NHS TRIES BRIBES TO HELP QUITTERS selling, peer support and other therapies,” she said. “We can offer support and a range of therapies through our stop smoking service in Barnsley. “This scheme encourages people to quit at the same time as someone they know creating an extra level of support in their personal life and increasing their chances of being successful in their attempt to quit.” It is estimated smoking causes 471 deaths in Barnsley every year and public health consultant Dr Frances Clement said it was important the prob-
lem was tackled. “We’re investing more each year in stop smoking services to support people in their journey to quit. “It’s not an easy thing to do but quitting smoking is the single greatest improvement you can make to your health and the health of those around you.” The launch of a local incentive scheme follows a report by Health England showing rewards and incentives were an effective way of encouraging healthy behaviour. NHS Barnsley is giving £15 High Street vouchers to people who sign up to stop smoking services with a friend. Department of Health figures showed the number of people who had stopped smoking had fallen in the town since the new year.
The number of smokers who have stopped, when tested at four weeks, has dropped from 45 per cent to 41 per cent compared to the national average of 49 per cent. And numbers of people setting quit dates dropped 28 per cent from 2,178 to 1,562. Stop smoking advisor Rachel Foster said the scheme was designed to give smokers extra support when quitting. “The most effective way to give up smoking is using a combination of coun-

Wax on, wax off: Holly Lingard washed cars in her bikini for charity.
Bikini babe is Miss Charity BIKINI babe Hollie Lingard won a beauty contest — thanks to her efforts with a bucket and sponge. She was a contestant in the Miss Sheffield competition and beat 30 glamour girls to be named Miss Charity because of her fund-raising. Soaper star Hollie and college pals Mollie Stockdale and Nessa Yates, all 17, donned their swimwear and did a car wash for the beauty pageant’s charity, The Autistic Society. The trio turned heads when they set up shop on Wakefield Road and raised about £150. That was enough to earn Hollie, of
Ingleton Mews, Smithies, the title. Travel and tourism student Hollie said: “I felt really happy and was so excited but it was such hard work because we had to practise in our heels all day.” The event was Hollie’s first contest and said the competition was tough. “It was a bit daunting. I was nervous on stage and could feel all the adrenaline. My teeth were shaking.” Hollie will now go on to compete in the Miss Models final in London. And there’s good news fellas — she’s planning another bikini car wash.
X FACTOR REJECTS VOW NOT TO GIVE UP Class act: Girl band the Poppi Chix. Picture: Scott Bairstow
BY CARLA GEORGE A LOCAL girl band will not give up despite failing to get through to the second auditions of this year’s X Factor. The Poppi Chix, named after the Tall Poppy singing and dance studios, where they were given the thumbs up after the first auditions in Manchester but failed to reach the third round. Known throughout Barnsley for their charity and gala performances, the girls say they are not disappointed just glad of the experience. Natalie Venters, 16, of Schofield Drive, Darfield, said: “We have got so much going on at the moment anyway. “Myself and Ebony are taking our GCSEs and we have plenty of gigs to rehearse for. “It would have been good to get through to the live X Factor auditions but the experience was amazing and we are looking at it as a learning curve.” New member, Megan
Smith, 16, of Sheffield, said: “The auditions were surreal. I made friends with Stephanie McMichael – a contestant in Big Brother 2008 – and she saved me a seat and gave me her mobile number, it was amazing.” The Chix are now focusing their energy on rehearsals for a concert at The Fleets in aid of the vic-
tims of the Chernobyl disaster. Ebony Benson, 16, of Barnwell Crescent, Wombwell, said: “Singing and performing is the only thing we want to do and we will carry on in whatever capacity we can.” The next performance is at The Fleets, Barnsley, tonight at 7pm.

