Gardening challenge

Record number of people through museum doors By Laura Rowley A RECORD 19,730 pupils visited the National Coal Mining Museum for England in 2015. The museum is dedicated to preserving the history of coal mining and the learning programme involves a range of cross-curricular workshops and immersive experiences for pupils

at primary and secondary level. Pupils who visit the museum have the opportunity to learn about their local history, investigate Britain’s industrial past, see science in action and develop their creativity in a unique learning environment. Jayne Ambrose, education officer said: “We are absolutely thrilled with the number of

pupils we’ve welcomed to the museum this past year. The museum is a fantastic immersive environment and the perfect place to spark pupils’ imaginations and inspire learning across the curriculum. “We aim to provide an exciting and unforgettable learning experience and are really proud of what we have achieved this

year. However, the work does not stop here as we continue to strive to improve the learning programme and find new partners to work with to enthuse even more young people to learn about coal mining heritage.” For information about the Museum’s Education Programme visit

Top tips for protecting your skin from the sun SUN awareness week takes place May 9 to 15 and what better way to celebrate it than by looking after your skin. Here are some top tips from the British Association of Dermatologists on staying safe in the sun: ■ Protect your skin with clothing — don’t forget to wear a hat that protects your face, neck and ears. ■ Spend time in the shade between 11am and 3pm when it’s sunny. ■ When choosing a sunscreen look for a high protection SPF (SPF 30 or more to protect against harmful UVA).

■ Apply plenty of sunscreen 15 to 30 minutes before going out in the sun and reapply every two hours. ■ Be sure to reapply sunscreen after swimming and towel-drying. ■ Keep babies and young children out of direct sunlight. Don’t be one of these devastating facts: ■ Seven people die from skin cancer every day in the UK. ■ More than 100,000 new cases of all skin cancer diagnosed in the UK each year. ■ Rates of malignant melanoma are rising faster than any other type of common cancer. ■ On average, someone who dies from skin cancer typically loses 20

years of their life. ■ At least two 15 to 34-year-olds are being diagnosed with malignant melanoma every day in the UK. A guide to checking your skin by Dr Bav Shergill, consultant dermatologist and British Skin Foundation trustee, said: “Most skin cancers can be cured if detected early. The best way to detect skin cancer is to check your skin regularly, about once a month. “You should examine the skin all over your body, from top to toe. Ask a friend or member of your family to look at areas you can’t see such as your scalp, ears and

back. “Look out for moles or patches of skin that are growing, changing shape, developing new colours, inflamed, bleeding, crusting, red around the edges, particularly itchy, or behaving unusually. “Remember, if in doubt, get it checked out straight away. We recommend that you tell your doctor about any changes to a mole or patch of skin. “If your GP is concerned about your skin, make sure you see a consultant dermatologist — an expert in diagnosing skin cancer. Your doctor can refer you for free through the NHS.”

Helping older people adapt their driving By Laura Rowley A WEBSITE aimed at helping older people adapt to changes in their driving to stay safe on the road has been launched by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA). The site — — has been set up by the safety charity, with funding from the Department for Transport, to provide advice and information for older drivers in a bid to help them to drive safely for longer. The website gives tips on how people can update their driving skills and knowledge to maintain their freedom and independence on the road, as well as advice for families or friends who are concerned about a loved one’s driving. It will help drivers to: ■ Recognise whether, and how, their driving is changing;

■ Find out what they can do to cope with these changes, such as changing when and where they drive, adapting their car or taking driver assessment or training; ■ Find local driving assessment or refresher training; ■ Understand the law about health conditions and driving and how to renew their driving licence; ■ Plan for the need to change when and where they drive, and if it becomes necessary, to retire from driving. Kevin Clinton, RoSPA’s head of road safety, said: “The older we are, the more experience we have as drivers. “This is one of the reasons why older drivers tend to be safer and more considerate drivers. “However, our health and fitness often begins to decline as we grow older. “Our eyesight, physical condition

