STRIPPED ROOF HAS A STEELY RETURN BY JOANNE WRIGHT A PENISTONE church that had almost all the lead stripped from its roof by thieves has been repaired thanks to donations from the community. St John’s Church, Shrew sbur y Road, was lef t w ith almost £100,000 of damage w hen vandals tore lead off the roof to sell af ter the price of scrap metal soared last year. The church was targeted eight times in six months and the new ly refurbished k itchen area was lef t vulnerable to the weather. T he extent of the damage meant the bill for the repairs was more than the church’s insurance cover so the team turned to its parishioners for help. Members of the community raised the extra £10,000 to fit the new stainless-steel roof through events includ-

ing monthly lunches and the annual ‘Ar t at the Altar ’ show. Fr David Hopk in, the vicar of St John’s, said: “T he response from the community was wonderful, we are grateful to ever yone w ho helped in any way. “It has tak en a w hile to get here and we still have to find more money to finish off the nave, w hich is currently covered in a hardwearing felt, but we are almost there. “The trouble w ith a building lik e this is that there are ongoing problems that must be paid for, the next thing w ill be the heating.” Church warden Tony White project managed all the repair work s. He said: “It is a great relief to have it finished. “We have tried to maintain the visual integrity of the Grade I listed building and, in time, the steel w ill weather to look lik e lead.”

She tells us about her journey: ‘’I had looked into going to University before but I’d not quite found the right course – until I found this one. I study the course part-time so that I can work which means I can still earn while I’m studying. Before coming to University, I completed the BTEC National Diploma in Early Years and then I started working at Little Jo’s Day Nursery. I worked in the toddler unit for a year and then pre-school for two years before becoming pre-school coordinator. Since being on the course I have learnt a lot more about myself, as well as much more in-depth learning around children. The course has given me so much. It’s helpful to liaise with other professionals, just like me. It has boosted my confidence, in and out of work immensely. This has recently resulted in my promotion to Lead Practitioner and given me the drive to continuously improve myself. My aspirations for the future have changed due to doing this course. As I have gained confidence, I want so much more, I can possibly even see myself managing a Nursery now. I want to gain my Early Years Professional Status and who knows after that, I enjoy University so much, I may even continue to study. Although the work is hard at times, it’s all worth it and got me to where I am today. The staff at the Barnsley Campus are all really friendly and easy to get along with, it’s not a bit like school. The facilities at the Campus are good too, having a library with available computers is really helpful. I get great support from tutors and keep in contact with them by email. Personal tutorials give me the advice I need to take the pressure off and get me back on track when I need help. A big help for me is having my critical friendship group, who have also given me lots of support and encouragement throughout, they make it all worthwhile.’’

Patients fight the fat PATIENTS in Barnsley are fighting obesity at the Metrodome. Over 300 patients have signed up for the personalised fitness sessions. GPS and practice nurses refer patients for the 12week programme which starts with an assessment by an exercise advisor, . Weight, blood pressure, body mass index and lung capacity are measured before patients receive a tailor-made programme. The exercise classes can be taken by patients with weight or mental health problems and low risk conditions like asthma. When patients complete

the 24 sessions they are offered a pay-as-you-go membership to the Metrodome.

“If people come across a nest, which looks like a pile of twigs and leaves, they should leave it, but if they do disturb it and a large hedgehog comes running out, they should grab that hedgehog and put it in a large box. “Then they should check the nest for babies and if there are, they should pick up the nest and babies and put them in the box with the mum, then ring us. “Never use your bare hands to pick up a baby hedgehog, use gloves, because otherwise your scent goes on to them and the mother will kill them.” He said he was hopeful the litter will survive and will eventually be released back into the wild.

Think you can’t quit smoking? That’s what Jonathan thought... Jonathan Rollinson, a 21year-old hairdresser, had doubts about stopping smoking. This is how he began the last 10 smokefree months – one day at a time… I first started smoking in the first teenage years at school. I started smoking because all my friends were smoking. I smoked more from leaving school, as I think being able to smoke made me smoke more. My family didn’t know that I smoked until I was 16, my mum could smell it on me I think from the start. But when I was 16 I told them that I smoked – nothing was said to me as they are smokers themselves. They weren’t impressed or happy that I smoked, but at 16 I could buy my own cigs so there was nothing they could really say. “I found lots of health problems from smoking even at the start, I noticed my breathing wasn’t as good, I felt it definitely held me back, I could tell that I smoked because if I walked a long distance, jogged or ran I could feel that my chest was really tight and it was difficult to breathe. Whenever I got a cold it went straight to my chest and it was worse than it would have been normally.” I quit smoking when I was 20, it will be a year in April. I quit

