would be trained properly.” Matthew, who returned home in March, said he was always aware of the dangers around him but had to concentrate on the task in hand. He said: “It wasn’t so bad in the training camp in Kabul but the first time I went to Afghanistan I was working on the street with civilians. “The danger is all around you, while I was there there were suicide bombers, roadside bombs and the German embassy was blown up but you have to do your job.” Matthew, who lives with his partner Jacky, said he was immensely proud to receive his award. He said: “The atmosphere was fantastic, the crowd were so appreciative of the job that we are doing, it was a great day.” Lieutenant Colonel David Rhodes, the Battalion’s commanding officer, said: “The majority of these soldiers have civilian jobs and they put these and their family lives on hold for six months to serve their country.”

Jobless figures are high but falling UNEMPLOYMENT in Barnsley has decreased faster than the national and regional averages with almost 400 people coming off Jobseekers’ Allowance. Figures for June show 6,694 claimed the allowance in June, 4.8 per cent of the working age population. The national average is 3.8 per cent and the Yorkshire and Humber average 4.4 per cent. Barnsley’s figure of 4.8 per cent is down from 5.1 per cent in May, and 5.3 per cent in April. It has fallen every month since January. In total there are 26,500 people claiming benefits including Jobseekers, incapacity, lone parent and other benefits. That equates to 19.1 per cent of the Barnsley population, compared to a national average of 13.4 and a regional average of 14.2 based on the most recent figures published in November. Leader of the council Steve Houghton said: “I’m sure it’s partly to do with some of the measures put in place by the previous government, and I know it’s partly due to what we’ve done in Barnsley with things like the Future Jobs Fund which has brought people off benefits and into work. “While this is good news we know there are going to be much more difficult times ahead. Our priority is helping keep people in work.” ■ Figures: Office for National Statistics.

DIG UNEARTHS HISTORY one of this country’s richest families during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, had the mansion built for his son, Henry, in about 1580. Mr Townend said: “We had an inkling that there was a Tudor occupation of the site. “What we have found is better preserved than we thought.” Those on the dig, who have been supported by Wath-based Elmet Archaeological Services Ltd, have uncovered a fireplace, flagged surface and the remains of what is believed to have been a kitchen.” Henry Talbot is believed to have lived in the mansion for about 20 years and the ownership passed on to someone else as he died with no sons. The dig has caused a stir among locals.

Friends of Monk Bretton Priory vice chairman Cyril Hall, 83, said: “I played in the grounds of the priory as a nipper. “It’s brilliant what’s being discovered. “It’s exciting.” Historian Gerald Alliott, 82, who has written a book about the lost relics of Barnsley, said: “What has been discovered so far adds detail to Monk Bretton Priory’s rich history.” A team of 12 volunteers, three archaeologists and between eight and 12 students will continue the dig until the end of this month. A report will be prepared for South Yorkshire Archaeological Service which will be made available to the public.

Nothing much seemed to be happening at an archaeological dig at Monk Bretton Priory. Finds included a couple of trays of masonry, but there was nothing to set the pulse racing and everyone was thinking this was going to be a quiet day. Then, as Time Team fans know only too well, something emerged in the earth. It was believed to be a copper token. An item like this gets archaeologists such as Dr Hugh Willmott and Pete Townend, who are leading the Monk Bretton dig, quite excited.

IO N

IT WAS a moment straight out of Channel Four’s Time Team.

The pair explain the token was likely to be used by merchants in lieu of money. It is another clue about what went on after Henry VIII’s dissolution of the monasteries in 1538. Other finds have included parts of a 16th century ceramic drinking cup and a medieval vessel it is believed was used to process copper. Dr Willmott, of Sheffield University, said: “We are extremely pleased with what we have found so far.” A team of archaeologists, students and volunteers from the public have uncovered the remains of a mansion on a plot of land bought by George Talbot, a jailer of Mary Queen of Scots. Summertime

