BARNSLEY LASS GRACES THE STAGE AT LA THEATRE SCHOOL BY MIKE COTTON GRACE Kelly not only has the same name as a famous Hollywood star, but goes to the same top LA stage school her namesake attended. Grace, 21, sister to Katherine – who plays Coronation Street’s Becky McDonald – is back in her home town for the summer but will return to Los Angeles in September for her third year at the American Academy of Performing Arts.Only 25 of the 80 students who started the course made it to the final year. She’s not sure yet whether her famous name will be a help or a hindrance when it comes to looking for acting work. She said: “Some people might think it’s cheesy, but I think people might find it eye-catching if they’re looking through a load of CVs. I really love my name, so I didn’t want to change it. “I was thinking about changing it to Grace O’Kelly, because I’m half Irish.” Other graduates from the academy include Robert Redford, Paul Rudd and Anne Hathaway. This week Grace will take on the role of stage manager in Disney’s High School Musical. It’s on at the Lamproom until Saturday, Performing art: Grace, front centre, pictured with cast members Jack Midgley, Luke Shepherd, Catherine Thompson, Laura Whitaker and Kelly Wragg. MS SUFFERER JUMPS AT THE CHANCE TO HELP A MULTIPLE sclerosis sufferer is to do a parachute jump with the Red Devils. Jennifer Lacey, 27, of Wakefield Road, Barnsley, wanted to raise money for the Barnsley MS Society. She said the degenerative condition, which attacks the central nervous system, stopped her from being able to do more physical activities. “There’s so many people doing long walks and cycling but I can’t do that so I thought I would jump out of a plane,” she said. “It should be easy for me as it won’t have any physical impact.” Jennifer was diagnosed with MS five years ago. She said it was most commonly diagnosed in women in their early-20s and got pro-

FOOTY FANS MAKE BOOBS OF THEMSELVES KAYLEY WORSLEY A GROUP of Barnsley FC fans will drive across Europe this month in a car decorated with boobs. The friends, who met through being season ticket holders at Oakwell, call themselves the Barnsley Original Old Boys – BOOBs. They have bought a Landrover Discovery for

£250 to take part in a rally through France, Switzerland and Italy. Their theme fits in with the cause, as they are taking part to raise money for the breast cancer unit at Barnsley hospital. Ken Richards, 62, of Church Hill, Royston, said they were looking forward to the challenge. “Each year we visit the war graves. But this year we wanted to do something different as

well as to raise money for the hospital.” The two-day rally starts in Normandy on July 22 and takes its inspiration from the 1969 crime caper The Italian Job. Part of the rally requires photographic evidence from clues based on the film. So teams must visit a number of key film settings including St Bernard Pass and Turin before moving on to Monte Carlo and the finishing post at Nice. Ken said: “The organisers have stressed that this rally is not a race but an opportunity for people with a sense of adventure, humour, and possibly a tool kit, to crunch the miles.”

Continental rally: Ready to travel to Italy are Barnsley Original Old Boys, Peter Needham, John Ennis, Alan White, Tony Crossland, Dave Girdlestone and Ken Richards.

Nurses promoted to help cut junior doctors’ hours NURSES at Barnsley hospital have been given more senior roles to help the trust meet European rules on junior doctors’ working hours. Seven nurses have trained to become advanced nurse practitioners so they can support the

judge the success of the scheme. “All trusts are having to think creatively about the way in which the multidisciplinary team can best reorganise and adapt,” she said. “We are currently looking at the criteria by which we will judge this

GEMMA’S HAPPIER AFTER OP BY KATE PICKLES A WOMAN from Barnsley has undergone breast reduction surgery after she was regularly groped on nights out. Gemma Westmoreland went down 14 cup sizes from a J to a C to stop the unwanted attention. She lost one-and-a-half stone from her chest and halved her dress size following the operation in May. “I was getting unwanted attention from both sexes,” she said. “People thought that because they were so big they could grab them. I would be out in town and people thought they had free rein to grope me. “It didn’t matter what town I was in. I would be walking down the street and people would shout jeers of ‘they can’t be real’. ” The 26-year-old decided to have the operation as the extra weight she was carrying hurt her back. She had to wear two bras for support and was told the Heavy load: Gemma befproblems would get worse as she got older. She went to Barnsley hospital but said she was left feeling humiliated by a nurse. “She said I should have gone to Sheffield and that the surgeon wasn’t competent enough if he had left me looking like this. It was in earshot of everyone there so I was really upset. I said it was an unfair comment.” Gemma, of The Avenue, Royston, had the dressings changed by a friend who was a nurse and returned to the Hallamshire. BRUNT AND PALS ARE BACK ON TOP BY DOUG O’KANE KATHERINE Brunt and her England colleagues put themselves back at the top of the women’s cricket world last week with victory in a four-way series against their three main rivals. The Dodworth girl, who turned 26 last Saturday, took the first opposition wicket in each of the group stage wins over New Zealand, Australia and India. England then defeated Twenty20 World Champions Australia again in the series final at the Rose Bowl in Southampton. England were the dominant force in women’s cricket in 2009 after they won the World Cup in both 20-overs and 50-overs formats. Their crown has slipped slightly in recent years but Brunt says this winning this series – although it does not count towards world rankings – is a massive boast. “To win all four matches is an awesome result for us,” said the 25-year-old. “Ever since we got knocked out of

A terrific innings: England ladies’ star Katherine Brunt. the Twenty20 World Cup last year we have been looking to prove that we are the best in the world. “On a personal level, I am delighted with my own performance. I am an opening bowler so there is a lot of pressure on me to take early wickets and keep the score down against batters who want to make an explosive start. “I have not played much cricket recently due to injury and I struggled to find my rhythm. But with each game my performance got better and I am really happy with the figures I recorded.” Brunt’s perfect Monday was completed by the news that the Loughborough University Women’s team she coaches won their British Championships final at Lord’s. She will be looking for more success in her preferred format of 50-over One Day Internationals over the next week. England took on New Zealand in Derby last

night and will stay at the same venue for their match against India before travelling to Lord’s, the home of cricket, to face Australia. The top two teams will face each other in a final at Wormsley. The Twenty20 series began well for Brunt as she produced a brute of a delivery to dismiss New Zealand captain Aimee Watkins in the fifth ball of the match at Chelmsford. Brunt finished with figures of 12 for one off three overs as the Kiwis were skittled for 83 before England reached their target with eight wickets and 41 balls to spare. At Bristol the women’s team played Australia in front of a large crowd ahead of the men’s teams disappointing defeat against Sri Lanka on the same ground. The Dodworth woman bowled out Shelley Nitschke who beat her to the Women’s Cricketer of the Year Award last year. She finished with 15 for one off three overs as Australia were all out for 114 chasing 137. That victory meant they qualified for the final and they won their final group match against India at Taunton on Sunday. Brunt once again took the first wicket as India could only muster 88 for eight chasing 135. In the final on Monday, England reached 132 for nine then kept Australia down to 116 for eight as Brunt conceded 17 off three overs.
