A glimpse ahead...

Looking ahead to events this Summer 2010...

A number of exciting features of the new Experience Barnsley galleries at the Town Hall have already been revealed:

Looking Ahead to Summer 2010 - Heart of Barnsley Festival and Summer Carnival. The Summer Carnival will take place on 10 July this year, with the annual Carnival Parade once again transforming the town centre, this year the parade will be awash with red hearts promoting a healthier lifestyle and acting as a warm up to the Heart of Barnsley Festival celebration, happening at Locke Park later on the same day. The Heart of Barnsley Festival is a truly spectacular programme of workshops and events that will culminate in the Heart of Barnsley Finale on the evening of the Summer Carnival. Central to the Heart of Barnsley programme will be the creation of a 30ft sculpture ‘Bye Bye Burger Boy’ that will be the focal point of an evening of fire, performance and stunning pyrotechnics. Working with NHS Barnsley to promote active lifestyles and healthier hearts, Newcastle based company Dodgy Clutch will work alongside a team of local artists to devise and create a finale event that promises to be a breathtaking community celebration on a scale unseen in Barnsley before. Look out for public workshops in May and June for your chance to make your own Red Hearts and be part of both the Carnival Parade and the evening’s celebrations, helping to light up the sky. 10 July 2010 promises to be a day not to be missed in Barnsley. For a Carnival Parade registration form please email katieperry@barnsley.gov.uk or call 01226 787771

• Step back in time at the ‘One Barnsley Address’ – a virtual house that travels through time: Barnsley characters through the years look forward to meeting you. • Talking gargoyles, grand viaducts and more create ‘The Barnsley Wall’, over sixty foot long and bridging over 1000 years of stories and inspirations. • ‘When Saturday Comes’ is a reminder of the good times, the spectacular and memorable experiences of each weekend – on the pitch, stage and much more! • ‘The End of an Era’ is a chance to reflect on the changes of recent years, what’s different now, what the borough’s been through and what it’s meant. • ‘Voice’ is a celebration of Barnsley dialect and a reminder of how powerful the spoken word can be. What will you tell? • ‘Faces of Barnsley’ isn’t just about the famous or worthy. It’s about Barnsley people, what they’ve done and what they’ve achieved. Who do you think should be included?

Seeds of Change

• ‘Ancient Times’ explores Barnsley hundreds and thousands of years ago, thanks to fantastic archaeological collections we’re bringing back to Barnsley from other museums in the region.

Imagine if you had the chance to work as a curator exploring the collections and objects held in our museums. Imagine if you had the chance to come up with new ways of representing this material and create new work for the museums. Imagine working with professional artists and digital technology. Seeds of Change is Barnsley’s part of the Stories of the World Project, one of the major projects of London 2012’s Cultural Olympiad. From now until 2012, 14 regional partners involving over 50 museums, libraries and archives across the UK will make this happen. At the heart of the vision is an exploration of the stories of collections that have come from all over the world. We are looking for young people between the ages of 14 and 24 to take part in the first part of the project working with the artist Paul Slater from the digital media company c media productions.

Young people will explore the Moorcroft collection of pottery and the plant collections at Cannon Hall Museum, Park and Gardens to create new work for the museum. For more information and to get involved please contact Pam Sandals at Cannon Hall Museum on 01226 790270.

Barnsley Town Centre goes Continental again! Once again the aromas of the Continent will be evident through the town centre this spring – from exotic coffees, magnificent cheeses and gently steaming paella! Following the outstanding success of previous visits, the Continental market makes a very welcome return to Barnsley from Tuesday 20th to Sunday 25th April 2010. The Continental market will be open from 9am to 6pm, Thursday to Saturday and from 10am to 4.30pm on Sunday. The Continental Market is a welcome visitor to our town and compliments our own famous Barnsley Market, which has grown in reputation since Royal approval was given in 1249. There have been many changes over the years, but the quality, variety and great value of the goods on offer continues to improve. If it’s fresh food you are looking for we can offer a variety of quality produce, from succulent cuts of locally reared beef and pork to freshly baked pies and quality fresh fruit and vegetables. We also have daily deliveries of fresh fish direct from the east coast.

We cater for the young and not so young with the latest fashions in both clothing and footwear and for that special occasion we have a variety of fresh cut flowers. Then when you need to take a break from all that shopping we can offer you a well earned rest at one of our variety of cafes for a tea or coffee and maybe a fresh cream cake. So if you want to shop where Royal Approval has been given then shop on Barnsley Market - Still probably the best market in the North of England. Look out for some Real characters George the Sockman, Sailor Sid and many more. Barnsley Town Centre also offers free parking on Saturdays and Sundays in all Town Centre council run car parks, excluding on street parking where charges still apply on Saturdays. Time restrictions still apply in all council run car parks and on street parking bays on Saturdays. Barnsley Markets, Metropolitan Centre, May Day Green, Barnsley Tel: 01226 772239
