BY KATE PICKLES AN EX-MINER is looking forward to watching the snooker and reading the Chronicle after an operation restored his sight, 57 years after he lost it in a pit accident. Eric Harrison, 85, lost the sight in his right eye when a piece of stone pierced his pupil in a roof collapse at Wharncliffe Woodmoor Colliery in 1952. The sight in his other eye also deteriorated over the years to the extent that he had to ‘feel’ his way around his own house. Eric was told the damage in his right eye was permanent and was never offered any treatment until he had an operation to remove a cataract from his left eye earlier this year. “I had the operation and my sight improved but then a membrane grew over the pupil. I went to the opticians and at the same appointment he looked at my right eye as well. “He said there was a large cataract which could be removed

by surgery and wrote to my GP who arranged the operation. I couldn’t believe it.” Eric had the operation last month and went to pick up his first pair of glasses from the optician. He said: “I think it’s a miracle. It has completely changed my life. I loved reading but haven’t been able to read anything. I used to get Brenda to read the Chronicle to me but now I can read it myself. I couldn’t go to the supermarket anymore because I used to knock things over with the trolley so it’s great to be able to do simple things again. I’m still getting used to everything, it’s very strange.” Wife Brenda, 75, said the operations had completely changed their lives together. “I’ve still been leading him about, telling him where things like the kerb are and he keeps saying ‘I can see it’. We can go out and do things together now which we never could before. We can’t thank the opticians and the hospital enough.”

IAN HOPES TO COIN IT IN WITH HIS 20P PIECE BY KATE PICKLES AN ELSECAR man thinks he could be minted after finding a rare 20p which could be worth thousands of pounds.

Boxing clever: Pipers Grove Primary School pupil Charlotte Plant who won the school matchbox competition. Pupils had to see how many different items could be fitted into a matchbox. Charlotte fitted 95 items into the matchbox which won her a gift voucher to be used at WH Smith.

Ian Lipscombe had been rummaging in his pocket for change when one of the coins stood out among the rest. “It was a bit shinier than all the others. “I looked again and I couldn’t see a date on it but just thought I couldn’t be looking properly. I went into the bank in Wombwell and asked them to look at it. “The manager even came out but they couldn’t see a date either.” The coin is believed to be one of between 50,000 and 200,000 made in error last year when the date was moved from the tails to the head’s side. The 20 pence pieces without a date were created by accidentally pairing up the new tail’s side with the old heads meaning no date appeared at all. Mistakes are so rare that Charles II was on the throne the last time an undated coin entered circulation in 1672. Now the ‘mules’, the term for a coin with mismatched sides, have been selling for up to £5,000 on auction site eBay. But coin dealer Andrew Gillis, of Roy Kilner Road, Wombwell, believes they are not worth the hype. “When you talk about mill coinage they are machine made so every one is the

‘It was a bit shinier than all the others. I looked again and I couldn’t see a date on it but just thought I couldn’t be looking properly’ same. When you look at a Victorian penny with Britannia on the back then there were a few coins where the sea level varied. One sold for £60,000 but there were only six of them not 200,000. “It’s all about supply and demand.” A Royal Mint spokesman confirmed a small number of coins had been incorrectly struck using the obverse from the previous design. “The issue has now been resolved and the Royal Mint would like to reassure members of the public that these coins are legal tender.” But Ian has no intention of putting his 20p towards a loaf of bread. “I’m going to keep hold of it for now but if it turns out to be worth £1,000 then I think I’d sell it and take the family on holiday.”

LITTER BUGS MAKE GARDENS A REAL TIP LITTER bugs are making a mess of the new Mandela Gardens in the town centre. Several people have contacted the Chronicle complaining about the litter there. One said: “It’s like sitting in a rubbish tip.” There have also been complaints about the behaviour of gangs of youths who play football on the grass. Barnsley already had a £1m litter bill before the gardens opened. Town centre councillor Margaret Bruff said: “It’s not the council’s fault, it’s the dirty buggers who keep dropping litter. “It’s not fair to blame our Neighbourhood Pride team. “It’s young people who

A student has designed the dress for a finalist in the Miss England competition. Annabelle Greaves, 22, of Doncaster Road, was put forward by her college tutor to enter the competition to design a dress. Her design will be worn by finalist Suzi Cumming, already crowned ‘Miss

