Just south is Robin Hood’s Bay, home to a lively smuggling trade in the 18th century. Criss-crossed with cobbled alleyways, this quaint village is awash with atmosphere. Scarborough is Britain’s first seaside resort and is still as popular as ever, with its bustling seafront and golden sands. It attractions include the award-winning Sea Life Marine Sanctuary and the newly refurbished Rotunda Museum. It also hosts numerous festivals around the year, including Seafest, Scarborough Fayre and the Scarborough Cricket Festival. Just below Scarborough is Filey, an Edwardian seaside town with a friendly atmosphere, which is celebrating this week after its well-kept beach donkeys were named the best group in England and Wales for 2008. Filey’s five-mile stretch of sandy beach is protected by Filey Brigg, where all generations of families can enjoy exploring the many rock pools in search of sea creatures. South of Filey, Flamborough Head is designated a Heritage Coast for its spectacular landscape of chalk cliffs and rugged rock formations. A visit to its famous lighthouse is an educational adventure for youngsters. Bustling Bridlington boasts two awardwinning beaches of golden sands, promenades packed with fun, a picturesque harbour and a town full of attractions. For a quieter day at the beach, head for Skipsea, a narrow stretch of sand in a more rural location. Hornsea has an attractive promenade overlooking golden sands. It also sits on

the shore of Yorkshire’s largest freshwater lake, Hornsea Mere, and is home to the famous Wilbur’s Market, one of the friendliest in Yorkshire. In 2007, Cleethorpes was awarded the prestigious Quality Coast Award for its high-quality beaches and resort facilities. Attractions include the Playtowers, Cleethorpes Discovery Centre, Pleasure Island and Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway. Skegness to Mablethorpe is known as the Fun Coast, with beautiful, awardwinning sandy beach stretching for miles, and a vast range of attractions. The illuminations begin in July and continue well into November, lighting up the whole resort, and every August it’s carnival time. For a unique celebration of British seaside heritage why not visit the Festival of Bathing Beauties, the UK’s only beach hut festival? This is being held over the weekend of September 20 and 21, when the beach and the beach huts of Mablethorpe and Sutton on Sea will be filled with artistic attractions, including a giant deckchair, alternative fortune teller Madame Bentley, strongman Red Sarah, the only man alive who can lift a ton with his posterior, and comedy trio Dodgy Totty, who last year appeared as Ladies of the Waves, the world’s only dry-land synchronised swimming team. Artist Linda King will create a full-scale labyrinth on the beach using natural materials and found objects, and on Saturday night, the maze will be candlelit and open to explore.