Heritage centre will play host to club rally By Katia Harston ELSECAR Heritage Centre will provide the backdrop for the Barnsley Morris Minor owners’ club rally. More than 100 classic motors are expected to line up for the annual gathering, which meets at the historic site on Sunday, May 22. Club member and vintage car enthusiast Graham Wall said it promises be a good day, running from 10am-4pm, with refreshments and a cake stall A tribute band event at Building 21, also at the centre, takes place that weekend with more than 50 different tribute bands taking to the stage.

and reaction times may not be as good as they once were, and we may develop age-related conditions, or be taking medications that can affect our driving. “Many older drivers recognise that their driving ability is changing and alter when and where they drive to compensate — but not all drivers do this. “There comes a time when each of us needs to reduce our driving, or even stop altogether. “Of course, this is different for each person — there isn’t an age at which we automatically become unsafe to drive. “The aim of the website is to help older people to continue to drive for as long as they are safe to do so, and to provide advice on making the decision to retire from driving if they are no longer able to drive safely.”

Keep children away from water GRANDPARENTS, aunts and uncles, and friends of families with children under the age of six are being encouraged to consider fencing off, covering or filling in their garden ponds to help prevent childhood drowning. As much of the country basks in its first period of warm weather this year, family safety charity RoSPA hopes that those who have young children visiting their gardens will think about taking steps to separate children from water. On average five children under the age of six die every year from drowning after falling into a garden pond, many after escaping supervision for just a few seconds. David Walker, leisure safety manager at RoSPA, said: “Children under six are most vulnerable to drowning in the home and garden as they are naturally inquisitive and drawn to water.”

Cleethorpes pier is voted Pier of the Year By Laura Rowley CLEETHORPES has been voted Pier Of The Year 2016 by the members of the National Piers Society. One of the shortest piers in the UK, Cleethorpes opened in August 1873, at a cost of £8,000 and was built to be 1200 feet long. More than 2850 people paid the enormous sum of 4d to walk along it on the first day, and over the next five weeks the number of visitors totalled 37,000, the majority coming by rail from the great industrial cities. They were not, sadly the refined type of folk envisaged by the town’s residents — a dance band was hired to play for them and

struction of a new stand at Leicester City Football Club’s ground. The pier at this time was now only 335ft long. Summer shows were staged inside the pavilions but from 1968 onwards it began to house bingo, wrestling and stamp fairs. In the 1970s it became known as the home of Northern Soul music. The pier changed hands eight times over the next 20 years, but despite considerable capital investment it gradually went downhill and acquired an unsavoury reputation. In 2013 it was saved by a private buyer, extensive restoration was carried out during the following two years and the pavilion

now boasts a Promenade Bar, Victorian Tea Room, fine dining restaurant and a function room capable of hosting conferences, weddings and shows. The National Piers Society’s President Gavin Henderson said: “The restoration of the pier at Cleethorpes, and its pavilion in particular, has won overwhelming support, and I congratulate those who have carried out this remarkable transformation.” Bryan Huxford, the man responsible for the transformation, said: “To be recognised in this way by the members of the National Piers Society, just eight months after reopening, is truly amazing.” Worthing pier came second, closely followed by Llandudno.

shocked locals complained of ‘an influx of the great unwashed, including young men dancing together and smoking pipes.’ In 1883 a barrel vaulted concert hall was erected at the pier head and the dancing moved inside, but it was destroyed by a fire in 1903. Two years later a pavilion was built on a side extension a little way down the pier and it is still there to this day. In 1936 the pier was sold to Cleethorpes Borough Council for £27,800 and at the outbreak of war it was cut in half. The seaward end was badly damaged during a storm in 1949, and the council demolished the pier’s neck and some of the salvaged materials were used for the con-

amazing and unforgettable.” Paul Smith, chief executive of Haybrook said: “The Barnsley team really is the best of the best. “It is therefore a pleasure to reward Barnsley for all of its hard work. “Every year, we reward our staff

with the trip of a lifetime, providing the perfect incentive for our employees to work as hard as they can all year round. They now have their sights set on next year’s adventures — trips to the USA and Austria, when we will once again provide an experience they will never forget.”

