SINGER ON TRACK FOR STARDOM

THE Prime Minister has backed a scheme whereby 100 Barnsley teenagers will spend part of their summer holiday working on a community project. Barnsley FC’s community project is working with the National Citizen Service. The 15 and 16-year-olds will take part in the eight-week programme after they have finished their exams in July. The details have yet to be decided but organiser Darren England said it could be something like refurbishing a local park. The first two weeks will be a residential course outside Barnsley during which they will do physical and team building activities. David Cameron has backed the scheme.

BY GAEL STIGANT KIRK Balk pupil Lauren Tate is hoping to follow in the footsteps of teen heartthrob Justin Bieber to global stardom. Like Justin, the 13-year-old singer has her own YouTube channel and hopes to be talentspotted by music industry bigwigs. Lauren has already recorded a nine-track album of covers which she has been selling to family and friends. She donated more than £200 of the proceeds to Cancer Research UK in memory of her gran and had enough left over to buy her first PA speakers so she can begin gigging as soon as she’s old enough. No matter what my mood it is a great escape and makes me feel great. “I keep going to concerts and wondering if one day that will be me on stage.” Lauren, who won the best solo performance category at last year’s Kirk Balk Inter-arts Competition, has regular singing lessons and has already started doing a few local performances. She has been having guitar lessons and is keen to start writing her own material. Fund-raising: Father Stephen Race at St John’s Church, Dodworth.

Church needs a real miracle WEAR and tear to a stained-glass window showing the sisters of Lazarus, who was raised from the dead, has led to hopes for another miracle. Parishioners at Dodworth St John’s Church need to raise £30,000 by September to repair the window fitted in 1872. So far, £3,300, including a donation of £1,000 from a council fund, has been raised. Lead in the window has become so heavy that it is bending the glass and some of the ties which hold the window to its frame need replac-

Parent Sarah Coles, 29, of Kendray, whose children attend Doncaster Road Primary said the council was ‘penny pinching.’ “They are putting our kids’ safety at risk to save a few quid,” she said. “Some of the older kids come to school on their own. Kids on a morning are a bit giddy and could easily run out into the road. It’s different when you have someone there to stop it.” The petition has been given to the council and it is understood it will be discussed at a meeting next week. The council refused to comment.

Parents believe there will be an accident if the council goes ahead with proposals to stop the crossing patrol at the school. Les Simpson, 43, who organised the petition to save Kate Deakin’s job, said the pelican crossing was not enough to protect the children’s safety. “Just because there’s a button it doesn’t mean that the kids are safe,

drivers don’t always stop,” he said. “There’s been a few times Kate has had to jump back off the road because cars go through the red lights. I think the kids are in danger without her. “The children are only little and the drivers can’t always see them so there’s a big safety issue here.” The crossing at Doncaster Road was one of three sites the council announced would be cut as part of plans to save £50,000. Hoyland Road and Sheffield Road in Hoyland Common, will also lose their lollipop ladies with redundancies expected in March.

NEARLY 500 people have signed a petition against plans to get rid of the lollipop lady at Doncaster Road Primary.

ing. The window, which is believed to have been put in to mark a marriage, is in two parts. The first shows Christ talking to Mary and Martha, the sisters of Lazarus. The other depicts Jesus speaking to a woman considered by others persona non grata. Vicar Father Stephen Race said: “We hope to start the repairs in September so we need to speed up fund-raising a bit.” Pupils of Dodworth St John’s Primary, who pay regular visits, have organised fund-raising quizzes.

Staff invited to St Mary’s WORKERS and shoppers are being invited into church during their lunch hour throughout Lent. St Mary’s Church, Barnsley, will be open today from 1.15pm to 1.45pm. There will be no preaching, although there will be background music and help for those who request it. Parish Deacon Barry Lowery said: “It is a gift from St Mary’s Church to those who work, study, shop or visit Barnsley. Many folk have stopped attending church other than for baptisms, weddings and funerals. Most claim a belief in God or ‘something’ and seek peace and meaning to life.”

The Gas Safe Register replaced Corgi as the gas registration body in Great Britain in 2009. It’s the only official list of gas engineers legally able to perform gas work on boilers, hobs, ovens, fires and all other gas appliances. The Gas Safe Charity, which aims to put an end to deaths, injuries and illnesses caused by dangerous gas work, always recommends you use a Gas Safe-registered engineer to carry out any gas work you need done. A Gas Safe-registered engineer has been checked to make sure they are competent and qualified to work safely and legally with gas. Every gas engineer carries a Gas Safe Register ID card with their unique licence number, showing the type of gas work they are qualified to do. Before any gas work is carried out you should always make sure you ask to see their Gas Safe Register ID card and check what work they are qualified to do. “If you have a boiler fitted by a gas engineer who isn’t registered to do the work, then you may end up paying to have it ripped out and start again which may cost you thousands of pounds. “It may also put your life in danger,” warns Phill Brewster, Gas Safe Register’s national investigations manager. “Money may be tight so it’s understandable that people ask around for recommendations in the hope of getting a good job done.

