Adding sparkle to shine ... CHRISTMAS is the one time of the year when ladies can throw the rule book out the window, adding as much sparkle as they desire to their outfits. Accessories for the festive season are all about the glitz and glamour with sequins, glitter and embellishing in abundance. These items are particularly good for trans-

forming plain party dresses from simple to standout. For example a little black dress can be teamed with a statement clutch bag and a set of glitzy earrings to achieve that all important Christmas sparkle. Festive bag choices are almost never ending with sophisticated designs in satin, velvet and

metallic fabrics featuring jewel and beaded detailing as well as fun, structured designs finished with bright glitter or flirty feathers. Striking shoes are another great way to add interest to your look. Options this season include skyscraper glitter platforms, shimmering slingbacks and chunky wedges with jewel and stud detailing.

Jumping for jumper joy this Christmas THERE was a time when being seen wearing a Christmas jumper was the height of embarrassment, but today the statement garments are considered both fun and fashionable for the festive period.

Men in particular have embraced the seasonal trend with an abundance of styles on offer across the high street. Designs include comedy Santa, snowman and reindeer motifs, similar to that of Mark

Darcy's famous jumper in Bridget Jones Diary. For those in search of a more sophisticated look there are numerous fair isle patterned knits, ideal for office parties and family gatherings.

While the comedy Christmas jumpers are guaranteed to lift spirits during the festive period their wears are limited to just a few weeks while more subtle designs and fair isle prints make great staples for the whole winter season.

Pamper your way into the Christmas party season ... WORK parties and festive gatherings will soon be in full swing, meaning it's high time for some preChristmas pampering. Many women feel they don't have time to spend on themselves at this time of year, but a quick trip to the hairdressers and/or beauty salon can make all the difference, preparing you for the party season ahead. The harsh winter weather can take its toll on both hair and skin so these are two main areas to invest in. At the hairdressers a quick trim and deep conditioning treatment will banish dry, split ends and deliver gorgeous glossy locks. For those wanting their hair styling for a night out, luscious waves are one of the hottest trends for the winter season. For long lengths, loose effortless waves or big bouncy curls are the way to go while for shorter lengths tousled locks make a glamorous

alternative to poker straight bobs. If you don't want to wear your hair down, sleek up dos remain strong for the festive season and include sophisticated ponytails, simple buns and soft braids. At the beauticians a facial is a top choice of treatment. The bitter weather drains our skin of moisture so a rich, hydrating facial is best for those wanting soft, smooth and glowing skin. If you're really in the mood for spoiling yourself you could also indulge in full body polish which will banish dull, dry surface cells from head to toe. For those planning on baring a little flesh in their chosen party wear a spray tan is a must. A simple airbrush treatment will ensure a natural, streak-free golden tan that will last for up to seven days. Many salons also offer top-up tans at discounted prices so you can fake it all the way through the party season

without breaking the bank. Other popular treatments during December include manicures and pedicures for perfectly polished nails plus tinting, waxing and/or threading treatments to tidy up eyebrows. It's also worth investing in your make-up for the festive season, whether you choose to book in with a professional or buy some new products to do your own party make-up at home. Smoky eyes are always on trend at this time of year but for the winter season the look has been reinvented with the use of colour. Instead of sticking to grey and silver shadows try blending different shades of purple, blue, green or bronze tones. Bold eyeliner is a key look for winter, particularly winged liner that flicks out at the corners. Eyebrows remain big so don't over pluck.

Pre-Christmas pamper: A facial with leave you with soft, smooth and glowing skin for the party season. When it comes to lips, striking scarlet and dark, vampy reds form two of the biggest looks which are sure to attract attention under the mistletoe.

The magic of Lapland: an exciting destination for all ages ... IF you’re looking to get away in the run up to Christmas why not pay Santa a visit in his winter wonderland? It's not just children who can experience the magic of Lapland – it’s an exciting place for adults to visit too. Contrary to popular belief, Santa doesn’t live in the North Pole, instead Lapland is home to Santa Claus and his helpers. A number of companies provide trips to Lapland around Christmas time and they are a great idea for

people who want to get away for the festive season. Whether you choose to go for a couple of nights or an entire week there are plenty of exciting activities to keep families thoroughly entertained. These include snow mobiling, husky dog rides, reindeer and toboggan rides and, of course, meeting Santa. At this time of year, Lapland is a truly magical place, having around five hours of what is known as ‘grey light’ between the hours of 10am and 3pm.

The rest of the day is as if it's nighttime, but because of the snow, light is reflected and it is possible to see quite well in the dark. The temperature in Lapland regularly falls to -15 degrees Celsius and sometimes below. The area known as Lapland is in Finland, in the far northern part of Scandinavia, which is situated in the Arctic Circle. Lapland also spreads over other countries including parts of Sweden and Norway.

