Rockers book in UK tour for 2017 ROCK legends Iron Maiden are gearing up to bring their hugely successful The Book of Souls World Tour to the UK in 2017. The tour will see the band head off across Europe with a number of arena and stadium shows, stopping off in England for eight dates, including a Sheffield Arena show in May. The Book Of Souls World Tour opened in Florida, in February 2016 visiting 36 countries using their new 747 jumbo jet Ed Force One which flew the band, crew and 22 tonnes of equipment over 61,500 miles across six continents during the 72 date leg playing to around 1.5 million fans. Iron Maiden founding member and bass player Steve Harris said: “As it’s been so long since our last full UK arena tour, we really wanted to get to our fans in as many cities as possible. “We’re really looking forward to it, especially visiting places we haven’t been to for a very long time like Leeds where we haven’t played since 2005 and Liverpool where we haven’t played since 1990. “The whole band is really enjoying this tour and although we love playing festivals and stadiums, it is terrific to return to the intimacy and atmosphere of arenas. “The songs from The Book Of Souls album and the new Maya-

LEGENDS: Iron Maiden, who will tour in 2017. themed stage sets have gone down really well and fan reaction has been amazing. And of course we know our fans appreciate us playing a lot of the older songs too, which we will continue to do.” The Book Of Souls is Maiden’s first ever double studio album and their most successful chart-wise to date, debuting at the number one spot in over 40 countries around the globe. Special Guests on all shows will

be American arena headliners Shinedown. Band member, Zach Myers, said: “Iron Maiden are the kings of metal and one of the greatest live bands of all time. “It’s an honour to be touring with them in Europe and in their home country and to play in front of their fans. We can’t wait to see you in 2017.” Tickets for the Sheffield Arena show on May 10 2017, are on sale now.

ESSENTIAL: Take care of your pet’s coat.

Ensure your pets have a warm winter AS the weather continues to get colder, many pets will be getting their ‘winter coat’. But without care and attention, animals’ coats can become matted and dull. Simon Bandy, from PetVits, which produces a range of nutritional products for your pets, said: “Cats and dogs can develop dull coats and dry skin as the weather turns colder and the central heating goes up. “Although our pets need grooming on a regular basis, any change in season makes it more important to ensure your pet’s fur and skin is kept well-groomed and healthy - not only for appearance but also for good well-being.” Bathing your dog is essential, especially if they are prone to running through muddy puddles. However, the trick is to not overdo it as this can strip away natural oils from their skin. Once a month should suffice as general rule. Opt for a natural shampoo that contains moisturising ingredients such as vitamin E that will leave the coat soft and shiny. If your dog suffers with dry itchy skin, add a tied sock of soothing porridge oats to the bath. Brushing is also essential and should be done daily. It helps to remove dead skin particles and flea eggs and stimulates the skin to

produce good natural oils. As you brush, check for ticks or other parasites. Choose a brush or come recommended for your breed. If your pet persistently has dry, itchy or flaky skin, it is wise to seek advice from your veterinarian as it could be caused by a medical problem. Cats clean themselves by licking, which leads to fur balls. Regular combing can reduce the amount swallowed and left on your sofa. As with dogs, brushing will help with the production of natural oils which aids skin and coat health. Cats are highly likely to come home with grass seeds or goosegrass stuck in their fur, which if left unattended, can lead to matted knots - much less fun to try and remove. Generally, cats aren’t big fans of water and unless they’re horrendously dirty, shouldn’t need to be given a bath. Start off from an early age with grooming and stroke your cat at the same time as brushing - they should come to love the attention and special fussing time. If not, bribe them with treats. All animals need a healthy and balanced diet. Dogs and cats should eat protein-packed food that contains omega fatty acids – which will aid with a glossy coat and healthy joints too.

How much? One in ten online shoppers back out at checkout ONE in ten online shoppers abandon their shopping basket at checkout when they see how much they could be spending. The findings by Royal Mail, suggest UK adults could be experiencing cold feet associated with spending more than they have or more than they set out to spend, leading them to abandon their baskets altogether. A third of shoppers fre-

quently abandon their online basket after loading it up with items, with price savvy younger customers being the most difficult age group to convert from online browsers to buyers. Other reasons given by consumers for not sealing the deal on online orders include, “I was just browsing,” “I found a better deal somewhere else,” and “I got interrupted when placing my order”.

