‘I think we’ve made a start to build on’
N my daily early morning walk down Snape Hill I can see the new secondary school for Wombwell and Darfield taking shape down Low Valley; it’s growing each day like a promise of better times to come. At the bottom of Snape Hill I stroll past the new-ish Valley Primary School, built on the site of my old seat of learning and still gleaming and shiny, and I start to think that we could be at the threshold of exciting times for education in the borough, with new schools springing up all over the place and a sense that in hard economic times education is more important than ever. Of course, what we all want is for our schools to be as good as the one our Prime Minister went to. The class sizes should be as small as his were, the playing fields should be as huge, the labs should be as well equipped. And we’re a little way towards that goal, but there’s a long way to go. We have to value education and we have to value the teachers who deliver it; we have to respect the buildings that education happens in, and we’ve all got a responsibility to make sure that education carries on outside the classroom. I remember my own schooldays, decades ago, first at the old Low Valley School in Darfield and then at Wath Grammar. Low Valley was wonderful, in the days of the great Sir Alec Clegg at the West Riding County Council; he said that all children were creative, all children could achieve and all children deserved the best. So, consequently we had string quartets coming to school, and abstract art and theatre groups and we felt valued and loved. Wath was a bit different; it was a Grammar School so we were selected. Not by the eleven-plus, but by a scheme of continuous assessment called The Thorne Scheme. That wasn’t as bad as the elevenplus, but it was still selection. Suddenly I was separated from a lot of my mates and put with a lot of people who were good at answering things. I got a good education at Wath, but surely everybody should get an education that good? Surely selection always leads to some people being labelled as failures from an early age? I realise that not everybody is academic, of course, but everybody can be good at something, and everybody should get a chance to shine. Then I went to North Staffordshire Polytechnic and did a degree called

I studied history, English, politics and sociology and, to be honest, I didn’t work hard enough. My brain isn’t as fast or as sharp or as deep as it would have been if I’d spent more time in the library and less time in my mate Dave Thorpe’s room spouting rubbish about the state of the world. Sorry. I also wore an army greatcoat and had long hair. Sorry again. Mind you, the big difference between now and then was that in those days at the start of every term I got a cheque from Barnsley Council. A grant, not a fortune, but enough to live on with a bit of help. And what that grant did was give me a bit of loyalty to the town, it made me want to stay round here once I graduated, if only for a few years; as it happens I’ve stayed here all my life and I won’t be moving far now, I reckon. These days we have the appalling student loan that, no matter what people say, will put off people from poorer backgrounds attending university. Still, it’s good that we’ve got a University Campus in Barnsley and my ambition is still to see them whup King’s College, Cambridge, 600-0 on University Challenge. When I went freelance in 1981 I found that there were lots of WEA and local authority adult education classes where I could teach creative writing; Lifelong learning has always been a big thing in these parts, born out of collectivism and struggle and a kind of stubborn auto didacticism that makes us want to know more. As adults we never stop learning, and hopefully our glittering new schools will become magnets for education across the community. So, as you’ll have guessed, I’m a fan of education, and I want the best for Barnsley. I want all children to achieve, all young people to do well, all adults to feel that they can carry on in education as long as they want to. This is much easier said than done, of course, but I think we’ve made a start here, a start that can be built on…

Headteacher? Best job in the world A DESIRE to make a difference to young people’s lives led John Gregson to enter the world of teaching at 37. John, 55, taught in primary school’s in Rotherham and Sheffield before moving to Holy Rood primary, Barnsley, as head, a role he describes as ‘the best job in the world’. “I look forward to coming to work everyday and I’m still hugely enthusiastic about it. It's important to have a good sense of humour when working with young children and not take things too seriously all of the time,” he says. During his career, he has seen many changes in education and in the ways in which children are taught, all of which he says have brought new
challenges for teachers. “The national curriculum had just come in when I started teaching which put a lot of pressure on teachers to cover a broad spectrum and reach many targets. The new curriculum will be introduced shortly which should focus on the basics a bit more. “Developments in IT have brought massive changes to lessons, making learning more fun and interesting with the use of interactive whiteboards and online learning resources, which are suitable for children of all abilities. “Changes in society itself have come to challenge teachers more in recent times. We now get a lot more children from broken homes who
need additional support beyond lessons. “There is also an increasing amount of children joining the school who do not have English as their first language. That said, diversity in the classroom is great for the children and who learn a lot from each other.” John says there is always pressure on a school to improve further, especially with Ofsted raising the bar, but he stresses that with the challenges come rewards. “Becoming a headteacher is not just an opportunity to improve a school but to help mould and shape an entire community. Seeing children happy is what's important, helping them to fulfil their potential, make the most of their talents and shine in
different ways. “It's hugely rewarding watching the children grow up. It's like having an extended family and they all make me proud.” John says teachers face uncertainty about the next budget and the Government’s proposals for schools to become academies. Despite the changes, one part of teaching will always remain the same for him: the values he instills in his pupils. “We want children to love coming to school and above all to be happy. To give them the very best start we teach them the importance of respect, love, patience, forgiveness, tolerance and an understanding of what is right and wrong.”