Finding the perfect present for your pooch CHRISTMAS is a time to treat your family – and that includes your pets. In the run up to the big day super-

markets, high street shops and pet specialists stock up on perfect pet pressies, offering everything from edible Christmas cards to personalised collars and beds. Owners of dogs will be particularly spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing a gift for their pooch. Chew sticks, treats and toys make great stocking fillers while larger, more expensive gifts can be saved or under the tree. Plush beds, bling collars and posh food bowls are some of the options available but it's doggy clothing and accessories that are top of the Christmas list this year. For those wanting to enter into the festive spirit there are Santa hats and reindeer antler headbands and even full Rudolf outfits. Meanwhile for fashionable fidos there are fair isle print scarfs, chunky knit jumpers, cute socks and tweed coats.

The secret to the perfect roast turkey this Christmas THE secret to the perfect roast turkey is to keep the breast meat moist while the darker leg meat, which takes longer to cook, finishes cooking. For best results cover the breast with streaky bacon rashers, baste well from time to time and protect it with foil if it shows signs of becoming too brown. A 3.6-5kg bird will serve ten to fifteen people; 5-6.8kg 15-20 people and 15-20kg 20-30 people. Ingredients 1 oven-ready turkey 25g butter 2 medium onions, skinned and finely chopped 225g fresh wholemeal bread crumbs 60ml chopped fresh parsley finely grated rind of 2 lemons salt and pepper 1 egg, beaten streaky bacon rashers Method To make the stuffing, melt the butter in a large saucepan, add the onions, cover and cook gently for about ten minutes, until really soft, stirring occasionally. Remove from the heat and add the bread crumbs, parsley and lemon rind. Season and stir in the egg. Wash the inside of the bird with boiling water and stuff at the neck end before folding the neck skin over. Make the turkey plump and as even in shape as possible, then truss it

‘Serve the roast turkey with the traditional accompaniment of thin gravy, bread sauce, small sausage and bacon rolls, roast seasonal vegetables and Brussels sprouts’

with the wings folded under the body and the legs tied together. Weigh the turkey and calculate the cooking time allowing 20 minutes per 450g plus 20 minutes. Place the turkey in a roasting tin, then sprinkle with salt and pepper. Cover the turkey breast with streaky bacon rashers to prevent it from becoming dry. Roast at 180 degrees Celsius (375 degrees Fahrenheit) Gas Mark 4, basting occasionally. Leave the turkey to rest for ten minutes, then carve thin slices of the breast meat by cutting down between the thigh and breast. Serve the roast turkey with the traditional accompaniment of thin gravy, bread sauce, small sausage and bacon rolls, roast seasonal vegetables and Brussels sprouts. Why not finish off your festive feast with an alternative dessert? Christmas ice cream is a delicious option which includes all the best things that go into a traditional Christmas pudding – dried fruit, rum, port and spices. The ice cream mixture of eggs, sugar and cream is very luxurious and needs to be beaten twice while freezing to prevent ice crystals from spoiling the smoothness. Ingredients (serves four to six) 10g mixed no-soak dried fruit 60ml light or dark rum 30ml port

grated juice and rind of an orange 450ml fresh single cream 3 egg yolks 100g caster sugar 150ml fresh whipping cream 5ml ground mixed spice Method Mix the dried fruit, rum, port and orange rind and juice together, then set aside to marinate overnight. Gently heat the single cream in a small saucepan to simmering point. Whisk the egg yolks and sugar together in a medium bowl until pale and thick. Gradually pour on the hot cream, stirring continuously. Strain the mixture into a medium heavy-based or double saucepan and cook over a gentle heat, stirring continuously, for 20 minutes. Do not allow to boil. When the mixture coats the back of a wooden spoon, stop cooking and allow to cool. Whip the cream, until stiff, then fold into the cold mixture with the dried fruit mixture and mixed spice. Pour into a shallow freezer container, then cover and freeze for about three hours until mushy. Turn into a chilled bowl and beat well. Return to the freezer container and freeze for a further two hours. Beat the mixture again, then turn into a 1.1 litre bombe mould, cover and freeze for a further two hours until firm. Transfer to the refrigerator to soften for 30 minutes before serving.

6,000 festive calories? And that’s just on Christmas Day

Temptation: Try to balance festive treats with healthy food options to avoid piling on the pounds at Christmas.

