PARENTS FEAR FOR KIDS’ EDUCATION BY JOANNE WRIGHT PARENTS of pupils at a school are worried about their children’s education after discovering a teacher will lose their job at the end of the school year due to fall in numbers. Hoyland Springwood Primary school has been forced to reduce its staff because it has ‘fallen victim to the local lowering of the birth rate’. In July, 28 pupils will leave to go to secondary school but in September the number taken in at reception is substantially lower, meaning a reduction in the number of students. The school has 125 pupils split between five classes, including two mixed-age classes.

From September the five teachers will be reduced to four. In a letter to parents, headteacher Julian Wroe said: “I must assure you that no changes to our staffing levels are about to take place, i.e. the number of staff in proportion to the number of pupils. “However, 28 Year Six pupils will be leaving us in July and our usual number of reception intake, which will be in the low teens, means that the total number of pupils in school will be reduced. “We have therefore, been forced to reduce the number of staff working here from August 31 2009. “It is most unfortunate that we have fallen victim to the local lowering of the birth rate but this is a situation beyond our control.”

One woman whose daughter is a pupil said a number of parents are considering removing their children. The parent, who did not want to be named, said: “We are concerned about the quality of education our children will receive, other schools in the area with a similar number of pupils have six teachers. “We don’t want to remove our children because they enjoy going there but we have to think of their future.” In a recent Ofsted inspection the school was rated good and described by inspectors as a ‘small, happy school where pupils are nurtured and cared for’. No-one at the school or council was available to comment.

BOSSES LEARN HOW TO ESCAPE POVERTY Clogged up: A pair of clogs owned by Jane Galvin’s mother, an example of the town’s history.

(S)

Historic items bring past alive PEOPLE turned up to a heritage celebration at the University Centre, Barnsley, with items from their own past. The event, organised by the Heritage Lottery Fund, was aimed at getting people interested at finding out more about Barnsley’s past. Jane Galvin brought along a pair of clogs which belonged to her mother at the age of two. Another brought playing cards, which recaptured memories of summer holidays with the family, while others brought Blackpool rock and jewellery and one showed off their tattoos as memories. Fiona Spiers, head of The Heritage Lottery Fund for Yorkshire and the Humber, said: “Barnsley has a wealth of heritage to celebrate. “Despite this, the town has made fewer applications for Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) grants than

Staff reunited for tea FORMER Butterfield’s staff were reunited for afternoon tea with the Mayor and Mayoress. Employees of the town centre department store responded to an appeal by Mayoress Beryl Sanderson who worked there as a trainee hairdresser. The former store workers all worked with Mrs Sanderson at Butterfields and Massey’s in Church Street between 1960 and 1964. All still live in the Barnsley area. “It was lovely to see so many old friends once again and such a pleasure to be able to host afternoon tea for them at the town hall,” she said. “Everyone said they really enjoyed catching up with former colleagues’ news and we all enjoyed looking at photographs of Butterfield’s and its window displays from more than 40 years ago.”

Advertiser’s Announcement

Think you can’t quit smoking? That’s what Jonathan thought... With National No Smoking Day (March 11th) almost upon us, many smokers are wondering if they really can do it. Jonathan Rollinson, a 21year-old hairdresser, had doubts too. This is how he began the last 10 smokefree months – one day at a time… I first started smoking in the first teenage years at school. I started smoking because all my friends were smoking. I smoked more from leaving school, as I think being able to smoke made me smoke more. My family didn’t know that I smoked until I was 16, my mum could smell it on me I think from the start. But when I was 16 I told them that I smoked – nothing was said to me as they are smokers themselves. They weren’t

impressed or happy that I smoked, but at 16 I could buy my own cigs so there was nothing they could really say. “I found lots of health problems from smoking even at the start, I noticed my breathing wasn’t as good, I felt it definitely held me back, I could tell that I smoked because if I walked a long distance, jogged or ran I could feel that my chest was really tight and it was difficult to breathe.

