Highgate youngsters scoop top awards AN awards evening was held to celebrate the end of the school term at Highgate Primary Academy. Pupils from the school were presented with awards for their efforts in three different fields. Children who had either learned a new skill, helped the community or had done a presentation on a project they researched got special recognition at the specially arranged ceremony. The ‘Highgate Difference Awards’ were handed out after 40 year six pupils had donated their time and effort over the past few months to the initiatives. Principal Jo Leishman praised the children’s efforts and commitments.

She said: “We could not be more proud of our children for what they have achieved over these past few months. “They have worked exceptionally hard to gain the Highgate Difference Award. “Each and every one of them has demonstrated independence, resilience, imagination, ‘work hard’ ethic, empathy for others and belief in themselves. “This is the first time the school has run the award scheme and these children have certainly set the tone for many years to come.” New skills learned included learning a new instrument, art work, first aid skills and some youngsters even had a go at balloon modelling.

AWARDS: Millie Hirst, Rhianna Greaves and Gabrielle Jarvis from Highgate Primary Academy with their awards at Highgate’s end of term ceremony. Inset: Harry Feeley, Kai Fisher and Harry Asquith.

PRO: Charley Dyson from Wombwell at Dexx Skate Park.

A BRAMPTON skatepark is the training ground for the world’s youngest professional scooter rider. Charley Dyson, eight, from Rectory Close, Wombwell, uses the ramps of Dexx Skate Park as his home turf as he hones his skills on two wheels. High-flier Charley turns pro scooter, and got his start in the sport aged just five. He taught himself how to perfect life on two wheels using YouTube videos and the help of fellow riders at the Derwent Way skate park. Last year, he was headhunted by scooter team GMB to join its roster, and competed in his first competition in Holland in March.

Mum Delise Hardy said: “There is a big show called Nitro Circus and that’s what Charley wants to go into – extreme sports. His monthly salary is not a lot, but it is more than enough for an eight-year-old. “He just has this amazing talent. He is doing tricks 16, 17 and 18year-olds can’t do.” Charley has got more than 51,000 followers on his Instagram

A GRASSROOTS community garden is starting to blossom in Wombwell. Wombwell Loxley Gardens, which is surrounded by Loxley Avenue, Bird Avenue, Washington Avenue and Rutland Place has filled its quota for flower bed adoption this year. Funded by Berneslai Homes and the Wombwell Community Alliance, with support from Barnsley Council, the garden has had a great response from local residents looking for a chance to get green-fingered. Sponsorship and volunteers were also provided by Tesco Stairfoot. A string of fun days in the garden in recent months has had a great response despite some bad weather,

with children’s games and crafting activities going down well alongside volunteering to create and fill the new flower beds. The Alliance’s Alan Taylor said: ‘We will continue to work to further the development of the garden and support the local residents and gardeners into 2017, and next year hope to double the take up of beds. “We hope to run a further community games event in the summer holidays and maybe prepare some further beds for use in 2017.” The scheme could even be expanded to another site. Alan added: “The success of this project has made us think about whether we should expand to open up a second garden in a different area of Wombwell.”

New memorial plaque dedicated in Wombwell A NEW memorial plaque in Wombwell Park aims to bring its heritage as a memorial to local men who died in the First World War to the forefront. Unveiled in a dedication ceremony conducted by Rector of Wombwell, Rev Jane Blatherwick, the plaque sits in pride of place on the park entrance from Wright Crescent. Wombwell Heritage Group and the Friends of Wombwell Park planned the plaque, and it was paid for with the help of the local High Street branch of Wombwell Co-operative Funeralcare.

COUNTY CHAMPION: West Melton teenager Georgie Botham.

Georgie shows he is best BY ASHLEY BALL YOUNG boxer Georgie Botham recently showed he was the best at his weight in Yorkshire. The 18-year-old from West Melton, trains out of Micky’s Athletic Boxing Club on Moor Road, in Wath-upon-Dearne. Since moving to the village, the club run by father and son team Mick Wale and Josh Wale, has helped get a number of youngsters off the street and into the disciplined sport. Whilst making them champions remains of secondary importance to helping them get on the straight and narrow, producing title winners helps breed more success. Georgie, whose dad Mark is an amateur coach at the gym, has followed in his elder

Rev Blatherwick said: “When we read or see films about the war it is easy to think these were just anonymous people. Those of us here who had grandparents or great grandparents who fought must never forget the sacrifice they made for us.” War veterans, school children and representatives from the Prince’s Trust all attended the ceremony, and two minutes’ silence was held. Second World War veteran George Boor said: “I think this is a wonderful thing. People cannot forget. “It was wonderful to see so many children there.”
