Serve up a succulent Christmas feast EVERYONE knows how stressful Christmas can be. The house full of relatives who don't get on, over-excited and tired children throwing tantrums and petulant teenagers wishing they were anywhere rather than with their family. The Christmas Day lunch is another potential recipe for disaster, with the worry for the cook of over done turkey and soggy sprouts. However, with a bit of planning the day can go smoothly and without hassle. It’s always a good idea to start preparing for Christmas Day lunch on Christmas Eve, by making some stock from the giblets, boiled up with some carrots, onion, celery and bayleaf, to use for the gravy. You can also prepare your vegetables, sprouts and parsnips, and your pigs in blankets (sausages wrapped in bacon) and assemble your trifle.

Later on in the day you can start to prepare the chestnut stuffing, using sausage meat as the main ingredient to keep the turkey moist. On Christmas Day itself, everything revolves around what time you want to sit down to eat and the size of your bird. But it is always a good idea to get the turkey and stuffing out of the fridge to allow them to get to room temperature so they will start cooking as soon as they go into the oven. You’ll need to put the pigs in blankets in later in the morning. While it is cooking, you can peel the potatoes and put them in cold water ready to parboil before roasting them, and make the bread sauce. You’ll also need to put the steamer on for the Christmas pudding, if you are having one, and make the brandy sauce.

Wear heels and bring out your inner goddess HIGH heels are one sure fire way to bring out your inner goddess this Christmas. Acting like portable pedestals, they draw the eye up, elongating the legs and giving the appearance of sleeker, more beautiful pins. To help you make the most of your party outfit, the people behind the leading ladies’ razor Gillette Venus, have created a High Heel High School Guide. Contributor Camilla Morton, author of How to Walk in High Heels, says: “Whether you choose an open toe or classic court, your heels say a lot about you. “Most of all you want to show that you are elegant, groomed, and a real lady.”

She advises that legs and feet are left bare instead of stockinged as this will help your shoes ‘stick’ to your feet. Celebrity stylist Hannah Sandler has this advice: “Hairfree legs and super-smooth skin will give you the confidence to carry off great heels,” she says. “Plus, pedicured toes are simply a must if you’re going for a opentoe. “Shoes have the power to make your legs look long and lean or short and stumpy, so the size, shape and height of heels and what you wear them with is very important,” she adds. “If you have larger legs, avoid T-straps or ankle straps, wide heels and round or square toes as

these styles can visually enlarge legs and widen the appearance of the foot. “Wedges can be worn with virtually every outfit, from skinny jeans, wide legs, seven-eighth trousers to maxi dresses. “Stilettos are the ultimate sexy shoes which never go out of style. Add extra sex appeal by choosing a heel with a low-cut front to reveal a peek of ‘toe cleavage’. “Super-high platforms are big news on the catwalks and good news for the ‘fuller figured’, as they provide balance for your shape and help even out your silKiller heels: Black twist-knot platform shoe from Matalan. houette.”

CATWALK choreographer Lee Lapthorne explains how to apply the supermodel technique to walk the walk with confidence. “When it comes to catwalking, every designer requires a different strut. The Gucci step is punchy with lots of energy and rhythm, in contrast to a Chanel stride, which is slower paced, more elegant and relaxed,” he said. For the girl in the street, the style is more Chanel than Gucci, a sexy, elongated step.

“Keep your legs close together and as straight as possible,” says Lee. “Imagine a straight line in front of you and walk to it. “Add a sexy vibe with a slight strut, crossing each step over the previous one.” He advises practising in private to perfect your high-heeled gait, walking around the house in heels to get used to the height, and using a full-length mirror to see how you look.

