BUDDING rock stars can crank up the volume at a new music centre in Platts Common. Back to Black Studios opened its doors with three newly equipped practice rooms. The venture has been funded by local band The Gingerbread Mistresses and guitarist David Loy, says nearly £10,000 has been spent on the project. Each room has a drum kit, microphones and a PA and guitar and bass amps can be hired. David said there is nowhere else in the area offering practice rooms and it was important to encourage young people to become interested. “There’s lots of things we can offer

David said the centre in Wombwell Road also has a stage area for bands to showcase their material. The studio was named after Amy Winehouse’s hit “Back to Black’, as lead singer of The Gingerbread Mistresses Julie Hodgson is a huge fan – even dressing up as the famous songstress for gigs. Bands have already come from as far as Sheffield to use the rooms and there are also plans for guitar and drum lessons for people to brush up their skills. A SALVATION Army officer who helped the Hoyland Common branch move from a tin hut to a new community hall has been awarded the British Empire Medal. Barbara Sabin is continuing the family trend after her father, Cyril Parkin, was awarded a BEM in 1945 for his service overseas in the army’s Royal Corps of Signals.
