What makes Sheffield’s Tramlines so appealing? alongside breaking talent at the newly increased 17,500-capacity main stage on Ponderosa Park offers up guaranteed greenfield festival vibes. If it weren’t for the rising tower blocks surrounding the park, you could easily forget you were in the centre of the city. 3. There’s no mud and no camping. Sheffield’s concrete jungle makes up the majority of the vast festival site. 4. There’s something to discover around every corner. Weird and wonderful street theatre fills Barker’s Pool, while the Peace Gardens offers up break-dancing battles and spray-can art. There’s also a new handpicked film programme at Showroom Cinema this year featuring. There are even arts and craft for the kids in family friendly areas like Weston Park. 5. You can party all day and all night. From 6pm on July 22 until 4am on July 25, consider the party in full swing. 6. It’s one of the best value festival tickets around.

WHEN Tramlines festival returns for the eighth year from July 22 to 24, taking over a plethora of venues and outdoors stages across Sheffield, it will fly the flag once again as the UK’s largest inner-city music festival. But how does it attract a whopping 100,000 musiclovers every year? The answer is more than just great music, here’s nine reasons why... 1. It turns a city into a festival. Tramlines takes the reins on four outdoor stages and 15 venues across the city-centre and beyond, creating one enormously lively festival, with music pouring from all types of venues. Tramlines spans alternative warehouse spaces such as Hope Works, the stunning cathedral, independent music venues including the Leadmill and The Harley, as well the city’s parks, with the forest glade in Endcliffe Park home to the Tramlines Folk Forest Stage. 2. It’s got an inner-city location with greenfield vibes, you can catch international headline acts

7. Expect proper musical diversity. R and B to psychrock, reggae to grime, techno to folk and hip-hop to afrobeat, variety is the spice of life, after all. With over half of the line-up made up of emerging artists, it’s the perfect place to discover your new favourite act. 9. It does good food. It might sound like a simple thing to achieve, but the reality is we’ve all eaten a festival burger that tastes like a flip-flop. Highlights at Tramlines include the gooey Twisted Burger Company, Proove Pizza’s wood-fired Napolitan pizzas, Jamaican jerk chicken and curried mutton from Caribbean Fusion, and this summer’s healthy treat, Fro by Jo, coconut-based frozen yoghurt with superfood toppings.

Radio presenter dons her trainers for Race for Life

Tips to keep plants cool in summer sun A GLASSHOUSE maker has given some timely advice about keeping plants cool in the summer sun. Paul Smith, the technical director of Griffin Glasshouses, warns that even in overcast weather the temperature inside can reach levels that are harmful to plants. “Small structures are most at risk because the volume of air compared to the glass area is small causing it to heat up very quickly. The best rule is that a glasshouse should have 25 per cent of the floor

areas as ventilation,” he explained. Paul’s top tips are: ■ Water last thing at night and early in the morning as this reduces the evaporation of moisture and also prevents water droplets forming on foliage and risking scorching. ■ If you are considering glasshouse shading, reflective material is best as this drives the heat away from the glasshouse. Darker colours absorb heat, sending it back into the building. ■ If you do not have shading there

are proprietary materials that can be painted or sprayed on to the inside of the glass. ■ Don’t forget that the doors can be a major source of ventilation and, if possible, they should remain open at night. ■ Vines are an excellent and natural form of shading. “Remember, if you are working in your glasshouse in the sun and it’s too hot for you, it is most probably the same for your plants,” said Paul.

BBC Radio Sheffield presenter, Paulette Edwards is lacing up her trainers and encouraging others to do the same as she joins this year’s Race for Life charity fundraising on July 3, hosted at Meadowhall. Race for Life is a series of fundraising events for women only, organised by British charity Cancer Research UK. They involve running, jogging or walking a five kilometre course and raising sponsorship for doing so. The money raised funds cancer research in all 200 types of cancer. Paulette said: “I’m very proud to be taking part in this year’s Race for Life at Meadowhall, and am looking forward to meeting people on the day and hearing their inspiring stories. If I can take part, anybody can.” Over the years tens of thousands of

women have been empowered to take action not only to improve their health and to achieve what they once thought impossible, but also to do something constructive to honour the memory of a loved one lost to cancer. Meadowhall events manager, Alex Caley, said: “Race for Life is an exceptional event which unites women of many different ages, and from all walks of life, together against a common cause: beating cancer. “We’re delighted that Paulette is joining Team Meadowhall this year and look forward to welcoming her, and the thousands of other women across the region who are also pledging their support.” ● To take part you can register:

