PIPERS GROVE SCHOOL
Shawlands School is celebrating the achievements of pupils Bethany Dickinson and Olivia Faulkner and staff member Sue Gilroy. Year Six teacher Sue, of Baslow Crescent, Dodworth, has been awarded an MBE for services to table tennis. She was a key player in the development of Britain’s paralympic table tennis team and joined them at the Paralympic Games in Beijing last year. Also dreaming of Olympic success is Year Six pupil Bethany, 11, of Upper Sheffield Road. She has received a scholarship to Greenhead Academy in Huddersfield, an elite gymnastics centre for 2012 London Olympics hopefuls. Olivia, another Year Six pupil, has also won a scholarship. The 11-year-old of Racecommon Road will attend the Hooper and Sutton Ballet School in Hull. Headteacher Jill Brookling said: “It’s a stunning school to be in. Think you can’t quit smoking? That’s what Jonathan thought... Jonathan Rollinson, a 21year-old hairdresser, had doubts about stopping smoking. This is how he began the last 10 smokefree months – one day at a time… I first started smoking in the first teenage years at school. I started smoking because all my friends were smoking. I smoked more from leaving school, as I think being able to smoke made me smoke more. My family didn’t know that I smoked until I was 16, my mum could smell it on me I think from the start. But when I was 16 I told them that I smoked – nothing was said to me as they are smokers themselves. They weren’t impressed or happy that I smoked, but at 16 I could buy my own cigs so there was nothing they could really say. “I found lots of health problems from smoking even at the start, I noticed my breathing wasn’t as good, I felt it definitely held me back, I could tell that I smoked because if I walked a long distance, jogged or ran I could feel that my chest was really tight and it was difficult to breathe. Whenever I got a cold it went straight to my chest and it was worse than it would have been normally.” I quit smoking when I was 20, it will be a year in April. I quit
smoking for health reasons, I joined the gym, stopped smoking and noticed a huge difference. It was also for money reasons that I quit smoking, as I used to smoke over 20 a day so I had to buy 40 a day which was something like over £11.00 a day. I was sick of it! “I’ve been twice to the service for help. The first time I came I just used patches and inhalers it was really good and really helpful, but I didn’t feel it did enough for me and I felt in a bad mood and cranky all the time. The second time I came back another medication was recommended to me and within a few weeks, after the week with smoking I had a couple of draws and then I just stopped, as the smoking made me feel sick.” Since I stopped smoking my fitness has improved, I feel healthier, I feel more awake and I’m a lot better off financially, I bought a new car and that encouraged me to stop smoking as I knew I couldn’t keep up with both. I’ve got a daughter, who is 5 years old and I think from me
stopping smoking she has benefited from it as well. When she was born I was still smoking and even if I didn’t smoke near her, she would go into the room I had been smoking in and she could smell it on my clothes. So stopping smoking for her is one of the main reasons I quit. She says all the time “my daddy doesn’t smoke anymore” and to hear her say that is definitely an achievement and I know she is proud of me, that is worth it. I think if a child sees their parents smoke, I think it is a big influence on them, they will see it as ok for them to smoke and I definitely think it is a bad influence. I don’t miss smoking at all. I think for your family and for your health it would be best to stop smoking, because it just affects everybody not just yourself. Like Jonathan, many local people have found that ‘it’s all right to ask for help’. The Barnsley NHS Stop Smoking Service currently helps an average of 40 people to quit each week. For more information, drop into the Quitshop at 12-14 Eldon Street or call the Service on (01226) 737077.
NEWSAGENTS’ FEARS OVER CIG DISPLAYS BY EMMA SPENCER PLANS to ban cigarette displays will cripple local corner and paper shops, according to Barnsley newsagents. Cigarettes, tobacco and smoking products have to be stored under the counter and out of sight, under proposed legislation Newsagents say customers buying cigarettes often buy other goods in their shops, and if they lose that custom it will finish them. Robert Teal, owner of Vitesse on Church Street and Barnsley branch secretary of the National Federation of Retail Newsagents, says the move will only encourage people to buy smuggled
and counterfeit cigarettes. He said: “I can tell you categorically it will lead to the closure of newsagents in Barnsley. “There is no evidence anywhere to say moving the cigarettes reduces the levels of smoking. “When the display of tobacco was banned in Canada rates of people smoking the following year went up. “Counterfeit cigarettes are more dangerous with higher levels of tar and other products. “Also we don’t sell to under 18s but someone selling cigs in the pub isn’t bothered.” Mr Teal and the federation are encouraging their 90 members and those shops that aren’t members to write to their local MPs with their objec-
tions. Jeff Ennis, MP for Barnsley East and Mexborough, said: “There is a big campaign from newsagents and I can understand their concern. “There are a lot closing at
the moment and the issue needs careful consideration. “We have got to try to help newsagents stay open but then we have got the health issue.”

