Stagecoach admits bunching BY MIKE COTTON STAGECOACH has admitted there’s some truth in that old saying about waiting for a bus then two come at once. But it has made timetable changes which it says will help stamp-out the problem on the number 66 bus through Elsecar, Birdwell, Worsbrough Bridge to Barnsley. It’s supposed to run every ten minutes and every eight at peak times. Stagecoach commercial director Rupert Cox said: “We are aware of occasional bunching on the 66 route where more

than one bus arrives at the same time. Hopefully, our changes will go some way towards preventing that happening.” Other changes include the 222 Doncaster-Mexborough-Barnsley service. All journeys now use Pontefract Road, Barnsley Road, Grove Road, Masefield Road, Christchurch Road, Brampton Road and Melton High Street (the former 226 route), with resulting timetable alterations between Wombwell and Mexborough. On service 226 (Barnsley-WathThurnscoe) buses now run via Pontefract Road and Barnsley Road to West Street in Brampton, which was the 222 route.

MEGAN GROWS MEGA FLOWERS A CARLTON girl was runner-up in what is dubbed ‘the Chelsea Flower Show of the north’. Megan Nugent, eight, of Royston Lane, came second in the ‘Just for Fun’ category for under-12s at Harrogate Flower Show. She filled a big cup and saucer

owned by her mum Julie, 39, with white, purple, green and yellow flowers including gerberas, freesia, stocks and foliage. It was the third year that Megan, a pupil of St Dominic’s School, has taken part in the show. Julie, who runs Flower Corner on

Summer Lane, Barnsley, said: “Entrants in Megan’s category had to arrange flowers in an unusual container. She saw my cup and saucer and gave it a go.” Megan often helps at her mum’s shop during the holidays.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR SCHEME BY MIKE COTTON YOU may have heard of Dial-aRide, but how about ‘Dial-aCar’? Dial-a-Ride is setting up a new scheme, called Barnsley Community Car Scheme. Where the established Dial-a-Ride The trio: Prospective parliamentary candidates from left Eric Illsley, Ian Cuthberts scheme involves regular minibuses and Spencer Pitfield. Business leaders quiz candidates BUSINESS leaders gathered to quiz three parliamentary candidates in a ‘Question Time’-style briefing last Tuesday. Eric Illsley (Labour, Barnsley Central), Spencer Pitfield (Conservative, Penistone and Stocksbridge) and Ian Cuthbertson (Liberal Democrat, Penistone and Stocksbridge) were on the panel. Each outlined their party’s policy on the economy before facing questions on: ● The reinvigoration of the local economy; ● The level of support provided to small businesses by banks; ● Barnsley College’s provision of apprenticeships and vocational qualifications, and the education agenda; ● The state of the NHS; ● The potential effects of a hung parliament. Barnsley and Rotherham Chamber of Commerce

organised the event which was chaired by Daphne Ellis, of the Barnsley Chronicle. The Chambers communications manager Andrew Denniff said: “Even at this stage, it is important that Chamber members hear what each party has to offer and, in

turn, that the candidates are aware of the many issues that are of concern to local businesses. “Whether today’s session will alter opinions remains to be seen and, in truth, the real work for all our new MPs will begin after tomorrow.”

teers running a ‘taxi’ service in their own cars. They will take people where they need to go, when they need to go. Ian Jenkinson is one of the organisers of the same scheme in Sheffield, and he is helping set up the Barnsley scheme. He said: “There’s a lot of elderly and disabled people who struggle to use buses.” Mileage expenses will be covered

and the organisers will write to drivers’ insurers on their behalf to make sure they are covered. Ian said they are looking to recruit as many drivers as possible: “It’s as little or as much as people are willing to do. “We’d like people to commit on a regular basis, even if its just an hour or two.” Volunteers should contact Barnsley Dial-a-Ride on 298675. What’s up pussy cat?: Rory is recovering from medical problems.

Can you give Rory a home? A CAT with a case of worms so bad they were ‘literally hanging off him’ is on the road to recovery and looking for a new home. Rory, a five-year-old ginger tom, was also riddled with fleas and had an abscess on his head. He has been looked after by the Cats’ Protection League over the last few months after his owners said they didn’t want him. The charity paid for treatment and neutering and Rory is now looking to be adopted into a home where he would be the only pet.

Anne Warriner, of the CPL, says his new owner would have to be patient with Rory because of his medical problems. Anne added: “The worms were so bad it damaged his bowels but we are hoping that is only temporary. “He will use a litter tray six out of ten times. “But he is adorable, loving and will make someone a wonderful pet if they can cope with this problem for the first few weeks before he is allowed outside.” The CPL will help with vet’s fees. To offer Rory a home give Ann a call on 712157.

Tot alerts family to blaze A TWO-YEAR-OLD girl alerted her parents to a house fire when she woke up coughing. Fire-fighters were called to the house on Thornton Road, Kendray, at 1am last Thursday. They found the family-of-six, including three boys aged two, four and seven, waiting outside. They were treated by paramedics at the scene but did not need to go to hospital. It is thought the fire started when a lamp overheated and set fire to the curtains in the living room. Fire-fighters wearing breathing apparatus put out the blaze and left the scene just after 2am. Watch manager Paul Thomas of Barnsley fire station said the family was fortunate the toddler woke up as the smoke alarms were not working.