Encouraging residents to remember war memories BARNSLEY residents are being encouraged to enter personal recollections or stories of experiences of The Great War from forbears and relatives on a special website. The last surviving combatants of World War One have died, but family memories of them and their experiences live on. Now a University of Huddersfield webbased project means that those memories can be shared and preserved. The project is headed by Nigel King, who is the university’s professor in applied psychology. It has received financial backing from the British Psychological Society. A key aim is to add a psychological dimension to continuing centenary commemorations of the 1914-18 conflict. Visitors to the website, named Family

Memories of the First World War, will be able to enter personal recollections or stories that have been handed down about the experiences of forbears and relatives, male or female, either on active service or on the Home Front. The website will serve as an archive of WWI material that will be of widespread interest and value to historians and sociologists among others. Professor King said that a large amount of research has already been conducted into personal memory and into collective memory. “But this has usually been collective memory at a wide level, such as communities. “There has not been much research looking at the family as a focus of memory, as a unit of remembering,” he said.

Yorkshire Air Ambulance chairman is awarded an MBE by the Queen

Fear of being judged stops gym-goers THE fear of being judged is one of the biggest causes of ‘gym-phobia’ in Yorkshire according to new statistics. Most of us can come up with a plethora of excuses not to go to the gym or exercise, but a British Heart Foundation poll has revealed that, aside from membership costs, the main reason people in the Yorkshire region avoid going to the gym is feeling intimidated by other fitter, more competitive people. Second on the list was the fear of what other people would think of them when exercising, followed by not knowing or having the confidence to use the different exercise machines. People showing off at the gym was another turn off for people in Yorkshire, whilst a key barrier for many was not feeling fit enough to start going to the gym in the first place. Other gym pet peeves included regulars taking over at the gym, as well as people wearing lycra and grunting whilst exercising. But you don’t have to be a slave to the gym to be more active. The BHF is challenging the nation to

take on its new MyMarathon challenge to conquer 26.2 miles over the month of May and help fund life saving research. Runners can complete the challenge this May in a way that’s a challenge for them. Whether it’s at the park, during lunchbreaks or around the streets with friends by your side. Over a few days, a couple of weeks or the whole month — you decide the pace and you decide the place. Lucy Wilkinson, senior cardiac nurse at the British Heart Foundation, said: “Everyone should feel proud to exercise knowing they are helping to keep their hearts strong. “And now with the MyMarathon challenge you don’t have to be a slave to the gym. “You decide the pace and you decide the place, so it’s a great way to get active without feeling intimidated, and help us beat heart disease.” To find out more or to sign up for free to MyMarathon visit

THE Yorkshire Air Ambulance chairman has become an MBE in a ceremony by the Queen at Windsor Castle. Peter Sunderland was named in Her Majesty’s New Year Honours list for Voluntary service to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and the community in West Yorkshire. Mr Sunderland, 73, has been a trustee of the lifesaving charity for more than 12 years, with just over nine of those as its chairman, and has been responsible for some momentous changes at the YAA in recent years. He said: “It was a truly fantastic

and overwhelming day at Windsor Castle. Up until arriving, I had been given no clue as to who would be awarding my MBE, so to find out it was Her Majesty was just wonderful. “The ceremony itself was quite surreal but walking towards the Queen to collect my MBE will certainly go down as one of the most memorable and proudest moments of my life.” Mr Sunderland joined the YAA after retiring from his role at the RMC Group PLC, where he worked for more than 27 years. After spending an initial three

years as a trustee for the YAA, he became chairman in November 2006, and continues to hold the position today. Mr Sunderland added: “The YAA really is going from strength to strength however none of this would have been possible without the amazing support of the people of Yorkshire. Something we will always be eternally grateful for.” As well as his work with the YAA, Mr Sunderland has also been a member of the Wakefield Cathedral Council, and is a past President and Subscribers Secretary of Huddersfield Choral Society.

