Teen’s emotional appeal to help find her dad THE heartbroken daughter of a man who has been missing for almost four months said she ‘just wants him to be safe’ and wants to remind him he is loved. Bethany Dainty, 19, gave an emotional appeal for information about her dad who she has not seen since November last year as it approaches almost four months since he went missing. Richard Dyson, 57 was last seen on November 17 and was reported missing on November 25 after he failed to get in contact with Bethany. The last known sighting of Richard was on November 17 at around 11pm when he was seen walking towards the A6135 Sheffield Road in Hoyland, close to Parkside Cottage near to where he had been staying. “He has always liked being outside,” said Bethany. “He liked collecting things like old bottles and we would go and spend all day looking for old bottles which he would collect – we called

it bottle digging and it was really fun. “Before he was missing he told us he was living in a caravan he bought and I didn’t think anything of it because he liked the outdoors and it was something he would do. It was only when I reported him missing that I found out that he had been living in his car which shocked me.” Richard was out of work and had promised to decorate some rooms in his friend’s house before he went missing and would have been paid £100 for the work. Bethany last saw her dad on November 15 when Richard dropped her off at her boyfriend’s house. “He seemed all right,” said Bethany. “He went into a corner shop and bought himself a sandwich and some crisps I think. There was no need to believe that anything was wrong, he was his usual self. “The money would have been a lot for him and he would have done the work. “He was always tinkering

STILL MISSING: Richard Dyson. and mending something. He would take apart engines and put them back together – he’s really smart so if he said he was going to do something he would.” Almost four months after Bethany last saw her dad, she has made an appeal for information to help bring him home. “I just want to know that he is all right,” she said. “If he doesn’t want to come back that’s ok but I just want to know he is ok. I don’t know why he hasn’t come back. “He didn’t take any clothes with him or any of his cars which he was really proud

of so he must have been walking. “Dad, I miss you and I want you to get in touch so we know you’re all right and we can try to help you. I miss going bottle digging and you coming round on Sundays for Sunday dinner. I miss your sense of humour when you would make me laugh by asking me to make a noise like a mushroom. You’ve always been there for me so please get in touch so we can help you.” Detective Inspector Neil Coop from Barnsley said: “I’d urge everyone reading Bethany’s appeal to think long and hard about the information they may hold, which could help us locate Richard. “Even if you only know something very small, it may still help the inquiry.” Richard is described as 5ft 10’-6ft with short grey hair and was last seen wearing a navy Kappa jacket with white stitching. If you have any information about Richard phone 101 quoting incident number 459 of November 25 2019.

Group to Park and ride could provide a Trafficking push for victims to PR system cure for hospital’s problems get help BARNSLEY residents seeking a change in the country’s voting system have formed a new campaign group. Part of a national cross-party campaign, the Barnsley branch of the Make Votes Matter group is encouraging local people to back a transition towards proportional representation – which sees the percentage of votes a party receives reflect the percentage of seats it holds in government. The group claims the current first-past-thepost system ‘skews’ results in many constituencies such as Barnsley. Greg Needham, who set up the group, said: “I come from a small working class community in Barnsley and I have seen this town over the decades sink into a relentless social and economic decline. “I cannot help but think that if every vote – if every person – in this town mattered, this would not be the case.”

RESIDENTS’ views are now being sought on potential plans to create a park and ride facility near the M1 following ‘years’ of complaints about congestion near Barnsley Hospital, the Chronicle can reveal. Hospital bosses identified what they believe is suitable land at Capitol Park in Dodworth for the scheme due to ongoing issues with inconsiderate parking on clogged-up side streets around Gawber Road and Summer Lane. Nurses complained last month that they had left their cars in residential areas due to costly parking fees, but claimed residents had retaliated by damaging vehicles. Coun Peter Fielding, who represents the Dodworth ward, hopes the plan will mirror the success of Doncaster Royal Infirmary’s facility and alleviate rising tension between hospital users and residents. He added: “Everyone’s keen to find a solution – I’ve met with leaders at the hospital and they’re very keen on the park and ride scheme. “I urge Barnsley Council to consult with locals and councillors at an early stage in whatever they press ahead

with as it’s important views are gauged.” About £250,000 has already been spent upgrading the hospital’s car park barriers to improve traffic flow, while car share schemes have been encouraged, but bosses admitted that the current parking provision is simply not big enough with approximately 3,800 staff – excluding visitors – battling over 1,200 spaces. Councillors representing the Old Town ward are particularly concerned about the impact of pollution on children attending primary schools in the area, with nitrous oxide levels now only one point below triggering an air quality action zone, something which is in place close by off junction 37 of the M1. Cabinet spokesman Coun Chris Lamb confirmed that Barnsley Council will gauge residents’ responses to a public consultation, which started last month, before announcing the next move. He added: “We all recognise this issue as it’s been a problem for many years, particularly for those residents who live nearby. “We’re working alongside the hospital and the ultimate aim of that is to reduce the impact