smoking for health reasons, I joined the gym, stopped smoking and noticed a huge difference. It was also for money reasons that I quit smoking, as I used to smoke over 20 a day so I had to buy 40 a day which was something like over £11.00 a day. I was sick of it! “I’ve been twice to the service for help. The first time I came I just used patches and inhalers it was really good and really helpful, but I didn’t feel it did enough for me and I felt in a bad mood and cranky all the time. The second time I came back another medication was recommended to me and within a few weeks, after the week with smoking I had a couple of draws and then I just stopped, as the smoking made me feel sick.” Since I stopped smoking my fitness has improved, I feel healthier, I feel more awake and I’m a lot better off financially, I bought a new car and that encouraged me to stop smoking as I knew I couldn’t keep up with both. I’ve got a daughter, who is 5 years old and I think from me

stopping smoking she has benefited from it as well. When she was born I was still smoking and even if I didn’t smoke near her, she would go into the room I had been smoking in and she could smell it on my clothes. So stopping smoking for her is one of the main reasons I quit. She says all the time “my daddy doesn’t smoke anymore” and to hear her say that is definitely an achievement and I know she is proud of me, that is worth it. I think if a child sees their parents smoke, I think it is a big influence on them, they will see it as ok for them to smoke and I definitely think it is a bad influence. I don’t miss smoking at all. I think for your family and for your health it would be best to stop smoking, because it just affects everybody not just yourself. Like Jonathan, many local people have found that ‘it’s all right to ask for help’. The Barnsley NHS Stop Smoking Service currently helps an average of 40 people to quit each week. The number of teenagers using the pool has doubled since ‘Mi Cards’ that give them free entry were introduced. Bosses say it is great news but have admitted the scale of the surge has caught them on the hop – and upset some swimmers. After the Chronicle reported on the chaos last week the Metrodome’s management has revised the swimming timetable to limit when free swimming is available. The Metrodome is run by Barnsley Premier Leisure, on behalf of the council.

Chief executive James Starbuck said the number of teenagers using the Metrodome had gone up by 100 per cent – twice as much as anticipated. “That’s fantastic but we have had to react to that.” He said the pool timetable was being ‘tweaked’ in response to the high demand. “We have three major groups: Families with younger children who want to be able to come and have fun and play; people coming for lessons and, importantly, the teenage market.” Changes to the timetable would allow different people to come and enjoy themselves without upsetting others, he said. As well as a jam-packed pool the ‘Mi Card’ offer had led to large queues and problems in some of the changing rooms.

Blooming great flower show HORTICULTURIST from Hoyland scooped a SilverGilt award at the first attempt when he exhibited at the Chelsea Flower Show. Steve Hickman wowed judges with his agapanthus and tulbaghia display at the Royal Horticultural Society show and believed the weather was all that stopped him landing gold. “We were very surprised to do so well,” said the 52-year-old who runs the Hoyland Plant Centre with wife Elaine. “We thought we would be up for silver so to do better than we hoped is great. “The only reason I think we didn’t get a gold is because the cut flowers didn’t open because of the weather.” The couple had an impressive 900 flowers on show in the Great Pavilion during the sellout show last week. Steve started growing agapanthus 15 years ago when his daughter bought him one for his birthday, since then he has amassed a collection

FAMILY FIGHTS HOUSING FIRM’S WINDOW POLICY MARIA MacGowan was horrified when she saw her five-year-old son standing on the window ledge of his bedroom. Cole, who has behavioural problems, had opened the window, climbed outside and was on the point of falling or jumping. Maria and her husband, Wayne, managed to get him away from the window – but that’s when the problems with Berneslai Homes started. Staff told them that putting a safety lock on the window would be against regulations. The couple, of Harold Avenue, Lundwood, refused to take ‘no’ for an answer. The authorities and councillors were bombarded with complaints and queries and the family have now won their campaign. Maria said: “Berneslai Homes have had the cheek to say we should be keeping an eye on our kids, but I have another child and a disabled husband. “I put a complaint to Berneslai Homes about the window but their reply was that it was not their policy to fit locks on upstairs windows due to fire hazard.

They tried to blame the fire service by trying to tell me it is the law not to have locks, but this was not the case. “I had letters sent to Berneslai Homes from my doctor, got my kid’s school involved and the social services, but Berneslai Homes would still not budge. “I emailed the Glass and Glazing Federation to find out what the building regulations were. “But the federation said locks and child restrictors

can be installed on all windows.” Last week a Berneslai Homes official called to say a lock would be fitted: “It just shows if you keep fighting you can get what you want,” Maria added. A spokesperson for Berneslai Homes said: “We can confirm that we have visited the property and agreed because of the special needs of our customer, that in this instance window locks to the up stairs of the property will be fitted.”

The 26-year-old, who was a non-travelling reserve for Great Britain’s bronze medal-winning team at the Beijing Paralympics last summer, this time helped his side to a 69-49 win over Germany in the third-place play-off. Sagar’s week had got off to a terrible start when he and his team-mates suffered a heavy defeat to old rivals USA, in a re-run of the Beijing bronze medal match. The British team then threw away a nine-point lead against Beijing champions Australia. But the GB squad came roaring back to earn third place and Barnsley man Sagar, who plays for Oldham Owls, believes the spirit shown by the side ensures the future is bright. “All is well at the moment – there is a good bunch of lads in the team and we are all training together and enjoying it at the moment,”