Take in little lady Fleur THIS week’s Stray of the Week is Fleur from Royston Animal Welfare (RAW). Fleur is a petite little lady of around six months old. She loves attention and playtimes but will be the first to tell you when she’d had enough. She definitely knows what she wants and would be best suited to someone who has had cats before. Fleur has lived with other cats but not dogs, and would not suit a family with very young children. Sharon Whittaker from RAW said: “Little Fleur needs guidelines to follow as nobody bothered with her in her previous home, she would love some stability in her life with time to play and enjoy her kitten-hood.” For information phone number on 07874945689.

OAPs are doing all sorts to stay active VOLUNTEERING on a chicken farm, restoring old cars and keeping a paddle steamer running are just some of the things that retired over 50s get up to while they wait for their partner to give up work. New research from Saga Investment Services surveyed married and cohabiting over 50s to uncover how long people wait for their partner to join them in retirement and how they spent their time. Fewer than one in ten couples retired at the same time. There was a gap of a year for just one in seven and a two year wait for almost a quarter of couples. However, a third waited between three and five years for their partner to retire, while three in ten waited more than five years. But these retirement ‘gappers’ weren’t beset by boredom while they waited for their partner to join them in their new workless life. While one in ten said they felt lonely on their solo retirement journey, the great majority were liberated by the time off they had while waiting for a partner to retire. Overall, 83 per cent said they either took up a hobby or volunteered during this period. The research revealed that the top ways retired over 50s spent their time was doing DIY and housework, gardening, looking after grandchildren, exercising, volunteering, getting a new puppy and becoming ‘silver surfers’ – spending time on the internet brushing up on their computer skills. Some retirees even found innovative ways to spend their time. One volunteered at a chicken factory, while a small number joined local choirs. Maintaining law and order by becoming magistrates was also reported, while some said they spent their time playing computer games.

Teenage volunteers dig deep throughout borough GROUPS of teenagers across Barnsley have delivered more than 7,000 hours of volunteer work in their local community this summer during their time on the National Citizen Service (NCS) programme. The teenagers took part in the two to three week youth empowerment programme which took place across the borough during school holidays. The programme helps young people expand their horizons while learning keys skills for work and life. As part of the social action projects teens met with local organisations and charities who taught them how their efforts can make a real impact on the community. One group, after meeting at Owd Martha’s Yard in Hoyland, decided to dedicate their project and support to this community garden. Owd Martha’s Yard was donated an unloved plot of land with a vision to create green space where locals can come together to grow flowers, vegetables and develop a place where the town can hold old fashioned fairs and galas. The young

people on NCS played a key role in supporting and sharing this vision. Alison Richardson from Owd Martha’s Yard said: “It is great to see the enthusiasm of the NCS young people, they just rolled their sleeves up and literally got stuck in. “With a bit of guidance they built compost bins, raised a bed, and cleared scrubland. But what shone through was their togetherness. They are a credit to the scheme of NCS, their families but most of all to themselves.”

The young people involved in this project have pledged to continue their support to complete this plot of land. Social action projects are taking place across the country with the NCS programme and this is just one of many examples of how young people are making a positive difference in their community. For more information about the programme visit:

It’s getting colder...but it’s time to get planting... WITH the arrival of autumn, tending to the garden at this time of the year may not be a priority but it is in fact the most important time. With the bulbing seasons nearly upon us, now is the time to consider the best bulbs.

Winter can be a gloomy, so why not inject colour into your life with three of the most vibrant plants? Amaryllis which come in white, red or pink, hyacinths in dark blue, white or red and pink, narcissus are white, cream, yellow and white with

a yellow cup. Plant hyacinth bulbs every two weeks from the beginning of September until mid-October to provide a variety of fragrant blooms. Plant narcissus early autumn to flower in time for Christmas.

Firms reminded about fire safety BARNSLEY businesses are being reminded of their duties under fire safety laws, as part of a major national awareness campaign. South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue is calling on businesses in the town to make sure their fire risk assessments and staff training is up to date and that their alarm systems are working properly. This week fire awareness week seeks to get businesses to engage with local fire services to help manage their fire risk, get advice on completing fire risk assessments and ensure business continuity. SYFR Business fire safety manager Amy Jenkinson, said: “Our aim is always to engage with local businesses in a positive way and to work with

them to make improvements before we have to resort to taking enforcement action, which may include closing part or all of a building, or resort to criminal prosecution. “But the recent increase in the number of prohibition notices served is worrying and we’d urge business owners to take the time to learn about their responsibilities under fire safety legislation and complete a fire risk assessment to reduce the likelihood of suffering a serious incident which could put their business and their people in danger.”