PEOPLE are the basis of a good education but a top quality building helps, says the principal of Barnsley College. Colin Booth opened the £45m Old Mill Lane campus to students on Monday in a red carpet ceremony. In a speech to students, he praised it as something to be proud of but stressed their own efforts and that of their tutors would be what counts. He said: “It’s been two and a half years since the bulldozers moved in to demolish the old building and, soon after that, there was some debate about whether we would have the money complete it. “But, out of the rubble and ashes of the old college, we have built a new building we can be proud of and I hope you are successful in your exams and go on to work or higher education. What will get you there is your own hard work, effort and the
support of our excellent teachers and staff." The project attracted national attention when Mr Booth took steps to ensure there was enough money available to build the structure, as there was a possibility the college would have nothing to show for its efforts but a heap of debris. He said: “I went to Westminster to see Gordon Brown about it and showed David Cameron around on a pile of rubble very close to where I'm standing now. As you can imagine, it’s a relief that we were able to secure the funding and be able to see the students come in for their first day. “They and the staff will always be the key to any educational establishment but having the best resources and a great learning environment helps inspire people towards achieving their goals.”

The horizon grows closer THE new headteacher tasked with running the merged Kingstone and Holgate schools means business. Nick Bowen was previously headteacher at a business and enterprise college in the Northeast. This week he took up a new job as principal designate of Horizon Community College, which doesn’t open until next September. Kingstone is a specialist performing arts school, and Holgate a specialist in sports and PE. Nick says the new school will continue to have these specialisms, but he wants to develop values of business and enterprise within the school.

be among the very best in the country, particularly in the areas of sports and performing arts. “It will also, however, boast science, technology, art and creative media facilities, along with flexible learning environments, which will be the envy of schools up and down the country." It will have more than
2,000 pupils and will be the biggest school in Barnsley, but Nick wants to organise it into five separate 'schools', one for each year group. A small group of staff will stay with that school all the way through the five years. “There will be a core group of teachers who will know those pupils inside out”, he said.
“The children might be going to the biggest school in Barnsley, one of the biggest in the country, but at the same time, they’ll be part of a school of about 400, which would be the smallest school in Barnsley. “I would really like that culture, where the pupils are really well known in their own school.”

The importance of inspiring pupils 'The difference between someone ordinary and someone extraordinary is that little extra.' This is the philosophy that Joe Wilkinson has passed on to his pupils during his 44 years in the classroom. Teaching for him is not just about making the grade but inspiring children to do the best they can to achieve their goals. Joe, 65, has looked to many role models including his older brother Albert, the sole person responsible for sparking his passion for teaching. “Albert was good at lots of things and I hero-worshipped him, so when he became a teacher and enthused about it being a great career I knew I would follow that path too. “He told me it was a different life, a fantastic job and said every day was different. I have to agree, I have enjoyed it immensely. “I often talk to my pupils about inspirational people such as Muhammad Ali, Mother Teresa, Roy Castle and various marathon runners. I also use such examples when recruiting staff. “As a teacher you need the care and comfort of Mother Teresa, the multi-talents of Roy Castle, the stamina of a marathon runner and the determination of Muhammad Ali.” After studying at college in London, Joe returned to Barnsley to start his career. In 1970 he was promoted to Carlton Primary before becoming deputy at Grove Street primary in 1972. He was acting head there in 1975 until he got his own headship at Jump Primary in 1977, a role he has retired from in July after 34 years. Joe has seen many changes in

‘I don’t feel education is left alone long enough to embed before it moves on again’ education, perhaps a few too many. “Education goes full circle, it’s changing all the time as the government try different methods. “At one point we focused on the 11plus then the national curriculum came in but it was too much to cover so it had to be slimmed down. I don’t feel education is left alone long enough to embed before it moves on again.” Reflecting on his career, he says he has enjoyed the successes of pupils more than anything but also the development of his staff. “About 16 staff members I have recruited have left Jump to be deputies and heads at other schools which makes me proud. Recruiting is something I’m good at, selecting the right people, nurturing them and helping them develop.” “I love seeing people progress so I continued doing some form of teaching in the classroom every day while running the school." In retirement, Joe will keep a hand in education through consultancy, helping other heads to manage schools successfully by looking at performance, staff and pupils. “It's all about enthusing children, getting them up for a challenge and encouraging them to celebrate not just their own achievements but other people's achievements too.”