Quality designs, built to last

Why it can pay off to haggle for a bargain By Laura Rowley

When adding a conservatory to your home it is key you find a company you can trust before you part with any cash. Crest Conservatories has established an enviable reputation for its honest approach to delivering quality designs that are built to last. Visitors to the Stairfoot showroom can be assured of downto-earth advice and excellent service, in a large, airy environment, free from hard-sell tactics. Customers can browse seven fullsize designs in their own time, with help and guidance available when required.

Crest takes pride in charging an honest price for high-calibre workmanship. As director Steve Hallsworth explains, this level of quality is not expensive, it is priceless. "We don't inflate our prices just so we can knock money off and say you're getting a bargain, because that just isn't honest," says Steve, "The price you see on our quote is the price you pay." Each build is bespoke, with illustrative plans created to help bring your perfect space to life. Crest Conservatories will manage every aspect of your project from concept to completion, making for a worry free installation.

Conservatory roofs are made inhouse by Crest's sister company, G R Systems, to make sure they adhere to the firm's high standards. Modern, light, tiled roof systems are also available with Crest being a registered installer of both the Equinox and Supalite systems. As a member of the Consumer Protection Association (CPA), Crest offers a ten-year insurance-backed guarantee on all work it carries out. EMBARRASSMENT stops residents in Yorkshire from saving £277 by haggling. Fewer than three in ten consumers regularly challenge prices, and even they lack confidence in their ability and most are too shy to barter to secure the best deals, even though more than three quarters dislike paying the full amount for an item. Seventy three per cent who never or only occasionally haggle, have missed out on £277 in the past year alone. The survey of Yorkshire residents finds that while embarrassment is the biggest stumbling block to getting a cheaper price, more than a third of consumers do not ask because they are worried retailers will not respond well to them challenging the cost. Even those who do attempt wrangling a lower price are not confident in their ability, with 46 per cent believing they do not haggle effectively. Of those consumers who are brave enough to haggle, affordability is not the driving force as only three per cent are actually motivated because they cannot afford it. Instead more than half are driven by securing the lowest cost possible and just over a fifth are of the mind-set that if you don’t ask you don’t get. When it comes to where and what residents in the Yorkshire area are haggling for, unsurprisingly, nearly six

in ten find it easier on holiday. While 76 per cent of hagglers look to agree a bargain for big ticket items (for example a car), 54 per cent said it is when an item is damaged. Similarly, the majority of smooth-talking money-savers employ their skills when renewing existing contracts for mobile phones, broadband and TV packages, or insurance policies. The hagglers’ guide to getting money off — research shows that the most popular tactics to negotiating a saving are: 1. Asking for things to be thrown in free (75 per cent) 2. Researching retailers beforehand so you know what deals they have to offer (62 per cent) 3. Never taking the first offer (60 per cent) 4. Offering a lower price than you think it is worth in the hope the retailer will meet you in the middle (57 per cent) 5. Building up a rapport (39 per cent) 6. Offering to pay in cash (32 per cent) 7. Pretending to be disinterested at first (25 per cent) 8. Picking quieter times to shop (22 per cent) 9. Offering to buy in bulk (seven per cent) 10. Using the good cop, bad cop routine (four per cent)

SAVE UP: Annual holidays are important to Yorkshire folk. to scrimp and save for their holidays, it takes an average of six months to save up for an annual holiday abroad. Almost half of savvy holidaymakers in Yorkshire are organised enough to have a holiday account which they save money towards each month, with £130 emerging as the average amount put aside every month for holidays and breaks. The majority of savers,

86 per cent, use this money for family holidays, and 29 per cent use their savings for trips away with friends. A further 33 per cent of passionate adults in Yorkshire use holiday savings for regular romantic trips away with their other half. Vix Leyton from Quidco, who commissioned the survey, said: “It’s no surprise that overstressed Brits are dreaming of