A barnsleyindependent Special Supplement

A way to coax the kids out to play DURING the summer we try to encourage children to play outdoors rather than being cooped up in the house. A simple area of grass, however, often fails to coax children from the comfort of their bedrooms. But if you have a Flights of Fantasy playhouse in your garden the challenge might be getting your

child back indoors. Based on a farm in Norfolk, Flights of Fantasy was established by Russell Bowlby who has a clear passion for providing children with the ultimate in play and recreation. In addition to the original Tudor cottage – now a best-seller – the company’s portfolio of child-sized properties has expanded to include playhouses

beyond a child’s wildest dreams, such as castles, fortresses and pirate ships. Miniatures of the real thing, cottage playhouses can be built on one or two levels offering features of a ‘proper’ house with two storeys. And the extravagance doesn’t end there. Extras for these dream buildings include similarly-scaled wooden furniture

for kitchens, bedrooms and living rooms as well as scramble nets, platforms, poles, slides, flags and monkey bars. Even heating and lighting can be provided, allowing the playhouses to be enjoyed all year round. Furthermore, for the ultimate finishing touch, Flights of Fantasy will landscape an individual garden around the playhouse — after all what’s a house without a garden?

worked into the planting hole. They also need good drainage, so planting the bulbs on a layer of grit will help prevent rot. If your lilies are to be planted in containers, plant one bulb in a 20cm pot or three bulbs in a 25cm to 30cm pot. Containers should always be at least 20cm deep and filled with compost. Shoots will start to appear in the spring, water lilies regularly at this point, but never completely soak them. Tall lilies with graceful stems will need support, try not to pierce the bulb when driving the stake in to the ground. Pests that lilies suffer from can be vicious. The bright red lily beetle will destroy your entire collection.

A group of three or five is enough to fill an average patio with scent on a warm summer evening. Lilies are ideal if you have a small garden because they make the most of vertical space. Place a pot by your back door or near an open window and let the strong, natural fragrance fill your home. You should also find a good selection of bulbs in garden centres and other plant retailers. The best bulbs are big and plump. The roots should not be dry, and they also should be round and firm. If you wish to plant lilies in a border, try to place the bulbs so they grow through ground cover or low-growing plants. They like their heads in the sun and their feet in the shade. Recommended time to plant is autumn, but most bulbs are sold in the spring. Like most other bulbs, lilies like to be grown in groups and are perfect for creating blocks of colour.

Picking off the beetles and larvae by hand is the best method of control. Help prevent slug damage by growing lilies in pots or by using a cocoshell mulch around plants in the border. Tell-tale signs of viral infections transmitted by aphids include distorted growth which is evident on stems and leaves.

Welcome: New loan signing Diego Arismendi. Picture courtesy of Barnsley FC.

ROBINS RECRUITS ‘THE DESTROYER’ THE Reds will have a £2.5m footballer in midfield next season. Barnsley boss Mark Robins has replaced Player of the Year Hugo Colace with a fellow South American defensive midfielder nicknamed ‘the Destroyer’. While free agent Colace has yet to officially join another club – he is reported to be involved in a transfer tug-of-war between Swansea and Leicester – Robins has swooped for Stoke City’s Uruguayan international Diego Arismendi on a season-long loan. He became number six in the Reds’ recruitment drive this summer – and is the third Stoke player to join Barnsley on loan in the last 12 months, following in the footsteps of Ryan Shotton and Carl Dickinson. Arismendi, 22, joined the Premier League Potters from Uruguayan side Nacional last summer for £2.5m, but made only a couple of first team appearances, both in the Carling Cup, and failed to make Stoke’s matchday 18 for a league game. ‘The Destroyer’, as he is known in his homeland, had a loan spell at League One Brighton late in the season, under the management of fellow Uruguayan, Seagulls’ boss Gus Poyet, and although he showed glimpses of his undoubted

talent, he was sent off in one game and then saw his six-match loan spell curtailed by injury. Reds boss Robins said: “Diego has signed a season-long loan with us and I’m delighted to have got him. He is a full Uruguayan international with real pedigree. He has a lot of quality. “He has not played much for Stoke but they signed

him for a big fee last summer and view him as a top prospect for the future. “He’s been in England for a year now and needs regular first team football. We’ll provide him with that opportunity. “There is no point bringing a player in on loan, especially from a Premier League club, if you are not going to play them.”