Top safety tips for businesses include: Keep fire escapes clear- make sure

extra stock is stored away from fire escapes, ensuring staff and customers can get out safely in the event of a fire. Check alarm systems- regular checks and maintenance help to eliminate false alarms and ensure the alarm is working if required. Complete a fire risk assessment — not only will it help to reduce the risk of suffering a fire in the first place, it will help make sure you comply with fire safety laws. Sprinklers — consider installing sprinklers, but make sure you leave a good distance between your stock and sprinkler heads.

Leanne excited about her Cold Feet Challenge THIRTEEN years after its last season, acclaimed comedy-drama Cold Feet is back. Joining its established cast is Leanne Best who is ready to meet her new, biggest challenge. With well-received roles in Home Fires, Line of Duty and Undercover bringing the Liverpool-born actress to the attention of show creator Mike Bullen, the call to join the landmark ITV show ended a hectic and fulfilling year for Best, who was whisked straight into the action without a moment’s delay. She said: “It had already

been a busy year, and then we started filming in January. It was probably good that it was so quick, otherwise I’m sure I would have got nervous about joining one of the biggest, if not the biggest, TV shows we’ve made in Britain.” With such a sizeable void left when the original show bowed out in 2003, the pressure on the original cast to live up to the expectations of fans was vast, let alone for newcomer Leanne. For such a dedicated actress, however, those initial fears were allayed.

An added bonus, of course, was the ease at which the original cast – including household names like James Nesbitt, Faye Ripley and Hermione Norris – took the new charges under their wing. Leanne said: “It was only me making myself nervous, because everyone was so warm and welcoming. “It’s like an amazing album that’s both a generational thing, and something that then gets rediscovered and rediscovered over and over again,” she said.

NEWCOMER: Leanne Best.

WATERSAFE is urging anyone planning plumbing work to make sure they know the ‘water law’ before they start. In many cases, work on new and existing plumbing systems, and some types of water installations, needs to be notified to, and approved by, the local water company before it can begin. This is to make sure it meets the Water Supply Regulations and Byelaws that are designed to keep drinking water supplies safe and healthy. The warning doesn’t just apply to plumbers either CHEERS: Gregor Staric of Oak Star Cafe, and Dave businesses, homeowners, Broadhead, general manager of Acorn Brewery. landlords and tenants all need to follow the regulations too. Julie Spinks, director of of Mexborough WaterSafe, said: “UK homes and businesses enjoy high-quality, safe drinking water and it is important it stays that way. “Unfortunately very few people are aware of their legal responsibilities to ensure certain types of plumbing work complies with these regulations. “Getting permission is quick and free, but failure to notify the local water Full range EVERY GARMENT FULLY supplier could result in GUARANTEED FOR 12 MONTHS of extra cost to put poor bikers’ FULL REPAIR and ALTERATION SERVICE plumbing right or, worse, leathers OPEN: Mon. to Sat. 10am-5pm, Sun. 11am-3pm contamination of water supUnit C, Cliff Street, Industrial Estate, Mexborough plies and a court Tel (01709) 570144 NO tion. By Nick Ward DOING business over a beer is what it’s all about. The Barnsley Beer and Business Club is a networking event set up by two local businessmen and it’s proving very popular indeed. David Broadhead, general manager at Acorn Brewery, and Gregor Staric, owner of the Oak Star Cafe, got their heads together a few months ago and decided that it was time that the town had an informal regular networking date written into the diary. The next event takes place at the Civic today between 5pm and 7pm.

David said: “Greg and I were having a beer in the Old No 7 when we hit upon the idea of setting up a regular business club that would be pretty relaxed and friendly, with the focus on a quick beer and a chat rather than a formal structure. “So far it’s worked really well with a couple of events at the Old No 7 and one at the Oak Star Cafe. “We’ve just had a bit of summer break and following that our friends at Barnsley Civic have kindly offered their terrific space for the September gathering. “That’s just as well because we already have around 100 local busi-

ness people booked on to the next event.” While it’s called The Barnsley Beer and Business Club, David did point out: “Other beverages are available but as manager of Acorn Brewery it would be rude not bring some of our local brew along.” He added: “Greg also usually spoils us with some samples of his excellent cuisine from the Oak Star Cafe. ‘Going forward we’re looking to have a regular monthly event and to use a variety of venues throughout the town.”

DISCOVERY: Children getting involved with nature through art.