STRAY of the WEEK THIS week’s Stray of the Week is Belle from Royston Animal Welfare (RAW). Belle is only a baby of approximately eight months old, she has only been with RAW for a short time and is now getting used to walking on a lead. Janette Ball, from RAW, said: “She is really friendly and gentle natured. She seems to be ok with other dogs, though she hasn’t been far on her walks yet. “She will need an owner with a little patience to get her walking on her lead with confidence, she seems a quick learner so this shouldn’t take too long.” For more information or to offer Belle a home, leave a message and phone number on 298271, or email If you’re looking to adopt a rescue

dog or cat, visit the RAW website at for details of all the animals currently in need of a loving home.

Wetherby Whaler’s got some sparkle THE Wetherby Whaler has joined forces with local microbrewery, Treboom, to offer its customers a beer especially suited to their fish and chips. The two family-owned Yorkshire businesses have announced a new partnership which will see Wetherby Whaler restaurants stock Treboom’s Yorkshire Sparkle pale ale. The Yorkshire Sparkle’s distinctive citrus taste, which is the result of a unique of combi-

nation of hops from around the world, complements and contrasts with Wetherby Whaler’s traditional beef dripping-fried fish and chips in much the same way a squeeze of lemon brings out the flavour of battered fish. The microbrewery, which was only established in 2012, is owned by husband and wife team, John Lewis and Jane Blackman and is based in Shipton-by-Beningbrough.

Phillip Murphy, co-owns the Wetherby Whaler with his wife, Janine, he said: “It’s fantastic to have Treboom’s Yorkshire Sparkle in our restaurants. “We have a very similar ethos to Treboom, which also does its upmost to use local suppliers and produce, not only that, but it also uses traditional methods that the big breweries have forgotten about or don’t think are worth the time and effort.” John said: “We’re exceptional-

ly pleased to have our Yorkshire Sparkle available in the Wetherby Whaler. Its citrus and grapefruit flavours are the perfect accompaniment to Wetherby Whaler’s famous fish and chips. “We strongly believe in pairing beer with food in the same way that wine has been for years, and on the back of all of our bottles is a guide for pairing that particular beer with different menus.”

Warning over house fires this summer SOUTH Yorkshire firefighters are warning the public to take extra steps to prevent house fires this summer, after revealing they have attended 150 accidental blazes during the last three football tournaments in which England have qualified. South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue attended 59 house fires during the last world cup and 58 during the same month long tournament in 2010 — both figures are higher than the number of incidents it attends on average each month. Crews also attended 33 incidents during the three week Euro 2012 tournament. Head of community safety Trevor Bernard, said: “Expectations for the England football team might be relatively low this summer, but sadly we fully expect to see another rise in fires as millions settle down to watch the tournament and probably have a drink at the same time. “Alcohol and cooking just don’t mix. It

makes you unco-ordinated and more likely to have a fire, and less likely to escape if you do have one. So if you’ve been to the pub to watch the match, grab a takeaway on the way home instead. And if you just can’t tear your eyes from the inevitable penalty shoot out, turn the cooker off and take the pan off the hob.” Home fire safety tips include: ● Make sure you have smoke alarms on every floor of your home and test them regularly. ● Take extra care in the kitchen and never leave cooking unattended. ● Never, ever use a chip pan or any other pan filled with hot oil. ● Don’t overload electric sockets, most can only take a maximum of 13 amps. ● Put out cigarettes properly and dispose of them carefully. ● For more tips on preventing fires visit

Protect yourself against deadly meningitis CHARITY Meningitis Now has joined GPs in expressing its concerns that only 30 per cent of those eligible to protect themselves from a particularly deadly strain of meningitis last winter chose to do so. In a report published in GP magazine, GP leaders highlight Public Health England figures that show MenACWY vaccine was given to just 30 per cent of those eligible in England, leaving thousands of young people at risk. With take up likely to be similar across all countries of the UK this means that up to 250,000 have not received the jab. All teenagers aged 17 and 18 are eligible to receive the ACWY vaccine for free since August last year. Older first-time

university entrants aged 19 to 25 can also claim the free vaccination, introduced to combat the rise in Men W cases in adolescents. Cases of bacterial meningitis can spike during the winter months and students are particularly susceptible. Meningitis symptoms can include sickness, fever, muscle pain, headaches, confusion, irritability, dislike of bright lights and a rash that doesn’t fade under pressure. Students should seek urgent medical help if they suspect the disease. To request a free signs and symptoms card or download a free app visit the website or call the charity’s freephone helpline on 0808 80 10 388.