Hertfordshire’. Annabelle, who found out last week she has passed her course at Barnsley College with three distinctions, has not met her model yet. If Miss Hertfordshire wins Miss England on July 20, Annabelle will design her dress for the Miss World competition.

often get the blame. But it’s not all young people. I’ve seen a lot of youngsters using it responsibly, and they say to me ‘we know, we will take our rubbish with us’. “We really need everyone in Barnsley to start taking a bit of pride in it, because it’s an absolutely beautiful little spot.” The garden looked tidy when the Chronicle checked it. Coun Roy Miller said: “The town centre team has worked hard to clean it every day. “We spend around £1m per year picking litter up across the borough. “Since we took responsibility for maintenance of the site on June 1, our services have been extremely active in this area, with

regular daily litter picks befitting its prime location.” There are also regular enforcement patrols, he added, and several people have received £75 penal-

ties for littering Mandela Gardens. The gardens were refurbished as part of the multi-million pound Civic project and attracts lots of young people.

Advertiser’s Announcement

Think you can’t quit smoking? That’s what Jonathan thought... Jonathan Rollinson, a 21year-old hairdresser, had doubts about stopping smoking. This is how he began the last 10 smokefree months – one day at a time… I first started smoking in the first teenage years at school. I started smoking because all my friends were smoking. I smoked more from leaving school, as I think being able to smoke made me smoke more. My family didn’t know that I smoked until I was 16, my mum could smell it on me I think from the start. But when I was 16 I told them that I smoked – nothing was said to me as they are smokers themselves. They weren’t impressed or happy that I smoked, but at 16 I could buy my own cigs so there was nothing they could really say. “I found lots of health problems from smoking even at the start, I noticed my breathing wasn’t as good, I felt it definitely held me back, I could tell that I smoked because if I walked a long distance, jogged or ran I could feel that my chest was really tight and it was difficult to breathe. Whenever I got a cold it went straight to my chest and it was worse than it would have been normally.” I quit smoking when I was 20, it will be a year in April. I quit

smoking for health reasons, I joined the gym, stopped smoking and noticed a huge difference. It was also for money reasons that I quit smoking, as I used to smoke over 20 a day so I had to buy 40 a day which was something like over £11.00 a day. I was sick of it! “I’ve been twice to the service for help. The first time I came I just used patches and inhalers it was really good and really helpful, but I didn’t feel it did enough for me and I felt in a bad mood and cranky all the time. The second time I came back another medication was recommended to me and within a few weeks, after the week with smoking I had a couple of draws and then I just stopped, as the smoking made me feel sick.” Since I stopped smoking my fitness has improved, I feel healthier, I feel more awake and I’m a lot better off financially, I bought a new car and that encouraged me to stop smoking as I knew I couldn’t keep up with both. I’ve got a daughter, who is 5 years old and I think from me

stopping smoking she has benefited from it as well. When she was born I was still smoking and even if I didn’t smoke near her, she would go into the room I had been smoking in and she could smell it on my clothes. So stopping smoking for her is one of the main reasons I quit. She says all the time “my daddy doesn’t smoke anymore” and to hear her say that is definitely an achievement and I know she is proud of me, that is worth it. I think if a child sees their parents smoke, I think it is a big influence on them, they will see it as ok for them to smoke and I definitely think it is a bad influence. I don’t miss smoking at all. I think for your family and for your health it would be best to stop smoking, because it just affects everybody not just yourself. Like Jonathan, many local people have found that ‘it’s all right to ask for help’. The Barnsley NHS Stop Smoking Service currently helps an average of 40 people to quit each week. For more information, drop into the Quitshop at 12-14 Eldon Street or call the Service on (01226) 737077.

CHAMBER CHIEF SEEKS TO REBUILD ITS MEMBERSHIP BY MIKE COTTON

‘Our objective is to build the membership back up, to deliver what the membership wants, and to get the membership to be the strong voice of business in the Barnsley and Rotherham area’

BARNSLEY and Rotherham Chamber of Commerce must do more to support Barnsley firms tackle the credit crunch, the new president told the Chronicle. Former president Tracey Lally resigned last month saying she did not feel the chamber was doing enough to help Barnsley combat the recession, and because membership had fallen dramatically. New president Richard Horner promised to listen to the concerns Tracey raised, and take action on them. He said: “It hasn’t been for the want of trying, but she does make a very valid point. “We want to make sure that Tracey’s concerns are looked at and that she is listened to.” About 1,100 Barnsley firms were members when the Barnsley chamber merged with Rotherham two years ago. That figure has dropped to fewer than 500. Former member and Barnsley councillor Bill Gaunt was opposed to the merger. He said: “The two chambers were very different. “Barnsley was a representative organisation, Rotherham was all