Rhythms of college life BARNSLEY students are aiming high despite the tough economic climate, says Peter Birkby, head of University Campus, Barnsley. He continues to welcome a healthy flow of new students into further education. But there has been a new trend since the financial downturn. Last year only 20 per cent of new students at UCB were from the Barnsley area, this year it has rocketed to 60 per cent. Musician Peter, 53, says: “Last year the majority were from the rest of the country as undergraduates want to move away and get a new experience, which is understandable.
“I think the big difference this year is because of the financial worries. It’s been an interesting shift and a big change but it makes sense for people financially. Just because there’s uncertainty on the financial side they’re not giving up on further education altogether.” UCB welcomes students for courses from art and design to construction. The most popular include digital film and visual effects production and music production and sound recording, which highlights the creativity of Barnsley students. And Peter says there are many advantages of doing such professional courses on
a smaller scale. He says: “The courses are small but the way they're organised is the same as in a larger institution. “I suppose the part that's different is it’s a far more intimate atmosphere. If you have a problem you can find someone to talk to about it quite easily, whereas you may struggle to do that in big places sometimes.” Each course has a handson element or work experience placement, which
further equips Barnsley students with practical skills for the working world. A scheme called the Business Mine, a campus business development facility provides a professional and dynamic environment for researching and testing business ideas. Several graduates have made use of this and gone on to set up their own businesses in areas like musical education for nursery children and
photography. Despite the new £7,950 annual fee for UCB students, Peter says the average Barnsley graduate earns £25,000 per year and the loan is paid back in extremely small chunks. He says: “It is worth it. My role is to make sure the students are going to have the best experience they can with the best equipment and best staff. I make sure everything is in place for them to have a great time.”

Barnsley College Welcomes New Students in Style Barnsley College this week opened the doors to its new campus at the top of Old Mill Lane. After seven years of planning and two years of building, the landmark building includes state of the art facilities to match the College’s high aspirations for students. Young people crossing the threshold for the first time were given a VIP reception, with a Hollywood style red carpet laid out to welcome the building’s first arrivals. The £50m, nine-storey building incorporates an impressive atrium providing specially designed study and social spaces, and dedicated personalised learning zones that form the heart of the campus. It was the first day of term for over 6,000 students, who were given a taste of the College’s creative talent as College band, The Bam Shoots, performed live outside the building. As a specialist school for sport, Shafton ALC will also place a strong emphasis on student leadership and health. Initially, Shafton ALC will operate as a split-site
organisation, with one site in Grimethorpe and one in Lundwood. In January 2012, we will transfer to state-of-the-art premises on Engine Lane, Shafton: construction may be viewed at www.barnsley.lep.co.uk. Our new premises will provide students with a 21st Century learning environment to enable new forms of learning and teaching which will impact positively on standards of attainment and rates of progress. Our hope is that Shafton ALC will become a learning environment for the whole community to enjoy. Our new ALC will contain outstanding sports facilities including a synthetic turf pitch,
football/rugby pitches, multi-use games area, dance suite, fitness suite, athletics track, cricket pitch and activity hall including climbing wall. HUNDREDS of Barnsley youngsters who moved up to secondary school this week may not appreciate how lucky they are. They will be the first children to get the benefit of five full years in some of the best new schools in the country. It is hoped that given the best environment to work in, and the best facilities to work with, they will achieve the best they can. But results are already improving, as the buildings begin to open. Last week Barnsley 16-year-olds scored their best ever GCSE results, only months after the first five of the nine new schools opened. The other four are due to open in the coming months. “It's the children starting school now that are going to feel the full benefit”, says Coun Steve Houghton, leader of Barnsley Council. “I think it's going to have a real impact on results. We've seen it in other schools elsewhere. These buildings have a real impact on the pupils' willingness to learn.” Last week 44 per cent of pupils gained five good GCSEs including English and maths. This puts Barnsley just behind the national average. Coun Houghton says: “It doesn't sound like much of an aspiration to want to be ‘at national average’, but considering where we were a few years ago, that’s a huge leap forward. “But we want to be better than national average. And we will be. We're going to refocus on English and maths. We managed 73 per cent

