Tommy Taylor trophy sought RETIRED George Speed is trying to find out what happened to the Tommy Taylor Cup which was twice won by his late brother – the Monk Bretton butcher Dennis Speed. The football trophy belonged to Raley School where Tommy was educated. It was first presented following his death in the Munich air disaster, 1958. George said: “When he died in that plane crash they started the Tommy Taylor Cup. It was presented to the player of the year.” As well as Dennis, the trophy went to Trevor Phillips, who went on to play for Rotherham and Chester, and Geoff English who played for Arsenal, said George, 58, of Rowland Road, Gawber. He said: “It was about 18 inches high. It was engraved with Tommy Taylor’s name. They put the names of who won it around the bottom.” George added that Mr Bostwick was the teacher and football manager and Kes author, Barry Hines, had been the gym teacher at Raley.

convert a house into a children’s home after attempts to renew the lease on current property fails

Ray Woodhams, of Barnsley Council’s social care department, has applied to turn the house on Spring Lane into a children’s home including the conversion of a double garage into an additional bedroom, utility room and two offices. The council already operates a children’s home elsewhere in the borough using a house which is leased from a third party, but will not say where it is. The lease on that house is due to expire and it has not been possible to renew or extend the lease, despite attempts to do so. The application states this meant the council had to look elsewhere to provide a home for the five young people who live there. It hopes to relocate the youngsters,

A report adds: “The current home is registered with Ofsted for the provision of up to five long-term placements for young people aged between 12 and 17. “The home is inspected regularly by Ofsted which has recognised it as outstanding – the highest quality grading that it is possible to achieve.” It said the home had good local connections and there have been no complaints from neighbours at the current location.

STORE DONATES GAZEBO AFTER VANDALISM A CHURCH gazebo was destroyed by vandals the night before its summer fair. St Edward’s Church members at Kingstone set up the large gazebo ready for the fair the next day. They arrived in the morning to find it had been pulled down and all the poles bent beyond repair. “It was quite a shock,” said Fred Thompson.

“It was probably someone coming home from the pub, or some sort of gang.” Another church member went to B&Q to buy a new one, and the manager there decided to donate it. “I think it should have been about £80,” said Fred. “It was very generous, especially in these times of austerity. “We’ve got it for the future now and we will put it to good use.”

APPRENTICE Joshua Dale has been praised by his employers after winning a Barnsley College excellence award. He is studying electrical maintenance and is on a placement with John Laing Services on the Building Schools for the Future scheme. He won the award for the work he has done as maintenance assistant at Darton College. Shona Dunsmore, of John Laing, said: “We have no doubt that Joshua will have a very exciting future with us.”

AN ENERGETIC trio of ladies are hoping to finish in ‘pole position’ at a national dancing competition. Vikki Lunn, 25, of Darton, Donna Pearson, 33, of Bolton-upon-Dearne and Helen Gillick, 25, of Little Houghton, are through to the finals of a pole dancing contest in Manchester on Saturday. They all take part in the pole fitness classes at Rainbow Alternative Fitness Studio at the Maple estate, Stocks Lane. Instructor Kirsty Griffiths said: “We’ve got a girl in each of the three different categories, so we’re hoping for a clean sweep.” She said dance is growing in popularity as a form of exercise. She also does

breakdancing classes. Helen said she had been doing pole dancing for about two years and was really enjoying it. She said: “It’s just fitness really, but it’s really good fun, it keeps you fit, you see all your friends and it’s a really good laugh.” Vicky said: “We’ve entered the UK Amateur Pole Performer competition, in Manchester. It’s a chance to show what amateur pole dancers can do. “I’ve entered the performer level category, so I’ll have to do lots of spins, with costume, and just a general performance.” Helen will perform in the advanced category, which is more about ‘tricks’.

In a spin: Pole dancer Helen Gillick.

LATEST FIGURES REVEAL ILLSLEY HAD SECOND HIGHEST EXPENSES IN the year before his conviction for expenses fraud shamed Eric Illsley had the second highest MPs’ expenses claim, new figures show. His allowances between May last year and February when he stepped down as an MP were £151,245.75. That included almost £39,000 in a winding up payment. He said the inclusion of that made his total appear higher than others. He told the Chronicle it was used to settle office bills and meet staff

redundancy payments. “I did not get any of that money. It is an allowance for members who are stepping down to pay off outstanding contracts. It was all for contractual payments. The winding up allowance is capped and Mr Illsley said that influenced his decision to not step down until two days before his court appearance. “If I had stepped down earlier I would have had to give my staff payments in lieu of notice. There was not

enough money in that winding up allowance to do it. He said when former MPs, including Michael Clapham and Jeff Ennis, stood down they received a similar allowance, although it was recorded differently at the time. Annual claims by other Barnsley MPs were: Angela Smith, £133,737.78; Michael Dugher, £117,278.53; John Healey, £132,463.79; Dan Jarvis, £530.10. Without the winding up payment Mr Illsley’s claim was £112,555.15.