A CHARITY supporting survivors of human trafficking is set to expand into Barnsley. The Snowdrop Project offers one-to-one support, lasting from a few months to several years. The charity, set up in 2012, also provides training to professionals who may come into contact with such people. Snowdrop Project senior caseworker Hannah Rudman will become area lead for Barnsley. Hannah said: “We offer services in Sheffield and Rotherham but since we began participating in the South Yorkshire Modern Slavery Partnership, it became even more obvious that there is of traffic and parking after stoic more bicycle use. Its move to Barnsley comes after rising cases of vulnerable people or foreign workers being exploited led to council leader Sir Steve Houghton and chief executive Sarah Norman signing a multi-council charter against modern slavery – alongside Sheffield, Rotherham, Bradford, Calderdale and Kirklees – due to its tendency to involve organised crime groups from county to county. Milestone moment for longest married couple ‘NEVER falling out’ is the secret to a long marriage according to Barnsley’s longest-married couple. Donald and Margaret Shenton, of Moorland Terrace, Cudworth, met when they were 17, after attending a dance at a church. Donald, who was born in Cudworth, had to complete two years’ national service, but when he returned in 1949, he proposed to Margaret and the pair married on February 18 the following year. “Margaret’s dad said that she was too young to get married at 20-years-old,” said Donald, 91. “Following our wedding we moved in with Margaret’s mum on Darton Lane, Staincross, where we remained for four years before moving to Pye Avenue, Cudworth. “We then moved to Newtown Avenue before finally settling on Moorland Terrace in the house that used to belong to Sir Michael Parkinson, who is a good friend of ours.” As a married couple, Donald worked on the railways as a signalling man for 49 years, before becoming a councillor for the Cudworth and Urban District Council, where he was the finance chairman. Donald was also a school gov-

In 1968, Donald was awarded with a British Empire Medal in the Queen’s birthday honours list. “The medal was awarded by Geoffrey Rippon as the Queen was in South Africa at the time. She did send a letter of apology for not being able to be there, which was lovely,” explained Donald. Margaret, now 90, worked as a dinnerlady at Birkwood Primary School for more than 20 years. The couple had one son, Michael, and they have two

grandchildren, one of whom died when he was aged seven, and they also have a great-granddaughter. The couple celebrated their anniversary with their family at home and received a card from the Queen in recognition of their platinum anniversary. Donald said: “We’ve had many wonderful years and we’ve been on so many holidays. “We’ve always had similar interests and we never fall out and combined with love and all the other cliches, I think that’s the secret to long marriage.”

Super swimming instructor Rob is making a real splash with his hard work and patience A SWIMMING instructor and charity fundraiser has been praised for ‘never stopping his hard work’. Rob Blackburn, of Guest Street, Hoyland, works for Barnsley Premier Leisure Centre and teaches at both Royston Leisure Centre and the Metrodome. The 38-year-old teaches around 450 children per week in a variety of classes, and also teaches adults. He has been praised by many parents for what he does. One mum, Emma Moss, said her daughter Millie – who has additional needs – is taught by Rob every Tuesday evening and the sixyear-old’s confidence has grown thanks to Rob’s work. “Millie has a lot of additional needs that are complex,” said Emma, of Royston. “She is autistic, has ADHD, learning

disabilities, asthma and other needs. “Rob is so good with her and the other children. He has added an extra 15 minutes to the sessions for one-to-one time so he can focus on the children separately and he is so patient. “Millie absolutely loves going swimming now and with anyone teaching her to swim it’s got to be Rob and only Rob. She always feels safe with him and can’t wait to go every Tuesday. “She had been knocked back by three different swimming instructors and was told she was ‘too much for them’ while she was removed from some classes as she gets too excited. “He’s a great person, if I could put him on a pedestal I would.” As well as teaching, Rob also takes part in the Great North Swim every year, raising funds for

different charities that are close to his heart. “I love my job,” said Rob. “I have been teaching for the last 11 years now. I teach all different age groups and I love it. It’s great seeing little ones progressing from arm bands to swimming about in the water. “I swim up at the lakes every year. What set me off was I had a friend who lived across the road from me and he was getting a lot of help from Macmillan. I swam a mile a day for three weeks and did it for Macmillan. I ended up with a few friends from it and now we do the Lakes every year for a different charity. “I’m doing one for a special charity at the moment but I’m keeping that hidden for now. “It’s so nice to hear this praise from the parents and to know that I’m doing a good job.”