WHEN it comes to beds, George Crofts and David Taylor know just about all there is to know — they have been manufacturing and retailing them for many years and pride themselves on the quality and variety of their bed ranges and related products. Their aim is to offer customers the latest in bed technology and styles, and in their factory/showroom at 44 Bank Street, Mexborough, you will find an extensive range to suit all needs and budgets. Buying a bed is a very personal thing and they insist upon customers taking their time to choose. Their wealth of experience allows them to offer good advice on the various mattresses and bases to ensure you get the perfect combination. The collection includes the Maxi Store Ottoman bed, whose mattress can be raised effortlessly to reveal a large storage space beneath and the innovative three-in-one bed. This design features a base containing storage space plus a handy hideaway slatted base and mattress, which glides into the base and can easily be pulled out to form a single bed. This is also available in a single version with a spare base and mattress which can be used as an extra single or can form a double bed. In addition there are electrically operated bed lifters which raise the mattress vertically and also at the head and foot, which are beneficial to those in a caring role who have to do a lot of lifting. Edwardian Bedding also sells memory mattresses which were invented by NASA for astronauts. These mould to the body while you sleep and return slowly to their original shape during the day. The whole mattress is ‘slow return’ and as such can be turned, unlike combinations which feature the function on one side only. Cool-Max mattresses have been specially designed for those who prefer to feel cool during the night. They are covered in a fabric containing thousands of tiny perforations which, rather than retaining body moisture, which makes the mattress warm, allows it to evaporate and keeps you cool. Slow return mattresses are also available with Cool-Max fabric. And now the best of both worlds, Edwardian Bedding have designed and produced recovery and spring marriage, which gives a double luxury sensational sleep. You must come and try it to experience “Heaven on Earth’, and in addition to this it has the advantage of being a ‘no turn’ mattress. The company also sells a wide range of bedsteads and headboards including faux leather and suede, Victorian-style and contemporary metal, and a variety of wooden designs. And if you want to co-ordinate your soft furnishings, headboards can be covered in your own fabric. Edwardian Bedding goes that extra step to provide first class customer service which includes the option of taking away your old bed or mattress. The factory/showroom is just ten minutes’ drive away from Cortonwood shopping complex along the Dearne Valley Parkway.

Add festive foliage to your home THERE are so many ways to decorate your home for Christmas with delightful displays of festive foliage. Here are two easy-to-follow ideas to whet your appetite. For a lovely Christmas wreath in green and white, use a mixture of wintry blooms like hyacinth, freesia, longiflorum lily and star of Bethlehem with brunia and snowy spruce, offset with natural shells Warm red: Begonia with ivy. Picture: Flowers & and sparkling Christmas lights. Plants Association — www.flowers.org.uk. Light from a round candle in the centre will cast a glow off the pretty pearl beads. Crimson begonia are perfect for Christmas. You can weave them into a ready-made woven wooden wreath, available from florists and garden centres, for a gorgeous traditional red and green arrangement. Just take eight red mini begonia, and tape four cocktail sticks to the base of their pots, so that the sticks protrude like legs. Use the legs to slot the begonia pots into position on the wreath frame. Cover the remaining space with evergreen foliage by simply weaving individual branches into the frame. Finally, take lengths of ivy and wrap them around the Berry bright: A classic red poinsettia clad in wreath. cones, berries and foliage. Emblem of Christmas spirit COLOURFUL poinsettias bring an exotic edge to the cold season and even have a day dedicated to them December 12, the date of the death of Joel Poinsett, the US diplomat and plant lover who first bought the plant from Mexico to the new world. Here’s how to create the festive arrangement pictured above: ● Take a cone-shaped piece of moist florists' foam and pin moss all over, leaving a gap at the top. ● Pierce crab apples with cocktail sticks, and push into the foam. ● Add pieces of spruce and some berries. ● Glue sticks to pine cones and add to the design. ● Add your Poinsettia ‘star’ — cut the stem from a plant and seal the end by passing through a candle flame. Voila – your very own home-made Christmas tree! Poinsettias also come in white, cream, peach, pink and patterned varieties.

Crafty tips to help you make your own cards THE tradition of sending Christmas cards dates back to 1846, when the founder of the Victoria and Albert Museum, Henry Cole, commissioned artist John Horsley to do an illustration of a happy family. He had 1000 cards engraved and hand coloured, and sent half to his friends and sold the rest for a shilling apiece – quite a sum of money in those days for most families. The idea caught on fast and Christmas cards remain as popular as ever as the preferred Christmas festive greeting, beating off strong competition from newfangled formats like text and email, according to research by Royal Mail. Holly, ivy and robins and piglets were popular Christmas card designs with the Victorians but these days, anything goes, from traditional Nativity scenes to mild or bawdy humour. For a more individual greeting, it's very rewarding to make your own – and they’re certain to be deeply appreciated by the recipient. Here, handmade stationery designer Louise Cunningham shares her ideas on trends and inspirations. “It’s a good idea to begin by making a 'mood board', containing a collage of ideas and inspirations, cut out from cards and magazines, for example, with colours and images that have caught your eye. Keep your eyes open everywhere you go and look out for things from everyday living which inspire you. It might be wallpaper in a magazine