Kids connecting with nature through art BARNSLEY children are getting the opportunity to connect with nature through art. Often when we try and think of something beautiful, we think of something from nature. But many children no longer have the opportunity to play with natural objects, and experts have coined the phrase ‘nature deficit disorder’ to explain the lack of connection with the natural world. Faceless Arts, a Wakefield based company which specialises in creative community engagement, will work with hundreds of children across South Yorkshire this autumn to help them to tack-

le this issue and creatively reconnect them with their local natural environment. Bev Adams, from Faceless Arts, said: “Yorkshire has many stunning natural landscapes and beautiful parks, which people travel from all over the world to experience. “However, due to a variety of societal changes, the current generation of children are not experiencing nature in the way that past generations have. “Creativity budgets have also been removed from school curriculums. So we believe that society needs an intervention and we

are in good position to help by creating Art Comes Naturally.” Art Comes Naturally, is a partnership between Faceless Arts and artist James Brunt which aims to reconnect children and their families with their local open spaces, helping them express themselves creatively. This opportunity will enable children aged eight and over, and their families to make beautiful art in picturesque natural landscapes, it will reintroduce them to nearby green spaces, connect them to their neighbours and create an environment where families, children and young people

can spend time together being creative in the outdoors. Five local schools are signed up to participate between September 30 and October 26 in five local green spaces. At the end of each week the school children and their local communities are invited to additional family sessions, with one taking place at Elsecar Park on October 15, where they can make engaging natural art and come face to face with the giant Faceless Arts Heron which gracefully towers above the crowds, cheekily searching for a place to nest.

Keep areas clutter free T

Bring mother nature’s beauty indoors RING the elements of nature inside your home all year round. The crisp serenity and beautiful colours of autumn are easy to introduce into your home with nature-inspired accessories.

You could use cushions, wallpaper or wall stickers designed with trees, colourful leaves and crisp autumn sunrises to enable you to immerse yourself in the beauty of the autumn season all year around.

HE latest beautifully designed fitted or freestanding media furniture combines sharp looks with neat shelving and cabinetry to keep living spaces organised and clutter free. A low level cabinet with individually decorated drawers and fitted with assorted knobs and handles, makes for a distinctive piece of furniture for a modern country scheme. The modern home subscription TV services and film streaming, means less DVD storage is needed in the living room. Gone are the days of storing items behind closed doors as the trend for open shelving TV wall units become a firm favourite. Designs are moving away from conventional straightlined surfaces towards more curved forms. Rich walnut woods, glass shelves and integrated spotlights are all contemporary styles for showcasing displays of ornaments, DVDs and books and the units suit open plan living. People want technology in their homes but don’t want it to dominate their living space, so a mix of open and closed storage, so screens and digital boxes can be hidden out of sight and accessories displayed, is a popular choice.

How you can achieve the country look in your home RING a vintageinspired, relaxed country look into your home with a few easy elements and finishing touches. 1. to give it that timeworn finish. If you’re artistic, then you could paint on vintage style floral patterns onto your furniture. Changing handles could also have a big impact on what furniture looks like, switch modern-style handles for brass vintage styles and

your furniture could look completely different. 2. Put up some open storage Spruce up your kitchen with some vintage style by fixing up a plate rack or other open storage unit between the kitchen wall cabinets. If you don’t want to spend a lot of money, then you can often find them at car boot sales or vintage fairs — this means you will also get a unique piece. Add a row of neat hooks to display your favourite mugs too. 3. Make a feature of linens Give a boring utility area some vintage flavour by hiding your washing machine behind a fabric curtain in a classic ticking stripe. 4. Dress windows with lace A simple way to give your bedroom a more vintage vibe in an instant is to hang up a single lace panel at the window to diffuse light. Keep the look simple by fitting a plain blackout roller blind behind the voile to shut out the early morning sunlight. 5. Add some French style The shabby chic look works wonderfully alongside French-inspired pieces of furniture. Look out for mirrors with ornate frames and swap out a modern bedside table for a classic dressing table — choose a style with an oval mirror and intricate wood decorations on the drawers.