Horsing around at the Civic
SENT A PENNY IN THE POST
BY MIKE COTTON TWO horse-themed shows designed to introduce children to the theatre are on at the Civic this week. Hoof!, a physical theatre show for children aged three to ten will be performed on Sunday May 17 at 2.30pm. From tomororw to Saturday May 16, children can see Horseplay, where small groups of children will go inside a specially created stable set. Creator Niki McCretton said: “Going to the theatre is a huge step for pre-school children. “It can be frightening, intimidating or downright boring. “I wanted to create an experience that would entertain and stimulate three to five-year-olds as well as older children. “If they enjoy taking part in Horseplay they should feel more comfortable sitting in a theatre seat watching Hoof!. “I am excited that the Civic is promoting both shows. “It is an ideal introduction to the thrills of live theatre.” Horseplay will be staged from tomorrow to Saturday at 11am, 12.30pm, 2pm and 2.30pm, with final performances on Sunday before the one-off performance of Hoof! Details: 0845 1800 363.
Kiwi fruit?: Sandra Claydon’s ‘parrot’ Bo.
Picture: Scott Bairstow
Who’s a pretty odd boy, then? SANDRA and Terry Claydon were sick as parrots when they realised they had paid £165 for a bird that wasn’t a parrot. The couple, of Colley Street, Kendray, were told it was a New Zealand parrot when they bought it from a man in Barnsley. It was only when they went to feed their new pet and checked in a pet book they realised there was a mistake. “We were told it was a New Zealand parrot and that it whistled and danced and that it could talk,” said Sandra, 66. “We didn’t know what to feed it so we called the man and he said he would drop some feed round but he never did.
“So my husband went to look for information in some books – it was then he realised.” The pair took the bird to a pet shop but even staff were unsure what it was. They asked the seller for a refund but said he just laughed. The number supplied has since been discontinued. “I feel I’ve been conned, it makes me feel mad that someone can trick someone out of money like this. I’m hoping someone out there knows what kind of bird Bo is. “We want to know how we can look after him properly.”
NORMAN Bailey thought his luck had changed when a cheque arrived in the post. But the out-of-work HGV driver’s smile soon turned to laughter when he saw it was for the sum of 1p. Norman, 60, informed the Child Support Agency he had been made redundant so they would no longer be able to stop the £64 a week child support out of his wage. Norman, of Cypress Road, Kendray, said: “Four weeks later, they sent me this cheque, saying I’d been overpaid. “I just couldn’t believe it. “It’s cost them more to send it. “It would cost me £2.30 on the bus to go and put it in the bank, so I’m going to frame it and Don’t spend it all: Norman Bailey with his cheque for one penny. (S) keep it.”

FISHING CLUB REVIVE CANAL BY MIKE COTTON A NEGLECTED stretch of canal at Stairfoot has been given a new lease of life by a youth fishing club. Several bikes and scooters, skateboards, shopping trolleys and dozens of beer bottles were among the junk youth worker Walt Boydell and his team pulled out of
the stretch of canal near the Trans -Pennine Trail. Walt wants to clean up and restock the canal for his fishing club and the rest of the community. He and his team including councillors, kids and the Safer Neighbourhood Team, made a good start. Walt said: “If we empower kids to take a bit of pride in their environ-
ment and their own community they’ll be encouraged to look after it. If they hear that people are going down there and starting fires and causing trouble, I’d hope they’d be likely to look after it and report it if things are happening.” Coun Jim Smith said: “All three Stairfoot councillors are pleased that Walt is going for this environmental work around the canal.” Contact Walt on 07802 854003.

Students over the moon SAMPLES of moon rock and lunar dust have landed at a school as part of a special display. Students at the Academy were able to handle and compare them to rock samples from Earth. They were brought to the school by the UK’s Science and Technology Facilities Council. The academy has recently taken delivery of a 70mm refracting telescope from the Society for Popular Astronomy, which will enable students to study the face of the moon in more detail and trace the stars. Simon Bateman studies on the BSc(Hons) Construction and Project Management Course at the University Campus, Barnsley. Simon works for Bramall Construction and shares his experience of being a student with us. “My studies have involved a variety of practical and theory-based work that makes the course much more interesting. We have had a case study of a building to use within the building surveying module and have also done research into the current construction markets for modules like environmental management, which is a very current topic. By studying parttime you can draw on your experience and use workplace situations to help complete the assignments. This not only shows that you know the subject but also that you know your work. “The best thing about being a student at the Barnsley Campus is the friendly atmosphere within the lectures and the help and guidance that’s on offer from the tutors; if you’re stuck there is also help on hand to point you in the right direction which saves time to concentrate on your work.”

