LESSONS WILL BE THREE MILES APART BY EMMA SPENCER PUPILS at the proposed Shafton ALC will have to make their way from one lesson to another – between Lundwood and Grimethorpe. It is expected that for three months in September 2011 the
lessons will be split between Willowgarth and Priory, which are three-and-a-half miles apart, while the finishing touches are being made to the advanced learning centre. Priory headteacher Bernadette O’Br-ien, who has been appointed headteacher of Shafton ALC, says getting pupils from one site to another is one
of the biggest challenges she will face. She said: “The split site will be a big challenge. We have to look at how we operate on a split site and limit the disruption to children from both schools. “That is one of the things I have to work out with parents, students, governors and staff.”
Bernadette takes over as head of Shafton ALC in September this year even though Priory and Willowgarth don’t close until August 31, 2011 with Shafton ALC opening the day after. She will use that year to work out issues like the split site and staff structure and preparing the curriculum. The advert for the role was advertised
nationally and Bernadette and four other shortlisted candidates went through a three-day interview process. She added: “When you talk to pupils they are excited about the new building and the opportunities. “Obviously some have concerns and you expect that but I am looking forward to bringing
Shafton ALC to the community. “I have been in education for 24 years and the opportunity to create something special in terms of 21st century learning is exciting.” Bernadette has been headteacher at Priory for five years, was deputy head for five and also spent a short time as an Ofsted inspector.

Colette’s design was highlighted as a stand-out entry in the finals held in Bradford. Guest judge, interior designer Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, said he loved her design because it showed the mother and child relationship through the years. “I loved the fact it was about celebrating a relationship with our mothers that is a relationship for life.” “Any mother is a constant and this card focused on that which was important. It is just easy to focus Mother’s Day on children and their relationships. What Colette did having the different outfits representing the different years was so good.”

RETAIL PARK TO CREATE 60 JOBS A MINI retail park for Birdwell has been approved by the council’s planning board. Six shops, restaurants, cafes and takeaways may create up to 60 jobs on the former Hangmanstone depot, Sheffield Road. The proposal has created both strong support and strong opposition. More than 1,000 signed a petition saying Birdwell needed a retail development as there was a lack of shops. But 200 signed an opposing petition saying there would be more traffic and there was a fear of anti-social behaviour and litter around the takeaway. In a supporting letter Coun Steve

Sylvester (Independent) said the development would improve Birdwell’s ‘visual impact’, provide more choice to shoppers and create jobs. But Coun Jim Andrews (Labour) said it would lead to a loss of industrial land which would be needed when the economy improves, and that an increase in traffic would be inappropriate. Councillors on the planning board had struggled to make a decision last time in December and asked for it to be delayed until a later meeting. But last week they approved it. Coun Dick Wraith asked for an assurance the roads outside the site would be altered to provide good access into the site.

That’s me, I am a bit different.” The musical was staged at the Lamproom by Barnsley Amateurs Musical Theatre Group last week.

Sentenced: Barrie Barker, above and right, his neighbours Barry and Phyllis Roddis.
DISPUTE ENDS IN JAIL FOR GRANDAD BY MIKE COTTON A GRANDFATHER has been jailed for four months following a longrunning neighbour dispute. Barrie Barker, 55, was convicted of three breaches of an ASBO put in place to prevent him harassing his neighbour Barry Roddis 69, a former magistrate. The long-running row originally centred around cars on and around Mr Barker’s property on Lund Close, Lundwood. He breached the same ASBO three years ago by parking cars sporting number plates R 5OUL and GRA55 R in front of his neighbour’s house. He was given a suspended jail sentence then. He was convicted of the latest breach at Sheffield Magistrates’ Court last month but bailed between his trial and the sentencing last week.
He had claimed the bail conditions breached his human rights because he was banned from going to his own home. The empty house was burgled and he claims he has suffered £20,000 loss and damage. Defending, Andrew Swaby, said although the judge had previously said prison was likely, he urged her to consider a supervision order and a curfew, or a suspended prison sentence, because Mr Barker is 55, has no experience of prison and suffers anxiety and depression which would be made worse by a prison sentence. But district judge Sheila Driver said Mr Barker had been given ‘a chance’ with his suspended sentence, and said an immediate prison sentence was now the ‘only option’ for Mr Barker. Members of his family refused to stand after Mrs Driver passed her sentence, despite being asked twice to do so.

KATHERINE Brunt helped the England women’s team to their first ever series victory in India after they won two out of the three Twenty20 matches. The tourists triumphed by five wickets in a winnertakes-all final game on Monday to complete a tour in which Brunt has starred. The Dodworth girl took the most wickets of the English bowlers throughout the tour and recorded her best ever figures of five for 22 in the second match of the one-day series which the tourists lost. England took the lead in the Twenty20 series with a thrilling final ball win – but were then pegged back as India comfortably won the second match by 30 runs on Saturday. The tourists then clinched the third contest after Brunt gave them the perfect start by dismissing Indian opener Sulakshana Naik in the first over. The Barnsley CC star finished with tight figures of one wicket for 18 runs off her four overs as the hosts set England the target of 126. The tourists then secured victory with five wickets down in the last over. Two days earlier Brunt had recorded identical figures of one wicket for 18 runs off her four overs as India reached 126-7 off their 20 overs. But the tourists were then skittled out for 96. The England team will now look to defend their Twenty20 World Cup crown in the West Indies in May. ● Two young cricketers have been selected for the Gold Level of Yorkshire County Cricket Club’s ‘Pathways to Exellence’ scheme. Thomas Goldsby-West of Barnsley CC and Patrick Desborough of Wath-on-Dearne CC are now one stage away from being offered a professional contract. Nine other players have entered the scheme at the Bronze Level. They are Barnsley CC’s Tom Briggs, Drew Hawley, Jacob Hesletine, Callum Honeyman as well as Archie and Vinne Ogden, Tom Wade and Daniel Waldron of Wath CC and Darton CC player Luke Smith. ● Invitations for the Honda Barnsley Twenty20 knockout on May 21 have been sent out.