Beautiful Homes

Using warm colours will beat the winter chill OW that the short lived summer is drawing to an end, we can start looking towards Hallowe’en and the bitterly cold months that await us. Cosying up and leaving the cold at the door is the best way to battle through the hostile temperatures, and having a fresh, colourful bed can make it all the more enjoyable. Two big colours for the autumn season this year are fuschia and orange. These two beautiful and bold, autumn colours could easily brighten up your room, while adding a seasonal flare to your bedroom interior at

the same time. These two beds may have a traditional elegance about them, but with a range of fabrics to be upholstered in, they can sit perfectly in any modern home. Allowing you to really switch up your interior styles and combine traditional and contemporary aspects. The two colours of the beds, by interior brand Living It Up, are ‘wild fuschia’ and ‘autumn orange’. Both are deep earthy tones and wouldn’t look out of place in a pile of freshly fallen autumn leaves, with

autumn orange being an intense rusty shade of orange and wild fuschia being a dark shade of purple, the striking colours will help you get the seasonal vibes and ease you into the long autumn evenings. The bed comes as a double, king size or super king size bed so whether you are cosying up with a hot chocolate for one or lying in bed with your other half watching TV because it’s too cold outside, there will be enough space for everyone. If a brightly coloured bed is too much for you, but you still fancy

injecting some warming autumn tones into your bedroom, then this can be done through coloured curtains, rugs, cushions or other accessories. If none of those colours are for you, then why not go for a deep teal or forest green — both bold colours perfect for this season. Both of these colours can be added more subtly to the room, rather than making a big statement. Keep the bed simple, and the bedding plain in a crisp white, furnishing the rest of the room with a range of bold colours.

Teal and forest green, would complement a fresh bedroom look really well. Lampshades, curtains, cushions and throws all will add an elegant deep colour to your room. These colours both look great complimented with brass and gold accessories. Other popular colours for this season are also greys and copper metallic colours, which both complement one another really well, and are perfect for anyone who prefers a minimalist look for their bedroom.

Choose a worktop to suit your kitchen design G. SMITH Design • Supply • Installation

Suppliers and fitters of

Kitchens • Bedrooms • Bathrooms HERE are lots of different materials which you can choose for your kitchen worktop and they all have different advantages, so it’s important to choose the best material to suit you. Think about practicalities, such as the maintenance of your worktop. If you have young children, a material that marks easily such as glass, is not ideal. If you like cooking, consider a heat-resistant material such as granite around your hob, so that you can move hot pans off the heat and onto the worktop. Hardwood surfaces are best used for food preparation and dining areas, for example, on islands and breakfast bars. Iroko and teak woods are ideal for using around the sink as they have a high oil content and are water resistant. The wood suits all kitchen styles and can be incorporated into a contemporary scheme using glass or stainless steel to add a warm up feel. Wipe up any spills on hardwood to prevent staining — it is also a good idea to seal with linseed oil every few months to stop it drying out. Any scratches on the wood can be sanded out with fine wire wool. If hardwoods are properly sealed and maintained they will last for a long time, but don’t use the work top as a chopping board, or place hot pans directly onto the wood, as

it can scorch. Composite materials are the ideal choice if you want your worktop to look seamless. It is a very practical and beautiful choice that can be used anywhere, including next to hobs and around the sink. It looks best when in dramatic colours such as a dark grey and blue, which look great in modern and contemporary kitchens. If your room is quite traditional, stick to neutrals such as cream. Composite is very tough and more durable than many natural stones. As the colour runs right the way through the material, any scratches can be sanded out. Granite worktops are very low maintenance, though spills like wine and vinegar must be mopped up immediately. It can be used in any area of the kitchen, including around the sink and next to the hob or oven. It is a luxury material that never falls out of fashion and suits traditional and modern styles. It would make a striking island work top and you can choose from a classic polished finished, or a matt look for a more contemporary style. Granite requires an initial sealing and then another about ten years later, but between that time will just need cleaning with a mild detergent. The material can withstand high

temperatures and is water resistant. Modern technology also means granite can be cut into a variety of shapes and sizes. Laminate work tops are great for general use including food preparation, sink runs and around hobs and cookers. They can accurately mimic other worktop materials, including granite, slate and wood so they will suit all kitchen styles. Laminate is resistant to most stains and chemicals, but not heat and steam, and is not suitable as a cutting surface. Glass gives a modern look and bounces light around the room. This material is best used around the sink or for focal-point breakfast bars. It is best used with contemporary schemes and can look out of place in country-style kitchens. As it is a very reflective surface it is useful as a feature worktop in small kitchens to increase the feeling of space. Glass for work surfaces is toughened to increase durability and is heat, acid and water resistant. It can be prone to scratches, but these can be polished smooth. There are good reasons why stainless steel is used in professional kitchens, including its hygienic and hard-wearing properties.