WHEELERS HAVE MIXED FORTUNES ON THE TRACKS MEMBERS of Birdwell Wheelers have been putting in the mileage in recent weeks. Trevor Mayne rode what is likely to be the only stage race this year by a Birdwell Wheeler in the veterans’ three-day tour of the Abberleys in Worcestershire over the Bank Holiday weekend. Despite riding strongly, he came away empty-handed due in part to bad luck. The opening stage was a hilly time trial over four miles in which he managed to stay in touch with the leading riders’ times. Stage two was a road race over 45 miles in which Mayne was one of two riders who worked together to forge the biggest break of the day. But they were reeled in and the stage finished in a bunch sprint which did little to effect the leaderboard. Stage Three, also a road race, proved to be the defining stage. Four riders got away early on and when two more riders attacked, Mayne tried to join them but had to stop when two horses on the road were
spooked, bringing all but the leaders to a stop! The deciding stage was a hilly, hard-fought road race, and many of the main contenders were dropped but any time Mayne gained was not enough to lift him above eighth place overall. Despite coming second in his age category, Mayne finished the competition frustrated. In the A1 classic at Boroughbridge on a rolling 53-mile circuit, Dave Scargill and Rodger Holmes had mixed fortunes. Scargill attacked from the gun into a headwind and forged a 20 second lead. He was joined a short time later by two other riders and they worked together for 50 miles to finish two minutes ahead of the bunch, Scargill managing third place in a close fought sprint and losing first place by inches. Rodger Holmes in his first road race since being injured in a road crash was going strongly in the bunch until a pile up of riders forced the race to be cancelled. In the NMCF Pooled Clubs’ 25-mile
time trial event at Hatfield Woodhouse, Mayne, with 58.28, led the way followed by Paul Bennington 1-03.14 and John Woodhouse 1-08.42. Mayne was second fastest of 52 riders in the event beaten to first place by less than a minute. Jan Wilson was one of the timekeepers with Malcolm Wilson pushing the riders off. Meanwhile, veteran riders Vic Fielding, Peter Knowles, Derry Dixon, Christine Minto, Dave Cutts and his 15-year-old son Andy had an enjoyable day’s ride cycling mostly on quiet roads and lanes to Sherburn before returning home via Askern. In the Wheelers second club event, 16 riders braved the elements and some were rewarded well for their efforts. First handicap ten points went to Rodger Holmes who wheeled out his good bike for the evening and was rewarded with a time of 14-55 knocking 1-16 off the previous week’s time.

Whopper: Ashley Scully with one of the prime Ling weighing over 20 pounds.
Plymouth double for Reds fans SEVEN members of the BFC Sea Angling Club decided to combine a deep sea angling trip from the port of Plymouth with Barnsley’s survival battle at Home Park. And the lads struck gold on both counts. Fishing aboard their regular charter boat Size Matters, they anchored over a 280ft deep wreck 50 miles out in the English Channel. The seven club members hooked into top quality Ling, Pollack and Conger Eels giving them a total weight for the trip of over 1,000 pounds. Top weight Ling was a superb 30 pound plus caught by Kev Crossley, following up were excellent 20lb plus fish by Martyn Scully, Stuart Parkin, Frank Outwin, Malc Yates and Brian Hayward. All the team landed Conger Eels in double figures, the best weight of the day being a personal best 50 pound
eel caught by Ashley Scully. Rounding off a hugely successful weekend, the lads then went to the football match to cheer on the Super Reds to victory. The silverfish only match at Fleets Dam saw most of the participants returning double figures nets of fish. The winner was Wombwell angler Jess King with 26lb 15oz of skimmers and roach caught on the long pole, alternating between pellet and maggot. Second was Stuart Merrills with a similar catch weighing 20lb 60z. In third place with a very respectable 18lb 10oz of roach was Dave Smallman. Fleets Dam matches are being held every Saturday, Sunday and Wednesday. For details contact Alan Hanson on Barnsley 292579.