Whenever I got a cold it went straight to my chest and it was worse than it would have been normally.” I quit smoking when I was 20, it will be a year in April. I quit smoking for health reasons, I joined the gym, stopped smoking and noticed a huge difference. It was also for money reasons that I quit smoking, as I used to smoke over 20 a day so I had to buy 40 a day which was something like over £11.00 a day. I was sick of it! “I’ve been twice to the service for help. The first time I came I just used patches and inhalers it was really good and really helpful, but I didn’t feel it did enough for me and I felt in a bad mood and cranky all the time. The second time I came back another medication was recommended to me and within a few weeks, after the week with smoking I had a couple of draws and then I just stopped, as the smoking made me feel sick.” Since I stopped smoking my fitness has improved, I feel healthier, I feel more awake and I’m a lot better off financially, I bought a new car and that encouraged me to stop smoking as I knew I couldn’t keep up with both. I’ve got a daughter, who is 5 years old and I think from me stopping smoking she has benefited from it as well. When she was born I was still smoking and even if I didn’t smoke near her, she would go into the room I had been smoking in and she could smell it on my clothes. So stopping smoking for her is one of the main reasons I quit. She says all the time “my daddy doesn’t smoke anymore” and to hear her say that is definitely an achievement and I know she is proud of me, that is worth it. I think if a child sees their parents smoke, I think it is a big influence on them, they will see it as ok for them to smoke and I definitely think it is a bad influence. I don’t miss smoking at all. I think for your family and for your health it would be best to stop smoking, because it just affects everybody not just yourself. Like Jonathan, many local people have found that ‘it’s all right to ask for help’. The Barnsley NHS Stop Smoking Service currently helps an average of 40 people to quit each week. For more information, drop into the Quitshop at 12-14 Eldon Street or call the Service on (01226) 737077.

FEARS THAT PLANS FOR OUTLET COULD CAUSE ACCIDENTS Undercover assignment: Jonathan Hick featured on Secret Millionaire.

(S)

Self-made millionaire has secret experience AN ENTREPRENEUR whose businesses include a gastro pub in Barnsley has appeared on the hit show Secret Millionaire. Jonathan Hick, a partner at The Spencer Arms in Cawthorne, spent nine days undercover in Hendon, Sunderland, for the Channel Four show. He saw the impact of the recession at street level, including issues involving mental health, alcoholism and drugs. Mr Hick, who originates from Hull, spoke about his own mental breakdown six years ago. “One in four of us will be touched by mental health problems in our lifetime, yet there is still a stigma to it,” he said.

“I was incredibly lucky in having supportive family, colleagues and friends so I made a full recovery and moved on. “There remains a big part of me wanting to help those who hit problems each year and those who are long-term sufferers.” The self-made millionaire founded the Directorbank Group — a provider of senior directors to private equity and venture capital backed companies, making millions a year. On the show he gave away £20,000 to the mental health charity Headlight, £15,000 to a wheelchairbased exercise class for the elderly and £5,000 to Sunderland Maritime Heritage.

A TOWN centre retail outlet could increase traffic problems and cause accidents if an alternative access point is granted, councillors have warned. Plans to build the shops and eateries at the former Yorkshire Electricity depot on Harborough Hill Road were given the go-ahead last month, with access off Schwabisch Gmund Way. But Npower Yorkshire Ltd, which owns the disused site, wants to make an additional entrance off the dual carriageway. Coun Mike Stokes said people were worried about the speed and volume of traffic on Harborough Hill Road. “It is not the safest of roads,” said Coun Stokes. “It is a very busy road, particularly

at peak times, so it can lead to complications. “The speed limit is 40mph and we know that people tend to do that as a minimum and not a maximum. “But it is the engineers who will make the final decision on whether it would be safe or not so we will see what they decide.” Statistics provided with the application showed there had been 52 accidents on Harborough Hill Road since 2002, including several involving pedestrians, though none were fatal. The resubmitted proposal, which has been refused twice previously, would put a customer entrance on an access road which is currently only open to emergency vehicles. Drivers would use a three-laned slip road off Harborough Hill Road