Saving more lives from cancer PEOPLE across Barnsley who have been diagnosed with or affected by cancer are being asked to share their stories with Yorkshire Cancer Research. As part of it’s ‘My Story’ campaign, the organisation is searching for 20 people willing to share their experience of diagnosis, treatment, and the impact on their lives and those of their families and friends. The storytellers are intended as a representative snapshot of the wide demographic of those affected by cancer, irrespective of age, race, religion or social standing. Charles Rowett, chief executive of Yorkshire Cancer Research, said: “Sadly, people in Yorkshire are more likely to get cancer and more likely to die of it than

people living in almost any other region. More investment is needed to tackle the specific problems within the region to deliver better outcomes for patients and reduce the devastating impact that cancer has on the lives of people living in and around the county. “We are planning to raise more than £100 million over the next 10 years to ensure that by 2025, at least 2,000 more people in Yorkshire will survive cancer every year. Letting people with the disease or their families, friends and colleagues tell their stories of how it has impacted their lives, is an important part of creating public understanding of our aim to save more lives in Yorkshire.” Contact 01423 877210 or by e-mail

A NEW study into the nation’s travel habits has revealed the extent to which we live for holidays, with adults in Yorkshire spending an average of £276,458 on holidays in their life time. The research revealed that Yorkshire people are now enjoying three UK holidays or mini breaks each year costing on average £795 each, and at least one foreign holiday which sets them back on average £2,074. This showed the importance placed on annual holidays, with 88 per cent claiming holidays are ‘the highlight of the year’ and a further 54 per cent going so far as to say ‘life would not be worth living without holidays’. But, for some, being able to afford regular holidays is a struggle as 38 per cent of those in Yorkshire admitted to getting into debt in order to pay for holidays. Those who had got into debt claimed the most they have borrowed for a single holiday is £1,249 on average and 12 months was revealed as the average time it takes the people of Yorkshire to pay off the debt. Our standard terms and conditions of Advertising and Payment are set out below and are applicable to all advertising booked in any of the Company’s newspapers, other publications and internet sites or with regard to any other business transacted. General In these terms and conditions (i) the ‘Company’ means The Barnsley Chronicle Limited of 47 Church Street, Barnsley, S70 2AS; and (ii) the ‘Advertiser’ means any person or company placing with the Company an order for the publication of an advertisement in any of the Company’s newspapers, other publications or internet sites, or any person or company placing with the Company an order for the distribution or insertion of leaflets or other publications or materials with any of the Company’s newspapers or other publications. Acceptance of Conditions In placing an order for the publication of an advertisement, the Advertiser accepts these terms and conditions. No term or condition that conflicts with them is binding on the Company or the Advertiser unless it is in writing and signed by or on behalf of both parties by an authorised signatory. These terms and conditions shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of England and Wales. If any provision in these terms and conditions is held to be invalid or unenforceable in whole or in part the remainder of them shall continue to apply. The Company reserves the right at any time to change in whole or in part these terms and conditions. CONDITIONS OF ACCEPTANCE OF ADVERTISEMENTS 1 Advertiser’s Warranty and Indemnity (i) The Advertiser warrants: (a) that the advertisement is legal, decent, honest and truthful and that it complies with the British Codes of Advertising and Sales Promotion, with any relevant codes of practice and with all requirements of current legislation; (b) that nothing in the advertisement is defamatory or constitutes a malicious falsehood; (c) that the publication of the advertisement will not infringe copyright or any other rights vested in a third party; and (d) that the Advertiser has secured all necessary authorities and consents in respect of the use in the advertisement of any pictorial representations or other representations of (or purporting to be of) living persons and of references to any words attributed to living persons. (ii) The Advertiser will indemnify the Company in respect of all costs, damages or other charges arising as a result of the publication of their advertisement or incurred in connection with any actions or claims brought against the Company arising from a breach by the Advertiser of the warranties in this paragraph 1 or otherwise from the publication of the advertisement. 