But they make for a good excuse for a fresh start for Barnsley youngsters. It is the idea of ‘new horizons’ which led to the choice of the new name for the merger of Kingstone and Holgate schools. It will be called ‘Horizon Community College'.
State-of-the-art ALC for all to enjoy The Dearne Advanced Learning Centre (ALC) opened its doors to pupils in January 2011. ‘Aspiration, Ambition and Achievement’ are its watchwords and the school aims to develop new ways of learning and teaching that respond to the needs of individual students. Personalised learning is enhanced with self-study areas, small group work areas and a state-of-the-art learning resource area. The building has been designed to meet the needs of its community. Full service provision for students and their families and additional learning support has been located within the Oasis
Zone. Adult learning and community use facilities also encourage local people to make use of the new building.

Dearne ALC provides a vibrant and professional environment for people to learn, with the very best facilities for post-16 learners, including those on the new Diplomas or adult learning courses. The ALC contains a lecture theatre, drama and dance studio, Learning Resource Centre and a central ‘market place’ with café, study areas and internet access. The aim is to provide the community with a social hub – to unite the neighbourhood and evoke a sense of local pride. The ALC is extending its opening times, allowing for the centre to be open from 7am up until 10pm, 5 days a week, with additional opening at weekends, for up to 48 weeks per year.
Hire this great space to train a football team or play with friends. Floodlights enable use of this facility until 10pm. We will also be organising a league in the new academic year so you may be able to claim your team is the best in the Dearne area.
Outdoor Football and Rugby pitches Rugby and football pitches can be hired for every week, or alternative weeks for the full season. Alternatively, you may want to host a single match or a tournament for a day. All of these possibilities can be accommodated. We also have outstanding changing facilities should they be required.
Lecture Theatre/Main Hall This is a fantastic space to hire. This area can be booked together or separately. The Lecture Theatre which can house up to 240 people is also ideal for conferences and training. Lifelong Learning – it’s ‘M.A.D.’ Training courses, apprenticeship schemes and redundancy support all have a place at Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber’s training division – Chamber Skills Solutions. With GCSE and A level results recently published, some students won’t be taking the option of continuing education whether by accident (poor or less than expected grades) or design (wanting to start in employment straight away). So, for those who choose the employment option, what’s on offer for them in Barnsley or, for that matter, throughout the country? And when they do enter the world of work, will that be the end of their learning and, if not, when will they be qualified and able to say that their learning experience has ended?
At individual level, learning never stops, whether you’re a school leaver with basic or non-existent qualifications or a graduate with a first-class degree, learning NEVER stops. Even at company level, smart companies large and small have to learn all the time if they wish to stay in business and, of course, it’s not really the company that learns but the people within the company. So why do you have to be M.A.D. to undertake learning? The answer lies in the full stops and M.A.D. stands for something – it’s about why people choose or are forced to continue in learning. I see three reasons for this:1. Mandatory training – certain occupations require specific qualifications that are often renewable after a set period or require to be maintained by way of Continuous Professional Development (CPD). This learning operates at all levels from professional drivers including, even, fork lift trucks, to solicitors and doctors. At a day-to-day level, most companies need to have qualified first aiders on the premises if they are to satisfy the legal requirements to ensure the health and safety of their staff and, sometimes, customers. 2. Advisory training – companies and individuals who want to keep up with the game might wish to keep abreast of latest developments. Changes to the law, particularly in the area of employment and health and safety law often need to be understood before a problem arises. In this regard, prevention is certainly better than cure and those with management responsibilities might want to make themselves aware of changing legal frameworks so as cascade this knowledge across the organisation. Training interventions such as ‘team building’ or team leader training also fit into this category as ways that companies and individuals can hope to not only achieve best practice, but also to get groups of people working towards common aims. 3. Developmental training – personal and professional development is vital for people and companies who want to get ahead and keep ahead. Sometimes this is about developing in the same area - enhancing skills to a higher

level, for example. Other reasons might include a change of direction either for the organisation (diversifying into a new area) or the individual going into a new job role or wanting or needing to start a new career (facing a dead end or perhaps facing up to the consequences of redundancy).