including one solely for turning left onto the retail outlet, in addition to the agreed access from Schwabish Gmund Way. There would also be a pedestrian crossing near the slip road. The original planning application was granted in October 2005 but development never started and an updated application was resubmitted at the end of 2008. Coun Stokes said he believed the amended version would address some of the worries of residents on Mottram Street, including moving the site ten metres further back from houses. “The improvements we were looking for were to the rear of Mottram Street and for the people living there, the refreshed application is a very significant improvement.”

CAMPAIGNERS CONTINUE FIGHT TO SAVE SCHOOL BY EMMA SPENCER EX-PUPILS and campaigners are stepping up their fight to save Holgate School. They are in the process of setting up a ‘Save Holgate’ group on the social networking site Facebook and will be going en masse to the next area forum for the Central and Kingstone wards. Councillors and officers will be asked to stop the plans to knock down the former grammar school. A planning application submitted by the council shows Holgate will be cleared to accommodate the proposed advanced learning centre’s playing fields. The ALC will replace Holgate and Kingstone and is expected to be built on the former S R Gent’s site, accessed via Dodworth Road, with grounds stretching back to Shaw Lane where Holgate now stands.

When pupils return after the Easter break petitions objecting to the proposed demolition will be distributed around the school. Old pupil Rob Warburton, who started the campaign, said: “It isn’t going to be a shouting match but there is a hell of a lot of people who are absolutely outraged.” He is also going to argue that given the economic climate the council should be more prudent. Figures submitted with the planning application show it would cost almost £2m to bring the Holgate building up to scratch and a similar figure for Kingstone, but each of the nine new schools planned for across the borough will cost around £25m. The council says it isn’t possible to retain Holgate and also meet the area requirements for the new school as set out by the Department for Children, Schools and Families.

TIME TO ENJOY THE BENEFITS OF YOUR EARLY PLANTING

Colourful: The results of a head-start. (S)

HOLDING on to the thought of the spring miracle, seeing a plant grow from a tiny seed, is what keeps gardeners sane in the winter. Browsing through gardening catalogues helps but the truly committed gardener will prepare a method for planting out seeds. It’s not just that they can’t wait for spring, they also want to get a head-start on everybody else. A little cash spent on seeds and started off in trays on a window sill or conservatory can be very rewarding. It means there will be small plants ready to transplant to the garden early in the growing season, about now.

Planting seeds indoors at intervals ensures that if the worst happens and an unexpected frost descends, you will have some plants to fall back on. If all goes well you can also get a head start on the season before the plagues of disease, bugs and vermin become active. Juicy tomatoes will be ready to harvest weeks before anyone else’s. In order to germinate, seeds need moisture and warmth in addition to the planting medium. The optimum conditions for achieving this delicate balance are determined mostly by planting depth. Follow the instructions on the seed packet for best results, but if seeds you’ve collected have no instructions available, try planting the depth of the diame-

ter of the seed. If they’re so tiny that they can’t be handled well, scatter them over the top of the seedbed and dust them lightly with your planting medium. Sowing seeds too deeply is the most common reason for poor germination. Individual seeds, such as marigold and sweet peas, can easily be planted one at a time using a dibber. Be careful when you are watering them so that they don’t get washed away. Sometimes a clump of small seeds germinate with their tiny roots inter-

twined – and although frugal gardeners often attempt to separate and replant the seedlings, this is often unsuccessful since it disturbs the delicate root systems. It is best to use a small pair of scissors to snip the extra seedlings away from the chosen one. When the seedlings are removed for transplanting to the garden, do not lift them by the stem, lift them by one leaf. If the leaf is damaged, more leaves will come. If the stem is broken, you’ve lost the seedling.

BARNSLEY’S ANGELS ARE EXTRA EASY!