2 Refusing or Amending Advertisements (i) The Company reserves the right to refuse to publish any advertisement whether or not the advertisement has been accepted or previously published. (ii) The Company may require any alteration it considers necessary or desirable in an advertisement as a prior condition of its publication, whether or not such advertisement has been accepted or previously published. (iii) The Company will permit only standard abbreviations and no hyperlinks or metatags may be included in any advertisements save with the prior consent of the Company. 3 Placement of Adverts (i) Whilst the Company will endeavour to comply with reasonable requests from Advertisers, the Company does not guarantee the publication of any advertisement or its publication on any particular date or in any particular position. (ii) The Company has at its absolute discretion the right to decide the classification, if relevant, for any advertisement. 4 Cancellation (i) The Company may cancel the Advertiser’s order at any time and shall give notice of the cancellation before the next due date of publication of the advertisement if practicable. (ii) In no event can orders be cancelled once the Company has commenced to carry out the order in accordance with the first publication date requested by the Advertiser. In other cases notice of cancellation must be received by the Company prior to the relevant current deadline. (iii) All cancellations must be notified in writing by post or fax. E-mail notice of cancellation is not acceptable. 5 Copyright (i) Copyright of all artwork, copy or other material created, reworked or contributed to by the Company shall vest in the Company. (ii) The Advertiser authorises the Company to record, reproduce, publish, distribute and broadcast (or to permit the same) all advertisements (including but not limited to text, artwork and photographs) and to include and make them available in any information service, electronic or otherwise. 6 Advertiser’s Property All artwork, photographs, leaflets, film or other property delivered by the Advertiser to the Company is held by the Company at the Advertiser’s risk and the Advertiser should insure all such property against loss or damage from whatsoever cause. The Company reserves the right to destroy without notice all such material after the date of its last use in connection with the publication of an advertisement, unless the Advertiser has given written instructions to the contrary. 7 Box Numbers (i) The Company will endeavour to forward all replies to a box number, to the Advertiser, as soon as possible after receipt, but the Company accepts no liability in respect of any loss or damage alleged to have arisen through delay in forwarding or omitting to forward such replies, howsoever caused. Box addresses must not be used for sending goods or materials of any value. The Advertiser authorises the Company to examine material passing through boxes and hereby authorises the Company to return to its originator or destroy any communication, which, in the opinion of the Company, should not be delivered to the Advertiser. (ii) Advertisements from dealers are not accepted under a box number, nor may a box number be used for the distribution of trade canvassing material. 8 Disclosing Information (i) All advertisements must be accompanied by the Advertiser’s full name and address and the Company may require evidence of authenticity of any advertisement. All trade advertisements must contain a trading name. (ii) The Company reserves the right to refuse an advertisement containing only a mobile telephone number unless the Advertiser discloses to them a BT land line number (or similar). (iii) The Company reserves the right to disclose the name and address of Advertisers if required by law or any regulatory or government authority or to other third parties where the Company, in its sole discretion, deems it reasonable. 9 Limitation of Company’s Liability (i) The Advertiser shall check the advertisement and notify the Company immediately in writing of any errors. The Company assumes no responsibility and shall not be liable for the repetition of errors in a series of advertisements unless it has received reasonable