HRISTMAS can be a challenging time of the year for those watching their weight as temptation is on every corner. The average person in the UK will consume around 6,000 calories on Christmas day alone (versus the guideline daily amount of 2,000 calories for women and 2,500 calories for men). In addition to this, over the festive period, which seems to kick off earlier and earlier each year, the average person may consume an extra 500 calories per day, equating to a weight gain of around 5lb by the time January comes around if you’ve been partying since the end of November. The British Dietetic Association (BDA) is on hand to highlight some handy tips to ensure the only thing that gets really stuffed this Christmas is the turkey. I Plan ahead – If you are going to eat out, eat smaller meals beforehand and cut out any other treats. Open one box of chocolates at a time rather than having five on the go and put unopened boxes away out of sight. I Buffet table surfing – Don’t hover by the buffet table and if you do indulge, try and visit only once using a smaller dessert sized plate, avoiding the high saturated fat offerings like sausage rolls and quiche, in favour of fruit, skinless chicken and vegetable crudités. I Office politics – To avoid the office com-

munal chocolate/mince pies etc, take festive fruit like satsumas into work. I Supermarket sweep – When going to the supermarket, make a list and stick to it. Avoid those aisles of temptation. If you want some festive snacks, try plain popcorn, pretzels, and vegetable crudités with a yummy low fat dip. I Big bird – Turkey is a great source of protein and a low fat meat. Most of the fat that is present in a cooked turkey will be found in the skin. Why not take the skin off before you tuck in? I Perfect portions – About a third of your dinner plate should be vegetables, such as unbuttered Brussels sprouts, peas and carrots. Cook for the shortest length of time possible in the smallest amount of water necessary to keep all the nutrients in. Use the veg water for gravy and any leftover veg for a delicious soup. These make a great contribution to your five-a-day and they also help fill you up to stop the urge to snack between meals. I Healthy options – If you want to go that extra step, try dry roasting potatoes on a non-stick baking sheet or use an oil spray instead of smothering them in goose fat. You can also make your gravy using vegetable stock instead of meat juices, accompanied by a fruit-based stuffing with bread sauce made with low fat milk. I Bottoms down – Those who like to

indulge in a drink or two, tend to drink more over the Christmas period. Avoid sweet cocktails and creamy liqueurs. Try alternating your drink with a glass of water or other calorie free drinks and if you do enjoy a short with a mixer, stock up on low calorie mixers and unsweetened fruit juices and beware the home measures. I Pie-eyed – The average mince pie contains about 250 calories and that’s before it’s covered in cream or brandy butter. Remove the lid to cut calories. Christmas is also the time of year when most houses have boxes and boxes of chocolates and biscuits to hand. While we all like to enjoy the odd treat now and then, balance this with some healthy options, such as satsumas piled high in a bowl, dried fruit, figs and nuts. Sian Porter, consultant dietician and spokesperson for the BDA, said: “Christmas should be a time for festive fun and special food. You shouldn’t feel guilty about treats now and then, you just need to make sure that they are treats and not the whole sum of your food intake. Stock up on some healthy alternatives too for some balance. “This time of year, it is so easy to unwittingly consume a lot more calories than normal. Make plans to get yourself and the family active – dancing, shopping and post-meal walks all will help to burn off some calories.”

Draw up a Christmas list before hitting the shops WITH less than six shopping weeks left to go before Christmas, it's time to hit the high street. For some, trawling through busy shops in the run up to the festive period can be a daunting task but a little organisation can make all the difference. Before heading out draw up a list of items you think your loved ones would like so you’ve got some idea of what you’re looking for and where to find it. This approach should result in purchasing gifts that recipients will really appreciate, rather than snapping up last-minute panic buys or coming away empty handed. Females are pretty easy to buy for and they’re also extremely good at dropping hints so listen out for obvious clues in the run up to Christmas. Clothes, perfume and beauty products are always popular with ladies whether you are buying for your mum, sister, nan or friend. If you’re looking for a gift for your girlfriend or wife the budget may be a little higher and therefore luxurious lingerie, shoes, handbags and sparkling jewellery make top pressies.

For something a little different, why not treat her to some theatre tickets, or perhaps, a spa day experience, where she can recharge her batteries ready for the new year ahead. But if you really want to spoil her, planning a romantic weekend away is guaranteed to earn you brownie points, plus it’s a special gift you can share together. Men are generally seen as harder to buy for but there are still plenty of gift options choose from. Music vouchers, DVDs and video games rarely disappoint and will keep them entertained during the festive season and beyond. Stretching the budget a little further, gadgets are a great option for boyfriends and husbands. Top buys this year include tablet PCs, wireless head phones and speakers, smartphones, HD video cameras and anything by Apple. Men tend to indulge in shopping sprees less than ladies so clothes always make a good Christmas pressies whether it's a comedy Christmas knit, a designer shirt or a woolly hat, scarf and gloves set for playing in the snow. Thinking outside the box, gig tickets or football tickets are often a good way to a man's heart.
