It means Henry needs daily physiotherapy to loosen mucus in his lungs and must take medication with food so his body can absorb fat. “You wouldn’t know anything was wrong looking at him,” said mum Sarah. “But it’s a chronic lung disease that he’s got. He will have two to three weeks without and then when he starts coughing he’ll be put on them again to fight infections in his lungs.” About 75 per cent of affected children survive to young adulthood and the average life expectancy is between 30 and 40. hope of replacing the faulty gene with a healthy one rather than treating the symptoms. Now parents Sarah and John, of Holly Moor View, Thurgoland, want to raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. In September the pair will climb Ben Nevis and take part in the Twilight walk, ten miles around Barnsley. “At the moment Henry’s really well. He’s so energetic it’s non-stop from when he gets up to when he goes to bed. “But it’s a degenerative disease and when he gets older it will get worse. If trials are successful then we’re hopeful about gene therapy. It won’t make him better but it would stop him getting worse.”

PATIENTS in Barnsley are being encouraged to find the most appropriate NHS service by using their mobile phones. A new iPhone application has been designed to enable people to find out where their closest GPs, dentists, sexual health service and pharmacies are located. It also gives first aid and emergency advice and reminders about health appointments and medication. Medical director for NHS Barnsley, Dr Ken McDonald, said it was part of the NHS Choose Well campaign, designed to relieve pressure on A&E and GP services by reducing unnecessary attendances. “For people new to the Barnsley area or those who love technology, the phone app is a great tool to have to hand for when you find yourself needing to use the NHS.”

Hospital appointment system puts mums on same page
JAMES INVESTS IN ALE AN ALE fan who was one of the first to lose his job because of government cuts has turned to drink – he’s set up a brewery. James Taylor has invested his redundancy money to set up Two Roses brewery at the Darton business park. He was formerly employed by the Audit Commission, which has had its budget cut and was made redundant at the end of last year. But he has invested about £80,000 in his new brewery business, buying tanks, tuns and coppers – and fulfilled an ambition. James, 54, of Staincross Common, said: “I have always had an interest in beer and have been brewing at home on an amateur basis for a number of years and have always had an inkling at the back of my mind that I’d start brewing. “For the first time in my
NEW mums will be able to walk around Barnsley Hospital while waiting for appointments thanks to a new paging system. The antenatal clinic will give parents the devices so they do not have to stay in the waiting rooms when there are delays in appointments. Mums can go to the hospital restaurant or cafe or take a stroll around hospital grounds without worrying about missing their appointment. The pager is set to alert them when their appointment is next in line, giving them plenty of time to return to the antenatal

unit. Antenatal clinic manager Sharon Hardy said it gave women control over their time when they visited the hospital. “Sometimes our clinics run longer than scheduled because there are patients with complex needs or we need to run extra tests. “This means longer waits which we know can be frustrating or boring for the women. This system helps tackle this,” she said. The pagers, which have cost £850, were bought from the hospital’s charitable funds where money has been donate by the public.

barnsleyindependent Freedom trail: Milo Milinkovic will trek the Pyrenees to raise cash for the British Legion.
MILO TREKS TRAIL OF FREEDOM AN ex-serviceman and retired police officer is to walk the Freedom Trail across the French Pyrenees to raise money for the Royal British Legion. Milo Milinkovic, of Penistone, will take on the 50-mile walk along the Chemin de la Liberte in July and hopes to raise £1,000. He will be following in the footsteps of allied servicemen and civilians who tried to escape from German-occupied France into neutral Spain in the Second World War. It will take him five days
to complete the challenge which will see him climb 20,000 feet across the mountain passes of the Pyrenees. Milo, 56, said: “Being an ex-serviceman myself, the RBL is something close to my heart and they’ve helped me in the past.” The Freedom Trail was reopened and inaugurated in 1994 and is a memorial to the local guides who lost their lives helping the escapees, along with others who made the passage. Theatre group celebrates its 100th production KEXBOROUGH Youth Theatre will celebrate its 100th production this month. The group, founded in 1975 by a bunch of youngsters, is inviting former and present members and their families to share in the celebration show. It will take place between March
30 and April 2 and will be followed on April 3 by a special service to mark the success of the youth theatre. ‘Joseph and his Technicolor Dreamcoat’ has been chosen as the production to mark the milestone and will take place during the first half of the evening, followed by
songs from the shows which have been performed over the years. There are about 25 members in the theatre group who are taught singing, dancing and performing arts and who have the chance to learn about sound and lighting, together with making stage props and helping with costumes.