But with 250,000 illegal gas jobs done every year by cowboys, it’s shocking that five times as many people would hire a gas engineer simply on trust rather than checking they’re safe, legal and Gas Safe-registered.” Incorrectly fitted, badlyrepaired or poorly-maintained gas appliances are a major cause of carbon monoxide poisoning. They can also lead to gas leaks, fires and explosions. On average more than 14 people a year die from carbon monoxide poisoning, and many more suffer health problems from carbon monoxide exposure directly related to gas. The poisoning effects of carbon monoxide can cause brain damage and other serious health problems. All gas work carried out in your home and in certain commercial premises should be done by a Gas Safe-registered engineer. This includes: I Installing, repairing or servicing a gas boiler. I Installing or repairing a gas fire, gas cooker or hob. Never DIY with gas. You will be putting yourself and your family in serious danger from carbon monoxide poisoning and gas explosions. In the right hands gas is perfectly safe, so it’s better

to be gas safe than sorry. Gas Safe Register advises: I Never trust a tradesman on recommendation alone. I Always ask for the Gas Safe Register ID card. It’s the only way you can guarantee that your engineer is legal. I Check on the back of the Gas Safe Register ID that the engineer is registered to carry out the work he intends to do in your home. If they’re registered to fit gas boilers, it doesn’t mean they are automatically qualified to put in a gas fire. I Get your gas appliances regularly serviced and safety checked every year, or in accordance with your manufacturer’s guidelines, by a Gas Safe registered engineer. I Fit an audible carbon monoxide alarm which will alert you to the presence of the poisonous gas carbon monoxide, produced by unsafe gas appliances. I Check a gas engineer is registered by visiting www.GasSafeRegister.co.uk For more advice on avoiding illegal gas fitters visit www.GasSafeRegister.co.uk or call 0800 408 5500.

ASOS jobs boost for local people EIGHT out of ten of the new jobs created by online retailer ASOS are going to Barnsley people. Barnsley Development Agency director Carol CooperSmith said they had worked closely with the fashion giant, which is opening a warehouse at Grimethorpe, to ensure local jobs went to local people. She said: “They’ll be employing 1,000 people and they’ll be expanding over the next five years. Seventyeight per cent of all recruits come from Barnsley and I think that’s a fantastic strike rate.” At the regeneration scrutiny commission meeting Mrs Cooper-Smith said the success was down to working with ASOS and JobCentre Plus directly. Coun Dave North said ASOS’s move to Grimethorpe was ‘excellent news’ for the community. He said: “It’s a first-class firm that’s well-established and it’s been trying to recruit local people by going into local communities. It’s also made great links with primary schools by donating money for them to have different things.” Some of those who applied for a job struggled in a basic reading and maths exam that every employee must pass. Barnsley College has organised for a special refresher course to boost the pass rate.

Pre-season bowling meeting THE pre-season general meeting of the Worsbrough Bridge Bowling Club will be held tomorrow at the Welfare Hall, at 7.30pm. Subs can be paid and all are welcome.

BA was chosen as one of the companies which has notorious difficulties with catering. Actually, what we serve is good quality. “Before filming started, I think Heston believed it would be like catering at his restaurant, The Fat

Duck in Bray. “He did not fully take into account some of the limitations on an aircraft. People’s taste buds alter at altitude so the food appears duller than it really is. “Viewers will also see the chaos in the aircraft’s galley. Airlines don’t have super-duper ovens. You are really re-heating food. “Heston was really down to earth. He was not all starry or showy. He drew

on our experience.” The episode, which broadcast last Tuesday, was filmed on flights between Heathrow and New York, Boston and Dubai. Simon grew up on

HOSPITAL PRIEST HANGS UP HIS COLLAR AFTER 22 YEARS’ SERVICE BY KATE PICKLES THE chaplain at Barnsley Hospital has retired after 22 years’ service.

Retired: Rev Dr Peter Yates.

Rev Dr Peter Yates, 63, gave his last service at the hospital chapel last Sunday. He is retiring to spend more time with his family, continue his academic studies and do things he enjoys such as going to the theatre.

“I have been very happy here. I have felt that it has been a very rewarding and worthwhile ministry,” he said. “I have always felt appreciated by the hospital and fully supported by staff and volunteers here. I will miss it.” Dr Yates said the job had been rewarding and diverse. “There have been times I have been called upon to bless weddings,

I have had memorial services for staff and special services for times of the year like Christmas. An annual service for parents who have lost babies and children has always been well attended.” Dr Yates, the first full-time chaplain at Barnsley Hospital, began life in the ministry as a curate and was a vicar in a parish at Sandbach, Cheshire. He decided it was time for a

change and spent ten years as a chaplain in a psychiatric hospital in Merseyside before moving to Barnsley. He studied for a PhD in psychological therapy and Christian theology while he worked at the hospital. “I will stay in Barnsley and will still help out local clergy and parishes but I will have more time to visit family and spend time with my grandchildren who live away.”

County Court is to move to Westgate BARNSLEY County Court on Regent Street will close for the last time on Wednesday March 23. It will remain closed until the following Tuesday, March 29, when it reopens in the magistrates’ court building on Westgate. Any urgent court business between these dates will be dealt with by Sheffield County Court at West Bar. The work of Barnsley County Court, on the corner of Eastgate and Regent Street, was originally going to be moved to Sheffield, but that decision was changed following objections by the council, MPs, solicitors and voluntary groups.