written notice from the Advertiser. (ii) In the event of any error, misprint or omission in the printing of an advertisement or part of an advertisement (however caused) the Company will either re-insert the advertisement or relevant part thereof, or make a reasonable refund or adjustment to the cost. No re-insertion, refund or adjustment will be made where the error, misprint or omission does not materially detract from the advertisement. (iii) In no circumstances shall the Company’s total liability (including consequential liability) in respect of any error, misprint or omission exceed either the amount of a full refund of any price paid to the Company for the advertisement in connection with which liability arose, or the cost of a further or corrective advertisement of a type and standard reasonably comparable to that in connection with which liability arose. (iv) Save as set out in this paragraph 9, the Company accepts no liability in respect of any loss or damage occasioned directly or indirectly as a result of the publication of any advertisement or any loss or damage occasioned directly or indirectly by any total or partial failure (however caused) of the publication of any advertisement in any of the Company’s newspapers, other publications or internet sites in which the advertisement is scheduled to appear. 10 Assignment (i) The Company shall be entitled to assign its contract with the Advertiser or any of its rights or benefits thereunder. (ii) The Advertiser may not assign, transfer, sub contract, charge or in any other way deal with any of its rights or obligations under this Agreement without the Company’s prior written consent. 11 Data Protection Act (i) The Company will hold information it obtains in its dealings with customers to administer the Advertiser’s account, for statistical purposes, for debt collection and for fraud and crime prevention. If the Advertiser does not wish its information to be used for marketing purposes, it should inform the Company in writing. (ii) Telephone calls to the Company may be monitored or recorded for staff training purposes. 12 Advertising Agencies (i) An advertising agency, whether recognised or not, submitting an advertisement shall conform to the conditions laid down by the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising regarding observance of the provisions of the British Code of Advertising Practice and to the Standard Conditions for transactions of business between newspapers and advertising agencies as agreed between the Newspaper Society and the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising. (ii) The terms of the Recognition Agreement between the Newspaper Society or between the Newspaper Society and the Newspaper Proprietors Association and recognised advertising agencies are deemed to be incorporated in these conditions of acceptance for the publication and transmission of all advertisements accepted from a recognised agency. Without prejudice to the foregoing, these conditions of acceptance specifically extend to any personal guarantee given by the directors of or any other person on behalf of a recognised agency in respect of any unsatisfied liabilities of the agency in the event of the agency’s liquidation or insolvency. Such guarantee is part of these conditions of acceptance. 13 Leaflets For the purpose of these terms and conditions, any leaflet or other publication or material distributed with any of the Company’s newspapers or magazines is deemed to be an ‘advertisement’, and references to the publication of such advertisements is deemed to be the distribution or insertion of such leaflet or other publication or material. PAYMENT TERMS FOR ADVERTISERS Orders for the insertion of advertisements are accepted subject to the following payment terms: 1 Rates (i) The Company reserves the right at any time to change the scale of advertising rates and to apply such rates to advertisements (series or otherwise) accepted and not wholly executed at the time of any such change. (ii) It is the responsibility of the Advertiser to bring to the Company’s attention at the time of booking any discount, allowance or exemption from Value Added Tax to which entitlement is claimed. (iii) All gross advertising rates (except classified lineage and semi display) are subject to the Advertising Standards Board of Finance levy from time to time (currently 0.1%) payable by the Advertiser to help finance the self-regulatory system. (iv) All rates and prices quoted by the Company are exclusive of Value Added Tax. 2 Advertising Agencies (i) Commission will only be granted to agencies formally recognised by the Newspaper Society or the Company at the time of placing the order. The rate of commission payable will be determined by the Company and may be carried or withdrawn at the Company’s discretion at any time, subject to giving the advertising agency seven days written notice thereof. (ii) All advertising agencies claiming commission must quote order numbers for every booking made. 3 Time of Payment (i) Unless credit terms have been agreed, pre-payment for any advertisement must be made in full no later than the relevant deadline. (ii) In the event that credit terms are approved, payment shall be made for each advertisement no later than thirty days from the date of the invoice for such advertisement. Should the Advertiser be in breach of these terms, or of any contract with the Company, then the full amount in respect of all advertising published and all other amounts accruing from the Advertiser shall become due and payable. (iii) The Company reserves the right to withdraw credit facilities from any Advertiser at the Company’s discretion. (iv) Payments by post must be by cheque or postal order made payable to the Company and crossed. All payments must be accompanied by the relevant invoice, statement or remittance advice issued by the Company. (v) Any query in respect of an invoice must be brought to the attention of the Company within seven days of its issue. The existence of a query on any individual item on an account shall not affect the due date of payment of any balance of such account. 4 Late Payments (i) The Company shall be entitled to charge interest on all sums due at a rate of 5% above the base rate for the time being of Barclays Bank plc until payment is received, after as well as before any judgment is obtained, together with compensation for late payment under the Late Payment of Commercial Debts (Interest) Act 1998 and regulations made thereunder. (ii) The Company shall be entitled to add to any sums due any reasonable costs and expenses (including administrative costs) incurred by the Company in obtaining payment thereof on an indemnity basis. (iii) The Company shall be entitled to charge the Advertiser £15.00 in respect of any cheque tendered which is not met upon presentation (and to vary this charge at any time without notice). (iv) The Company reserves the right to exercise a lien over any documents or other property of the Advertiser in its possession if the Company’s charges are not paid in accordance with these terms and the Company’s rate card from time to time.