DUG COMPLAINS OVER GRIT BY KATE PICKLES LEFTOVER sand and gravel from the winter gritting should be swept up before it causes an accident, according to a resident. Dug Wydell, of Chapel Street, said he had com-

plained to the council on several occasions but nothing had been done. The bricklayer, aged 59, said he had seen road sweepers on main roads but that smaller roads were being ignored. He said the build up of grit could cause cars to skid when it collected in dips in

the road. “I’m just frustrated because I have rung the highways department several times and it’s taking too long for anything to be done,” he said. “All the winter grit put down is still there and it’s a right mess. I’ve seen the road sweeper out on

Last chance to enter Dandy Dogs 2010… So there's still time to enter your pampered pooch

Sheffield Road three times but it never comes down here. It can cause a problem for cars braking on the road. “As you come down Chapel Street towards The Walk there is a large deposit which cars could skid on if they’re not careful.”

He said other residents were fed up with the grit getting on their paths and gardens. “The residue that has been swept out of the gutter gets swept up onto the path. “It annoys me because no sooner do you sweep up your path and garden then it gets covered again. “I know it doesn’t come high on the council’s priorities but they’re not giving me any date to stop me phoning up. “I just want them to tell me when it will get done.” The council thanked Mr Wydell for bringing it to its attention and said it would be swept by the end of the week.

Nitty gritty: Dug Wydell of Birdwell, who is unhappy the council still haven’t cleaned up the grit from the winter freeze.

ASH CASTS CLOUD OVER COUPLE’S SILVER WEDDING CELEBRATIONS BY MIKE COTTON THE volcanic ash crisis and violent clashes in Bangkok combined to give a Barnsley couple a silver wedding anniversary to remember.

Back home: David and Jocelyn Egan who are back in Staincross after being trapped in Thailand by the ash cloud.

David and Jocelyn Egan, both 46, of Burnham Avene, Staincross, travelled to Vietnam and Cambodia to celebrate their anniversary. They drove back to Bangkok to fly home at the height of the volcanic ash air crisis. There have also been violent clashes in Bangkok following anti-government protests and the British government is now advising tourists not to travel there. David said: “The airport looked after us. The authorities laid on food, and drink, and we had internet access, phones and television. They brought some mattresses for us. I couldn’t fault them. Virgin (their airline) said they’d put us up in a hotel, so we went for a couple of nights respite, but we felt a bit more secure in the airport. “There was a big security presence outside, and it was getting quite difficult to get in and out, so once we got back in we basically wanted to stay.” David said the ‘Dunkirk spirit’ kicked in among the stranded travellers. “We didn’t really see any of the trouble, although I talked to people who did. But obviously we were quite concerned about it, checking the news all the time.

December 1959. George contacted Julian after a story appeared in the paper. Julian said: “I was delighted to hear from him. He said he picked up the paper and saw the photo but he couldn’t remember it being taken. “It’s 50 years since I last saw him and I’ve been looking for him for 30 years.” The pair are now planning to meet up.

Seaman reunited with ex-colleague AN ex-Navy seaman has been reunited with a former colleague who lives in Barnsley. Julian Alcock, of Stafford, contacted the Chronicle for help tracing his pal George Ryan, who joined the Royal Navy in 1959 and was a mechanical engineer. Julian, who joined up at the same time, went on to become an able seaman weapons armourer and lost touch with George when he went to Portsmouth to do a course on his chosen job in

“It did in a way take some of the shine off the holiday, but we did meet some great people in the airport. There was a lot of that ‘Dunkirk spirit’ and you just sort of got on with it.” They managed to get one of the second ‘relief flights’ to leave Bangkok a week after they should have arrived home. They had expected to be stuck for longer. “Before they put the relief flights on, everyone was on standby for the scheduled flights, and only two or three were getting on each one. There were thousands of us, so I was thinking ‘we could be here for months’.” David is a member of the International Rescue Corps and has volunteered in rescues including the 2005 Pakistan earthquake, floods in Mozam-bique and a plastics factory explosion in Scotland. He said: “I think my rescue work did prepare me in a way. I didn’t panic. I’ve learnt that flights are not the easiest of things to organise.”

Tall order: New player for Barnsley RUFC Ed Norris with coaches Paul Matthews, right, and Mark Smith, left.

BIG SIGNING AT SHAW LANE BARNSLEY RUFC First XV have secured the signature of a former England under 21 international. They hope he will be a big signing – and not just because of his 6ft 6in frame. Local boy Ed Norris has joined the club after spending the majority of his career playing five divisions higher than the Shaw Laners. The giant second row will take his place in the Barnsley scrum next season and also use his vast experience in his role of forwards coach. The 30-year-old spent nine seasons in the second and third tiers of English rugby with the likes of Doncaster Knights, Sedgley Park and Manchester. Norris, originally from Dinnington, has lived in Lundwood for seven years and has just bought a house in Penistone. But he is keen to stress that his local connections are not the only reason he has joined the Shaw Laners. “Barnsley is my local club but I have come here because I am impressed by their ambition. I am not here for a holiday I want to be successful. I have had a good career but I still want more. I am 30 years old which many people say is your peak as a rugby player so I still have a lot to give. “Off the pitch everything is in place here. The facilities are as good as most clubs in the Championship (English second tier) and that goes a long way.

‘I am not here for a holiday, I want to be successful’ “I just want to get as many people down here training as possible with smiles on their faces so we have the right attitude going into games.” Head coach Mark Smith is hoping that Norris’s presence will inspire the rest of the squad who have avoided relegation comfortably in their first season in the Yorkshire League. “We are extremely

excited to have Ed here. It is probably one of the biggest signings this league has ever seen. He will bring a lot of experience and ability to our team. “Hopefully he will be a role model for the other players and someone who they will want to impress whilst playing alongside. We have had a good season but have made the wrong choices at times and hopefully Ed’s experience can help with that.” Since being promoted last year, the Shaw Laners have won seven, drawn two and lost 17 of their Yorkshire League Two games. After a good start which saw them near the top of the table in November they fell away and won just four of their last 19 matches.