MP John backing Great British Spring Clean campaign

HANDS ON: Litter-picking MP John Healey (blue shirt).

DEARNE MP John Healey wants people to join a series of litter picks starting next month. As part of the British Spring Clean campaign, John is running a number of clean-ups in areas covered in rubbish. The Great British Spring Clean campaign aims to

spruce up streets and parks in order to protect the wildlife which occupies these areas. Work was done locally last year, but it already needs more attention. He said: “We have some fantastic local groups who go out clearing up litter every week, because they love where they

live and want to make it better. “I’ve been out with them and have been so impressed by volunteers going out week after week, even though it’s sometimes disheartening to see more rubbish dropped just days afterwards. “I hope this will give our volunteer groups a bit of a boost

and help turn blighted pieces of land into beauty spots.” Anyone who has an area in the Wentworth and Dearne constituency that needs cleaning then send your photos to john.healey.mp@parliament. uk or drop them into his MP’s office at 79 High Street, Wathupon-Dearne.

Warning over speeding on ‘danger road’

Areas on the radar TWO AREAS in Athersley that have been experiencing ‘a lot of issues’ are now the top priority for police. Both Beeston Square and Standhill Crescent were made the PACT priority at the most recent Darton and North Area PACT meeting, after concerns were raised over antisocial behaviour. The meeting, chaired by Cath Fairweather, took place at the TARA Office, Mansfield Road last Monday and covered the two Darton council wards as well as St Helen’s and Old Town. Concerns were raised over empty properties in these areas attracting antisocial behaviour. Members agreed they should become the new PACT priority after PC Bev Frisby suggested that it is ‘in hand’. PC Frisby said: “It is in hand and all relevant agencies are on board to deal with the issues. “There are currently a lot of plans behind the scenes that are likely to come to fruition. “These areas are causing a lot of issues that are linked, but I think this PACT priority is achievable.”

A PETITION to lower the speed limit on a ‘danger road’ has been gathering signatures after worries were raised over the potential of a serious accident being caused. Coun Steve Hunt, who represents the Darton East ward, is leading a campaign to lower the limit on Staincross Common to 30mph after concerns over the high amounts of speeding traffic on the road. Coun Hunt, along with campaigner Richard Denton, has been encouraging residents who live on Staincross Common and Windhill Lane to sign the petition. The councillor, who has been continually vocal about the issue at local police meetings, hopes the campaign will make the council install further safety measures on the road. “I’ve had residents contacting me about speeding on Staincross Common since I became a councillor, and have raised the issue on a regular basis at police meetings,” he said. “What we’re seeing is more and more traffic on this road as it is a way for people to get onto the motorway.

“A resident on Windhill Lane has got an elderly father, and the parking for them is at the other side of the road on a lay-by, which is getting more difficult and dangerous for them to access. “When you get to Windhill Farm and the stables, it is getting increasingly difficult for both horse and rider. “What we’re looking to do is to extend the 30mph zone all the way along the road.” The petition, which currently has more than 100 signatures, will be presented to the council. “At the moment, we’re trying to garner as many signatures as we can and then we will present the petition to the council,” added Coun Hunt. “The council has said to me that there hasn’t been sufficient serious incidents on this road and there has been little money for road safety measures at the moment. “I can understand where they are coming from but in my view, there needs to be something done now, before there is a serious accident.” Local resident Andrew Madden, 73, who lives on Staincross

Common, added: “I’d say that more than 500 vehicles a day, every day, are breaking the speed limit on Staincross Common. “And that goes for motorbikes, lorries, all types of vehicles. “We get so much traffic, with high amounts of heavy goods, coming from this road that are trying to get to the Haigh crossroads, which in itself is an accident black spot.” Mr Denton, who is helping to lead the campaign, said: “It’s not a problem that is unique to this road. There are other areas in and out of Darton and Mapplewell that encounter the same issues and concerns about road safety and speeding. “It is hopefully the start of a bigger conversation around the borough – we have to start somewhere.” Coun Chris Lamb, cabinet spokesperson for environment and transport, said: “The enforcement of speed limits on the highway is a police responsibility and any concerns over speeding vehicles by residents should be directed to the police, who may consider the site for some local speed enforcement.”