DON’T LET YOUR CAR RUIN YOUR HOLIDAY SUMMER sun usually heralds the start of longdistance trips to holiday destinations for many motorists. This means cars that have been used for short hops are suddenly thrust onto motorways and put through their paces. However, if a car is not properly prepared, things can go wrong. Hot weather can put extra strain on the engine

and cooling system of any vehicle, and can lead to overheating, both inside and outside the engine compartment. The Retail Motor Industry Federation warns drivers that after months of winter driving, when trips in the car are often short, long summer journeys can be hard for a car, especially if a vehicle has not been properly looked after.

It’s also worth remembering that driving at high speeds for long periods can lead to radiator and water hose problems. New air and oil filters and a coolant system check will help prevent this. The electrical system, especially the battery, must also be able to take the brunt of the fan system at full blast on its coolest setting, so get it checked. Motorists will want to keep things cool inside the car too, but the in-car cooling system may have been unused for several months. However, in the summer it is likely to see a great

is fully-charged with refrigerant and that any changes are done in line with the car manufacturer’s instructions. If you have not had the cooling system ‘flushed’ the cooling tubes may be

clogged with rust or other substances. The related hoses and belts may need to be checked as well. Although the checklist appears long and detailed it can easily be taken care of by a mechanic at a reputable

summer servicing TYRES Tyres can become neglected during the winter, and may need to be checked as the warmer weather approaches. The legal requirement for tread depth is at least 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the breadth of the tread and around the circumference. Before you set off on a journey make sure you have the recommended pressure in your tyres including the spare.

WINDSCREENS Windscreens should be kept as clean as possible. Empty washer bottles, fly stains, low-level sunlight, and dust can all combine to impair vision for the motorist. Tips for a clean windscreen include: ? Check front and rear blades for wear. ? Blades should be cleaned regularly to remove ground-in dirt and insects etc. ? Streaky screens can be caused by worn blades that must be replaced ? Check washer bottle levels. Add screen wash and dilute according to instructions. Always keep

spare fluid in the boot. Ensure the washer spray holes are clear of blockages ? Insects and grit can be easily removed with a sponge and warm water. For more stubborn dirt, use a screen clean paste to tackle the job effectively.

ON THE ROAD Many people do more motorway driving in the summer than at any other time. By following a few guidelines, those who are not use to motorway driving should be able to travel in safety: ? Get a good night’s sleep before a journey. ? Avoid long journeys between midnight and 6am when your alertness is likely to be at a minimum. A heavy meal

before driving is not advisable, as it may induce drowsiness. ? A break every two hours is recommended, but if you feel sleepy, stop in a safe place such as a service station. Take a nap or drink some strong coffee. ? Remember traffic on motorways usually travels faster than on other roads. You have less time to react, so use your mirrors continuously, and look further ahead. ? Heavy summer traffic can delay your journey, so make sure passengers have drinks and snacks to hand. Limit conversations, as taking your eyes off the Call an expert: Book your car in for a summer service to road for a few seconds can ensure it’s prepared for your holiday. (S) be dangerous. SHAUN STEELS WIN SHAUN Dimelow of the Barnsley Harriers crawled under cargo nets, scaled monkey bars and ran through ponds as he won the inaugural Sheffield Man of Steel race. The 10k event was held in Graves Park and is part of a growing national trend of races littered with ‘extreme obstacles’ designed to test competitors to the limit. Dimelow, who also had to carry sacks of sand up steep inclines, beat several hundred others to the title. He took the lead early on and finished three seconds clear. Dimelow won 30 races last year and has already finished first 14 times in 2011. But he says this was the most enjoyable win of his career. “I didn’t know what to expect before the race but it was brilliant,” he said. “There was a guy called Tom Johnson who is the South Yorkshire champion and a better runner than me but I was better than him on the obstacles and managed to beat him overall.”