with a pattern that you like or a Christmas decoration. “Craft shops are a wonderful source for embellishments and attachments.” Louise has picked out three distinctive trends for this Christmas to help budding designers choose a theme. ‘Winter wonderland’ use a frosted palette of ice blues, white, cream and silver, with hints of dusky pink, teal or slate blue for contrast. For the design, choose from twinkle ribbons, diamante, beads, sequins, lace and feathers, with layered hearts, snowflake patterns and stylised lettering. ‘Burnished glow’ is a bold, metallic look, with gold, bronze, copper and amber tones dotted with hints of black and pale pink. For embellishment, try butterflies, ribbons, jewels and bows, with kaleidoscope patterning or bold, botanical imagery. The traditional look is always popular, with a palette of rich tones like berry red, plum and cranberry and burnt, earthy tones like orange, chocolate, cinnamon, fern green and olive, with hints of gold, cream and ivory. Use oversized bows, velvet ribbons, lace and beading to decorate. Louise, who lives in Barnsley and runs a wedding stationery business called Mimosa Designs, was previously a handmade Christmas card designer for Hallmark, creating ranges for major retailers like Asda, Tesco and Next.

Traditional: Rich tones like berry red, cinnamon and cranberry capture the spirit of the season.

Winter wonderland: Use crystals and jewels for simple, sparkling glamour.

Burnished glow: Gold, bronze and amber tones merge to make up the metallic trend.

IF it’s a new fitted kitchen or bedroom you require, then look no further than Design Interiors Barnsley. Situated on the Mitchells Enterprise Centre, Bradbury Balk Lane, Wombwell, directly behind Billingtons Steel Works, slightly off the beaten track but certainly worth checking out. Now in its sixth year, Design Interiors is a family business dedicated to service and quality. With a large well fitted showroom to view, most tastes and budgets can be catered for. With oak Shaker and modern gloss finishes still proving popular. Design Interiors can project manage your new kitchen from start to finish including any building work, plastering, tiling and flooring. A large percentage of their work is based on recommendation, emphasising their commitment to service and quality. Design Interiors is now entering its third year as agent for

German branded kitchens “Nolte”, and the product goes from strength to strength with the introduction of the “Matrix 150” system for 2009. This allows for easier planning and the trend for open living by integrating the kitchen and living area as one and creating one social area. Bedrooms are still proving popular for Design Interiors and, with the new factory now open, flexibility and quality are even better. As they manufacture the units themselves all

the furniture can be custom made for most requirements, including dormer bedrooms. For all the DIY buffs, supply only isn’t a problem, with all kitchen units being fully assembled and delivered free of charge. They can even do the planning and check survey to avoid any costly mistakes. Design Interiors is currently in the process of re-vamping the showroom to make way for some of the new designs for 2009 so a few ex-display items are up for grabs and there is still time to have your new kitchen and bedroom in time for Christmas. So give Design Interiors a call or visit the website: www.design interiors barnsley.co.uk

Give your Christmas the personal touch If you’re feeling crafty this Christmas, why not have a go at making some of your own decorations? It's a wonderful, fun way to get the children involved and to create a more personal touch. Here are some simple step-by-step guides to embellishing plain old baubles and making your own wreaths to fuel your imagination. Baubles

along the middle of the ribbon. Step Three: Apply dots of glue along the ribbon to decorate it, adding sequins and gems for extra embellishment. Make small dots of glue above and below the ribbon decoration for a more glittery bauble. Materials required: ■ Plain baubles ■ Selection of ribbons and braids ■ A glue gun and glitter sticks ■ Sequins ■ Small glittery gems

Step One: Cut a length of ribbon long enough to fit around the bauble adding a little extra to overlap the ends. Glue it around the bauble. Cut two lengths of braid and glue them along both edges of the ribbon on the bauble. Step Two: Work in small sections at a time so that the glue does not dry before the ribbon has been pressed onto it. Alternatively, glue one strip of braid

Above: Gluing the braid onto baubles and right, the finished product.

each varying in shape, fragrance, colour and texture. The main types currently available are the Norway Spruce, which is the original deepgreen Christmas tree, the Nordmann Fir, currently the most popular in Britain, the Blue Spruce and the Serbian Spruce, all pictured. A relative newcomer is the slim, silvergreen Fraser Fir, which is the most popular Christmas tree in the USA, now grown locally and available from Billingley. Billingley Christmas Trees was established in 2001 at Primrose Hill Farm as a means

of diversification during the foot-and-mouth crisis which affected the livestock industry. Since then the farm has made a name for itself as a quality producer, supplying trees to many householdnames, including supermarkets for their festive commercials and the BBC for last year’s Christmas episode of Dr Who. Its latest move was to open up an internet side to the business, The Christmas Tree Farm, allowing people across the country to order its trees online.
