NEW BOSS FOR MEDIA CENTRE

3

Ron to bite bullet as shop closes A SCOOTER shop in Barnsley has started selling air rifles. Ron Daley Scooters on Doncaster Road has gained a licence from the police. The firm applied after Guns International, which also used to be on Doncaster Road, closed last year when the owners retired. It was the only gun shop in Barnsley. Scott Oxley, who works at Ron Daley Scooters, said there were now two halves to the business.

A NEW manager has been appointed at the Digital Media Centre. Gareth Scargill, 32, spent ten years working in the leisure industry before taking on the role. He said he is looking forward to transferring his skills into a new sector and increasing the profile of the centre on County Way. He said: “It’s a fantastic building but the people of Barnsley don’t know what it is or what it’s about. “We need more people to know about it and what we can do.” The £10.5m centre provides business space which has been designed to help creative, media and digital businesses grow. It has 72 offices and about 22,000-sq ft of letting space. At present is is about 60 per cent full of tenants including Barnsley College, BBC Radio Sheffield and events management company NJM Promotions. Gareth, a Barnsley Football Club fan, lives on Huddersfield Road with wife Emma, 36, and three-yearold son Jake. Out of the office he plays seven-a-side football and enjoys golf and travelling.

Scott said: “Ron is into his shooting, we all are really, and we were left asking where to get pellets and guns from? There is a big movement of people with air rifles in Barnsley.” “Now we have got half of the shop dedicated to guns and the other to scooters it has been very busy,” said Scott. “A lot of people were devastated when Guns International closed — the nearest ones to here were Mexborough and Doncaster. ”

Castle to ‘reveal’ all on TV WENTWORTH Castle will make a return to television when it features on another BBC show. It was made famous nationally when it appeared on the BBC series Restoration in 2003. But on May 31 it will be featured in an episode of BBC 2 programme The Country House Revealed, alongside nearby Wentworth Woodhouse. The programme unravels the story of the Wentworth family rivalry in the 18th century, which fuelled the development of both estates. It will be shown at 9pm.

STUDENT IN RUNNING FOR APPRENTICE BY KATE PICKLES A BARNSLEY College student is hoping to

make the final cut in this year’s Junior Apprentice. Jonathan Carr, 17, bat-

tled through thousands of applicants to be interviewed for the television show featuring Lord Alan Sugar. The A-level student, who is studying archaeology, classical civilisation and business studies, had 30 seconds to impress judges

‘I only applied as a bit of a joke with one of my friends but she chickened out’ at the interview in Birmingham. “I only applied as a bit of

a joke with one of my friends but she chickened out. I didn’t expect anything to come of it but I got an email saying I’d made it through,” said Jonathan, of Knollbeck Lane, Brampton. “I got 30 seconds saying why I thought I should go through. I can’t really remember what I said, it was all a bit of a blur. I remember other people saying they had businesses already which I couldn’t believe.” Jonathan, who is planning to study either archaeology or accountancy after college, said he had enjoyed auditioning. “It was a good experience and an achievement to get that far.”

ASHLEY SETS GOAL TO MAKE PARALYMPICS TO SCORE for England is great, but to net the winner against old rivals Scotland with a stunning volley is even more remarkable as Ashley Wakefield found out. The 19-year-old from Worsbrough Bridge was playing for the England cerebral palsy development squad in an international tournament in Denmark. He set up the first goal and then netted the winner against Scotland to give his side the bronze medal in the third/fourth place play-off. “The tournament was a really good experience and I would love to go to more,” he said. “I did not even know there were any cerebral palsy teams this time last year so it has been a big change but a good one. “It’s the best thing that

has ever happened to me.” Wakefield has always been a keen footballer and was on a coaching course when he was put in touch with Paul Bird who manages the cerebal palsy team for the North East and Yorkshire. Ashley’s good performances for the regional side earned him selection for the England development team and he hopes to make the step up to the senior squad as soon as possible. “I just need to keep playing well for my region and for the development squad and hopefully it will happen.” The senior team is due to play in the Cerebral Palsy

World Cup in Holland this July but Wakefield thinks that will come too early for him. Instead the former Barnsley Academy pupil hopes to make the team that goes to the Paralympics in London next year. “I will keep working towards that goal and if it happens then great but if it doesn't I have plenty more things to aim for as I am only young. “There will be more World Cups and there are regular home nations championships. “A door has been opened to me that I didn’t know existed so I am really happy.”