Tour opening up real opportunities for town PENISTONE is gearing up for an exciting time with the Tour de Yorkshire. The town and surrounding area is back on the route of the cycling showpiece this year. And the village of Oxspring can boast the first sprint section of the day as the event passes through. For the first time, too, the area will see both men’s and women’s races. Members of Penistone Area Council have been given an update on what to expect on Saturday May 2. Stephen Miller, Barnsley Council community development officer, told the council: “We are excited to be back on the route. “This is a really big event and Penistone has a great tradition of delivering on such occasions.” Mr Miller said that on May 2, the men’s and women’s races will pass through the area – the first time Penistone has hosted the women’s event. It is also the race’s heritage day, opening up opportunities to showcase what the area has to offer. He said that after starting in Barnsley, the riders will be coming from Worsbrough, past Wentworth Castle, Thurgoland, Oxspring, Springvale and up Shrewsbury Road on to Bridge

PEDAL POWER: Last year’s Tour passes through Royston. End, Thurlstone and Millhouse Green before heading into Kirklees. That day is the Barnsley to Huddersfield route. “We have the only sprint section going through Oxspring,” said Mr Miller. “It will be spectacular. We are renowned for getting the community involved and we are on with that now and need to get the enthusiasm going.” A roadshow about the event is

set for Cubley Hall on Thursday, March 26 from 6pm to 8pm and there will also be workshops on land art for each ward. “We have some fantastic heritage assets the race will be passing and we need to make the most of them,” said Mr Miller. Coun Hannah Kitching added: “It’s going to be fantastic. It is great we are planning activities around the whole day as, of course, the riders will be past each place in a flash.”

Tiredness kicks in as Reds beaten at Reading GERHARD Struber said fatigue was a main cause of Barnsley’s 2-0 loss at Reading as their three-game winning run ended. The Reds were playing their seventh game in February and Struber believes his young and inexperienced squad are tired due to that schedule. A first half strike from Yakou Meite and one in the second half from George Puscas did the damage in Berkshire. Sturber said: “It was a difficult game with one or two unlucky situations for us. We had top chances but we didn’t take them. Over the whole game, we didn’t have the energy to win this game. That was the key in the end. The last games took out a lot of energy from my boys and it is not easy to always play at our limit. “Other teams have more experience and the big challenge for us with young players is to play in the Championship with this schedule with the energy level we need.” Barnsley are now five points

from safety with ten to play. Struber said: “It’s so close. The league is very difficult. We have to work, we give everything we can and we have a big chance to stay in the league.” Struber was disappointed with the opening goal when Jacob Brown looked set to clear on the line before the ball trickled in. He said: “We were not clear in the first duel then the ball comes down and we are unlucky that we could not clear it. It was a disappointing moment in the game.” Struber said his decision to change to a 3-4-1-2 formation was not a factor in the defeat, despite reverting to a 4-4-2 diamond at half-time. He said: “It was not about the formation, it was more about the energy. “In the first half, Reading had too much space and we always had to run. “In the second half, we played without intensity or speed in our game.”

Woodrow hits winner CAULEY WOODROW’S goal earned Barnsley a third straight win, 1-0 at Hull City, last Wednesday. The goal came three minutes before half-time at the KCOM Stadium. Despite the narrow margin, the Reds’ victory on Humberside was deserved, with Hull defender Matthew Pennington making three goal-line clearances. Hull goalkeeper George Long also denied Jacob Brown one-on-one just after Barnsley took the lead. Long was at fault for the goal as he could only push a firm low cross from the left back into play, and Woodrow poked the ball in. Michael Sollbauer came closest to a second goal for the Reds with a rightfoot shot and the goalkeeper stranded, only for Pennington to make the best of his clearances. “We knew what Hull do and we had very good conviction in our style,” said Barnsley head coach Gerhard Struber. “I’m very happy and very proud of the team. “In the past few weeks, we have done the right things and had the right game plan.”