Pets at Home workshop on how to care for rabbits TO coincide with Rabbit Awareness Week, June 18 to 26, Pets at Home in Barnsley is holding a series of free workshops on how to care for rabbits responsibly. Rabbit Awareness Week (RAW) is an annual event, where experts such as vets, pet retailers, welfare charities and manufacturers work together to educate people on how to give owned rabbits the best care possible. This year’s RAW campaign focus is on #BuddiesforBunnies. Like us, rabbits are social animals and need companionship. However 57 per cent of the UK’s pet rabbits live alone, and sadly, many owners simply don’t realise the impact solitude can have on their pet. The aim of the campaign will be a #BuddiesforBunnies pledge to inspire pet owners to consider suitable friends for their single rabbits by encouraging re-homing from welfare centres. To support the event, Pets at Home in Barnsley will be holding rabbit awareness workshops between until the

end of this week. To book your place, visit the Mark Evans, store manager at Pets at Home Barnsley said: “Rabbits are the third most popular choice of pet for British children, and can bring a very rewarding experience to adults and supervised older children. They’re highly intelligent, social, interactive and fun creatures that are extremely clean and can even be litter trained. Sadly, not all rabbit owners realise their pets thrive on companionship, and many end up living their whole lives alone. Our workshops will help to inform the rabbit lovers of Barnsley about responsible rabbit keeping and how to ensure these lovely animals are happy and healthy for their entire lives.” ■ For advice or information about rabbits, speak to one of Pets at Home’s trained in-store colleagues. A quick and easy snack to enjoy while out in the sun Warm Steak and beetroot sandwich with honey and mustard dressing Serves: Two Preparation time: Ten minutes Cooking time: 12 to 15 minutes You’ll need For the honey mustard dressing: l6 tbsp extra virgin olive oil l2 tbsp white wine vinegar l1 tbsp Dijon mustard l1 tbsp honey l1 small clove garlic, crushed lSalt and freshly ground black pepper For the sandwich: lA 2 to 3cm fat ribeye steak (approx. 225g weight) l1 tbsp olive oil lA little sea salt and freshly ground black pepper l2 to 4 shallots, finely sliced (for a summer version, replace the shallots with a handful of peppery watercress leaves) l2 to 3 cooked beetroot, sliced lA ciabatta loaf, cut in half and sliced open What to do: Firstly, make the dressing by putting everything in a small jar with a tight fitting lid. Shake well until thoroughly mixed and season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Heat the oil in a heavy based frying pan until smoking hot.

Season the steak on both sides with a little salt and freshly ground black pepper. Lay the steak in the pan and fry, undisturbed, on one side for two to three minutes. Flip over and fry on the other side for a further two to three minutes. For a two to three cm thick piece of meat these timings should give you a medium steak. Cook a little less for rare, a little more for well done. Remove the steak and allow to rest on a warm plate tightly covered in foil. Add the shallots to the frying pan and fry for a few minutes over a medium high heat until softening and beginning to caramelise. Remove to a plate and keep warm. Lay the ciabatta, cut side down, in the frying pan and toast lightly for a minute or two. Slice the steak into one cm wide strips across the grain and divide between two pieces of ciabatta. Top with the sliced beetroot and fried onions. Drizzle over a little of the dressing and cover with the top of the ciabatta. Serve immediately. Any leftover dressing with keep in the fridge for at least a week.

Tips to detox for the beach IN need of a detox before you hit the beach this summer? Follow these tips to look and feel your best. 1. Swap black tea, coffee and alcohol for herbal tea, different types have different benefits like supporting the kidneys or cleansing the liver. 2. Drink at least one litre of water per day. Keep a bottle by your desk and sip regularly for benefits to your health, hair and skin. 3. Drink fresh juices like carrot, beetroot and apple, they are nourishing. 4. Avoid processed foods like ready meals, snacks and biscuits, instead eat food in its natural state. Cook by steaming, lightly boiling or poaching. 5. Choose organic food to minimise your intake of pesticides. 6. Eat at least five portions of fruit and vegetables per day. 7. Avoid dairy and replace milk with soya or nut milks. Lentils, beans, seeds and nuts are good protein alternatives 8. You can support the detox process by getting a good night’s sleep and exercising regularly.