You may have heard of the TV show Charlie’s Angels; Slimming World has gone one better, it has the Barnsley Angels! After losing weight themselves local girls Debbie Firth, Mandy Rea and Louise Turner are now ready to help the people of Barnsley, not by fighting crime but by beating the obesity epidemic! There is no need to starve yourself slim at Slimming World, our NEW Extra Easy eating plan makes losing weight easier than ever before. You’re able to eat unlimited amounts of rice, pasta, potatoes, pulses, grains, meat, fish, yoghurt, fruit and vegetables to satisfy your hunger while still being able to enjoy your favourite treat every day! Sounds too good to be true? We’ll give you your money back if you don’t lose weight!! Louise Turner, who is opening two new groups at the Metrodome on Tuesday 21st April at 7pm and on Friday 24th April at 10am, says, “Losing weight with Slimming World was easier than I ever imagined. I could still enjoy ‘normal’ foods such as Spaghetti Bolognese, which meant that the family could eat exactly the same as me. I can’t believe how much difference losing 21lb has made to my confidence and the health of my family – I can’t wait to help other people feel like I do!” Latest government studies have shown that 24 million people are overweight or obese in the UK and Barnsley was found to be the ‘fattest town in England’. Being overweight is a risky business and can decrease your life expectancy by up to nine years. Losing 10 per cent of your body weight will help reduce blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease and stroke. Before joining Slimming World Mandy Rea would stay indoors because she was so embarrassed about her size. “I was miserable and hated my body, people would talk to me like I was stupid. I felt like screaming I’m not stupid, this is not the real me; I’m in the wrong body.” The crunch came when her dad announced that he was taking the whole family on a cruise. “I couldn’t bear the thought of being the fattest there so I joined my local group. I was amazed at how friendly it was, I was never embarrassed, humiliated or made to feel stupid. The consultant and group were so supportive; for the first time in years I felt valued! After losing just 10 per cent of my starting weight I felt so much healthier and my confidence was at an all time high. I’ve finally found my real body! I felt fantastic wearing my bikini on holiday!” If you want to discover yours come along to Mandy’s group on Mondays at 7pm at Birdwell Primary School. Debbie Firth is feeling the impact of the credit crunch and is taking a jump, not just out of a plane for charity but is making a leap into a brand new career with Slimming World. Debbie starts her Worsbrough group at the Sports Development Association on Tuesdays at 7pm. “For me losing weight has given me a brand new life.” Before losing her excess weight Debbie would hide under baggy clothes and avoid activity at all costs. “Attending the group didn’t just give me the support to change my eating habits for life it also helped me incorporate activity into my daily routine.”

“THE SUPERB HEROES”

Debbie added: “I used to think that exercise meant wearing a leotard and joining the gym. For me the key to becoming active was making it fun, I love riding my bike and can’t wait to do the charity sky dive. I’d have never done it before losing weight.”

“DEE DOWLING BAND”

If you are interested in discovering the amazing you, go along to a local Slimming World group where a warm welcome awaits you!

WALE’S TITLE FIGHT ON HOLD JOSH Wale was due to fight for the English title live on Sky TV on Friday but he has been forced to wait a few more months. The super bantamweight had been lined up to box Mark Moran for the national crown but the fight was cancelled due to the surprise retirement of British champion Matthew Marsh. The Boxing Board of Control decided Moran should now fight Jason Booth for British title vacated by Marsh, leaving Wale without an opponent. However, all is not lost. He was given assurances that an English title shot will come his way in June. It left him extremely disappointed but he says he is remaining positive. “I could have cried when it got called off,” said Wale. “I was so ready for this fight, I couldn’t wait to get into the ring against Moran so to hear it had been called off was really hard to take. “There is some consolation though. I have been told I will definitely get an English title shot in June so that gives me a bit more time to prepare. “I am currently sixth in the British rankings. “The five above me are all champions so I am the next in line.”
