5 Flood defences to be improved BY LYNSEY BRADFORD THOUSANDS of pounds are to be spent on improving flood defences across the Cudworth area. Money left over from other floodrelated improvements in the town are being used to create more defences and around £65,000 has been earmarked for Grimethorpe, Brierley and Cudworth. It will be used to carry out improvements and repair work to collapsed culverts on Brierley Road and Lilydene Avenue in Grimethorpe, and to create a ‘trash screen’ next to the Boulder Bridge recycling area at Carlton Marsh Nature Reserve. It follows an under-spend by Barnsley Council of about £280,000 as part of funding approved for flood projects across the borough last year.

Jack plants time capsule at school
BY ADAM CIVICO LIFESAVERS Keith and Anna Parker were last week reunited with the man who they kept alive. The father and daughter were first on the scene when Brian Winstanley collapsed on a motorway bridge after suffering a severe heart attack. Their quick actions got his heart going again and after several weeks in hospital and ‘dying’ twice he is now recovering at home in Darton. The retired colliery electrical engineer, aged 74, read in the Chronicle about Keith and Anna’s actions and knew he was the man they had saved. He wanted to meet the couple to say thank you and were reunited last week. Brian, of Meadow Lane, Darton, said he can remember little of the day he collapsed. “I don’t remember getting out of bed or having my breakfast. “Normally I go up to the Spar for a paper and I go in the car but I shouted to my wife I was going to walk. “I don’t remember coming out of the house or walking up Bence Lane. “Next thing I knew I was waking
up in intensive care.” His heart had stopped and Keith and Anna used a defibrillator to get it going before the ambulance arrived. Keith spent several weeks in hospital and had a pacemaker and defibrillator fitted in his chest. “I was ‘dead’ twice. I never saw St Peter but somebody sent me back. It is nice to be home.” He welcomed the chance to thank his lifesavers. After the meeting he said: “There’s no doubt that they are some of the people who saved my life. Without them I would not be here.” Keith and Anna are ambulance service volunteers and act as ‘community first responders’. Brian said Keith told him he was now looking a better colour. Anna, a student paramedic, said it was unusual to meet a patient after recovery. “It’s routine to drop people off and you never see them again. “We accept Brian’s thanks but that is why we volunteer, saving somebody’s life is part of it. “We got there first but then we passed him on to the ambulance crew. Without their intervention it could have been a different outcome.”

Think you can’t quit smoking? That’s what Jonathan thought... Jonathan Rollinson, a 21year-old hairdresser, had doubts about stopping smoking. This is how he began the last 10 smokefree months – one day at a time… I first started smoking in the first teenage years at school. I started smoking because all my friends were smoking. I smoked more from leaving school, as I think being able to smoke made me smoke more. My family didn’t know that I smoked until I was 16, my mum could smell it on me I think from the start. But when I was 16 I told them that I smoked – nothing was said to me as they are smokers themselves. They weren’t impressed or happy that I smoked, but at 16 I could buy my own cigs so there was nothing they could really say. “I found lots of health problems from smoking even at the start, I noticed my breathing wasn’t as good, I felt it definitely held me back, I could tell that I smoked because if I walked a long distance, jogged or ran I could feel that my chest was really tight and it was difficult to breathe. Whenever I got a cold it went straight to my chest and it was worse than it would have been normally.” I quit smoking when I was 20, it will be a year in April. I quit
smoking for health reasons, I joined the gym, stopped smoking and noticed a huge difference. It was also for money reasons that I quit smoking, as I used to smoke over 20 a day so I had to buy 40 a day which was something like over £11.00 a day. I was sick of it! “I’ve been twice to the service for help. The first time I came I just used patches and inhalers it was really good and really helpful, but I didn’t feel it did enough for me and I felt in a bad mood and cranky all the time. The second time I came back another medication was recommended to me and within a few weeks, after the week with smoking I had a couple of draws and then I just stopped, as the smoking made me feel sick.” Since I stopped smoking my fitness has improved, I feel healthier, I feel more awake and I’m a lot better off financially, I bought a new car and that encouraged me to stop smoking as I knew I couldn’t keep up with both. I’ve got a daughter, who is 5 years old and I think from me
stopping smoking she has benefited from it as well. When she was born I was still smoking and even if I didn’t smoke near her, she would go into the room I had been smoking in and she could smell it on my clothes. So stopping smoking for her is one of the main reasons I quit. She says all the time “my daddy doesn’t smoke anymore” and to hear her say that is definitely an achievement and I know she is proud of me, that is worth it. I think if a child sees their parents smoke, I think it is a big influence on them, they will see it as ok for them to smoke and I definitely think it is a bad influence. I don’t miss smoking at all. I think for your family and for your health it would be best to stop smoking, because it just affects everybody not just yourself. Like Jonathan, many local people have found that ‘it’s all right to ask for help’. The Barnsley NHS Stop Smoking Service currently helps an average of 40 people to quit each week. For more information, drop into the Quitshop at 12-14 Eldon Street or call the Service on (01226) 737077.