President: Richard Horner

about selling its services to its members. It had membership of about 40 per cent of Rotherham’s eligible firms. Barnsley was at about 25 per cent — still very high. “The business plan just didn’t work in my opinion. It was all about using Rotherham’s income to generate membership, and bring Barnsley up to 40 per cent. “That just didn’t happen.” Mr Horner said: “There is no advantage in splitting the chamber. I think the desire is to make sure the merged chambers work. “Our objective is to build the

membership back up, to deliver what the membership wants, and to get the membership to be the strong voice of business in the Barnsley and Rotherham area. “There is a lot of good happening, we just need to refocus a little bit.” Tracey Lally said she hoped to become active in the chamber again, but not until action had been taken on the points she raised. She said: “Richard Horner is the new president. I know he is committed to making sure this works. I remain committed to the chamber as a voice for business in Barnsley.”

Full night service: We provide Emergency Care and Advice for your pet – 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year at our main clinic and this is by our own experienced and dedicated team of Vets and Nurses. (Some vet practices now use Night Emergency Clinics which are often far away, with no detailed patient notes or regular vets.) Experience counts: We’ve been caring for pets in South Yorkshire for over 30 years, still overseen by our Clinical Director Anthony D Duffy, available to offer a second opinion or reassurance if needed.

Over-feeding our pets with big portions, leftover food or lots of treats can cause weight gain, which in turn can lead to a string of health problems. And it’s not just overfeeding our pets that can cause them to pile on a few pounds – not exercising your pet enough can also lead to them becoming obese. If you suspect your pet has become a little too cuddly, vet Tony Duffy, of the Abbey Veterinary Group, has some advice to help battle the bulge. “Increasing your pets exercise will help them to lose weight,” says Tony. “But before doing this it is best to ask your vet to give your pet a thorough physical examination to rule out any possible underlying causes for your pets weight gain and inactivity. “Following this your vet may well advise careful and controlled dieting with support and advice from the qualified veterinary nurse team. “These ‘Weight Control

More bad than good: Too many treats can lead to health problems for your pet.

“One of the best ways to help your pet lose weight is the same as for us – cutting out the snacks or treats between meals.

Clinics’ are free at Abbey Vets. Special diets are available to help your pet lose weight. “Unfortunately the truth is that if your pet has been examined, diagnosed overweight and no underlying medical cause of obesity is found, then your pet is being given too much food. “Your pet should be fed to its ideal weight, what your pet should weigh not what it currently weighs. “All meals should be carefully weighed or measured. “Your vet will advise on your pets ideal weight which will depend on breed, age etc.

WE ALL like to spoil our pets from time to time, with a treat here and a little left over food there, but too many treats could do more bad than good.

RISING STARS GOING CONTINENTAL FOR GB TOP junior athletes Luke Cutts and Adele Lassu both had plenty to celebrate after the England AAA under-23 Championships. Not only did the pair confirm their status as two of the country’s best juniors at Bedford International Stadium, but they both secured a seat on the plane to Lithuania for the forthcoming European under-23 Championships. It will be the second time polevaulter Luke, from Thurnscoe, and Monk Bretton girl Adele have competed in the Europeans having gained Great Britain selection to the under-20 Championships in Holland back in 2007. Cutts, 21, is the number one under-23 in the coun-

try and number two at senior level behind Steve Lewis, but he is also ranked second in the under-23s in Europe. With that in mind, Cutts says he would be disappointed not to return with a top three finish. “This will be my second European Championships and I am looking forward to it,” he said. “I will be going there as one of the favourites and because of that I am hoping I can at least come home with a medal.” Although Steve Lewis has jumped higher than Luke this year, and is regarded as Britain’s number one, the Barnsley man has been the more consistent performer and admits there is much more to come. Meanwhile, Adele, 20, won the high jump for the fourth time in the last five years when she equalled her personal best of 1.82m. She is ranked number one under-23 and fourth at senior level in this country but her rankings in Europe place her in the top seven. Adele is hoping to take these championships by storm. To do that, she will have to jump a new personal best height of at least 1.86m.