The family-run organisation, based at Maple House on Stocks Lane, has a team of six friendly staff members that can be trusted to explain complicated matters in simple terms to their clients. Strutt & Nightingale deal with IFAs and personal private pensions. They aim to maximise their clients’ pension funds by keeping a constant, daily eye on clients’ investments and change them as they see fit, at a level of risk chosen by the client. Because the firm is small, its dedicated fund managers are able to react quickly to the changing markets and restrict clients’ losses, unlike large investment houses. It is a strategy that clearly works well with the vast majority of Strutt & Nightingale’s clients’ pension funds beating industry averages over the last five year period. Every client matters to Strutt & Nightingale, which is why they give the same quality of service to more modest pension fund holders as they do to holders of large pension funds. For small investors, no other dedicated service has the strength, support, quality and track record. Director Jackie Cawthrow, said: “A pension is a long-term investment plan that should be managed properly, which is what we aim to do. “Every client matters to us as an individual so we have their best interests at heart when making decisions. “I would encourage anybody that has felt disappointed with their pension fund recently to contact us to see what improvements we could make.”

Leo Hague, three, who has spina bifida, and his brother Charlie, four, tackled the course with their mum Joanne. The boys ran for their nanna June McGuffie, who died of breast cancer in February, aged 61. “They’ve had a pretty traumatic year,” said Joanne, of Southgate, Gawber. “My marriage broke up and they lost their nanna who was quite a major part of their lives. Also their great aunt, Miriam Leach, died of cancer. “Cancer Research is very close to our hearts. They’re running for everyone that they have lost and that’s more than they should have done at that age.” The boys took part in the race at Durham, where they have family. “They’re active boys,” said Joanne. “It’s part of Leo’s condition that he should be as active as possible. He has a mild form of spina bifida. He has some nerve damage in his toes and problems with his ankles.” Leo also has hydrocephalus. “He’s tiny,” said Joanne. “He’s only the size of an 18-monthold even though he’s three but he’s fully mentally developed, he’s a chatty little boy.” To sponsor Joanne, Leo and Charlie, who is in reception at Gawber Primary School, visit www.justgiving.com/jo-hague

ANOTHER TON FOR TALENTED MICHAEL DARTON High School pupil Michael Burgess is at it again.
Top ton: Michael Burgess cracked his second ton in a Yorkshire shirt.
Fresh from his maiden century for Yorkshire Schools’ under-15s against Cleveland last month, the 15-year-old has cracked another century. This time, batting at number four, Burgess made 101 not out for Yorkshire under-15s second XI against Lancashire, to help the county side to 246 for seven. However, his innings proved in vain as the Red Rose County won with four balls to spare. Michael has now scored 397 runs for Yorkshire in seven innings at an average of 79.4. His efforts have been recognised by his selection for the county under-15 first XI tour of Surrey, Essex, Kent and Hertfordshire in August. He plays for Kexborough CC second XI in the Huddersfield League, where he opens the batting as well as keeping wicket.
Back again: Iain Hume pounds the training pitch as he prepares to get fully fit for the start of the new season. Boss Simon Davey is hoping that the striker will make up for lost time by banging in the goals. Training pictures by Jamie Lorriman.
Boss hopes Hume will weigh in with goals OAKWELL chief Simon Davey is planning to have £1m striker Iain Hume in his match-day squad for the mouth-watering Championship opener at Hillsborough on August 8. Davey hopes that Hume, who missed the majority of last season with a horrendous fractured skull injury, will weigh in with plenty of goals in the 2009 to 2010 campaign. He has said he will not wear a Petr Cech-type skull cap, saying “that is for rugby players!” Boss Davey added: “Iain’s a little bit heavy at the moment but that was to be expected consider-
ing the amount of time he’s been on the sidelines with what was a career-threatening injury. “But he has thrown himself into training from day one, and is heading balls and getting fully involved with every aspect of our training schedule. “We need to see him involved in some games and hopefully that will put a few demons to bed. “Of course, I’ll wince when he goes in for that first 50-50 challenge with his head, but that’s understandable and there is no doubt Iain will be keen to show he’s recovered. “He’s not pulled out of a chal-
lenge and I don’t expect him to when the matches start. “Mentally he just wants to get back playing competitively. “If he goes well in the pre-season fixtures then, like the rest of the first team squad, he’ll be a contender to start the opening day match against our local rivals Sheffield Wednesday. “Everything’s a possibility for him. “We’ll see how he goes in the next few weeks but hopefully he’ll be in our starting XI when the new season kicks off.”
Ex-Barnsley players turn their hands to managerial positions FORMER Oakwell hero Ian Banks is relishing his role as manager of nonleague AFC Emley. The ex-midfield ace, part of Barnsley’s memorable early 1980s side, oversaw his club’s first pre-season training sessions this week. Banksy will take his Emley team to Runcorn Linnetts in the preliminary round of the FA Cup on August 15, but before then they host two friendlies against Huddersfield (Friday, July 17) and Rotherham (Tuesday, August 4). I Meanwhile, ex-Barnsley player, 34-year-old Neil Shipperley, has been
appointed manager of Bedfont FC, who play in
the Combined Counties Premier League.