Wombwell firm wins Queen’s award A WOMBWELL maker of doors for lifts has won the Queen’s Award for Enterprise and International Trade. Sematic UK at Meadow Gate, Valley Park, will receive the award at a ceremony in London next month. Managing director Stephen Brunton said: “We did not win the Queen’s Award for one specific contract. “It was for continuous growth over 20 years and, specifically, due to doubling our turnover during three years. “During the difficult economic climate, winning the award has come as a boost primarily to Sematic UK but also the whole operation.” The company employs about 60 at Wombwell and has designed doors for lifts at the Royal Opera House, Royal Horticultural Society, Houses of Parliament and Buckingham Palace. It also produced doors for the fastest passenger lift in the UK at BT Tower. The lift travels at sevenand-a-half metres a second. The firm exports to Australia, the continent, Scandinavia and the Eastern bloc. About 19 senior managers from Italy, China, Mexico, Hungary, the United States and Germany attended a two-day convention organised by the firm’s Italian parent company, the Sematic Group. Mayor of Barnsley, Coun John Parkinson, made a presentation to chairman Dr Ing Roberto Zappa to mark the group’s 50th anniversary. The company moved to Wombwell about 12 years ago.

Reprising a role: Nick Gillott as Jesus in the Mystery Plays.
MYSTERY AS NICK PLAYS THE SAVIOUR BARNSLEY actor Nick Gillott has tackled bigger roles than that of Jesus in the Mystery Plays – but none so demanding. The Barnsley Council project manager has returned to the role he first played in the Worsbrough Mystery Plays of 1995 with repeat performances in 1998 and 2000. Now after numerous rehearsals, he’s ready to reprise the role again as the mystery plays of mediaeval days are recreated at Monk Bretton Priory from June 29 to July 12. The fact he’s a Catholic is not a relevant factor in Nick’s view. “I always describe myself as a Christian first and a Catholic second,” he said. “But the truth is that mystery plays do not set out to preach or convert. “What they do do, is recreate Bible stories in
the earliest form of theatre. “In doing so, they introduce people to Bible characters as they may have been introduced to their forebears countless years ago. “I think it is true that many of those involved in the plays may not be religious but they are good people. “The mysteries have resulted in the formation of a large family prepared to give freely of time, efforts and enthusiasm for a massive event in community theatre. “Their commitment helps me in my role.” The role, however, brings its problems. Nick says: “It can be uncomfortable particularly if it’s cold and wet and I sometimes feel drained as I’m taken down from the cross. “On the other hand, it can be wonderfully
rewarding particularly when you see people have been moved.” Nick, 37, first trod the stage at Loughborough University in 1993 and his acting accomplishments are many. Besides many performances locally, he’s appeared on TV’s A Question of Sport with footballing mystery guest Dean Windass and in a cameo role for the ITV
programme The Wedge, having composed music for the film. He also appeared in the semi-professional production of the football-related play United On A Wednesday Night written by Radio Sheffield’s Roni Robinson and performed at the Crucible. Perhaps his most pleasant accolade was achieved last year when his
appearance with Wakefield Little Theatre in Death of a Salesman in the Wakefield Drama Festival was followed by similar success in the UK All Winners Festival, held in the Isle of Man. Nick received the adjudicator’s award for best acting performance from Sir Derek Jacobi and has both met and corresponded with him since.

Join us at 2pm in the grounds of the Hospice, where we will be displaying hundreds of ribbons in a myriad of colours, each one representing the life of someone special. You are invited to dedicate a ribbon for those special people who have added colour to your life. There will be music, singing, laughter and a few tears we’re sure, but we will be joining together to celebrate some heartfelt memories and the fact that we have a local hospice providing vital care for the people of Barnsley. For further information about any of the above, please contact us on 01226 244244 or email firstname.lastname@example.org

Last laugh for Elsecar
DOWNS IS ON THE UP
THE Premier Division match at Armroyd Lane between Elsecar A and Barnsley’s second string had all the hallmarks of a typical local derby. Four hundred runs on show, 17 wickets and plenty of antagonism as the fierce rivalry between the two sides spilled over at one stage. However, it was Elsecar who had the last laugh, as the Shaw Lane outfit fell short in their run chase by ten runs. Mark Beardshall failed to keep his emotions in check. It appeared that the Shaw Lane skipper was guilty of gifting Elsecar five penalty runs by arguing with the umpire. Those runs ultimately proved costly. The experienced but volatile Beardshall has been charged with guiding the club’s promising junior players through to the first team. Yet some of the spectators felt his actions were not befitting of a captain.

Freak warm-up injury for DO YOU HAVE A SECURED OR PERSONAL LOAN? England bowler Brunt Competition
The chosen one… Barnsley’s Dandiest Dog of 2009 revealed
KATHERINE Brunt was looking forward to this month’s World Twenty20 Championships with England – following her World Cup-winning exploits at the start of the year. However, the 23-year-old suffered a setback when she sustained a freak injury in the warm-up to the group stage match against Sri Lanka. Brunt was backing up behind the stumps to field a throw but the ball took an unexpected bounce and struck her in the face. Fortunately, X-rays revealed no break but left her with severe bruising. It meant ‘12th man’ Isa Guha got the nod to replace Kath in the game and, as so often happens, rubbed salt into Brunt’s wounds by taking remarkable figures of two for four from four overs, two of which were maidens.

The ten-year-old, who will appear in front of 50,000 spectators, has been chosen alongside other year eight boys from around the country as a ‘star of the future’. Understandably, Reece is excited but slightly nervous: “It’s not the first time I have been to the stadium but it will be my first ride there,” he said. “I’m excited but nervous at the same time.” Dad Aidan Downs says it will be a proud moment for the family. He added: “It’s a great honour for Reece and we are really proud of him but we are very nervous as well. “Unfortunately we only have one bike so we are hoping it holds together and runs well as it would be a great shame if he missed out on the day.” For the Silkstone school pupil, it’s another step on the way to becoming a professional rider.