New flooring can make a big impact IF you’re looking to update the look and feel of your home this summer, the floor is one area where simple changes can have a big impact. But with so many options to choose from it can be very tricky to decipher the benefits of a particular type of flooring. Laminate is the ultimate cost-effective option for installing flooring on a budget. Suitable for all rooms in the home apart from bathrooms, it is versatile, practical and easy to install. Laminate floor does not fade, so even in sunlit areas, it will retain its original features. Engineered wood flooring benefits from the natural beauty of real wood, combined with the hard-wearing durability of a multi-layered construction. But for the premium finish, solid wood flooring provides unbeatable aesthetic appeal, while providing robust performance in high traffic areas, such as hallways and living

rooms. If you want a finish on your floor, a UV lacquered finish is applied during production, so fitting is made simpler and quicker. The finish can be satin or matt and it offers a hardwearing layer that will protect your floor and allow you to mop it clean. However if it is in an area where it’s likely to get scratched or gouged then this might not be the right finish for you. Natural oil is machine applied in factory and a second coat is applied once installed, meaning the installation can take longer and be more costly. Day to day maintenance can be challenging, with special soap and regular re-oiling required. UV oil is another factory finish option providing a good level of protection. Day to day maintenance remains simple and crucially the floor can be spot repaired and re-oiled in the event of a significant scratch.

Summer Days

How to keep your garden in tip-top condition during summer months JULY is the month of high summer and the garden comes alive during hot lazy afternoons to the sound of bees buzzing and the sight of fluttering butterflies, gathering pollen from all the plants that are now in full flower and act like fuelling stations around your garden for pollinating insects. Butterflies, moths and bees feed on plant nectar which is why the best flowers for attracting them are often described as nectar plants. One of the most popular is the Buddleja, also known as the butterfly bush, a hardy and reliable shrub whose flowers act like magnets for butterflies. Several dwarf and compact varieties of butterfly bush are now available that are perfect for pots or tiny spaces, with flowers in colours from pink and white to blue, lavender, magenta and deep purple. In fact pots are a great

way to make patios a riot of colour during the summer months — which can be extended through to the winter and spring with bulbs and bedding plants. Just remember, the more containers you have, the more watering you will have to do during hot periods and the more dead heading and trimming you will need to do – but it’s definitely worth it. In fact watering is top of the ‘to do’ list this month — as the experts agree. This is often one of the hottest months of the year and a great time to sit out and enjoy your garden. Keep plants looking good by regularly deadheading, and you’ll enjoy a longer display of blooms. Make sure you keep new plants well watered, using recycled water where possible, and hoe off weeds, which thrive in the sunshine. Keep plants looking lush and flowering for longer

with regular feeding and watering. You’ll get more flowers in borders, containers and hanging baskets by adding a liquid feed once a week to the watering regime and that also applies to vegetable crops to ensure the best growth. Mow the lawn at least once a week in July and trim the edges after cutting for a neat finish — and give it a summer feed. Deadheading flowering plants is important to keep your displays looking fresh plus it prolongs the flowering period. Pinch off the flower head with your finger and thumb or use a pair of scissors or secateurs. Make sure you take the seed pod away too because the plant will then use its energy to form new buds rather than developing the seeds Now is the best time to cut and tie stems of herbs to dry them for use in the winter.

A range of herbs including oregano, marjoram, thyme, lavender and summer savoury are growing really well now, so perfect for harvesting. Cut stems in the morning on a dry day, tie them into small bundles of individual herbs and hang them up in a cool, dry room. When well dried, the leaves should be transferred to tightly closing tins or screw top jars. If you grow your own then ensure that all vegetables get a regular supply of water, beans in particular to help the seed pods set. Climbing beans may need topping off to ensure good cropping on side shoots and check that other climbing veg is tied securely to supports. Protect heavily-laden fruit trees and bush branches against snapping under the weight by using a stake or prop to keep them upright.

If necessary, prune cherries straight after they have harvested. You can sow spring cabbage, chicory, fennel and winter salads now. Weed in dry weather, if you do it when it’s wet weeds can re-root, and make sure you keep an eye out for aphids, potato and tomato blight.
